The runaway feels like a staight-up modded class with how strong she is. Her applying burn with 100% probability is insane, I beat my all time high in the endless mode with the runaway on the first try. You'd expect them to add some new tough enemies to compensate for how strong the new classes are, but there are none in this dlc. The runaway and the duelist ruin the entire preparation part of the game, where some classes are stronger in some areas while weaker in others. These two are so strong it is quite literally irrational to not have them in your party regardless of where you're going. The Fire's Edge is not much cheaper than the Crimsot Court, yet all it adds is two classes (badly made at that) and a few trinkets. Unfortunately, this looks too much like a cash grab.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

They don't have fire resistances and there are no new enemies that wield fire. What's the point? We have new tools, but nothing new to use them on.
New edit, I tried bringing the duelist to the first crimson court mission. Took 6 game crashes to finally load in. When I finally did, the quest objectives did not spawn, making the mission impossible. Waste of time and money.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The idea of having unique trinkets that offer stronger boons in exchange for durability is a novel concept and something I found myself enjoying at the start of my newest playthrough. This adds a new, fresh, and unique take on lower level trinkets that are normally outclassed the second you get into Weeks 15+ (that is if you're playing well) and was genuinely something I enjoyed. Then I got to the bosses trinket pool.
Now for those of you who might not understand, beating bosses reward very rare trinkets, one of the only consistent ways to grind for them, with some being almost required to meaningfully engage with the late game. Take the Focus Ring, a must have as champion enemies get such a mechanically artificial boost to their dodge that having it equipped is mandatory if you want a hit rate above 70%. Not all very rare trinkets are made equally of course, and sometimes you may have to cycle between weeks before something useful comes up for grabs.
Now I say this with reverence and respect as Red Hook Studios have created a game I've sunk several hundred hours of my life into and greatly enjoy. How ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid do you have to be to bloat this already shoddy pool with new very rare trinkets that have d u r a b i l i t y? I play on Bloodmoon, I already have a fire lit under my ass with a timer counting down. The last thing I need is to waste these precious weeks and limited chances at these guaranteed very rare trinkets rerolling the same boss rewards because I got useless loot rolls for the fifth week in a row. Maybe that's on me for playing with this extra challenge, or maybe it's on the developers for not considering how this would impact an entire game mode. I'll let you decide, I'm sure it's somewhere in the middle.
I mean, at its best this might be a questionable game design decision if these trinkets were actually decent, but these feel straight up lifted from DD2 and I don't say that as a compliment.
Take the new lantern, it heals 4 hp at the end of every turn, lasts a whole six turns before being destroyed, and at the end of a battle you randomly get 1-6 turns added back onto it. This feels like it was added with total tone deafness. See Darkest Dungeon doesn't rely on an artificially restricted healing system that requires three prayer tokens, the targeted hero being under 33% of their health, and for it to be a waxing gibus moon to be able to heal. So why would I waste a trinket slot on something a medium level antiquarian can heal for in one move? Furthermore, Darkest Dungeon is going to screw you over in the RNG department eventually. So it's only a matter of time before this subpar trinket is going to be dust in the wind even if you're just doing a straight dps race. So pray tell, why the hell would I want to waste the opportunity to unlock a reliable, consistent, and PERMANENT upgrade in exchange for something this situational and fleeting.
Now I understand there is also a very rare trinket (Im blanking on the name rn) that lasts six expeditions and serves as a sponge to take the cost of durability off these other expendables; but all this does is kick this egregious design flaw further down the road. Furthermore, now you're sacrificing an additional trinket slot to be able to engage meaningfully with these fleeting trinkets. If that wasn't bad enough it adds an extra 20% stress taken for your hero. These added stress modifiers are normally reserved for trinkets that offer huge bonuses such as ancestral trinkets, any of collectors trophies, and trinkets that straight up boost your damage. Does this really seem like something on par with an ancestral map, pen, or pistol? Does this seem like a fair exchange instead of a permanent 30% boost to your healing skills? ♥♥♥♥ no.
"Ok Sparta, surely they can't be all bad." I hear you sigh, growing tired of my griping. Lets walk down the list because brother, I beg to differ.
There's a clock that lasts 12 missions, sounds great right? I mean, that's double the durability of most of these new trinkets. But oh wait, its just a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ legendary bracer. Essentially, every drained durability stacks a -3% modifier off your max health every time you come back (on top of the -10% it drains off you from the start) in exchange for a measly added 3% damage per week. So essentially, in exchange for committing literal in game months on top of losing over 40% of your hero's max health, you have only a slight lead on the Legendary Bracer. This isn't even considering most hero's won't be able to use this safely with only select front liners such as Leper or MAA not actively enlisting in a suicide mission with this ♥♥♥♥ equipped. Now am I saying this can't be busted with the right hero, set up, quirks, team, buffs, boss, and CC's bloodlust? Of course not. Is it very situational, time consuming, and outclassed in nearly every regard though? Absolutely. Once again, all of this compared to the Legendary Bracer's consistent, permanent, 20% increase in damage in exchange for a single speed and 10% extra stress. Oh and if the hero that has the clock equipped dies, it breaks automatically. Red Hook, if this is a bad joke no one is laughing.
There's another very rare trinket that gives you a random trinket every time you come back that lasts a whole five runs. That's literally it. Why would I want to waste the chance for an Focus Ring, let alone an inventory or trinket slot, in exchange for some random, usually low tier, potentially garbage, trinket? I mean I can already pick out trinkets on the map that catch my eye, and antiquarian has had this in her toolkit for years. This should be a rare trinket at best; this is not worth the sacrifice, its just more unnecessary very rare trinket bloat.
Listen, I'm not going to list down every trinket, but if you still want to get this DLC, I'd hold off. Wait until the wiki is updated at least so you can know what you're getting into. I sure wish I did.

It adds two new heroes from Darkest Dungeon 2, and both are incredibly powerful. It also adds a new enemy burning mechanic. Definitely worth the money. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI really, really hope Runaway's going to get balanced soon because good lord... Burn as an unresisted DoT (barring 2 notable boss encounter exceptions) that is the fastest to build in the game, the easiest to spread in the game (with it also spreading on death naturally), and that provides Runaway with +25% bonus damage on her Backdraft *per Burn stack* on the target. Sure, it deals damage after enemies' turns and halves after each proc... but since stuns are already one of the best tools in the game, that first weakness is pretty much removed and burn is so easy to stack that halving it doesn't matter.
Not to mention she just has some of the best moves in the game with no compensation for it really. Take a look at Grave Robber— a character with a pretty similar stat spread to Runaway— and her 'Shadow Fade' ability: a rank 1/2 Stealth that buffs her damage and crit for 1 turn after using it and moves her back 2 ranks, so you alternate this with her highly damaging, high crit Lunge that moves her forward 2. Solid dancer combo that makes her stealthed 50% of the time and buffs her dodge a good amount.
Runaway has a similar move that is an *all* rank Stealth (said stealth is disabled if she moves into rank 1/2) that moves her back 2 and provides her with *3* rounds of stealth after using it. Those 3 rounds also come with *+50% burn* stacks on application, AND a self-heal which is 5 HP per round at max level. This ability also has no limits on its use.
Her best attacks cannot be used in rank 4 so it seemed that they anticipated this being a problematic loop... but if you just run 2 Runaways in rank 3/4, this is no issue: one is a Burn bot (which also applies a debuff that makes the Burn halving into a -25%), the other presses Backdraft, and you have two party members that are untargetable, self-healing, and have the best damage in the game. It's insane how overtuned this character is, she really is still a modded character at heart.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Both the Runaway and Duellist are very fun classes to use. Most of their skills are the same as in the 2nd game, but they have been reworked to some degree to fit better with mechanics of this game. Duellist is built almost entirely around riposte and moving between the ranks, whilst Runaway is the unique burn skills user in this game (the burn mechanic was initially introduced in the 2nd game, so no hero classes in this one have it).
I won't say this DLC is essential to get, especially if you're only starting out with Darkest Dungeon, but if you're already a veteran and love the game, then this DLC is more stuff to spice up the gameplay. I can say both of the classes are pretty strong and useful; might even be considered OP (depending on who you ask). Runaway's burn mechanic is strong against most enemies as it penetrates enemy armor PROT (like bleed and blight) and doesn't get any resistance checks. Duellist can change between aggressive and defensive stances as a free action, each time applying a riposte to herself. Her aggressive skills deal good damage, and one can even stun. Her defensive skills give her great buffs, particularly sky high amounts of dodge (which she needs as she's a hero with low maxHP). Also surprisingly, the way Duellist is handled here is easier to get a hang of than in the 2nd game. You just switch between aggressive and defensive stances at will and know what skills each stance grants, rather than needing too much set up to get her in the right stance.
The new trinkets which have limited use all have their own criteria. For example, some have a limited number of quests you can equip them for, others are limited based on how many times they trigger. Some of them have unique ways to replenish their usage. For example, one trinket I got as a quest reward does a small amount of heal to the hero at the end of each turn, but it receives some extra uses remaining at the end of combat, so it can last you a long time if you end fights within a few turns (which you should do 95%+ of the time).
So no surprises - it's Darkest Dungeon, so of course it's going to be good content. If you already love the base game, there's no reason to dislike this DLC. It adds more good stuff to play around with.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The Runaway basically offers a new burn mechanic that is pretty useful especially in certain boss fights and Duelist is a damage dancer that's a little complex but she's really good. It also offers new trinkets with some new mechanics.
I recommend if you're already a big fan of those 2 characters or you just want something new in Darkest Dungeon

The Fire’s Edge is a short expansion that doesn't really add anything new to three games, only two existing characters and a few mechanics from the sequel in a very deliberate and superficial way. Bringing the Duelist and the Runaway into the first game as paid DLC was a very odd and unnecessary decision, it feels like a desperate attempt to keep the game alive through official content separate from the community's mods.
It's really disappointing to see the same dishonest monetization decisions that affected the character availability in the sequel now being applied to the first game. These choices involved bringing back characters from the first game through purchasable DLCs, and now the same thing is happening the other way around, with the first game borrowing characters and game mechanics from the sequel.
However, to be honest these characters are surprisingly better designed in this game than in the sequel, where they feel very limited by the token system. For example, the Duelist is an incredibly strong option with a nice reworked design that is easier to understand and much simpler to play with shifting and riposte teams. Her gameplay longer requires more abilities to switch or maintain a stance, making it more comfortable to focus only on a couple of skills during combat. She's as fun to play as other DOT characters, but her gameplay feels repetitive and slightly incomplete without her iconic smokescreen or cauterize skills in combat. The lack of a fire resistance stat on enemies makes this character unbalanced and unreasonably strong, allowing her to inflict burn on any enemy without an RNG check. I believe they should have added a fire resistance stat for all enemies, just as they did with bleeding and blight status effects, or at the very least they could have rebalanced the burn DOT.

The trinkets added in this expansion are very similar to the consumable items seen in the sequel. The only positive thing this expansion did for me was make me go back to the first game, which is way more fun and far better balanced than the sequel. Not really worth getting
The Fire’s Edge is a short expansion that doesn't really add anything new to three games, only two existing characters and a few mechanics from the sequel in a very deliberate and superficial way. Bringing the Duelist and the Runaway into the first game as paid DLC was a very odd and unnecessary decision, it feels like a desperate attempt to keep the game alive through official content separate from the community's mods.
It's really disappointing to see the same dishonest monetization decisions that affected the character availability in the sequel now being applied to the first game. These choices involved bringing back characters from the first game through purchasable DLCs, and now the same thing is happening the other way around, with the first game borrowing characters and game mechanics from the sequel.
However, to be honest these characters are surprisingly better designed in this game than in the sequel, where they feel very limited by the token system. For example, the Duelist is an incredibly strong option with a nice reworked design that is easier to understand and much simpler to play with shifting and riposte teams. Her gameplay longer requires more abilities to switch or maintain a stance, making it more comfortable to focus only on a couple of skills during combat.
