I don't think a video game has ever made me feel the way I felt in that moment. Getting the Weathered Mask in Hollow Knight and honestly beating Silksong's 100% Steel Soul mode was the closest I've ever felt to that raw emotion, the euphoria of accomplishment, of having persevered despite the immense challenge.
I still have to experience the content that I missed like Crystal Hearts, B-Sides, and C-Sides plus the post game stuff. I have a feeling those will make me pull my hair out and yet; I am eager, to push forward.

The game is difficult, but not punishing (unlike Silksong). It really feels like failure is a part of the learning process, and the game even encourages you to view your deaths as a testament of your perseverance despite the challenges. There is an assist mode if you hate constantly dying in the same room with no progress in sight, and if you wish to simply see the story then go on ahead, but you miss out on the game’s themes hitting all the harder because of said frustrations of failing yet still wanting to see it through in spite of it. The ending to the main story may end up feeling hollow should you just breeze through everything.
The art direction is phenomenal, the game nails the mood and overall atmosphere of each chapter visually and music wise.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tCeleste is one of the best platformers ever made, hands down. The game asks a lot of the player in terms of precise platforming and timing, but it is ALWAYS rooting for you. Celeste wants you to win, and it's part of why it feels so good to play. The game "cheats" in favor of the player in a variety of ways - if you're a pixel off of a jump, the game gives you the landing anyway. Enemies universally have slightly smaller hitboxes than their graphics appear. There's other ways it fudges things slightly in your favor, but when you put it all together, you get a game that is still extremely hard, but every time you die, you know you deserved to take that death, because any time a situation is remotely questionable, the game is built to favor the player. It's an exquisite example of how to make a game extremely hard, but also have that difficulty consistently feel fair. I have thousands and thousands of deaths in this game and I think I can count on one hand how many times I've felt at all 'robbed.'

In that regard, Celeste hits you like a sack of bricks or lack thereof. You're introduced to Assist Mode with a completely inoffensive message before the first couple of easy stages lull you into a false sense of security. Then it gets harder. And you die. Again and again, your death count per stage entering the triple digits, your clear times crawling up into the hour mark. But Celeste doesn't judge. There's no popup asking if you want some help after dying a dozen times to the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ obstacle. If you want to Assist Mode your way past an obstacle, you have to do it yourself. There's no ranking or subjective evaluation of your end-of-level stats - I still remember the horrendously out-of-tune victory fanfare that Sonic Unleashed would play whenever you were ♥♥♥♥ enough at a stage, or the hell yeah moment of Super Meat Boy showing you a replay of all your attempts at a stage once you've cleared it. Celeste just shows you the numbers and move on. Why isn't it judging me? Do I suck? Am I washed? Judge me, damnit!
And it goes on and on. The game is frustrating, each level feels a little bit too long, each obstacle demands just a bit too much reaction time, each new mechanic feels slightly too harsh, and each checkpoint is slightly too far away. The art is beautiful, the story is surprisingly touching despite how unlikable Madeline initially is, and the controls are as slick as they should be - my only complaint there is not having toggle grab as default or as a separate button, my index finger was suffering for the first few chapters. Yet as the game goes on, the feeling of dread sinks in further and further. My gamer honour struggles under the temptation to turn on Assist Mode just this once, but I know I won't ever feel satisfied if I do - I know I can beat this.
But then, Reflections. Madeline reaches her rock bottom and so do I. But once we get back on track, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ this is awesome. As the final summit push begins I'm feeling it. It's still too hard. It's not too floaty, it's not too heavy. You accelerate to your max speed very quickly, while still easily being able to pull off short adjustments and movements. Good midair control, tons of leniency, and insanely polished tech make it so that every death feels like your fault, with almost zero exceptions. This game is an absolute masterpiece when it comes to pure game design. It is the GOAT, and I'm not sure it will ever be surpassed.

Chapter 3 seems impossible to complete until you go back to it after climbing the summit. The story also leaves you feeling fulfilled. Very well made rooms. Dying as many times as you do isn't so bad. The main story chapters are much easier than B sides and C sides which are beyond me.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Great music and wonderful pixel art, and a terrific modding scene for tons of extra content for all levels of skill. It tells a good story in a great way, and it feels really emotionally expressive to explore the ways the game wants you to feel through the level design. I can't recommend it enough and there's countless hours worth of gameplay(if your willing to grind) OR there is also hundreds of amazing mods of all difficulties and challenges. This game is meant to be played however is the most enjoyable for you. There are assist options if the levels get too hard, and deathless challenges if the games not hard enough. On top of that the story of Madeline throughout Celeste mountain is beautiful and can symbolize basically any problem while also dealing with your own personal struggles. The community is so friendly and the creators are so caring(they even added a free "dlc" map with entirely new mechanics and movements and its one of the best levels in the game). OH AND THE MUSIC. DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE MUSIC. I feel lucky that I live in a world where this game can bless my ears with such sound. Just one thing: as a player who prefers the keyboard, I’d strongly recommend using a keyboard that supports simultaneous key presses, because for some tricky moves it really does make life easier ._., as it saves you from wasting time practising sequential combinations.
The game is also relatively forgiving — the level is split into numerous rooms with a respawn point after death.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tCeleste is probably one of my top games that I've played. The characters and lore are fascinating, and make me wonder about the meanings and themes of the overall story. For gameplay, it's certainly a challenge, but most of it isn't that bad. There are tricky sections, of course, but what game doesn't? I haven't encountered any bugs so far in my time playing, except what MIGHT have been a teensy bit of lag near the end though it could've also been a trick of the eyes.
I would say I definitely recommend it if you're into these types of games, but everyone has their own opinions, and it's absolutely fine if this games just not your type!
