\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tSoD2 is a solid zombie survival game with base building elements, and is pretty great in most sense as you can do most of what is expected in a zombie survival game. Loot supplies house to house, build up your base, connect with your neighbors and eventually build a solid community with you as the head. BUT. The games has its caveats that i personally don't like. Neighbor and community relations rely on you to do favors for them, but as it is, they rely way too much on you, which usually means pulling you into the boonies, knee deep in plague heart territory to pick up a bunch or resources, or a person, or they will absolutely hate you for not helping them. It can be awkward especially when you're trying to perform your own complex missions and they suddenly ask, no, demand you to do their bidding, in the other side of the map, no less, lest they won't like you no more. Other than that, it's a solid game and i still recommend it.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I am not a big fan of survival sandboxes or zombie themed games but this one has a fundation of gameplay systems that I found rather itneresting with a lot of potential. Unfortunately, the lack of depth and myraid bugs and janky controls make this feel like an arcade expereince more than an immersive survival sim. The issue is furthe excaerbated as the game ensures your choices and character deaths are permanent with no way to manually save or reload. While the foundations of building a base and recruitting survivors to play a dedicated role based on their skills is interesting, the progression is far too short and they eventually feel rather limited in the variety of options you can have your community members do by remote. it is highly recommended to play co-op as the limited progression can quickly become boring lacking an intelligent NPC and enemy AI. The game has multiple maps to explore but the campaign never incentivizes you to go beyond the region map you start from, its purely a personal choice. You can easily finish the main campaign in the starting region without ever stepping out to other areas.
Heartlands is a more linear expereince compared to the base game. It streamlines many of the options from the base game where you start and maintain a single large base from the start while uncovering the concentrated effects of the zombie plage in Turbbull valley which is reputed to be the focal point and find a way to fight back against the unique mutations of a plague wall that needs to be weakend using a special grenade that can only be manufactured by getting in touch with the remanents of a military science team that was sent to study the occurance. You do not choose a community leader and most survivors are provided to you over time by completing objectives that unlock unique fascilities and functions throughout your base. A relatively shorter experience with a very annoying final mission that will have you destroy series of palgue walls while being attacked by hordes of zombies as you slowly whittle down its three stages of health.
There is potential here but its not very well explored in this iteration but a sequel is on the way and one can keep their fingers crossed that it allows more depth and custimization as to how you can shape your base nad communities while providing more personality to the characters and a much more involved story experience in a campaign.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

You can spend hours building something that holds, then lose it because one bad call or one bad spawn turns the night into a problem you can’t outrun. That pressure is the whole game. Everything else is just the systems that make the pressure real.
I’ve put enough time into it that the maps are familiar and the loops are known. It still doesn’t feel like a solved problem. The random communities, the way the infestation spreads when you ignore it, the fact that a solid run can still end because the wrong juggernaut showed up at the wrong base. You get this compact open world to explore, a community to build up, resources to gather, skills to develop, and better gear, cars, and weapons to unlock. Loved this and the first one since I was but a wee' lad due to the scavenging, base expansion, and zombie kills. Plus, learning about the special infected and how the plague would mutate always fascinated me, much like other zombie games (L4D2, World War Z, The Last of Us, etc).

If you are a COD zombies fan that wants to move to a zombie survival game, this is a great entry way for £5. Alternatively, I'd suggest Project Zomboid.
SOD3 needs to address several things, tethered multiplayer is a poor choice, the constant need to gather resources does not provide a satisfying experience and above all, skills need more meaning in a community.
