The attention to detail is incredible.
Target practice sure. But with a ballistics gel that flops and hold the bullet air path in gel block like irl.

A few different ways to extract once you are full of loot. So much for me to get familiar with, it's useful loot not junk. Haven't picked up any junk loot yet. Good gameplay loop, kill, loot, try to extract lol. You can get injured and have medi supplies for the aid.
This is exactly what I've been needing in my life.
10/10 in my opinion.
Oh and yes it plays absolutely perfect on the steamdeck. Optimized very well, Can play for quite a while unplugged. As it doesn't drain the battery super fast.
I may not have a lot of hours showing here. But I played a bunch of hours on the demo. Looking forward to how this game grows.

\n\t\t\t\t\tHOPE 01 is an excellent game and an interesting combination of mechanics and inspirations, and I highly recommend you play it. To address the elephant in the room immediately: the game is currently in "early access" but really that tag shouldn't fool you; this is a feature complete game playable start to finish with multiple endings and a healthy amount of quests, hundreds of items, almost a hundred different enemies and bosses, and hundreds of highly interconnected rooms. The dev expects the game to hit 1.0 within a year or less of EA, but really this is a finished product with 50-70 hours of gameplay. The price-to-content ratio is practically untouchable compared not just to other indie titles but also to AAA titles with massive budgets and teams.

First, the game is challenging. It does not hide its Metroidvania and Dark Souls inspirations and you will find yourself shooting, jumping, crouching, rolling, and fighting dangerous enemies and bullet-hell bosses all while managing both stamina and resources, and collecting items, materials and weapons/gear as if you were playing an extraction shooter. You will be asked to sometimes play slow and carefully and other times play at breakneck pace, leaving little to no room for error or mistakes. There are also deep Resident Evil inspirations in the overall themes and some gameplay mechanics, but in my opinion the game plays most like a combination of CONSCRIPT, Metal Slug, and Dark Souls. Be warned, dying on a mission (or "raid" as they're referred to in-game) will result in you losing any gear you either found or brought with you. Plan accordingly, use the player stash back at your hideout, and upgrade your character with perks and skills whenever possible as they remain permanent no matter how many times you die. I cannot stress the importance of these perks enough. Some of them include using your flashlight, knife, and a pistol in both hands simultaneously, while others include item usage speed, low-light vision, recoil control, inventory capacity, and more. They are extremely important for your success. Further, items you have collected and scanned at your base can be crafted to replace ones you have lost so long as you have the resources to do so. And as a final warning, navigation is intentionally dense and confusing. There is no map and navigation is done by using cans of spray paint to mark walls with various symbols to help you find your way to and from various locations.

Second, the game is a little silly. It has cultural references all over it, some recent and some dated. It tends to both take itself very seriously and also not at all, with some quests, story beats, and endings being thoughtful philosophical expositions on matters of life, death, and human nature, and others being absolutely absurd and goofy references to popular culture and anime. This tonal roller coaster is, however, extremely charming. The player is often made to grapple with the dangers of the world and the meaning of life, while also being shown just how silly and ludicrous such things really are in the grand scheme, or how the smallest interactions between two people can mean more to them than anything else. While the story isn't enormous, rather it is sparse and thought provoking in a Dark Souls sort of way, it is nevertheless endearing.

Third, the dev seems like a very kind person. He is on the Steam discussions and his Discord every day answering questions, listening to feedback and providing hints, bug fixes, and advice. The game receives anywhere from one to four light patches or bug fixes/balance changes nearly every day, and when combined with the dev's sheer kindness reveal an individual truly dedicated to his game. If you're stuck, lost, confused, or finding a challenge too difficult to overcome you can count on the dev or his small but faithful community to be there to help you figure it out.

I've spent a lot of time trying to think of something negative to say about HOPE 01 but I really can't. I think there's a single non-boss enemy towards the end of the game that I find extremely obnoxious, a sort of icy ghost woman sort of thing with a frightening amount of powerful and obnoxious attacks, but in the end it didn't really matter. This enemy didn't stop me from beating the game and it won't stop me from continuing to play. Quite frankly the game is just great, solid, fun, entertaining, addicting, and difficult to put down, and you should play it right now. Support this dev and support this game, it's worth it.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tThis is a very good, simplified extraction shooter with interesting organic storytelling. There is no direct story guidance, or even an introduction to the plot via cutscene. You kinda just get thrown into the gameplay tutorial and find a vague note telling you to find something. There's no elaboration on how significant the thing is, or where to find it, just that you have to find it for some reason. However, despite being in early access, there are multiple endings, and most of them not even related to your initial objective. It's more than just picking a color of explosion at the end like some games. The quests in the game push you towards exploring new areas. It's all one big connected map and there aren't any character levels you need to grind to unlock new areas. There's no hurry to find new areas because loot containers respawn with every new raid. You may want to choose to hang around areas to find new weapons and armor maybe, but it's not a requirement to progress.

Looting is very streamlined. Most things you can find can be scanned and printed (functionally bought) later at the base, meaning you're encouraged to use whatever you have without fear of losing hours of progress upon death. There's no arbitrary crafting system requiring you to grind for scrap metal or bits of leather; you just have a few fabricks (currencies) that can be found during exploration or from recycling anything that can be printed. Since pretty much anything that isn't a key/unique item can be recycled into fabricks, it means anything you find has value. For example, finding a cheap handgun has value behind it because you can recycle it at the base and print a more preferred weapon and/or ammo for another weapon, or saved for some character upgrades.

While there aren't character levels, there are character upgrades. These usually consist of a lot of the three common fabricks, and some of the two rarer ones that are most commonly quest rewards. These upgrades can be as basic as health and stamina increases to inventory space increases and the ability to see better in the dark. These are expensive and MAY lead to wanting to grind, but they aren't mandatory to do well in the game.

For some quick unsorted negatives: the inventory is very small and is prone to fill up in about 5 minutes if you're just doing some quick scavenging. It takes 10 minutes for the monorail to arrive. If you're out of inventory space or you don't have confidence you can explore safely anymore, you'll have to wait a while until the monorail arrives for extraction. There are some locations that allow for instant extraction, but some require an item to do so. Armor mitigates damage based on type, and armor has a percent chance to proc the reduction per damage type. This means there's a chance that damage taken can still do massive damage even while wearing armor. There is a delay for the flashlight turning on. Weapon stats are manually recorded by your own observation.

TL;DR Streamlined extraction shooter where every item is worth picking up in some way, where death is only a minor setback the longer you play. Anything you find can be repurchased after being scanned. Items can be recycled into usable currencies to buy items and upgrades from the base. There is no crafting system. You can explore anywhere on the map if you feel like it. There are shortcuts that can be unlocked but there are no real progression roadblocks, except for one important area.\t\t\t\t\t

Lemme tell ya more about it, my dear reader:
Awesome weapon variety, many enemies, fun bosses, loot is plentiful and scratches the lootgoblin itch, very pleasant difficulty curve that is challenging but fair, as you basically only die when you screw up. All my death were enraging, yes, but once I had calmed down to think about why I died, I always found it to have been stupidity on my side.

Also, hella addicting. Definitely the most fun game Ive played all year.

Lets go through the checklist of everything:

Pros:
- Very easy on your PC, can probs play it with a literal potato hooked up to a power outlet.
- Weapon variety is amazing, many ways to play and survive a raid.
- Gadget variety reinforces above point, as every raid, you can employ wildly varying tactics, from speedrunning by focusing on gadgets that improve movement and surviveability, to literally bullying and stunlocking enemies.
- Many Bosses, all with a different moveset you can either learn, or you can always try to overpower the boss with help of good weapons, healing items, etc.
- Difficult yet fair, and very very rewarding. Caught myself occassionally grinning when returning to the base with my loot.
- NPCs are interesting, Lore is interesting
- Every environment feels handcrafted, and along with the story being told, and environmental storytelling, it displays a super interesting world you can immerse yourself in.

Meh:

- Some bugs definitely still exist, but, Dev is super duper active, and quick to respond. Sometimes in the very same hour that the bug has been reported on discord, if its something critical.
- Controls can be a little clunky at times, but are easy to learn, give it an hour and you stop noticing it.

Cons:
- The Music is the one thing I would not give pluspoints for. Its not bad, not at all, but it can be buggy at times (music is known to bug out for one bossfight and just not play) and its also not as impactful as I hoped it to be. To clarify, I think the environments and the rest of the game overpower the music. There for example is a temple level, which would have really benefitted from music that is impactful, holy, yet corrupted. This of course is very much personal taste, but still.
- This once again is personal opinion, but I found it quite dissapointing that many cool weapons dropped only after I defeated the final boss. TO BE FAIR, I was quite unlucky with my weapon drops, and other people will have a very different experience.


Highlight:
Most active dev I have seen in recent times, heck, a few days back they pushed three whole updates in one day.

Rating:
9,7 outta 10
Its not quite perfect yet, but, its the closest to pure, addicting fun, which I had all year. And its frigging EARLY ACCESS.

In conclusion:
Give this game a chance, I did too, even though I usually dislike sidescrollers.
The game is still quite unnoticed for the sheer quality it shows, and, you can absolutely tell it is a labor of love.

You're really vulnerable if you don't keep ontop of enemies. There's a variety which casuse you to approach them a bit differently.

There's one really charming aspect to the game that I didn't realize was there at first. But none of the guns have stats, you have to set those yourself. Setting them doesn't actually change their stats. It's like filling out a notebook on their details. And it's just such a quirky charming system. You have some ballistic gel at the base, and can mess around with your guns there to figure out your own method for ranking their stats.\t\t\t\t\t

I cannot even begin to recommend this game enough - everything from the gunplay to the writing and level design oozes polish and passion from the developer. The map is huge, winding, and an absolute joy to explore. Gunplay is weighty and impactful, and the resource management and damage mechanics are dialed in just right. Also, this is a full, honest to god Video Game made in CONSTRUCT 3 - a cursed and vile beast that Bending Boy has somehow wrenched into the shape of an amazing video game. Absolutely psychopathic in the best way possible. I would buy the game three more times if I could.

This is easily a 50-80 hour game if you are looking to 100% it, well worth the money and time. I finally got 1 ending after 30 hours of gameplay and it was just 1 of several endings. The game is packed full of content and the dev is very friendly and responsive.

Gameplay and Progression:
0. The controls are slightly awkward at the start but become natural and responsive once you get used to it. Shouldn't be an issue if you are used to side-scrollers or top down shooters.
1. The game is hard but fair; pretty much all challenges can be overcome with enough prep and understanding of the tools delivered to you.
2. At the bare minimum, if you can shoot it, you can defeat it through sheer volume of firepower, and there are a lot of options for the player in terms of delivering said firepower.
3. The upgrades and progression feel meaningful even if some grinding is required. Some upgrades can mean the difference between resisting one extra hit or death.
4. Death is punishing since you lose everything you bring into the raid but not crippling as you can always re-visit lower difficulty areas to get some quick gear back.
5. The game highly rewards exploration but may get confusing at times with all the different corridors and rooms, the map is otherwise quite easy to learn once you been through the area a couple of times. There are subtle indicators which can guide you in the right direction too, but it is not so blatantly in-your-face and rewards the observant player.

Technical:
1. There are some bugs but are very quickly fixed, the dev is very responsive to suggestions and bug reports in their discord server.
2. I only experienced one odd crash where there was a bugged amount of enemies spawning that it caused massive frame drops and audio to cut out before crashing but otherwise no crashes in nearly 30 hours of gameplay.
3. Sound design is good and you can identify where and what type of dangers exist before you see it a most of the times. Some items and enemies can be a bit loud and annoying (i.e., maintenance drone gadget), but overall nothing game-breaking.

The mechanics are tactile, the systems are novel but intuitive (weapon grading in particular is the coolest thing ever), the tension is visceral, the environment design is inspired, the character and enemy design is charming (in like a freaky way), the ambiance is divine, and the music is sparse, tasteful, and expertly deployed. It's peak I'm afraid.

\n\t\t\t\t\tThis is an 'early access' game in the same sense that it's a wonderfully baked game with several different fully fleshed out endings (more than many), with more planned to come.

Phenomenal pixel art, a wonderful 'explore and learn-via-trial' exercise in memory/association, and in using tools to map out the place from permanent (ish) spraypaint [removable] to markers that last several attempts. Each attempt called a 'raid', the depth of this game is FAR beyond what's first experienced early on (i.e. there's more than 6+ bosses, an assortment of enemies including unconventional ones), and the dev is focused on QoL and community feedback!

It's a gem in the sand given the times now. I just wish we had a notebook or something to help ourselves than visual markers alone!

I also ran into a bug, reported it and got a response from the dev within an hour and roughly 12 hours later there was a fix implemented that resolved my issue. Big points for not forcing me to join a Discord to report my issue.
I can't say the dev will always be hyper vigilant and responsive in future, but the care shown near the EA release is huge. I wish them all the best~

There's an incredible amount of content on offer already, which is why it's such an easy purchase.

I can say with certainty that the dev is extremely passionate about this game. Every update, and bug fix is meticulous and really helps the game shine through. After nearly 90 hours of playing this game I can see the love and dedication in every pixel. The game is hard and it forces you to take your time and think about your next action carefully, and you are punished for taking enemies lightly. However It is your fault if you die and I appreciate that so much in a game made in this generation.

I can recommend the game for what it is. A very difficult yet rewarding side scrolling survival horror extraction shooter. It is exactly as it is described however there are some caveats you will have to overcome if you want to actually enjoy the game.
The difficulty is brutal. Being injured in the game can prevent you from running, jumping and dodge rolling as well as cause you to slowly bleed out. There are items that can heal you but that is an other problem.
The controls are very methodical and if I were being honest, unintuitive. This adds to the difficulty. Navigating the menu requires a great deal of time at first and I imagine anyone that sees the gameplay will be immediately turned off by it because it does not pause the game.
All in all. The game IS good but it will only appeal to a small niche. I will continue playing it because everything about it is fascinating and alluring but it feels like a marriage.\t\t\t\t\t
