This infinite replay value is due to the genius RNG, workshop content/mods and the way-ahead-of-its-time "Director" mechanic as well as Valve's attention to detail especially in the writing of the characters and the world you play in.
Competitors in recent years have attempted to replicate Left 4 Dead 2's formula and made some decent games but they still fall flat on their faces in comparison with Left 4 Dead 2 despite it's almost two decade old age.

Someone falls off a ledge.
Another person forgets to heal.
The Tank punches someone through a wall.
Now you're down a player.
Great teamwork.
The campaign design is also fantastic. Every level feels like a journey rather than just a collection of rooms, and you're constantly moving toward some kind of safe room while trying to survive whatever the Director decides to throw at you.
And that's one of the best parts of the game.
The game seems to know exactly when you're getting comfortable.
You haven't seen anything dangerous for a while.
Your health is good.
You have plenty of ammunition.
You start thinking:
“This is going pretty well.”
Then the Director decides that you're having too much fun.
A horde appears.
A Witch is nearby.
A Tank spawns.
The lights go out.
Someone screams.
Your entire team collapses.
You make it to the safe room with 12 HP and absolutely no supplies.
Perfect.
The AI Director keeps every game feeling slightly different, which is a huge reason L4D2 has remained so replayable.
You can play the same campaign multiple times and still have completely different experiences.
Maybe you get an easy run.
Maybe you get attacked by three special infected simultaneously.
Maybe your friend gets dragged into a hole and you have to rescue them.
Maybe someone accidentally triggers the alarm and turns the entire level into a zombie festival.
You never really know.
And then there's versus mode.
This is where friendships go to die.
Playing as the survivors is one thing.
Playing as the infected is something completely different.
You get to become the exact creatures that have been ruining everyone's day.
You hide around a corner.
You wait.
You see a survivor walk past.
You spawn.
You attack.
You get killed immediately.
You respawn.
You try again.
Eventually you manage to pull someone off a roof as a Smoker and feel like a tactical genius.
Then a shotgun deletes you.
Back to the respawn screen.

You remember the time your friend got launched off a bridge.
You remember someone accidentally shooting the Witch.
You remember hiding in a closet while a Tank destroyed everything outside.
