Zenonia is an amazing game which had defined my childhood. It is one of those games which leaves an everlasting nostalgic effect. This alongside the Inotia series back on mobile kept me hooked for hours. I'm just glad that it had been brought to PC.
The story is simple, but makes sense and doesn't feel like an exam to understand. It's your typical "chosen one meant to save the world" kind of story but characters have personality and throw a billion sidequests at you while the world is in chaos, some being a bit hilarious with that added comedic relief. I would highly recommend anyone with the love of RPG games to try this one out, even if you aren't a fan of older RPGs.

I used to really enjoy Zenonia on mobile, and nostalgia is probably doing a lot of the heavy lifting here. Still, it’s nice to play it again. The controls feel almost exactly like I remember them. They’re a bit slow and stiff, but that doesn’t really bother me. If anything, it just makes it feel more like the old game.
What does bother me is how rough the port currently feels.
Very shortly after starting the game, you’re basically thrown a 16-page guide explaining a bunch of different systems, including things you won’t even need for quite a while. It feels like information that should have been introduced naturally while playing instead of being dumped on you all at once.
Some parts of the UI are also surprisingly unclear. The game tells you when you need to eat, but as far as I can tell there’s no clear way to see how hungry you actually are. Food has different hunger values, which makes that even stranger, because I have no idea whether I need an item that restores 10 hunger or 50.
Achievements also seem pretty buggy. I’ve already had achievements show their requirement as completed, for example 20/20, while still not allowing me to actually complete or claim them. The game also tells you that an Achievement Store has been unlocked, but either it doesn’t exist yet or it simply doesn’t open.
So even after only an hour, the game already feels noticeably buggy and not polished enough.
I’m still enjoying being able to play Zenonia again, though, and I do intend to keep going and probably try to finish it. Whether the nostalgia will be enough to carry it if these bugs keep getting in the way is something I’ll have to find out.
I also really hope this release does well enough for Zenonia 2 and 3 to eventually get the same treatment. I’d definitely like to see those return as well.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tAs someone who has now 100% completed this game, I've some thoughts on this game I loved to play back in my early teens on my phone.
To begin with, I really do like this game, and definitely enjoyed my time playing this game overall. I still like the combat, the music, and the general look of the game as I did all those years ago. The Game Speed setting is a godsend and is easily the best modern feature of this release in my opinion. I'm super glad to see the series isn't forgotten and got a modern release.
Unfortunately, steam works with a "Recommend" rating system, so as much as I personally liked the game, and while I do think this is a nostalgia-driven title that I can recommend to existing fans of the series, I don't think I can recommend it to a general audience in its current state. Time has moved on since the original release in 2009-2010, and some parts of this game - whether faithful to the original or not - make the experience more tedious than necessary.
Firstly, I almost lost a 4-5 hour save because I encountered a 0HP soft lock bug. Thankfully, I discovered a workaround, and have made a steam guide to help anyone else suffering from it. I'm pretty surprised such a serious bug exist post-release, and this one has yet to be patched as of the date of this review.
The end-game weapon drops are completely daft: The highest levelled non-boss enemy in the final dungeon is 78, yet they strictly drop level 94-99 equipment! I can guarantee no player will be anywhere near that level when they reach this point of the game. The weapon, armour, and accessory drops from enemies in the majority of this dungeon will be completely unusable dead-space to players picking them up. This severely impedes the player's ability to continue grinding without leaving the dungeon, as the drops don't properly correspond to their level, meaning they can't replace the diminishing equipment they are using to grind in the first place with something stronger and more level-appropriate.
The player is either forced to make do with whatever equipment they have on hand, or leave the dungeon to buy more suitable equipment and suffer making their way back through it to where they left. In most cases, what you take into this final dungeon is typically what you'll be using to fight the final boss.
This could have been a whole lot worse of an issue if not for the Game Speed setting introduced in this release, so props to the team for including that.
There are some crazy level spikes on enemies throughout the game which is roughly how how I remember the original being, but maybe because I'm older now I'm less tolerant of this level of grinding. It is expected that the player grinds for some time in this game before they can reasonably compete with the dungeons and their bosses, but this ranges between moderately fun to downright a chore depending on the class, weapon attributes (Holy ATK MVP), and skills (Meteor MVP) you have available (so it's very inconsistent). This is most notorious in the last dungeon: the Valley of Despair . Enemies are suddenly 10+ levels higher than you. Grinding is considerably harder for classes that don't have AoE skills that can kill multiple enemies in one go.
Grinding past a certain level (I'd say around 82, depending on class) can be overkill for the final boss and lacks real purpose beyond it (no secret boss to fight nor achievements for reaching max level). With the limited EXP boost item and the Warrior class Meteor screen AoE skill, it took me a fair amount time just to get to level 80, and found levelling up had REALLY slowed down after that.
Honestly I think the grinding wouldn't be as problematic if the limited EXP Boost item was less restricted. You can only afford about MAX 4 of them in one save if you've got Achievement Points equal to around 85% of the game's achievements, and because it's an in-game time-based consumable, the big AoE hitting classes like Warrior are going to get the most out of it versus limited range classes and skill attacks.
The "Hard mode" that is offered to you after completing the game gives little to no context in-game about what it offers. I've learned in the Discord that besides enemies being "harder", rarer weapon drops are more common from enemies, which is probably only useful if you're pursuing the "Unknown Habits" achievement. Again, there's no achievement for completing Hard mode, so there's little incentive surrounding it beyond bragging rights.

I'm surprised there are no achievements for completing all side-quests. They definitely show more of the charm of the characters in the world, which is a plus, given the relatively light depth of the main story. The incentive to do the side quests is largely lost when you can complete a run without doing most of them in the first place, which I'm guilty of doing in my second run. Given that almost all of them are hunt/fetch quests, it does get rather repetitive.
This game definitely could use better difficulty and level scaling/balancing, another comb over with dialogue translation accuracy to tighten the story, and another round of bug squashing before I could recommend it to a more general audience. But for those that grew up with this game and it's quirks, you'll be pleased enough with what you play here - and I do sincerely hope that the rest of the series can see the light of day once more, just as this title has.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
\n\n\t\t\t\tTo begin with, I really do like this game, and definitely enjoyed my time playing this game overall. I still like the combat, the music, and the general look of the game as I did all those years ago. The Game Speed setting is a godsend and is easily the best modern feature of this release in my opinion. I'm super glad to see the series isn't forgotten and got a modern release.
Unfortunately, steam works with a "Recommend" rating system, so as much as I personally liked the game, and while I do think this is a nostalgia-driven title that I can recommend to existing fans of the series, I don't think I can recommend it to a general audience in its current state. Time has moved on since the original release in 2009-2010, and some parts of this game - whether faithful to the original or not - make the experience more tedious than necessary.
Cutting the ride short
Firstly, I almost lost a 4-5 hour save because I encountered a 0HP soft lock bug. Thankfully, I discovered a workaround, and have made a steam guide to help anyone else suffering from it. I'm pretty surprised such a serious bug exist post-release, and this one has yet to be patched as of the date of this review.
"What am I supposed to do with this?"
The end-game weapon drops are completely daft: The highest levelled non-boss enemy in the final dungeon is 78, yet they strictly drop level 94-99 equipment! I can guarantee no player will be anywhere near that level when they reach this point of the game. The weapon, armour, and accessory drops from enemies in the majority of this dungeon will be completely unusable dead-space to players picking them up. This severely impedes the player's ability to continue grinding without leaving the dungeon, as the drops don't properly correspond to their level, meaning they can't replace the diminishing equipment they are using to grind in the first place with something stronger and more level-appropriate.
The player is either forced to make do with whatever equipment they have on hand, or leave the dungeon to buy more suitable equipment and suffer making their way back through it to where they left. In most cases, what you take into this final dungeon is typically what you'll be using to fight the final boss.
The Grind
This could have been a whole lot worse of an issue if not for the Game Speed setting introduced in this release, so props to the team for including that.
There are some crazy level spikes on enemies throughout the game which is roughly how how I remember the original being, but maybe because I'm older now I'm less tolerant of this level of grinding. It is expected that the player grinds for some time in this game before they can reasonably compete with the dungeons and their bosses, but this ranges between moderately fun to downright a chore depending on the class, weapon attributes (Holy ATK MVP), and skills (Meteor MVP) you have available (so it's very inconsistent). This is most notorious in the last dungeon: the Valley of Despair . Enemies are suddenly 10+ levels higher than you. Grinding is considerably harder for classes that don't have AoE skills that can kill multiple enemies in one go.
Grinding past a certain level (I'd say around 82, depending on class) can be overkill for the final boss and lacks real purpose beyond it (no secret boss to fight nor achievements for reaching max level). With the limited EXP boost item and the Warrior class Meteor screen AoE skill, it took me a fair amount time just to get to level 80, and found levelling up had REALLY slowed down after that.
Honestly I think the grinding wouldn't be as problematic if the limited EXP Boost item was less restricted. You can only afford about MAX 4 of them in one save if you've got Achievement Points equal to around 85% of the game's achievements, and because it's an in-game time-based consumable, the big AoE hitting classes like Warrior are going to get the most out of it versus limited range classes and skill attacks.
"...and all I got was this lousy mode"
The "Hard mode" that is offered to you after completing the game gives little to no context in-game about what it offers. I've learned in the Discord that besides enemies being "harder", rarer weapon drops are more common from enemies, which is probably only useful if you're pursuing the "Unknown Habits" achievement. Again, there's no achievement for completing Hard mode, so there's little incentive surrounding it beyond bragging rights.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tZenonia 1 still has that nostalgic charm I remember, and playing through the story again really brought back a lot of memories. I’m genuinely happy to see this game finally make its way to PC.
For anyone who never played the original Zenonia, though, be warned: the gameplay can be pretty difficult at times. It definitely feels like an older mobile RPG in that regard, so don’t expect everything to be a breeze.
There are also some issues with the dialogue and quests. Sometimes NPCs are referred to with the wrong gender, like a male NPC being called “she” or a female NPC being called “he.” I noticed this mostly in side quests, but it occasionally happens in the main story too. It only bothered me a little, but the translation/dialogue could definitely use some polishing. I’m not sure if it’s too late for these issues to be fixed, but I hope they’ll look into them and keep an eye out for similar issues in future games.
Despite those issues, I’ve really enjoyed coming back to Zenonia. The nostalgia, story, and old-school charm are still here, and I’m glad a piece of my childhood is playable on PC now.

I hope Gamevil, now known as Com2us, can bring back the entire Zenonia series (Zenonia 1–5), along with the other series like Inotia 1–4. I know Inotia 4 already released on Steam in 2025 before, but it feels a bit “clunky” and not quite like it used to be imo, so hopefully they can fix it up. Looking forward to the upcoming series, especially Zenonia series. uWu ❤️
