\n\t\t\t\t\tI love every aspect of this game. The game loop is very fun and satisfying, building on the foundation of similar "friend slop" games that have come before it such as REPO.

The reason I am giving this game a negative review is that it is not complete, and they are representing it as a complete game. As it stands, you get to a certain quest in the game, and the quests just stop, even though there is clearly a 3rd floor to the game that has yet to be unlocked by the player.

There is also the issue of the very small amount of unlockable items in the game. I believe it stands at 35 total, which you will achieve in about 5 hours of competent gameplay. They also said they added "legendary" gatchas, but they are just the 3 small robots you can find in levels, which was very disappointing to see.

In the end, I love this game, and if they actually follow through and complete the game, I will change this review. Currently I think it is deceptive to represent this as a full game.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI’ve been loving GRAIN ROT so far, especially the whole idea of rebuilding the Main Outpost and slowly bringing the place back to life.

One of my favorite parts of the game is how upgrading different rooms actually gives you permanent benefits like more health, speed, strength, etc. It makes the Outpost feel important instead of just being a place you stand around between runs.

Because of that, I think it would be really cool if that rebuilding idea eventually expanded outside of the Main Outpost itself.

Instead of only adding more rooms onto the original building, maybe there could be a second or even third abandoned building somewhere out in the surrounding area that you can actually discover.

You could find one in really bad condition, completely dirty, broken down, and maybe partially overrun. Then over time you could clean it out, repair it, bring materials to it, and slowly restore the whole building.

Each new building could have its own rooms to upgrade just like the Main Outpost does now, with different permanent bonuses or useful features.

I think it would make progression feel really satisfying because instead of only watching one building improve, you’d slowly see the entire area around you start coming back to life.

You could start with just the Main Outpost, and after a lot of progression eventually have multiple restored buildings, more NPCs living around the area, lights turning on, people walking around, and the place slowly feeling like an actual small settlement again.

I also think more NPCs would be really cool.

Since the game already has the idea of survivors and rebuilding, it would be awesome if you could rescue more people over time and actually see them living around the Outpost and the other restored buildings.

They wouldn’t even all need some massive gameplay purpose.

Some could just walk around, sit down, talk to each other, work on things, use the rooms you’ve built, or make the area feel more populated.

Others could maybe have small uses, give little quests, help with certain rooms, or just have dialogue.

I really like the idea of the world above ground slowly becoming more alive because of everything you’ve done.

Then for something much later in progression, I think it would be really cool if there was a fourth building that was much farther away and more hidden.

Maybe it could be some kind of large abandoned building, mansion, facility, warehouse, or something else that looks important but is difficult to find.

I actually think it would be better if the game didn’t immediately put a giant marker on it.

Maybe players notice an old path, broken lights, strange power lines, footprints, a distant structure, or something else that makes them curious enough to go explore.

You eventually find this huge abandoned place and, just like the other buildings, you have to clean it out and slowly restore it.

But this building would have something special inside:

Another elevator.

I think having a second elevator could be really interesting if it wasn’t simply a harder version of the current one.

It could lead to a different underground area with its own materials, blueprints, enemies, and progression.

Right now, a lot of what you bring back is focused around wood and normal building materials, so maybe this second underground area could introduce things like:

Metal scrap
Machine parts
Wire
Gears
Metal plates
Mechanical components
Old electronics
Industrial parts
Rare alloys
Other strange materials

Then those materials could be used for an entirely different group of blueprints.

The normal elevator could still be where you get most of the normal wood, furniture, and standard building materials, while the hidden elevator gives you more industrial or mechanical materials.

That way the second elevator actually has its own reason to exist instead of just being “normal elevator but enemies have more health.”

It could also have completely different types of blueprints.

Maybe normal blueprints are mostly focused on wooden furniture, restoration, and normal Outpost upgrades, while blueprints from the hidden elevator are more mechanical or industrial.

Things like powered equipment, machines, generators, metal furniture, reinforced structures, new tools, lighting systems, storage equipment, or other strange technology.

Some late-game blueprints could even require materials from BOTH elevators.

For example, you might need normal wood and building materials from the original elevator, but also metal scrap and mechanical parts from the hidden one.

That would keep both areas useful even after you unlock the second elevator.

The second elevator could also be more dangerous and have higher rewards.

Maybe some floors have different multipliers or modifiers, like:

Higher loot amount
Higher material quality
More dangerous enemies
Faster enemies
More darkness
Stronger Corrupted
More valuable scrap
Rare NPCs to rescue
Special environmental hazards

You could potentially have runs where the rewards are something like 2x or 3x normal, but the enemies or other dangers are also much worse.

I think that would make it feel more like a high-risk, high-reward area instead of something that completely replaces the normal elevator.

Maybe the elevator itself could even be broken when you first discover the building.

You find it, realize what it is, but you can’t actually use it yet.

Then restoring that building becomes a major long-term goal.

You repair different parts of the building, restore power, find the parts needed for the elevator, and eventually get it working.

That moment where the second elevator finally turns on could feel like a huge progression milestone.

The materials from that elevator could also have different levels as you go deeper.

For example:

Scrap Metal
Better Mechanical Parts
Reinforced Metal
Rare Components
Advanced Materials

That could create another progression path without simply making the current room upgrades go infinitely higher.

Most importantly though, I wouldn’t want any of this to mess with the existing story or lore.

I know the game already has its own story and I don’t want to suggest where the developers should take it or say how the lore should continue.

I mostly just love the feeling of rebuilding.

The idea I really like is that you start in this mostly broken and empty place, and through everything you do underground, you slowly start rebuilding life above ground.

The Main Outpost becomes restored.

Then another building comes back.

Then another.

More NPCs start living around you.

More lights turn on.

More rooms become usable.

The area becomes safer and more populated.

And eventually you look around and realize that this place that started completely broken now actually feels alive again.

I think that would fit the existing progression system really well because it’s basically taking something the game already does amazingly and letting it grow outward into the surrounding world.

And absolutely no pressure to the devs!

I know coding, designing new areas, making models, balancing progression, adding NPCs, creating new materials, making new blueprints, and everything else that goes into game development can take months or even longer, especially with a smaller team.

So I’m definitely not trying to be like “ADD ALL OF THIS NOW!!” 😭

These are just ideas and suggestions I thought would be really cool to see someday.

Take all the time you need, and even if none of this ever gets added, the game is already absolutely amazing. I’ve been loving it so far.

And what's worse is that at the time of the release there was nothing anywhere showing that the full content wasnt in the game. Played for several hours and then had to go to the discord to figure out why I couldnt unlock certain parts of the base and why I couldnt progress the story line. It wasnt until a week after the release that a roadmap was released. Super shady. Random people that are not on your friends list can join your game at any time, break all of your ♥♥♥♥ in all of your rooms, steal all of the scrap, and then spend it to upgrade their items they've bought from the store and then quit, leaving you with nothing.

Until private lobbies are a thing, this game is NOT recommended.

I honestly expected something a bit half baked and maybe something like a mediocre friendslop, however I was pleasently surprised by how good this game is.

The gameplayloop basically consists of you going down an eleveator into the "deep layers" where you can break stuff for scraps or sell stuff for money. You need scrap to build stuff and money to buy weapons, healing or other utility things.

The idea is that you renovate your outpost, which you can do by crafting furniture and decor by using the scrap you collected in the deep layers. You can make astoundingly beautiful rooms like that. Furthermore I was worried that the building is like the only insentive to go down, and well it kind of is, but when you renovate a room, it gets upgraded, which in turn also let's you buy rarer stuff from the shop, upgrades your health, stamina, stamina regenartionc, attack power etc. It's a really cool and rewarding concept.

On top of all that you can get very creative in the deep layers. There are some enemies, which I think are very cool designed and all work differently (granted there could be more of the to give a better variety). You can run away, kill them OR also build some stuff in their way to slow them down. If they do manage to kill you, you can find a new, smaller body that has a special ability to continue your run. You can also do this while you are still alive, by switching your body using your spark (which I like to do when I don't have a good weapon yet). There are many ways to play this game. In addition the level design has to be one of the best I haver ever seen in such a similair game. It is incredibly varied, with dangerous traps and also hidden passages (sometimes in the floor, sometimes a barred off hallway or even in the ceiling, a hidden stash of money. I believe there are like 3-4 different biomes (don't quote me on that, I think I have just experienced those, if there are more, sorry !) and they look amazing really. At last I really like the quests we get. We have a charming robot with us in the outpost, who gives us quests, like find a key or a companion of his in the deep layers, or get rid of the rot in the second floor. Funnily enough you meet some other characters along the way, who are incredibly charming.

What they should definietly improve upon, apart from the enemy variety, there are in my opinion, not enough buildable items. You can build shelfs, but barely have anything to stock them up with. Its hard for me to come up with layouts of a room that don't all look the exact same cause there just isn't that much variety yet.

Aside from these two points there is not really much to complain about tbh. This game is indrecibly polished with a lot of fun and variety to play this for hours on end. If they manage to imporve the two things I mentioned, I think it could be even better !\t\t\t\t\t

My progress stays even if I happen to die in the Deeper Layers, and the progress actually rewards you which is very refreshing. Characters explaining you the world and what to do, new characters appearing over time, when you progress, new floors, cool mechanics (the idea is old, sure - go down to the basement, gather loot, stay alive, BUT! The upgrades mechanic is awesome!
Have to be freaking interior decorator to properly upgrade! (the numbers grow if you put proper items close together and if it's a bunch of crp than the upgrade meter goes down) - cool mechanic, something new and unusual + THE PROGRESS SAVES!!!! You don't lose your progress and your room upgrades if you die. that's cool! The spark mechanic is fun as hell, but I wish you had a bit more time, sometimes it's very hard to find a new body for the spark.
The challenge level is cool! Enemies are tough, but still beatable if you're clever! :) USE YOUR ENVIRONMENT!

\n\t\t\t\t\tLet me start by saying that $9 USD is a very fair price for what's being offered. You could have done so much more, Ultimately this game is a kiddie pool version of what should have been. I'll list a few gripes below.

1. Body swapping is awesome- why did you only allow us to swap to smaller bodies with 1/3 the base HP of a normal guy?
2. Why cant we access the full building, did you release the game as "finished" so you wouldn't be under any obligation to complete it... or sell it to us as DLC?
3. Enemy variety and rot mechanics. I think the dev team may have crossed wires here, rot should play a much bigger role in how it affects enemies and you the player. Right now its just a random goop that changes animations + vomit.
4. The upgrade station is very bare, the NPC eludes to better stations but even after maxing out most rooms I don't see anything.

Ultimately I think the game is worth the buy but I cant recommend it considering its advertised as 1.0 while the game is clearly unfinished.

Please be aware if u buy the game, the story is only like 1/3 or 1/4 complete. u unlock the 2nd floor and the game just comes full stop shortly after unlocking it. The unlocks are also a bit short. And a LOT of QoL stuff is missing, good luck figuring out how to setup a room without seeing if stuff Syncs for a boost or ruins each other.

Bought on release expecting a full game, on the 12th they post a roadmap including things that should have been already in the game.
The main questline isn't complete.
They changed the graphics recently which greatly reduced how good it looks. At launch it looked great and matched the screenshots and trailers, now if you look at something like a wooden panel or metal flooring on the elevator and walk 5 yards back it ripples like water (This is with everything maxed out, friend observed the same issues)

Gameplay is rough
Find a room with 3 good items in? now you are doing laps for 5 mins since the closest thing to a cart is a tiny crate u can spawn that sends objects inside flying with a slight bump.
Gameplay pretty much devolves into pick a direction, do laps for anything blue quality and up.

VERDICT
GRAIN ROT is a game where I can clearly see the potential. I really enjoyed its gameplay loop, and the combination of exploration, resource gathering, meaningful upgrades, and base renovation made me want to keep going. The problem is that I often felt like I was playing a game that wasn't quite finished yet. There's a strong foundation here, but the current amount of content and relatively simple progression systems leave me wanting more. I think what's here is interesting enough to be worth experiencing, but the game could become significantly better if the developers continue expanding its world, enemies, upgrades, and especially the mechanics surrounding the rot and base building.
