Investigating the disappearance of a mysterious spirit of the North as a journalist through a magic crystal ball in 1921, because apparently, that's just a normal Thursday. The Bird of the North is a short, story-rich and atmospheric detective adventure played entirely from the comfort of your desk. The sister of a missing spirit gives you a literal window into the past, along with the tools to inspect about a dozen scenes, retrace the Spirit of the North's path, uncover the truth and eventually publish an article denouncing the hypocrisy of the Empire.
The gameplay revolves around context deduction: you have to figure out who said what from a list of possibilities, some of which are deliberately false to throw you off. I was told this was similar to The Return of Obra Dinn, but I haven't completed that one, so I can't confirm nor infirm the comparison.
The tutorial is clear and intuitive, the mouse controls are easy, and you can zoom in when inspecting scenes. The little aesthetic is lovely, the art is quite nice, and the mechanics make for a fun little investigation. There are also fullscreen, X/Y axis inversion, view sensitivity, and separate music and sound effect sliders. Most achievements follow the normal progression, with only one side achievement and two speedrun achievements sitting outside the main path.
The main issue is that some of the contextual deductions can be difficult to decipher, particularly between two specific characters whose dialogue can feel interchangeable. I ran into this a couple of times and it felt more like trial and error than deduction. There's also one dialogue option, “The snow”, that still makes absolutely no sense to me even after replaying the game. The date format is also a little odd in English, using formats like “12th December 1921” instead of “December 12th, 1921”, which is probably a translation issue. Completionists should also know that the 60 and 120 minutes speedrun achievements can be earned simultaneously and don't require a first playthrough. It took me around 15 minutes with a guide to grab them, but they're worth keeping in mind if you don't enjoy being rushed.
The other thing to keep in mind is the length. I could have finished the whole thing in under 1h if I hadn't been streaming, with a solo playthrough estimated at around 2h or less depending on how much time you spend investigating. It's a cozy little mystery to unwrap, with no particularly difficult puzzles, just social deduction and putting events in the right order. It's not trying to reinvent the detective genre, but it's a pleasant little evening investigation if you're in the mood for something atmospheric, short and easy to settle into, preferably with a hot cocoa nearby.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI feel bad about giving this a thumbs down as there is a lot to like about it. It's nicely presented and has a good atmosphere. It's very much aiming to be like Obra Dinn, but, for me, it misses the mark due to a collection of relatively minor issues that combine to undermine the gameplay. The visual elements are a bit under developed, so it's difficult to follow characters through, which is exacerbated by the near complete absence of names. More generally, the storytelling is just missing a bit of continuity and colour - of course, you are meant to be working out a fantasy tale, but there are leaps of faith that can't really be deduced from what's in the game. Finally, the dialogue options that you have to pick from are not well translated, so the English is stilted and, in a couple of instances, indecipherable. I felt I had to brute force some of the answers as options were just too similar or lacked specific clues. All this said, I enjoyed elements of this and I hope they do more.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I saw it recommended by none other than Ernests Kļaviņš of Color Gray (Golden Idol), so I had to give it a shot! While it's not a must-play, it's a lovely way to spend an evening at an affordable price.
The game is clearly heavily inspired by The Return of the Obra Dinn: The art style, sound design, supernatural story elements, and general gameplay of exploring a static scene feel very familiar. But this is no cheap copycat; this game forges its own unique path. Unlike in Obra Dinn, Each scene must by solved by assigning lines of speech to each character from a "line bank" that includes red herrings. Most are fairly obvious, but there were definitely a couple that briefly tripped me up. Additionally, the scenes aren't experienced chronologically, and a meta-puzzle involves putting each of the 15-or-so scenes into the correct order. The difficulty is quite low and there is no Obra Dinn-style deduction required.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tBird of the north is a really clever obra dinn ripoff (laudatory) made by a very nice person that absolutely needs a co-developer or something.
The core gameplay replaces “fill in the names and deaths of these people in a flashback” with “choose what these people were saying in the moment of the flashback from a pre-written list.”
That’s a brilliant iteration and it should’ve stopped there, but the developer Wile E. Coyoted themselves repeatedly with elaborate trappings that just didn’t work.
Before I get to that, the devs first language isn’t english (neither is mine) and their posts on the discussion boards are difficult to parse because of that. So if you compare that writing to the writing in-game, this is a wild success. If you compare writing in any game in Obra’s class to the writing in-game…this falls flat on its face. Punctuation, capitalization, and spacing are just suggestions. Idioms are translated directly from another language (French I think?), and of course, lots and lots of typos. To their credit, the developer is very earnest about trying to address all these issues and because of that if I had more time I’d help them out. Instead I’m going to cut them some slack for this particular issue.
Back to Wile E. Coyote, the game tries to do a simple task (setup mission control) in the most ludicrously elaborate way possible. Within 5 minutes, over a dozen locked chests and polaroids, a typewriter, a globe, a map/pinboard, a crystal ball, and an owl are crammed into any available space on your desk with very little explanation. You’re then handed keys at seemingly random intervals by the owl to unlock the chests so you can see the item inside (which does nothing) and use the polaroid next to it to view a new flashback from your crystal ball. You’re then supposed to click one of four pushpins on the globe to flip the pinboard to a different map that has some character pictures (that you match to a fact from a bizarre grid of 20+ options) and empty slots where you put the polaroids to order them chronologically. The typewriter tells you how close you are to correctly doing the order and the character fact matching. \n\n\t\t\t\tThe core gameplay replaces “fill in the names and deaths of these people in a flashback” with “choose what these people were saying in the moment of the flashback from a pre-written list.”
That’s a brilliant iteration and it should’ve stopped there, but the developer Wile E. Coyoted themselves repeatedly with elaborate trappings that just didn’t work.
Before I get to that, the devs first language isn’t english (neither is mine) and their posts on the discussion boards are difficult to parse because of that. So if you compare that writing to the writing in-game, this is a wild success. If you compare writing in any game in Obra’s class to the writing in-game…this falls flat on its face. Punctuation, capitalization, and spacing are just suggestions. Idioms are translated directly from another language (French I think?), and of course, lots and lots of typos. To their credit, the developer is very earnest about trying to address all these issues and because of that if I had more time I’d help them out. Instead I’m going to cut them some slack for this particular issue.
Back to Wile E. Coyote, the game tries to do a simple task (setup mission control) in the most ludicrously elaborate way possible. Within 5 minutes, over a dozen locked chests and polaroids, a typewriter, a globe, a map/pinboard, a crystal ball, and an owl are crammed into any available space on your desk with very little explanation. You’re then handed keys at seemingly random intervals by the owl to unlock the chests so you can see the item inside (which does nothing) and use the polaroid next to it to view a new flashback from your crystal ball. You’re then supposed to click one of four pushpins on the globe to flip the pinboard to a different map that has some character pictures (that you match to a fact from a bizarre grid of 20+ options) and empty slots where you put the polaroids to order them chronologically. The typewriter tells you how close you are to correctly doing the order and the character fact matching. A good filler game for anyone who loved Return of the Obra Dinn. Nothing to mind-wracking. A cozy mystery, detective game with a well-enough fleshed-out story.
Was hoping the puzzle mechanics would be more in-depth, and was very much let down. The whole game felt like a slightly obscure mystery; when you figure one of the chapter's out, you can begin to piece together the rest of the game.
If the game was twice as long, and had some additional mechanics to add to the detective aspect of the game, I would have happily paid double or more the cost it is now, and it would easily have been one of my top games of the year.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I loved everything from scenes where you need to select dialogue lines for each character to the construction of the general timeline. It's great, done extremely well and I had fun all the way until the game was finished.
The only thing that holds this game down is the fact that it's VERY SHORT. I spent 3 hours on it and 2 of them were in main menu when I launched the game and then remembered that I needed to do something else, so I left game running and when I came back I finished it in about and hour. After final scene I expected there to be a part 2 of the story and hopefully part 3 after that, but no, first table that game presents is, sadly, all there is.
