Ever since the Jagex corporate takeover in 2023 SCUM play has been going to crap. They essentially forced Tomislav out in 2025 which took away the vision and goals of what SCUM was and was supposed to become. They then created the alot of the current mess of a game by changing an amazing though still buggy game to a game geared mainly towards lining their own pockets while doing the minimum they had to do to fix as little as possible.
Then at the end of 2025 Splash Damage acquired the game from Jagex and SCUM became the complete turd that it is now. They almost immediately went to pure profit mode and basically made the game look fun and flashy to make as much profit as quick as possible while burning the game down in the process. Runs slow, crashes alot...who cares we will make an expansion that looks cool and distracts everyone. Game bugs? Who cares, we can sell DLCs that make the players forget the crappy game play. Pretty low opinion of most of your player base that you profess to care so much about. The only player base you care about are the players who spend and even them not so much.
The ironic part is that buying DLCs was originally there to help with the cost of developing the game and fixing things and many were happy to buy them and enjoy those extras while the game itself got better! Now though its just to make money with no true development, no actual fixing of any issues and certainly not getting better!
SCUM will never be what it was and it will never be what it was created to be but MAYBE you can get back some of the Hordes who have left if you actually fix the game issues...though I doubt either of those things will happen.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Yet Another Love-Hate open world survival craft game but with a twist of The Running Man/Hunger Games/Battle Royale medley of flavors. And more. In that it's unexpectedly genius and dumb, and all various positions and emotions all rolled into one. Now, where to begin?
Background: prisoners are given an implant and parachuted onto an island for a TV show and must struggle to survive against the odds. That being other prisoners, zombies, mech robots, danger of nature/the elements, and your own body to stay maintained, to survive, make money, and accumulate "Fame" points to unlock better weapons and gear, and more. The island is full of nature and post-apocalyptic ruins, and is HUUUUUGE. You can hoof it for hours and barely scratch the surface. It's insane. You can go into every building, and everything is HIGHLY detailed. No "empty cube" rooms, but full of decor and detail, wreckage, destruction. There's small villas, towns, industrial outposts to cities.
Once on the ground, you need to find food, water, and build a shelter/base, and weapons, gear, and go around exploring/looting for whatever you can find to help make you more formidable. The game also "doesn't end". There is no "there can only be one", and it's not a "match" to play. It's very much a non-linear "HERE YA GO! *PLOP!*" and prisoners continually dumped on the island are left to their own devices. You know, like Australia. The game features a few "safe zones" which are small protected towns with vendors and various shops, including a bank, saloon, hospital, barber...and MORE.
The game is co-op/online with other players OR you can totally just play it in an offline/Singleplayer mode. The game world is already designed to be PVE, so you don't lose any features or anything by playing Singleplayer except that you're going through the experience solo.
Crafting...it sucks in this game, in that it's a bid unconventional and very difficult. This is probably where it would help to have friends who can help gather resources and build up structures quickly. Otherwise, it's going to be slow, challenging process. Zombies and AI-controlled prisoners, or worse foes, if you come across them, or they find you, is going to be rough. The prisoners especially, they'll be either well armed or poorly armed. ALSO, you might find them having partied up on their own. In my first attempt, I was ambushed and chased by two of them. They say stuff too, and I thought for a second maybe I didn't set it to singleplayer ("Sandbox" mode) and that a couple real players had joined, but no, it was the AI-controlled ones.
Trying to play the game solo, and find everything needed to craft and build anything good, is like ice-skating uphill. You'll see gameplay videos and ppl have all this stuff, from cars and intricate bases. YEAH, not going to happen unless you're playing with a competent team online, OR, using the "Creative"-mode style console commands to spawn in items or adjust character stats...sound familiar? Yes, this is similar to what goes in games like Skryim or Fallout NV/4 or even 7 Days to Die, that that people will customize the gameplay and make it a defacto "Creative mode" and make the whole game world their playground. And because of this, is why I think the game has been around and successful these past years, and also the huge appeal.
And doing all that is ok, if you're learning the game. Believe me, that's not enough to make you thrive. The game features an extremely intricate health system. You don't just need food/water to survive, you need nutrients, vitamins, depending on your diet, will change your character. Eat too many carbs, and not burn enough calories, you'll get fat. If you only drink water and eat protien and very physically active, you might slim down, especially if your calories go into the negative. The game's BCU system shows you in real-time all of your status, complete with pulse oximeter readings, readings on your organs, injuries, and plethora of conditions, there's so many. This in itself feels like a separate game lol, and it works very well. People will put their fattening characters through health regimens to maintain their health and physique. SCUM doubles as a "Health Maintenance Simulator". My character started to have too much fat, and had to change their diet and spend time burning calories by swimming (greater water graphics btw) and other exercises lol.
The game is brutal and has a steep learning curve. So much that I hated this game, and still don't like the progression system, the crafting, and how to naturally get stronger, better equipped. A crap-show. But I stuck with the game, because of the nice touches all around. I HIGHLY recommend new players not fret and use the console commands and other tweaks (there are "Server Settings" if in Singleplayer that adjust the gameplay, like multipliers for XP gain for example, im not going to list them all here but there's tons). This is a good way to experience the game. THEN, start to walk-back those adjustments as you learn the game, which is what I did and been having a great time.
They really seemed to think of everything. There are vehicles and boats to help with travel. From bicycles, rafts, to cars and motorboats. You can find ingame "radios" can tune into stations on, there's tons of outfits to customize your appearance, even plastic surgeons and barbers. You can get various weapons from kitchen knives to rocket launchers. All sorts of armor and peripherals, like night-visions, scopes, flashlights. It goes on. You an hunker down and claim an abandoned building as a base, or just build your own. And build multiple, pretty much anywhere (except in safezones). Loot is EVERYWHERE, so you can choose just try and survive on that if you find a settlement, kind of like in STALKER, just go out there and find what you need.
Graphics are top-notch, game runs very well. Animations are extremely detailed, and "realistic" (especially when the character needs to piss, poop, or vomit). There is optional nudity (similar to Conan Exiles, you can "endow" your character). Enemies get splattered and/or de-limbed. Blood decals splatter all around. You can further enjoy their demise by chopping up their body, and the pieces on the ground now from that you can further chop-up and harvest materials like meat to ea-....uhh...well, if you're into Cannibal Corpse, you'll appreciate the detail.
BUGS! The game is incredibly buggy and can be very frustrating at times. Usually exiting and re-entering the game seems to help, but it's annoying very much, like you die and it glithces and you lose all your gear permanently! There's also some really dumb gameplay choices, like if you break down cloth into rags, or find rags, you can't use them to bandage if bleeding out because they are "dirty rags" though the game doesn't tell you this. To "clean" them you have to wash them with soap and water. Yeah, well you have to explore and loot forever to find soap. Using alcohol to disinfect doesn't work (it lets me do it but it didn't work). Also, the you don't just "click to use", it's overly complicated, you have to fight with the poor UI to navigate the menus, find the issue, click on it, then click back into inventory, then click the button to "apply". You could be in the middle of life/death situation and waste time with the UI crap. It's like this throughout the game with many other abilities/functions as well. BRUTAL. It will probably make you want to hate the game at first and regret your decision to buy it.
Approach it like how players do 7 Days to Die, Conan Exiles, etc. just give yourself stuff, adjust settings, and play "creative-mode"-like and simply enjoy it. You're not cheating or anything, that's another way the game is allowed to be played. Yes, this is similar to what goes in games like Skryim or Fallout NV/4 or even 7 Days to Die, that that people will customize the gameplay and make it a defacto "Creative mode" and make the whole game world their playground. And because of this, is why I think the game has been around and successful these past years, and also the huge appeal.
And doing all that is ok, if you're learning the game. Believe me, that's not enough to make you thrive. The game features an extremely intricate health system. You don't just need food/water to survive, you need nutrients, vitamins, depending on your diet, will change your character. Eat too many carbs, and not burn enough calories, you'll get fat. If you only drink water and eat protien and very physically active, you might slim down, especially if your calories go into the negative. The game's BCU system shows you in real-time all of your status, complete with pulse oximeter readings, readings on your organs, injuries, and plethora of conditions, there's so many. This in itself feels like a separate game lol, and it works very well. People will put their fattening characters through health regimens to maintain their health and physique. SCUM doubles as a "Health Maintenance Simulator". My character started to have too much fat, and had to change their diet and spend time burning calories by swimming (greater water graphics btw) and other exercises lol.
The game is brutal and has a steep learning curve. So much that I hated this game, and still don't like the progression system, the crafting, and how to naturally get stronger, better equipped. A crap-show. But I stuck with the game, because of the nice touches all around. I HIGHLY recommend new players not fret and use the console commands and other tweaks (there are "Server Settings" if in Singleplayer that adjust the gameplay, like multipliers for XP gain for example, im not going to list them all here but there's tons). This is a good way to experience the game. THEN, start to walk-back those adjustments as you learn the game, which is what I did and been having a great time.
They really seemed to think of everything. There are vehicles and boats to help with travel. From bicycles, rafts, to cars and motorboats. You can find ingame "radios" can tune into stations on, there's tons of outfits to customize your appearance, even plastic surgeons and barbers. You can get various weapons from kitchen knives to rocket launchers. All sorts of armor and peripherals, like night-visions, scopes, flashlights. It goes on. You an hunker down and claim an abandoned building as a base, or just build your own. And build multiple, pretty much anywhere (except in safezones). Loot is EVERYWHERE, so you can choose just try and survive on that if you find a settlement, kind of like in STALKER, just go out there and find what you need.
Graphics are top-notch, game runs very well. Animations are extremely detailed, and "realistic" (especially when the character needs to piss, poop, or vomit). There is optional nudity (similar to Conan Exiles, you can "endow" your character). Enemies get splattered and/or de-limbed. Blood decals splatter all around. You can further enjoy their demise by chopping up their body, and the pieces on the ground now from that you can further chop-up and harvest materials like meat to ea-....uhh...well, if you're into Cannibal Corpse, you'll appreciate the detail.
BUGS! The game is incredibly buggy and can be very frustrating at times. Usually exiting and re-entering the game seems to help, but it's annoying very much, like you die and it glithces and you lose all your gear permanently! There's also some really dumb gameplay choices, like if you break down cloth into rags, or find rags, you can't use them to bandage if bleeding out because they are "dirty rags" though the game doesn't tell you this. To "clean" them you have to wash them with soap and water. Yeah, well you have to explore and loot forever to find soap. Using alcohol to disinfect doesn't work (it lets me do it but it didn't work). Also, the you don't just "click to use", it's overly complicated, you have to fight with the poor UI to navigate the menus, find the issue, click on it, then click back into inventory, then click the button to "apply". You could be in the middle of life/death situation and waste time with the UI crap. It's like this throughout the game with many other abilities/functions as well. BRUTAL. It will probably make you want to hate the game at first and regret your decision to buy it.
Approach it like how players do 7 Days to Die, Conan Exiles, etc. just give yourself stuff, adjust settings, and play "creative-mode"-like and simply enjoy it. You're not cheating or anything, that's another way the game is allowed to be played. It has longetivity up the wahzoo, on the level of other games that reach that level, though not much mods from what I've seen. The game is a huge playground - so enjoy it!\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

One random day you stop running to look in your inventory, you crumple to the ground dead. Some guy who has 10,000 rep points shoots you from a quarter mile away with a scoped rifle. So far you've only been able to make a makeshift gun that loads like a black powder rifle that takes like 20 seconds to reload one shot. Jump in chat and tell guy off for even being in a beginner server in the first place much less one shot killing you while you are doing nothing to him. Take a few days off. Start over on a different Beginner server. Find a better base spot high up in the mountains where no one wants to go. Spend over a month gathering supplies, guns, food, water, tool boxes, everything you ever need. Start to build your base in a tiny little valley in a mountain top where no one would ever go. log back in and every single item is gone. They don't even leave a rag or a needle. Wait a week. Start over on a new server. Hope you can find one where people are actual beginners, and not out to strip you of months of work while you're logged out. Spends a week regathering supplies. Also, it took 10 years for us to have the possibility of making pasta and rice without a recipe book, like, come on, its just water and rice/pasta... Anyway, the game is fun, especially on PVE servers, the community is fun and friendly. But in about the game itself, it still feels a bit like an early access title, it need a lot of polish on the performance side as well as added details on gameplay, like a HAMMER AND A SIMPLE CLOATHING DRYER OR HANGER OR SOMETHING SO I DONT NEED TO BE INSIDE OF A BONFIRE TO DRY MY CLOTHES!!!! Seriously, devs, if you guys read this, its just a new tool to add and a blueprint for a container that you can put clothes in and it will dry faster, im pretty sure im not the only one that thinks that way, but im maybe crazy.
Jokes aside (but not really, seriously...), the game is fun, i love the complexity of the metabolism system, its the only game i found with this level of detail on the body of the character. The gunplay feels nice, but the melee system needs a rework, it feels clunky sometimes.
Anyway, its a game that makes me forget to go outside, so its a 8/10 for me, need a hammer and a clothing hanger/dryer to make it a 9, and the ability to exercise like doing pushups and stuff to make it a 10.

I've had some of the best times on this game. Not prefect by ANY means but a far cry from what it was lol. I would love to see the addition of tamable animals in the Into the wild updates, mainly horses. As we all know the official servers Absolutely blow chunks at getting a vehicle that's not horded by one guy/group. ## The Good ##
What kept me playing was this huge payoff for the constant grind. This game is anything but casual. Enemies were very difficult to deal with at first. There were sicknesses to combat. Or just making sure you don't starve to death is something to figure out at first.
But if you do find that nice loot, you do see your money increase, you do build your first base, what a nice feeling!
If I hadn't found such a great PvE server, I would've quit way earlier.
## The Ugly ##
But the shortcomings are just ridiculous, sadly.
Frequent Crashes & Bugs:
I stopped counting how many times my game crashed in a "Fatal Error". If this happens in a fight or mid-flight, well, thanks for playing, try again. Updates introduce new bugs. Most of all, the devs just continue to fail at preventing these errors that just destroy gameplay.
Terrible In-Game Optimization:
The optimization is perhaps the worst I've ever encountered in any game. You can see my hardware specs. It's no gaming setup. Still, I can run every other game comfortably. But even on the lowest settings, I kept getting freezes for seconds. Mostly when aiming a bow. Consider this: an enemy is sprinting at you. You need to defend yourself, or else you're toast. You start aiming, and your game freezes for multiple seconds. How on Earth can this pass QA?
This is also the only game I've ever played that doesn't run on an HDD. Sure, long loading screens are common with HDDs. But it just froze so frequently that I had to switch to an SSD. Shows how incompetent the devs are.
Worst Update Process:
This is - again - the only game where installing some 2GB patch takes longer than downloading the whole 85GB. The devs just blame Steam for their update process. Strange, never saw another game on Steam taking over 1.5 hours to install a 2GB patch while maxing out my disk the whole time...
Ridiculous Spawns of Enemies:
Puppets spawned right in front of me. Like 2m.
The "hordes" mechanic is just terrible. If a puppet screams, there is a chance a whole, seemingly never-ending, mob spawns along with it. These aren't puppets that were in the surrounding area. They just spawn out of nowhere.
Sometimes towns are completely abandoned. Other times, even the so-called safe zones (at outposts) are overrun with puppets.
Janky UX at Best:
How can you implement multiple ammo types but not provide a way of selecting them? The only way I got it to work was by dropping all other ammo, so only the one I wanted was left in my inventory. Again, how can you release a feature in this state?
There are countless other examples where I sifted through many forum entries trying to find answers. Just because a) the game doesn't explain sh*t and b) UX is just bad, aka not intuitive.
Miscellaneous:
There are other things that support my idea that QA is just terrible. E.g., some text just wasn't translated, or there is no text at all in languages other than English. Come on, i18n is such a common requirement, how can you not use standard tools and screw this up as well?
To me, it feels like the developers just fail to take any responsibility for their failures. If I were working there, I would've left that company years ago because I just couldn't justify taking players' money and delivering this buggy, underbaked crap, honestly.
Considering the current price and the fact that this is sold as non-early-access leaves me without words.

I've spent a lot of time playing SCUM, and when it works, it's one of the best survival games available. The map is huge, the survival mechanics are deep, and there's a real sense of progression as you build a base, gather gear, and fight both the environment and other players.
The problem is that the game is still plagued by bugs, even after the 1.0 release. Players can randomly become invisible, making PvP feel unfair. Vehicles sometimes glitch, AI behaves unpredictably, and desync can cause frustrating deaths. There are also occasional server performance issues that make gameplay inconsistent, especially on busy official servers.
Despite these problems, SCUM has incredible potential. The developers continue to release updates and fix issues, but new patches often introduce new bugs. It can be frustrating because the core gameplay is genuinely excellent.

"Puppets" (zombies) randomly teleport around and kill you from it cause you cannot hit your arrow shots on something that isnt there. The crafting is, eh. I do like the depth.
