At this point, I'm not even sure if I'm qualified to review it anymore, because I feel like the game has been reviewing my life instead.
During the time I've spent playing this game, I could've learned a few languages, started a career, put my life somewhat in order and maybe done something actually useful with my time.
But what did I do?
I spent hundreds of hours grinding the same spot, used the money I made to enhance gear, watched it blow up and stared at my screen thinking, “Seriously? That one had to fail too?”
And what did I do after that?
Went right back to the same spot.
At some point, my account actually surpassed me. My character's gear is worth more than my real life financial situation.
When I first started, I told myself, “I'll play for 2-3 hours and quit if I don't like it.
I liked it.
Way too much.
The first few months were great. You make a new class, explore the world, work on your gear, kill bosses. Then eventually you realize what the game is actually about:
Grind → make silver → enhance gear → gear explodes → go back to the grind .
After a while, you're not even grinding anymore. You're working a shift.
“I'll grind for 2 hours today.”
3 hours later: “Just one more hour.”
5 hours later: “Might as well, I'm already here.”
7 hours later: “I'll go to bed early tomorrow.”
The next day:
“Wait, how's that new class?”
And you're back in the game.
The enhancement system is basically a psychological experiment.
You enhance an item and it goes through. You’re happy.
You try another one and it fails.
It's fine.
You try again. Fails again.
Okay.
One more.
Fails again.
At that point you're not even questioning the item anymore. You're questioning your life choices.
Why did I do this?
What else could I have spent that money on?
Why am I still in the exact same place in this game?
Then five minutes later:
“Let's try one more.”
But I have to give it credit. The combat system is still really good. That's probably one of Black Desert's biggest strengths. You actually feel like you're controlling your character instead of just clicking on things. After playing for a while, combat in other games starts to feel slow.
And the graphics still look great. Sometimes I just stop and look at the scenery and think, “Damn, this game actually looks good.”
30 seconds later I'm back at the same grind spot.
Life skills are another trap entirely.
“I'll stop grinding and just do some relaxing fishing.”
Then you start researching fishing gear.
You need silver for gear. You need to grind for silver.
And 10 minutes later you're grinding again.
I genuinely don't remember how many times I've quit this game.
Every single time:
“I'm actually done this time.”
One month later:
I wonder what they added in the new update.
Log in.
Look around for a bit.
“Let me just check this one thing.”
Three hours gone.
Does Black Desert have bad sides?
Absolutely.
Quite a few of them.
Sometimes the game makes even the simplest things way more complicated than they need to be. Trying to figure out some cooking or alchemy stuff feels like you need a damn degree. Then you realize you need a worker, a specific node, a specific item, and somehow you're watching a 20-minute guide just to figure out how to cook a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ meal.
But somehow, you keep coming back.
Because somehow, it always pulls you back in
After 10,000 hours, I'm still playing the game. So either they're doing something right,
or I have a serious problem.
Honestly, the second option seems more likely.
If you're thinking about starting this game, I only have one piece of advice:
If you have too much free time, get enough sleep, and still have a social life, go ahead and start playing.

Someone from customer support finally agreed that I can also send the last ACOIN transaction to prove my identity, which I did. A couple of days later my ticket got closed for "not providing enough evidence".
Also tried to completely remove the game from my account and buy it again for 1$. It didn't work.

FIRST: INACTIVE ACCOUNTS
According to Pearl Abyss' current Terms of Service, accounts with no connection records for 3 years may be deactivated.
If that account is deactivated AND has no history of paid transactions such as Pearl purchases or Wallet top-ups, the account information may later be deleted.
So no, 3 years offline does NOT automatically mean your account is gone.
But yes, this rule exists, and returning players should know about it.

WHAT KIND OF MMO IS BDO?
Black Desert is not really a traditional WoW-style MMO.
Do not expect the whole endgame to revolve around Tank / Healer / DPS / Dungeon / Raid.
There is group content, but a huge part of BDO is about your own progression:
Grinding monster zones.
Making silver.
Improving gear.
Life skills.
Workers.
Trading.
Fishing.
Horses.
Gathering.
Crafting.
Exploration.
PvP if you want it.
A lot of PvE progression can mean grinding the same areas for a long time.
If you like putting on music or a video and grinding toward a goal for hours, BDO can be very satisfying.
If that sounds horrible, you should know that before starting.

Temporary buffs are useful.
Artisan's Memory affects enhancement recovery.
Cron Stones are tied directly to enhancement.
That is where I personally stop liking the system.
The game creates a huge time/resource grind while the shop stands next to it selling ways to make parts of that journey easier.
That combination is exactly what bothers me.

You CAN progress very far.
You CAN reach high-end content.
And you might genuinely have thousands of hours of fun doing it.
I am saying this because I have spent money on games like this myself and later realized that a lot of it was completely unnecessary.
If this review helps even one new player avoid that mistake, it was worth writing.
Just know what kind of game you are getting into before you start.

According to Pearl Abyss' current Terms of Service, accounts with no connection records for 3 years may be deactivated.
If that account is deactivated AND has no history of paid transactions such as Pearl purchases or Wallet top-ups, the account information may later be deleted.
So no, 3 years offline does NOT automatically mean your account is gone.
But yes, this rule exists, and returning players should know about it.

Black Desert is not really a traditional WoW-style MMO.
Do not expect the whole endgame to revolve around Tank / Healer / DPS / Dungeon / Raid.
There is group content, but a huge part of BDO is about your own progression:
Grinding monster zones.
Making silver.
Improving gear.
Life skills.
Workers.
Trading.
Fishing.
Horses.
Gathering.
Crafting.
Exploration.
PvP if you want it.
A lot of PvE progression can mean grinding the same areas for a long time.
If you like putting on music or a video and grinding toward a goal for hours, BDO can be very satisfying.
If that sounds horrible, you should know that before starting.

What you should expect as a first-time player:
* this game's two main focuses are PVP combat and lifeskilling. there's a great deal of depth in both of those areas, with a range of ways to engage in both, but PVE endgame content is mostly limited to solo mob farming and free-for-all world events. this is a game you can play alongside your friends, but you (probably) will never heal your friends through a boss fight.
* the combat system feels awkward and bad in early game. some classes feel worse than others. as you come to understand your character's combo flows and unlock more skills, this improves dramatically, so give it a chance. leveling through early and midgame goes reasonably quickly, and as you near endgame and unlock and learn the majority of your character's combo moves, combat becomes smooth, snappy, and beautiful. at endgame when you're comfortable with your move set the combat in this game is exceptionally good and fun, built for lightning fast, highly mobile PVP play. you will never again be satisfied to wait out 0.70 glassy-eyed seconds for your global auto-attack cooldown to refresh.
* this game is a grindfest, and will remain a grindfest until the day you stop playing. if you categorically hate grinding (which is understandable) it may not be for you, but there's a very wide variety of stuff to do at endgame and a lot of people find content that they enjoy for its own sake. killing 10,000 gnolls is *a lot* less miserable in this game than it is in WoW. you might even have fun doing it. if not, there's a hundred other things to try out. it's worth exploring what it has to offer, just understand that the grind is what you get.
* the character customizer is exceptionally detailed for a game of its era. you can control fine elements of facial geometry and truly make a one-of-a-kind face. lots of fun if you enjoy that kind of thing.
* as with any mature SK-MMO, the interface and the number of systems to interact with are a cluttered nightmare. pick one or two at a time to learn about, ignore the rest til you get to them, you won't miss anything crucial.
* BDO has a lot to offer players who enjoy more casual, semi-afk incremental management games like farmville. you will also need to engage in the combat content in order to unlock enough of the world to really dig into these systems, but if you ultimately don't want that to be your main content in this game there are other options to keep you entertained. besides PVP and money-making activities (mob grinding, gathering, cooking and fishing being the most popular and profitable), there's a lot of world and game to explore just for the fun of seeing it. for more casual, curious players, there's a lot of fun to be had simply exploring the world, playing knowledge collect-a-thon, building and managing a worker empire, sailing the ocean in your own ship, or decorating your apartment(s).
* the fashion endgame is somewhat disappointing. there are vanity slots where you can equip costumes, however they are also unfortunately stat-bearing, which means some fashion choices are mechanically un-optimal. there is no transmog system, and outfit slots mostly consist of boots, gloves, hat, and body clothes, with no ability to select different pants or a cool belt. the coolest outfits, naturally, are cash shop items (though a decent portion of those can be bought for in-game currency at steep prices on the market), but even for those you mostly get what you're offered, there's not much customization besides gear dyeing.
* this game is not pay-to-win, but it is pay-for-quality-of-life. you can play it free-to-play, you'll progress slower but mostly because you'll have to do more running back and forth talking to NPCs and managing your inventory. the exp boosts you get from paid buffs are insignificant if you use combat exp scrolls and elixirs and play on the season cah so you will be able to engage in all the content without paying even if it takes a bit longer to get there. the biggest handicap you face as a free player is that you don't get to enjoy the buffs to carry weight and bank storage capacity that paid players get. this is annoying if you get used to the paid buffs, but it's not crippling.
* this game runs surprisingly well on lower-end hardware. the game code optimization is notably better than for similar games of its era, so if you have an old dated gaming rig that struggles with GW2 or retail WOW, BDO may still run relatively smoothly for you.
Things that might surprise you about this game (if you've played western MMOs):
* endgame is loosely defined in this game, as there is no maximum level. level progress slows exponentially, and getting beyond about level 61 takes a concerted effort, likely involving multiple hours of intensive mob grinding. nearly all level-gated content unlocks come in the 56-60 range, which is reasonably easy to reach through quests, no grinding required.
* until fairly recently, there was no fast-travel system in this game. the magnus well system was added in the last few years, offering warps between map regions, but it is not accessible to you until you reach endgame and complete a lengthy and somewhat annoying quest chain. there are only about 12 magnus wells in the game, so even once they're unlocked, expect to be doing a lot of running. for the most part, your primary mode of transport is your horse. learning how to protect, manage, train, and effectively handle your horse is *not* optional in this game, so don't ignore it hoping you'll get something better. the time you put into riding a horse is an investment, as horse experience levels and skill levels make a substantial difference in how fast it moves and how well it handles.
* boats are also a thing. sailing *is* optional, as there aren't many things you must sail to accomplish, and almost all of them can be done as a passenger on a guildmate's boat. if you want to get into sailing for fun or bartering for profit, wait until you can get a real boat with cannons and sailors, entry level boats handle so poorly that sailing them will make you never want to touch a boat again.
Miscellaneous tips:
* if you don't know what to do with your contribution points, use them to rent apartments in cities and allocate them to storage capacity, to increase your town storage in those cities. this will compensate for one of the significant handicaps of being free-to-play.
* use the market warehouse as your other bank, even for stuff you don't plan to sell, it's by far the largest and most useful storage inventory in the game for miscellaneous junk. note that the market warehouse is unique in that it tracks capacity by item weight rather than by inventory slots. if you fill up your market warehouse quickly, look at what's in there and pull out anything with high weight (such as wearable gear). heavy items can be stuck in town storage somewhere.
* once you reach endgame and have figured out something you're willing to do to generate cash, "real money" starts at about 100 million silver, or more like 1 billion for established endgame players. anything less than 1 million silver is pennies you'd step over in the street, don't worry about spending it.
* swimming sucks in BDO, avoid it if you can. swimming extremely sucks when you're over-encumbered. do not fall off a dock into the water while carrying trade goods, or anything else that pushes your encumbrance load above about %150 of carry capacity. you'll be ready to delete your character and start over by the time you get out of the water.

* this game's two main focuses are PVP combat and lifeskilling. there's a great deal of depth in both of those areas, with a range of ways to engage in both, but PVE endgame content is mostly limited to solo mob farming and free-for-all world events. this is a game you can play alongside your friends, but you (probably) will never heal your friends through a boss fight.
* the combat system feels awkward and bad in early game. some classes feel worse than others. as you come to understand your character's combo flows and unlock more skills, this improves dramatically, so give it a chance. leveling through early and midgame goes reasonably quickly, and as you near endgame and unlock and learn the majority of your character's combo moves, combat becomes smooth, snappy, and beautiful. at endgame when you're comfortable with your move set the combat in this game is exceptionally good and fun, built for lightning fast, highly mobile PVP play. you will never again be satisfied to wait out 0.70 glassy-eyed seconds for your global auto-attack cooldown to refresh.
* this game is a grindfest, and will remain a grindfest until the day you stop playing. if you categorically hate grinding (which is understandable) it may not be for you, but there's a very wide variety of stuff to do at endgame and a lot of people find content that they enjoy for its own sake. killing 10,000 gnolls is *a lot* less miserable in this game than it is in WoW. you might even have fun doing it. if not, there's a hundred other things to try out. it's worth exploring what it has to offer, just understand that the grind is what you get.
* the character customizer is exceptionally detailed for a game of its era. you can control fine elements of facial geometry and truly make a one-of-a-kind face. lots of fun if you enjoy that kind of thing.
* as with any mature SK-MMO, the interface and the number of systems to interact with are a cluttered nightmare. pick one or two at a time to learn about, ignore the rest til you get to them, you won't miss anything crucial.
* BDO has a lot to offer players who enjoy more casual, semi-afk incremental management games like farmville. you will also need to engage in the combat content in order to unlock enough of the world to really dig into these systems, but if you ultimately don't want that to be your main content in this game there are other options to keep you entertained. besides PVP and money-making activities (mob grinding, gathering, cooking and fishing being the most popular and profitable), there's a lot of world and game to explore just for the fun of seeing it. for more casual, curious players, there's a lot of fun to be had simply exploring the world, playing knowledge collect-a-thon, building and managing a worker empire, sailing the ocean in your own ship, or decorating your apartment(s).
* the fashion endgame is somewhat disappointing. there are vanity slots where you can equip costumes, however they are also unfortunately stat-bearing, which means some fashion choices are mechanically un-optimal. there is no transmog system, and outfit slots mostly consist of boots, gloves, hat, and body clothes, with no ability to select different pants or a cool belt. the coolest outfits, naturally, are cash shop items (though a decent portion of those can be bought for in-game currency at steep prices on the market), but even for those you mostly get what you're offered, there's not much customization besides gear dyeing.
* this game is not pay-to-win, but it is pay-for-quality-of-life. you can play it free-to-play, you'll progress slower but mostly because you'll have to do more running back and forth talking to NPCs and managing your inventory. the exp boosts you get from paid buffs are insignificant if you use combat exp scrolls and elixirs and play on the season cah so you will be able to engage in all the content without paying even if it takes a bit longer to get there. the biggest handicap you face as a free player is that you don't get to enjoy the buffs to carry weight and bank storage capacity that paid players get. this is annoying if you get used to the paid buffs, but it's not crippling.

The tutorials are mere walls of text and use words that make no sense to someone who doesn't have basic knowledge of the lore to begin with - where is the logic in that? Also, I never found a way to re-read tutorials after the fact? Maybe there is a way, but the thousands of different menu options made the search 10 times as tedious and I eventually gave up.
In short: Way too overwhelming. Way too confusing. Way too unintuitive.
Not even worth the 99 Cents I paid for it during Sale, tbh. Would refund if I had given up on this game before the 2 trial hours were over. Unfortunately, I decided to give it a few hours more to maybe become understandable.

What I do not like is what I will be focusing on this game, and although I would still recommend this game I would caution new players of some key facts.
Leveling: The leveling experience from lvl1-56 Is just a lot of running around and speed running dialog options and really has no meaning and if they deleted the low and mid leveling part of the game you wouldn't be missing anything at all honestly.
In game Market: Want to save silver to pay for premium because you don't or can't pay the overpriced fee? Tough luck you will not see them in the market and if you do you will never get one I know I've tried for over a year going as high as a billion silver. The reason for this is whales and spenders buy cosmetics as they sell for far more than the 30day premium service, this is based on the utterly insane and hyper inflated real money prices going for $20-$50+ real Dollars to buy which should not be the case but it is this is why you will be forced to stop playing for a month or so or be a new player to get the returning gift of a specific period of time of premium, they used to give out actual premium packs but when they changed the previously mention gift it seems they got rid of a lot of that. And it is a primary reason I do not play long term the second I run out of the free gift I stop playing because why should I be forced to pay? After all you are supposed to be able to buy with in game currency but you can't.
Life skills vs Progression: Season is a lot worse at this however it is kind of the same across the bored, the reality is for season characters they grind up to level61-63 Get all rewards rinse and repeat until all alts are the same level and at no point do you care about life skills. Life skills can be fun but unless you are only playing non-season there is no reason because it takes up grinding time.
Gear progression: Season gives you decent starter bossing gear it's not bad, however the base game gear progression system is about the most pathetic obnoxious system with so many layers and so many different required items not to mention if you try to grind out end game gear good luck it is based on a percentage success rate system which get's to a point where you are spending so much for so little but you need that little bonus to atk power or def power just to get anything done late game. Sometimes you get lucky and get free gear which is useable at lvl1 to use which can be nice to get as it negates months of grinding to at times over a years worth of grinding Absolutely NO GAME should force you to grind for that long period!.
Characters balance: Yeah let's just say there is a meta and if you are not using it end game feels underwhelming and even a newly released character is either overpowered or underpowered I hate meta focused systems because it means I cannot play the class I want and end up being forced to play what will be good for yet more grinding!
Granted I stated I recommend the game, why is that? Because compared to all other MMO's out there this game has far more going for it than any others which can be good or bad. You want to go onto open seas and go fishing? Okay go for it, want to be a farmer or breed horses? Go for it, want to be a hunter or lumberjack? Yeah they got that too, want to be a tradesmen, make potions, cook, or be a blacksmith? Let's go. And they are in-depth.
Lastly I would say there are things I'd love changed or updated but overall I know what I am getting into, and unlike many other games that force sluggish gameplay to reach end game on a seasonal character this game has them all beat as progression is very rapid, the storyline might be great.....But I have no idea I just hold R and skip all dialog because it is not engaging enough for me to care about.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tminiscule advancements for insane cost. but people love it. i have a love/hate with it. the drop rates are non existent. but there is always a path to buy your way forward. tons of free stuff all the time. some of it insanely useful, a lot of it is not, and a lot is designed to get you ...almost to a cool item..if you only spend x amount to finish it.
lets be honest. its been around 10 years. the playability and replay-ability is there and the graphics are not dated. they look great especially on remastered. even modest current gpus can handle remastered. you can have fun without spending a fortune, you will just never be the meta and arena will probably never be on your to-do list. almost every item can be 'earned' in game and they do a great job of not breaking the game with crazy cash-only items. there is def a p2w aspect and cash shop does not try to hide that it will give you a huge ..insurmountable advantage over a f2p player, but f2p exists and patient people can really enjoy the long road of building a strong account. if you are a person who needs to be top dog immediately, well you better have saudi oil prince money to catch up. im not even exaggerating. oil money.
combat is player skill based. button mashers wont survive long in pvp. some pve content may be off limits to you as well if you dont learn your class and implement it effectively.
the game is szo huge at this point you can get brain freeze just thinking about what to do next. there is so much content that you can actually choose not to participate in some of it. but...bdo does a great job of integrating all the different aspects of game, meaning gains in one area will have a trickle effect into other areas. for expample, i dont use boats. i hate everything about the ocean and barter in bdo. i refuse to do it period end of story. and i do fine with income generation by doing other things. other people dont set foot on land. but by ignoring the ocean and islands, i miss out on some items that you cant buy. and those items may increase my ap/dp, offer a skill, provide access to other content, ect. specializing into one aspect of the game exists and people do well with it. some dont like combat but love fishing. they can build strong accounts by being afk with a fishing pole 24/7.
a new player will get new player gifts which will get you squared away rather quickly. the easy mode seasonal character process will allow you to participate in boss content very quickly, and the academy will teach even old dogs new tricks and give insanely valuable items in return for you learning the process. so even tho i gave this the p2w title, f2p can and do participate.
and if you read this and still install it, only one tip that means anything. dont waste crons. its the only meaningful item in the game and until you know what they are, how to use them and what to use them on, just save every one you get. i dont know this for a fact, but if i had access to pearl abyss cash transactions reports, i would bet they stay in business on cron sales and sexy costumes.
