\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tNormally, I don’t really do Steam reviews. Most, if not all the games I have played, I always had a tendency to enjoy, even with any faults I may have come across during gameplay, and wouldn’t warrant an entire review.
Touhou Brawl is what ended up breaking this silence.
Before playing, I initially was hyped for the game. The idea of a Touhou-themed action-roguelike à la The Binding of Issac seemed like a neat concept. And with multiplayer included, it seemed like a fun way to get friends alongside you and beat Touhou bosses.
But as I bought and played the game, getting to the end of an entire run as Cirno, I realized this game was riddled with problems.
One of the problems I had when I was playing through the game was how it didn’t really feel like a Touhou game. The locations felt fine, there were enough recognizable locations from the Touhou franchise that can give this game a pass, yet they made the locations not feel “alive” in a sense. They felt more like ever-repeated room layouts with different skins so they would count as separate locations.
Additionally, aside from the playable characters / bosses, the only semblance of Touhou characters in terms of enemies were only in the forms of basic fairies and The Three Fairies of Light as minibosses. Every other form of enemy felt generic, such as wraiths, golems, bombs, pigs(?), etc., and didn’t belong in Gensokyo. I know the main reason in terms of the plot was that these enemies came through from unknown rifts, but that doesn’t really help when they’re also grouped up with pre-established Touhou enemies.
Another gripe I had with this game was with the use of Generative AI through the game. I initially gave the benefit of a doubt as the disclosure stated that “Generative AI technology is used in a supplementary capacity” and “any such assets are replaced through our production pipeline by our art and development teams.” Yet despite this, AI still plagues the game. Any assets aside from the 3D models, primarily character stills, items, even the game’s logo still feel like they’re AI generated. It doesn’t help that because of the amount of AI used, the game doesn’t have a coherent style.
In terms of gameplay, the game felt too generic, with nothing really new to differentiate the game or make it stand out compared to other action roguelikes. I’ve initially read through other reviews in regards to the balance, and began playing after the balance changes, but now ( at least in my experience ), the game felt too unbalanced but in the player’s favor, and it overall made the game feel more like a slough to play through with no challenge.

Not a bad concept, and I did go in wanting to give this game a good review, but I can't.
To cut it short, this is more like an arena fighter/moba. This isn't a bad concept, I actually do like these genres, the issues comes in with multiple areas. Starting off with the clearest problem, the game offers no way to improve over time. Essentially, you're stuck.
This can be done, but it requires a game that is perfectly balanced, this game is anything but that. One of the issue is what clashes directly with this method, your movements are slow, sluggish. This makes it terrible to maneuver around. I am someone who can get used to these things pretty fast, and I did.
This would have been fine, if not for the balance. As for that now? Naturally, these games feature bullet hells, and this is fine. However, due to the slow movements, and the lack of a proper hit box, you're gonna get hit a lot.
Which brings things into the next area, infrequent healing. I went like two runs before I even got a heal, then randomly the third I got it more consistently. Sometimes before a boss fight, sometimes not. This means, your run can fail just like that.
Bosses are far faster, let alone not only they themselves have a larger hit range, they move around the entire field as an attack, while the projectiles, etc. With no way to improve, infrequent healing, lack of a proper hit box, etc. These are just terribly designed.
On top of this, while the Touhou franchise is known for its multi-phases, the problem here. Is because the game is so unbalanced, it just doesn't work.
When you're wiped out, you don't even carry over any of the currencies, you're effectively stuck. It is like, the concept for the game isn't bad, the execution though, is horrendous.
Also, to answer how do I know all of this despite the short play time. I found the value for life in Cheat Engine and locked it. I wanted to get a good feel for the game before I wrote the review, so I tested everything.
While the game offers temporary enhancements through chests, after a boss fight, etc. It does not come even close to making the game balanced, it is insanely lopsided.
Oh yeah, there are mimics, that is fine and all. Too bad you always have to open it manually first, you can't just hit it. This creates another problem, a high chance of you getting hit, in an already limited healing situation. It is like, I can interpret the whole map, and even though I can see it all coming. The movements is what screws you over if anything.
All in all, I just can't recommend this game. Sorry, I really did wanna like it, but it is just bad. I rarely write negative reviews, and this wasn't one I wanted to do so, but I have to be honest from what I experienced.

I saw the patches as of 7/31
While I won't change this review immediately, I'll wait to see what sort of patches are done. Then I'll give it another chance, as I said. I do want to like this game. The irony is that what was patched were actual issues I faced, so, I'll wait for now. The game did appeared balanced for Co-oP, but not so for Single play. I'll give it a few weeks, then jump back on to see what improvements are there.
So for now, I will favorite the game so I don't forget to revisit it.

I decided to do an updated review, the previous one will be kept so you can track the changes. There are a ton, and this is towards many QoL changes, especially balance. I will cover the most important as to not drag it out.
1. Hit box
--> Before this was an issue, the hit box is far better in this version of the game.
2. Much better pattern for Single Play.
--> The patterns were a real problem, a lot was adjusted to make it reasonable to evade, and keep things flowing smoothly.
3. Much Better Damage Adjustments.
--> Before, damage was extremely high. Now, it is more fitted per mode from what I can tell for Single Play.
4. Much Smoother movements.
--> This was a critical issue before. Now the movements is more smooth, and it doesn't feel like I am fighting the commands. Dashes were improved as well, and combine that with the extended dash and speed. This was an enormous upgrade.
While the base movement is still a bit slow, this is a much better version, and one I can more safely recommend.
5. Mimics.
--> These got a slight shake, and this wouldn't mean anything if they didn't adjust movements. This makes it easier to evade the mimics.
6. Newly added shops.
--> This means you can get an actual boost of some kind before the run.
7. From what I can tell, wipe out or not, and the currency should carry over.
8. Final Boss Pattern.
--> Looks to have been adjusted as well, while chaotic, it can be interpreted quite well now.
9. A heal before every boss fight. Forgot to add in this improvement. 8/2/26

10. You can use the carried over points to upgrade the Pond for permanent boosts.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThis game is very fun to play along with a satisfying enjoyable gameplay loop. But there are a lot of bugs which is as expected for a game when it first releases. These are the frequent bugs that i have been experiencing.
Bug 1: Chests sometimes spawns in walls or behind them which makes it almost unreachable.
Bug 2: when i hook over to the boss i get thrown into walls blocking me off and i get rapped, unable to hook back or to the boss area.
Bug 3: sometimes when i pick cards that add extra bullets they don't get applied. For example: if I select the missile card there is a chance it will bug and won't appear the whole game.
And now here are a few complaints i have for this game.
Complaint 1: For a bullet hell game you have a lack of fast speeds besides dash which is not only hard to control but doesn't apply a very good boost to it.
Complaint 2: I feel the hurtboxes for your characters are too big which makes it hard to dodge and squeeze through bullets.
Complaint 3: Bosses have way more freedom and speed than we do which makes killing them extremely difficult and almost unfair unless you get lucky enough to get op cards.

There are some massive issues while playing on the Deck & Machine, but my main PC had almost no problems running this game. It's a fun dungeon arena bullet hell. I didn't really like the volleyball minigame because the controls are pretty bad in my opinion, just like the other Touhou Volleyball game from the same developer.

In my second run, the warp gate to the final boss/zone broke, giving me a loading screen but then booting me back to where I was standing. As neither scenario had any enemies around to kill me, I had to manually abort my run both times, forfeiting all the coins(which are required for metaprogression) I had obtained in the process.
I also found that certain power-ups had been left entirely untranslated. Other power-ups have incomplete descriptions, and some don't seem to work at all.
As for more personal gripes, the walls blinking out of existence when you get close to ensure you can see where your character is would be a nice QoL feature, but it happens CONSTANTLY and makes the game unpleasant to look at. Certain level assets are tossed around haphazardly with little regard for the actual layout of the levels, resulting in things like chests and shrines being half-buried in walls or boulders.
