\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI'm voting no due to my current frustration level. Cleaning the islands grant you stars, which are used to unlock new maps. The issue is the larger islands have the chance to have a quest item spawn in rock formations. This prevents you from obtaining all stars. The maps are generated each time you go to an island, so no two islands are the same. There is no way of knowing if an item is missing until you get to the end. So you spend 30 minutes to an hour single clicking trash, dirt piles, sorting recycling, etc only to find out a tree is spawned inside a rock formation. Start the map over. Next time there is a piece of trash is missing. Start the island over. Another tree is inside a rock formation. Three hours of looking for items that aren't able to be completed. They even have a sense ability to highlight what is missing, but if it's inside something else, you can't see it. Save yourself some time and play another island cleaning game until they can fix the issue.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

It's a stint of busybody cleaning and environmental change that can eke out a smile after your glazed eyes finish repetitive tasks for half an upgrade token and some pocket lint. The only upgrades that end up making an impactful difference are water consumption speed and the Gulper; a direct upgrade to the trash-collecting tool that has the suck strength of a failing iron lung. Speaking of ancient failing technology, pray you don't miss any items, because the scanner's beep hits weaker than your Grandma's 1977 heart monitor, refusing to show objects through walls and barely lighting up the items next to you. The last unlocks on the upgrade trees are just for money, which means nothing since there are barely enough cosmetic items to spend the money you make halfway through the game.

I played the demo, which took me 3 hours to complete even though it only had 1 region. The main game has 4 of them! The sounds are very satisfying, the visuals are very calming, and the gameplay is very addictive. I love picking up those bottles! Each region seems to have its own hazards that need cleaning which makes the gameplay refreshing. The recycling minigame is super fun and there are a lot of animals to help which are SUPER CUTE!!
I'm also super glad that the developer listened to feedback. My biggest complaint about the demo was not being able to save at any time. Now you can manually save your game at any time!

The main mechanics are a bit annoying to begin with. Picking up trash requires you to constantly click, you can't hold the mouse button. Same thing for the shovel, you need to constantly click, waiting for the animation to finish until the next click goes through.
You have to recycle all the trash you pick. And even if not hard, having think for a split second in which garbage can it goes, makes it very boring. Feeling very chore like. Specially as you'll need to do it constantly to empty the bag.
Levels are randomized, so you can get trash out of reach or things to clean which are under the floor. Very fun.

For anyone with any hand or wrist issues, the released game was punishing for bad hands or wrists to the point I had decided to uninstall it and move on but this new QoL feature was literally a game changer for me.
I like the game loop and concept of cleaning an island and some of the ways you need to get to things are very clever. Exploration is key as well, as some items can be hidden that you will need to advance.
Tools are upgradeable, although having it in the main menu seemed a weird choice, it is still easy enough to complete an island and ESC back a menu and choose whatever upgrades you'd like to add. I like the progression of small to large islands that become more complex and while some are not fans of the procedurally generated islands, I find that very different from other games of this genre and it was a deciding factor in purchasing it. The caveat is if you sometimes can't find something, there is no guaranteed fall back of asking other players where it might be so fair warning you could be on your own at times and I'm good with that premise.
You can Leave an island even if you don't complete it 100% and still move on to the next one. it isn't as satisfying as 100%ing it but it doesn't leave you stuck with no game progression at all, if you a have a high enough percentage of completed objectives.

There are also cute animals to save and give pets. When you are finished you get rewards and move onto other islands in the biome, before moving to other regions. There are cosmetics to unlock for your boat and skills to make your job easier. I didn't encounter any bugs, (Thanks to the devs!) and it played fine on my machine. The controls are intuitive and I appreciate that all the tools can be toggled so you don't have to keep clicking/holding resulting in hand fatigue. This is such a wonderful concept for a game and exploring the maps is honestly really fun even though they are small. I especially enjoyed the hidden areas and mini puzzles on the bigger islands. It reminded me a lot of No Pace Like Home and Fresh Start Cleaning Simulator by Chicken Launcher (nature restoration games). I had been looking for games that had similar and cozy vibes and Island Restoration was exactly what I wanted.
My only criticism is a bug where sometimes trees and I think flowers in some of the later levels would spawn inside of rocks. Trees were easy to still hit with water but in the icy world I had a flower and stump spawn inside a rock. I ended up restarting that island and it fixed the issue but itās definitely a bug that I could see upset some people.

Island Restoration is one of those games where I looked at the basic premise and thought, "Yep, I'm probably going to enjoy this."
After just under an hour and 45 minutes and two tropical islands completely restored, I'm happy to say I was right.
The premise is wonderfully straightforward. Jump into your boat, travel to an island and discover that somebody has made an absolute mess of the place. Oil spills need cleaning, enormous piles of mud need removing, statues and monuments need washing, and beaches are littered with glass bottles, cans, plastics and other rubbish.
So you get to work.
What I particularly enjoy is that you're not simply watching a percentage counter increase while performing the same action repeatedly. There are different kinds of cleaning to do, different tools to use and plenty of little things to discover as you work your way around each island.
Then there are the animals.
During my first couple of islands I found little creatures that needed rescuing, cleaning and freeing from the rubbish and materials tangled around them. I'm already somebody who gets an unreasonable amount of satisfaction from making a messy virtual environment look beautiful again, so adding animals that need my help was probably a little unfair.
Of course I'm going to rescue them.
One of the things I really enjoyed during these first two islands was simply seeing the transformation taking place around me. You arrive somewhere that looks neglected and polluted, then gradually work your way through it until the rubbish has gone, the hazards have been dealt with and the place looks like somewhere you'd actually want to visit again.
It's simple, but extremely satisfying.
I originally intended this to be a first look for De Tom Plays, and eventually stopped after around an hour and 45 minutes simply because the recording was already getting rather long. I hadn't stopped because I'd had enough. Quite the opposite ā I wanted to carry on cleaning.
I've asked the people watching whether they'd like to see me restore more of the islands on camera. Whether they do or not, I'm going back.
There are still more places to restore, more upgrades and tools for me to discover and considerably more of the game for me to experience, so I'll happily acknowledge that this isn't a review written after completing everything.
It's my experience so far.
And so far, Island Restoration has delivered pretty much exactly what I hoped it would: a relaxed, satisfying game about taking places that have been spoiled and making them beautiful again, with no need to rush while doing it.
Apparently that's all it takes to keep me happy.
Give me a boat, some cleaning equipment, a polluted island and a few little animals that need rescuing and I'll see you in several hours.

I originally intended this to be a first look for De Tom Plays, and eventually stopped after around an hour and 45 minutes simply because the recording was already getting rather long. I hadn't stopped because I'd had enough. Quite the opposite ā I wanted to carry on cleaning.
I've asked the people watching whether they'd like to see me restore more of the islands on camera. Whether they do or not, I'm going back.
There are still more places to restore, more upgrades and tools for me to discover and considerably more of the game for me to experience, so I'll happily acknowledge that this isn't a review written after completing everything.
It's my experience so far.
And so far, Island Restoration has delivered pretty much exactly what I hoped it would: a relaxed, satisfying game about taking places that have been spoiled and making them beautiful again, with no need to rush while doing it.
Apparently that's all it takes to keep me happy.
Give me a boat, some cleaning equipment, a polluted island and a few little animals that need rescuing and I'll see you in several hours.
For me, Island Restoration already earns a Tom Recommends. š~~š
