- Shoot and Loot game, you visit Point of Interest or houses and get stuff
- Community management is simple, you upgrade your base, keep them happy, give them guns (they have unlimited ammo as an AI) to fend off siege (could be better with improved AI, lore and more custom features on SoD 3)
- Gameplay is repetitive if you're not keen on experimenting or further challenging your playthrough (e.g. no guns except crossbows) When you play on Lethal, you never go back to nightmare
- Certain character traits and perks are rare, I hope that in SoD 3, players could select and customize their starting community or characters at the start
- Enemy or NPC communities are too passive, not enough interactions, hopefully they fix this in SoD 3 and have factions (make it more like a sandbox where you can customize how many can appear)
- Maps are limited, there is no variation which is fine considering this is base off a particular storyline of the game, I just hope there is kind of a variability or even a map generation as an option (might not be possible but just hoping)
- Not enough things to discover once you've done a few playthroughs, Daybreak isn't as good and is grindy, Heartland is the only interesting story mode in the game.
- AI needs improvement, wonky, not enough variation of interactions on actions or idle from the player controlled characters, also Voice are almost identical or same across each type.
- I have no issues with the character models and how they look but it could be improved, majority of them looks the same on a certain angle, their character thumbnail is misleading.

The real strength is not just fighting zombies, but managing your community, choosing survivors, building a base, balancing resources, developing skills, and deciding who is worth risking on dangerous missions. Every community feels a little different, and the combination of permadeath, random survivors, loot, enclaves, plague hearts, vehicles, and difficulty settings gives the game a huge amount of replayability.
It is not perfect. Missions can become repetitive, survivor dialogue and enclave behavior can feel limited, and after enough hours you start to notice where the systems could be deeper. I would love more meaningful relationships between survivors, more varied missions, deeper base customization, and smarter NPC behavior. But despite those flaws, the core gameplay loop is incredibly addictive. Few games make me care this much about individual survivors or make a simple supply run feel genuinely risky.

The messed up time management mechanics prevent you from really enjoying the game at your own pace; you are forced to constantly hurry up, passing by all the interesting locations and not being able to take in the atmosphere.
I am very much looking forward to SoD3, though. hopefully they will get it right next time, because there is so much potential...
This should be a fun game to play for me. It has everything I like: I play in a post-apocalyptic setting (ckeck), with survival mechanics (check!), base building (CHECK!) and you are surrounded by zombies (DOUBLE CHECK!).
But why can't I recommend this game, then?
First off, the good stuff. The setting is great and the scaleable difficulty is great: you can make it as easy or as tough to beat the game as you want. And there are many maps you can choose from to make a stand and try and survive and bulid your own mini society.
Also, the game runs great and it is still actively supported by the dev team, even to this date..!
But now the bad stuff: community management feels very light.
Characters aren't really defined and there aren't many meaningful interactions between your community members.
As soon as you realize this, you will stop caring for WHO your community members are, and just start looking at WHAT they are (i.e.which bonuses, skills and professions they bring to your community).
For instance: someone wants to join your community and maybe they are mildly interesting as a character, but when you look at their character sheet, you see that he/she is a cook and you already have two members with cooking profession, so you wave them off. Because by now you are just searching for a character that is a car mechanic so that you will finally get to make repair kits for your busted up car park.
Sometimes you just break up another community just so you can recruit one of their members with a profession you desperately need, even though 'story wise' this goes against the grain of all you have been through together...
You just end up treating other communities and your own community members as objects, like you are solving a complicated jigsaw puzzle instead of forming a complicated, interesting community consisting of desperate survivors that you really care about.
Another way in which this game feels very light on mechanics, is the inconsequence of your choices. Let me expand: even though you are asked to make tough decisions, like: who to trade with, who to expell from your community, if you're gonna fight another communitiy outright or give them a shot at dedemption...
Ulitimately, it doesn't matter. Even if you manage to ruin your relationship with every community on the map and they have all left or been destroyed in a shootout with them, you can always put out a radio signal to find new communities to start over.
And speaking of ruining your relationships with other communities and see them leave your playthrough... That is gonna happen a lot if you are not inclined to play this game running around like some glorified post-apocalyptic UPS delivery service.
That's due to what is by far my biggest gripe: time management! It outright sucks. This game should be called Stress of Delivery 2!
EVERY community you encounter, has its demands, request, emergency. And that in essence is a good game mechanic, were it not for one glaring design flaw: there is ALWAYS (and I do mean always) some demand by one community or the other. Most of the time at the same time and they are all time sensitive...
From the time you have encountered 3 other commuities you are constantly in a situation that one or 2 of them have a (re)quest for you.
And you better get to it ASAP, too! Because otherwise you will miss the opportunity to help them out. Because if you fail to help them out, they will leave.
Mind you: not after a couple of failures to help them out, but as soon as you miss ONE (re)quest, the community involved will pack up and leave for good..!
So there is no room for error... ...but also, you don't know how to choose wisely between two requests at the same time
Let me explain: most of the time you don't know how much time a request will take. Somethimes the request is easily fulfilled, but on other occasions, it will take you a trip half around the map to find one item or community member, so you will end up running out the clock on that other community that also has an outstanding quest for you.
So sometimes it just gets down to dumb luck when you choose in which order you willl help two communities that have a quest pending that decides your succes. This is baffling to me...
All in all: even though the maps are great and the atmosphere is too, YOU DON'T HAVE TIME TO ENJOY THE GAME at your own leisure.
You can't go exploring that interesting town you just drove through and start searching for stuff you need for your base or to just stop to take in the atmosphere...
You just CONSTANTLY get radioed with stuff you have to go do immediately or else lose the quest and lose the community that just gave you that quest.
And whilst you can adjust many game parameters, you CANNOT adjust the frequency of radio request you'll receive or lenghten the completion time you are alotted by adjusting some slider.
So you just end up running/racing around the map, trying to fulfill every other community's need. And this problem is exacerbated when you play in a map that has many hills, mountains and other obstacles that you have to drive around...

This game has a great concept, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

The biggest problem for me is how the zombie spawning works. I don't expect an area to stay permanently safe after you clear it. Zombies should wander in, hordes should move through, and new threats should naturally appear. That's part of the point of a zombie survival game.
The problem is when you clear an area and turn around, only to have zombies suddenly appear again almost immediately. It makes clearing buildings and dealing with nearby threats feel pointless because it doesn't feel like the zombies are actually coming from somewhere. It feels like the game is simply spawning them back in because you aren't looking.

Infestations are another major problem. You can clear an infestation, move on, and sometimes only a couple of minutes later there's another infestation, sometimes even in the exact same building you just cleared.

The human AI is horrible.
Survivors panic, make terrible decisions, and have some incredibly strange movement. They'll run around in ways that make no sense, get themselves into dangerous situations, and generally seem more likely to make a situation worse than actually help.

The multiplayer is also terrible.
The tether severely limits how far players can actually separate and explore, which is especially frustrating in a game that is supposed to be about exploring a large open world.
There are also plenty of other multiplayer limitations that make co-op feel like an afterthought rather than a properly designed multiplayer experience.

The combat is clunky, and Blood Plague can become more annoying than challenging.

Combat feels bad, gunplay feels bad, driving feels bad, looting doesn't feel that fun, "base management" is just deciding what you want to have built in 6 or so of slots in your base and that's it, and also feels bad, not to mention all those people you recruit do ♥♥♥♥ all in the base, except letting you craft something thanks to them knowing f.e. chemistry, and occasionally they will add some trash to you stash. You can't send them to scavenge, can't assign them tasks.
The way the radiant quests are given out and paced is ok-ish, and the banter of the characters adds some life to the grind.
But all this would still get a positive from me, because while it's all very shallow and trite, there is a lot of stuff added, to the point that quantity somehow makes up for quality.
