IMO the best part of the game is the supportive and wholesome community - it really brings out the best in people.

The game blew up, and insted of making it even better they just went to make a vampire survival rip-off AFTER the ganre lost popularity, then they made the EXACT SAME game but with some rogue-like features, sold seperatly at a full price, and the game that is/was popular gets one misson type, two overclocks and a battle pass about once per year, they gave us haz 5+ that are never worth running aside from the challange (it's unfair enemy stat slop), the only way to have fun after 200+hrs is mods. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tIf I were to be writing this review like two years ago, I would've recommended it. But right now it's in a rough state due to sheer neglect by the devs ever since they decided to focus on unnecessary spinoffs instead of polishing and improving their main title.
First of all, lack of updates and fixes. This game barely gets anything worthy these days because they were working on two other lackluster spinoffs that are literally just cashgrabs. This game got so many bugs (no pun intended) that haven't been fixed yet. They ♥♥♥♥♥♥ over the spawnrate so bad that literally some missions can go by smoothly and other times it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. There is no consistency whatsover.
Some mission types are so imbalanced like heavy extraction where they have normal horde spawns on top of the horde that spawns when you extract a resinite mass or normal extraction where there is literally a barrage of constant enemies coupled with the normal hordes which forces you to complete the mission as fast as possible to not waste resources. The new enemies that they added in the last few seasons are just plain bad, stingtails are cancerous to fight against (they used to be worse), pitjaws will bring you down to the deepest pits of hell. The devs were like: "Hmm, we have an enemy that spawns on the ceiling so that we force players to look up, how about we make an enemy that is hidden in the ground, ten times tankier, can relocate when it's damaged and not killed, and ten times more plentiful." Genius design.
The grinding in this game, while grindy by design, is executed in the worst way possible. You have a system called weapon overclocks which can either add upgrades to your weapons or make em slightly better, or change the function of the weapon. Neat system and all. However, the method of obtaining those overclocks is so abysmal and takes so damn long to obtain every single one, it is also dedicated by rng, so you don't even have the choice to obtain a specific overclock that you've heard from your friends like 'fat boy' or 'special powder'. It literally took me like 500 hours to obtain all weapon overclocks and the funny thing is, there are cosmetic overclocks which give you cosmetics and I havent even gotten close to obtaining them all
Balancing, top notch. See all those overclocks that you've gotten? Only about 20 percent of them are worth using because the others either are so boring because they just change a stat's number, really situational, or outright detrimental to run because of their downsides. There is also a perk system which havent changed in YEARS, resupply is mandatory, if you arent running last stand, you are literally throwing. The other active perks arent bad by design, but their cooldowns are so long that it's not even worth using. And most of the passive perks are meme worthy and you only run like 5 of them of the whole bunch.
Event enemies are ASS, lithophage corrupter is so damn tedious to fight, the core event enemies are garbage to fight against, it feels like they were made for another game entirely unless you are a scout or using a cheese strat with the gunner's zipline. And the seasonal events are plain boring, they just add like a bunch of cosmetics, a collectible that appears in the missions. They don't do anything unique with the events, they just make the grind a little bit more bearable.
Once you've seen everything in this game, in terms of missions, weapons and all the classes, there is little replayability and it gets monotonous really quickly, especially since there is no new content being added

I wanted to made more "objectively concise reviews" but since the game is so detailed and well-crafted i think it deserved better. So i decide to carefully go through each talking point one by one just to show my appreciation.
The game is a horde-shooter. It's high-production and it does everything exceptionally and it's more deep than it looks.
- Gameplay
Everything is fast, smooth and "snapy", its very satisfy to shoot things. Headshots feels great. Every class feels good to play, every mission have a fun objective.
You can also dig infinitly through missions.
- Difficulty
The game have selective difficulty, meaning its the best of both worlds. Casual players can chill and enjoy and masochists can go further and beyond. Higher difficults need to be unlocked and just pushing yourself is very self-rewarding. The game can be very hard if you choose so.
- Variety
Many different missions types.
Classes are very distinct and well thought-out. You can solo everything with any class but different strength's to certain missions, diferent upsides, diferent roles and toolsets makes swaping a fun choice, giving more player agency.
There are so many different enemies, each have a strenght and a better way to deal with.
Many weapons and many ways to build the same character, still being distinct from one another.
- Progression
It gives multiple mechanics progressive to the player. What i like more than a good progression system is one that end. I cant really remember how long it takes since i have fun just playing, but i remember been very satisfied by it. - Gameplay
Everything is fast, smooth and "snapy", its very satisfy to shoot things. Headshots feels great. Every class feels good to play, every mission have a fun objective.
You can also dig infinitly through missions.
- Difficulty
The game have selective difficulty, meaning its the best of both worlds. Casual players can chill and enjoy and masochists can go further and beyond. Higher difficults need to be unlocked and just pushing yourself is very self-rewarding. The game can be very hard if you choose so.
- Variety
Many different missions types.
Classes are very distinct and well thought-out. You can solo everything with any class but different strength's to certain missions, diferent upsides, diferent roles and toolsets makes swaping a fun choice, giving more player agency.
There are so many different enemies, each have a strenght and a better way to deal with.
Many weapons and many ways to build the same character, still being distinct from one another.

It gives multiple mechanics progressive to the player. What i like more than a good progression system is one that end. I cant really remember how long it takes since i have fun just playing, but i remember been very satisfied by it. They will add a couple $15 cosmetic packs and one new mission every year and that's about it. Basically your only end goal is to get the overclocks you want which isn't that hard and then all there is to do is meaninglessly level your characters or unlock cosmetics and grind the battlepass thing for more cosmetics. We haven't gotten new overclocks or weapons in a long time now.
I completely understand not every game needs MMO levels of depth and progression but it definitely feels like more could be done to fill the void in endgame and give us something other then cosmetics to work towards once your a high level.
Everything I have heard about Rouge Core with all this in mind just puts a bad taste in my mouth. So they took development away from DRG for years just to make another game that could've just been a alternate mission type in DRG? There are some minor nitpicks I'll mention below, but for the most part, every moment spent in the game will be enjoyable, with only rare cases of grind or frustration.
It's somewhat fun singleplayer, but really it's a multiplayer game. The community and cooperaction is about 70% of the game. That's not the fault of the game really so much as just "it's that type of game", much like Insurgency is just that type of game.
It does have a bit of that disease of "you're going to play every day... right? Right..?" in that there are weekly mission objectives (mostly for cores for overclocks) and limits to what you can achieve daily. Along with that, it has some time locked things. For example, I'd love to get the horse mask, but can't until a specific time of year, and I'm not even sure if I can then. This is good and bad. It gives a reason to keep playing aside from just the fun of playing, but why do you need that? And it's also just kind of FOMO.
The amount of actually useful weapon builds is low. For the most part people won't care if you use non-meta builds, but it's pretty obvious there's like, one, maybe two builds per class that are actually "canon" and the rest are just for the sake of variety. For example, no one is going to use flamer + face melter with wave cooker + gamma contamination. That's just not a viable build. Basically, there are good builds, and only a few of them, and then there are tons of useless things no one has a reason to use. Those builds are still really fun, but it is obvious the other overclocks and perks are just to pad it out.

The game wants you to have fun. The classes are clear roles you can fill and you just know how to be effective because that's what those classes are good at. The engineer is good at single target and taking out stragglers, the driller is insane at crowd control, the scout is fast and good at taking out high value targets, and the gunner can singlehandedly bring the team back to life or prevent them going down, as well as having high sustained single target damage and even some burst damage. You know what role of the team to fill because your tools work well for that thing. You don't need to even communicate. I mean, probably 70% of my games, the only communication we've had is "look at this" and "rock and stone" and "ready". That's how good the teamwork is, and it's all automatic. You don't need to be someone who is good at teamwork. It's so well designed, that someone who played nothing but sniper in battlefield and camped would be a good teammate in this game.Genius Design Choices
If you die, you still get some of the rewards you got through the mission, and can be revived in most cases. There is no punishing the player like in many games. You just about never think "that was unfair" even when 3 bulk detonators show up while in uplink. Plus, difficulty is optional, you can just choose a lower difficulty and it only marginally affects rewards. Each weapon feels good (apart from the minigun and smart gun which are garbage) and satisfying to use. The world immerses you with atmosphere and giving you a near-sandbox level of freedom to do random stuff. You could for example just dig straight through the wall instead of going through the normal passages, or draw the enemy back into a more open area or a chokepoint. You could stay together, or have people split for some objectives like finding resonance crystals, and the game doesn't punish you for it. Overall, the game's design is not "opinionated". There is no "correct" way to have fun. They give you the field and the toys to play with, they don't say "nuh uh you're not allowed to do that". It's a breath of fresh air from all the "hey you failed so I'm going to take all the things you like about the game and everything you find enjoyable about it and destroy it" that you see in e.g. games that add "roguelike" mechanics despite having no damn clue what makes them work.Criticisms
There is a ton of RNG and grind you have to do if you want specific (or all) weapon overclocks. It took me around 450 hours to unlock every weapon overclock I wanted to use, and that's working somewhat "efficiently" and minmaxing. In fact, the last one I considered "good" was one of the last 5 or so I got, so I really did have to unlock absolutely everything in order to get the ones I wanted. You play as a space dwarf sent into dangerous caves to collect valuable minerals while fighting endless waves of alien bugs. The caves are procedurally generated and fully destructible, so missions can feel different every time. The main downside is that missions can eventually start feeling repetitive, especially if you're playing for long sessions.
