The game has fleet management (with independent commands you can issue to your Officers), skill progression tree, crafting, and many other functions. It does not have the ability to build a completely custom looking ship, but you can obtain a ship, and then customize many components inside it.
As of right now: mining seems worthless. salvaging seems to be far more profitable, but I also haven't dug into crafting much and haven't gotten very far. It could also be RNG blessed me with an area with 5 salvageable ships right out of the gates. salvage, sell, repeat.
Recommendations to the Dev:
Portraits: Add Females and Custom
Ships: Visual Customizability (allow the player to spend money to change the cosmetic appearance of their ships. Maybe a few different designs per ship size along with some paint/color options)
Balance: Make mining better (or nerf salvaging).
Bug Fixes/QoL: If ships can be collected/found, dropped, sold, make this more accessible to place ships in the world or at a station. Station inventory should be its own thing, you should be able to craft straight from both your personal and station inventory simultaneously. Make drone hangars and officer bays have the function to directly purchase/recruit to the desired ship. Great game, The "AI SLoP" isn't bad at all and it feels like anyone complaining about that, lost their gf to a vibrator or something.

This Dev is amazing. The game has received numerous updates within an incredibly short period of time. The updates aren't small bugfixes or minor cosmetic changes, he has implemented complementary systems and features that flesh out the gameplay in meaningful ways. Every day I log in, it's like Starlathe has gotten better and better.
Mining is much better. Scavenging feels more balanced. This has the potential to be the best 2D space sim game in the history of mankind. Buy a ticket and take a ride!\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Everyone angry about the 'AI slop' are the same people taking selfies with AI filters on their smartphones, they need to keep that complaint to reddit and let these single-person devs use the tools available until they earn the money to hire actual artists, sound designers, etc to change out the assets. If you're against AI usage; you're in for a world of pain, every industry uses it(medical, music, engineering, science, big tech, etc); and on every scale. That genie is out, it's not going away. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThis game is straight crack. Every path is fully viable. You can be an explorer and make money and level up and it feels super satisfying to chart out the galaxy. It also helps to have scanners and you can jump around the map like crazy. You can start combat and while it feels impossible at first, you can manage your power and start doing missions right away and be successful if you know what you are doing. You can mine and get crazy amounts of ore and refine what you make. You can automate a fleet of ships to just go around doing all of your work for you. You can scavenge derilicts for loot and even other ships which you can tow with a tow cable. You can build stations and full on armadas. I can't even believe this game works. Everything is simulated all the time. I have fleet ships that pop up and say hey this ship found something and it shows you a little window with what's going on around that ship. I can't believe how much is already in this game.
I will say, when I first played this it was unclear of how to really go about it. The starter ship has absolute trash modules on it when you get it. You are expected to replace and upgrade those modules very quickly. If you do, many things become way more viable almost immediately after. Overall a very fun game.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I hope that the productions can be like in X4: Foundation. and that the AI factions get smarter with their moves, but these things take time. There is also a lot of stuff and information inside of the UI. Maybe a bit cluttered right now; it can probably change later. And yes, here is AI used, but in a heavily controlled way (sounds, designs). The ships don't look bad at all; factions ship have all their own way. Symmetry is there; it's not slop like "just hey, give me a ship." It's carefully chosen and correct. The sound may be a bit exhausting over time. Maybe in a later stage they will be replaced or changed by a graphics designer. Same with sounds. But well, right now I have an update to explore each day.

The game advertises that "nothing is faked or spawned from thin air," but asteroids respawn on short timers in identical spots, and destroyed ship wreckage acts as a permanent, cooldown-based salvage point.
Infinite, location-bound resource respawns undermine the immersion and mechanics of a living, simulated economy. Having something like large/dense but finite asteroids and degrading wreckages, would make resource gathering feel far more meaningful and force players (and AI factions) to explore further out / go to war, for more resources.

Dev is very active and responds to suggestions and issues within the game. a lot had already changed in the game and it just keeps getting better. it does start slow until you unlock a few new ships and start a new game with those ships instead of the original drone you begin with. now i can start new game with legendary ships that are very underequipped to start and fly like a brick but buying an upgraded engine and gyro for turning throw on a couple mining drills and they are beasts rather quickly.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

It's not finished but the content there so far is great. The dev responds quickly whether you have issues or ideas. If you liked endless sky but wanted something that plays like an actual game this is for you, if you played thr SPACE RPG series on mobile this game is that but with much more depth.
