I always disliked sokoban games, so when I heard Jonathan Blow's next game was a sokoban I was initially disappointed as The Witness is one of my favorite games and I was looking forward to what Blow and his team would make next.
I'm happy to say that my fears were unfounded and this game has given me newfound respect for the sokoban genre, after the demo I even went back to play other Sokoban like Maxwell's puzzling demon, Ligo and Void Stranger amongst others and enjoyed them a lot more.

The main idea of Order of the Sinking Star is: "What if we take 4 unrelated games and combine them together, what interesting new interactions are found in the intersections between these games."
Sokoban games are a natural way to do this because they are grid based and the base mechanics are similar enough that they are easy and natural to combine in this way. Four sokoban games were selected and licensed, these appear (revised) in the game so you can play the originals to get an idea of whether or not you enjoy their mechanics.

The production values of Order of the Sinking Star are incredible and really show where all The Witness money went for the last decade. The game is no-nonsense and doesn't include any hints, trusting the player to figure things out themselves. So there is no Atreus here telling Kratos "Hey you should try placing the mirror in this position!".
I like the puzzle difficulty, so far it's hard enough to be challenging but it hasn't veered into "puzzle sicko" territory. You can get real stuck on puzzles for hours, but there hasn't been a puzzle yet I wasn't able to solve. The intent is for each level to show you some kind of interesting application or combination of the mechanics, not to have the hardest levels possible.
After 34 hours and 163 puzzles I've barely seen what this game has to offer (on a Stream Blow said something like ~900-1000 individual levels and 1400-1500 puzzles total) and only caught some glimpses at the true breath of what this game has to offer, but so far I highly recommend it to everybody who enjoy puzzle games.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The chief thing I can say is that it's a puzzle game, and the puzzles are great. Really great. I'm normally a fan of puzzle games, but wouldn't usually point at a specific puzzle and say "that's it, I love that one", but this game every dozen puzzles I'm seeing one I want to frame and put on my wall. And the other eleven ain't bad either.
And of course there are a thousand of them. I've played games with a thousand puzzles before, but they're usually of the Big Book of Sudokus style where every puzzle is you demonstrating your skills as opposed to being a true act of creative thinking. This game feels as huge as it is. And the sequencing of them is well-designed enough I've never gotten stuck in overall progression due to a single incompatible puzzle, but nor has the sense of progression been lacking.
Pretty game, too. Very stylish.
All the flaws I can see with the game seem to derive from it being rushed to release — I don't know if it was rushed to release, but that's what it smells like. Some examples: the dialogue for levels feels both disordered (you play the first level where you see characters A and B meet, they don't react; later on you play another level with them and they act like it's the first meeting) and frequently missing (especially later on you'll get several hours with no dialogue at all, except for one random inconsequential level in the middle).
While lacking dialogue isn't necessarily a major complaint for a puzzle game, there were also a few areas where the performance tanked. Usually the game performed smoothly at its capped 60fps for me, but there were a few specific effects that would instantly bring it to a struggling 30. Considering how the demo had many more of these it feels like a few performance-eaters were simply missed at launch.
Anyway, really good, instant recommend if you like your puzzles.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

No space is wasted, no tools are given to you that aren't required, there are some misdirections intended to stump you but nothing that feels unfair... it's just an absolute blast to find the "aha" moment in every puzzle. And every single one has a new "aha" that will recontextualize how a mechanic works in your brain, communicated directly to the player without words or explicit direction. You just figure it out through experimentation and the design of the puzzles guiding you into new understandings. Just... chef's kiss game design. Props to the original creators of the four "base games" used to make this one, and the creator of PuzzleScript, increpare, whose efforts paved the way to Order of the Sinking Star.
The art is gorgeous, and works in tandem with the design of the game in many clever ways. The music sits in the perfect space between properly conveying the mood of a scene without dominating your mind, so you can still think about the puzzle you're facing - rather than distracting me, I found that I was much more focused on the problem at hand when I closed my eyes and listened to the music while thinking through things. The combination of these elements with some loose mystery-driven narrative threads makes for something that is hard to put down and even harder to get out of your thoughts when you do.
If you're struggling with how Jonathan Blow's public opinions make you feel about playing this game, know that there were many, many talented individuals whose collective efforts created something genuinely beautiful and special, and just because you disagree with the most public-facing one doesn't mean you shouldn't try this game. I detest his politics, but I'm comfortable separating the art from one of the artists on this.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tWhat an absolute banger. Like most of Jon's fans I was waiting for this game for the last 10 years. Even though I'm not a puzzle guy I enjoyed The Witness but it didn't really click for me in the same way that Braid once did. This game clicked almost immediately. I wanted to give it a spin before going to sleep but got sucked in for 3+ hours and can't stop thinking about it. The atmosphere, soundtrack, characters and gameplay are all great and work together amazingly well. And I'm pretty sure more cool stuff awaits me later.
Don't skip this guys, this is gaming history right here (even though the genre is a bit niche for me)

Here, the puzzles so far are all uniquely challenging but elegant, and the challenge of the puzzle is figuring out the new problem it very clearly presents. This can still be very difficult, but it doesn't feel annoying. If the game keeps up this kind of design, I may actually finish all the 1 million puzzles in this game.

The team at Thekla have done it again, taking a puzzle genre and adding in layer after layer in a way that is both beautiful to look at and doesn't over-stay its welcome. Each puzzle feels unique and challenging with multiple puzzles culminating in "checkpoints" of sorts where you prove you understand the mechanics. I've barely scratched the surface but it's obvious the road ahead looks the same as behind.
Pros:
- Gorgeous art. Take some time admire the backgrounds while you're scratching your head!
- Fluid motion and mechanics. Characters feel good to play even though it's all on a grid.
- Puzzles! Constantly evolving and testing you.
- Some kind of mysterious story. Makes the puzzling feel like it has some purpose to it other than pure challenge.
- Very good voice acting. I'm often torn between listening to the characters and racing through the puzzles.
Cons:
- Doesn't run particularly well on SteamDeck on high quality settings. On lower ones it's smooth as silk.

It’s one of those special games you simply cannot stop playing.
