\n\t\t\t\t\tSo far it looks like the game learned a lot of lessons from the first one. I am glad, for I was worried it was going to be a broken mess. After all, a lot of the bugs in the first game are still not fixed, and there was concern on my side over the pattern continuing.

For now, it looks stable, smooth and fluid. Some needed QoL has been added, and some is still painfully missing, such as moving buildings after placing them, this is especially annoying when now extensions and expansions to them can be added, making your workyard need frequent organising.

The voice acting is pretty solid, but I turned it off, as I preffer the game more chill, however the mumbling voiceover specifically in the tutorial is not great due to that one looter that saves you, but afterwards they get more consistent and much nicer, so this is just an initial annoyance.

Crafting is smoother and more involved for the better. All the stations feel nice to operate.

Farming is a lot better too, now costing a bit of energy, but actually yielding a seed surplus, which was a major pain of the first game.

Generally, excellent, right off launch. Still however has some design ideas that need reconsidering. Such as, for the love of Old God please add a wishlist so I can keep track of what I need. I beg you.

Id like to go into more details into what QoL has been added and what is still missing, since I am fresh off fully completing GK1.

- Graveyards have decoration slots. (I completed GK1 without burying a single corpse. This one is really nice) However the graveyard still feels like a bit of an afterthought and you are much more of a factory foreman in this game.
- Shift to increase amount by 10 in crafting
- Fertiliser is pernament and not consumable
- Corpses are placed on pallets automatically (But sorting them is now a pain because you cant examine them there anymore).
- Can request many more corpses per day.

Missing:
- No accessibility option to tap to interact instead of hold. (My hand is in pain and I have to use a separate tool for this game)
- No moving buildings after they are placed (This one is genuinely really bad. Especially when dissasembly costs you resources, even when moving a building by one tile.)
- No Wishlist to mark what materials you need for expansions. (Good lord this is bad. There is a mod to fix it, and I hope it gets integrated in the main game.)

\n\t\t\t\t\tI've seen some mixed reviews for the game, so I wanted to say my piece, even if it's into the void. (FYI, this will talk about gameplay, not the story. I feel your opinion on the story of Graveyard Keeper is based HEAVILY on who you are and how tolerant you are to unskippable cutscenes. Personally, I love the story and writing, but I get like 80% of my enjoyment from the gameplay)

Graveyard Keeper was one of the best games I have ever played. I only found out about this sequel a week or so before it launched, so I went in blind. It's safe to say this game is like 20% better than the first one! (In my humble opinion, after playing up until just after the first combat section). It fixes a couple of big gripes I had with the first game. First, it links the technologies to each other more closely so you can't ignore one skill tree for half the game (like I did in the first game). Second, the addition of inspiration and separating the perks from the tech trees is great. I was skeptical about it at first, but it incentivizes players to do more than just one thing to gain skill points, and helps keep you from just jumping all the way down one tree due to the mastery requirements to do things (even though it is kind of annoying, I feel it's pushing me to experience the game more fully!). Also it'll cut out the terrible end game grind of hundreds of blue skill points to unlock the really good perks/ the issue of having to grind to get a perk I won't use JUST to unlock the thing behind it on the tree. Finally, the corpse system seems so much more managable. One body everyday, plus the rotting mechanic AND then having to farm carrots to even get bodies despite the crops never producing more seeds than you planted became a serious low point of the game for me in the first one, it was rough midgame. I'd plan my whole gameplay loop around the corpse delivery which was awful when I was trying to do the final parts of the main story and some of the DLC stuff all at once. (Love that crops give you more seeds than you plant, and that farming has become a much bigger and better part of the game)

Also, I just have to gush about all the little touches. The day wheel displaying a relevant image to that day's special task, the fish in the water, THE AMAZING VOICE ACTING, and the little outfits- it's all so charming and clearly made with love. In an era of corporate AI slop, I'm so glad to have a game like this to play.

Although I have a couple of issues with the current game. I wish the clothing did not take up an inventory slot. I would like some longer ranges for the paired workstations (like the anvil and quenching bucket), considering space is limited and you can't move already placed buildings. I feel like something about the hitboxes makes it harder for you to push logs with your character (it sounds small, but this saved me SO MUCH TIME in the first game). And I wish that the price to fill the XP bar for inspiration was either removed or lessened, (unless there's some better way to make faith later in the game than just mass) because in the first game I was always burning through faith.

TLDR: I felt it fixed a lot of major gameplay issues, but I have some small gripes which could easily be fixed with future updates/DLC.

Today I've already had a talking donkey give me corpses, I drained them of blood and fat, buried them in shabby graves, commited identity fraud, harassed the locals in my local village and slowly went insane whilst having conversations with a talking skull - then I booted up Graveyard Keeper 2, which is like the first game, only bigger in scope and has voice acting.

The first game was tedious to the point it was borderline enjoyable at times, but this one crosses into grueling territory. It's the small things, really, all of which could be easily fixed with a couple patches, most of which hover around production. My biggest gripe is with the automated/time based production, like ovens and furnaces. In the first game, you could craft huge batches of iron bars, let's say, and collect them all at once. Now, you have to collect each batch for the next one to begin; meaning, iron bars craft in batches of 2 and, if you want to make 20, you have to collect them two at a time and if you don't it will hold up the next batch from starting, and it's the same for ovens.

This brings progress to a grinding slowdown on a game that already promises to be long and drawn out. Some of the deeper mechanics they've added look interesting at a glance, but they all require tremendous time and resource investment to unlock. Quests are a bit more streamlined which allows the story to move a bit steadier than the first, but sooo many new crafting stations have been added, as well as new resources, all of which cost a ton to make and quickly demand expanded storage.

The first game had its issues, but it felt pretty straightforward in its immediate goals and progression. During my time with this one so far, it seems like every time I finish one task I just open up eight more. Like I say, they might smooth some stuff out in future patches and, if they do, I would gladly change this review.\t\t\t\t\t

But it is pretty cool, if you played the first graveyard keeper you will like this too, it feels like a more polished version and it is a story sequel. I have a feeling that you can spent many many hours in that game so I would love when a Co-Op update would come and play with friends together. Some quality of life update would be nice too, but there are mods for that already. Great game so far, you get tons of content for a few bucks.\t\t\t\t\t

Starting off, I am relieved to say that the mechanics from the previous game transferred pretty well, and the new stuff and changes are fitting in just fine, although i will admit the mastery can be a bit of a standstill if you neglect the challenges.

The city battles are pretty fun, although I've only done the first two, the strategy element of managing banners is a pretty neat feature.

A lot of the new building and customization introduced to the graveyard is quite fun, although I'm still trying to develop and tune bodies that benefit from better graves, the new layout plots are quite neat to look at and I definitely see them looking great with all the modular variety

Although it is quite interesting, the new zombie system is a bit of a gripe for me, along with how stuff like furnaces work. Since this game is more angled to automation, you now need to come check in on them and pick up every finished item before it starts the next, which can be a bit tedious to do, especially with the fact that if you do want to automate stuff you need zombies with the proper mastery, which can take a little long to make one that's up to speed

That aside though, and probably the best part, is that the game is actually really stable, I played pretty much the moment it came out and I never once saw a crash or bug, which is a major relief considering lots of other recent games ive played.

This looks like it will end in the same way.
It's does not feel like a game release. It feels like early access.

The game is extremely grindy and disrespectful of your time. Not even for some game design reason. Just for "why not?". It was someone's first idea after pondering the problem for 30 seconds and then it had to be made exactly this way.
"Why though?" does not seem to be a question that occurred to anyone.

There is no exploration. All progress (or access to new resources) is achieved by quests that railroad you through the game. It's not even like you can explore - and the quests are there as a fallback (to pick up people who feel lost).
If you want to progress you have to grind the quests and the quests are the only way to progress.
Every single quest is a fetch quest. Sometimes several trips back and forth between your base and the quest giver to get one objective. And several minutes of conversation where you just click on space to get them to shut up as soon as possible - because they are not funny and not helpful either.
In the end it will tell you one item and you will have to bring it (usually crafting at your base, sometimes retrieved from other NPCs (that will then, probably, also want an item for their help)).

To make it worse they have a stupid "7 days of the week" system.
Certain things can only be done on ONE day of the week. Which means that, on average, the thing you want to do right now can only be done in 3 days. Go find something else to do until then. Or wait and let the time tick for ~30 minutes.
Want to hold a sermon to gain faith? Six days before the Sermon you have to pay a tax (when you are using Zombies you have to pay faith (and other stuff) to calm people down - yep the resource you are trying to gain is the tax you pay). Six days later (~1hour) you can hold the Sermon. If you forget to hold the Sermon (because you just did other things for an hour) the tax is gone, but you are also not getting any faith. Pay the tax again if you do it on the correct day.
Want good will of people? Deliver goods to a storage area (which is not explained in game (even worse: wrongly explained)). You can spend all week getting the goods there. Which, of course, will require several trips (since they make you carry the stuff in your hands instead of inventory). Walking back and forth several times is gameplay, right?
And if you have done all that you need to go back to the storage area on a specific day. If you don't talk to a guy on that day you are not getting your rewards. Try again 7 days later.

Currently I have to get 20 thumbs up by the citizens to hold a sermon. I am not even sure if you can do that in a week. If it is possible at all then only by using all available game systems. You can't just play the parts that you enjoy. No, you have to play through the parts you hate too. Or only hold a sermon every couple of weeks (yay, more waiting).
You are not playing the game the way you want, the game dictates how it expects you to play it.
Except that you are still paying your tax 6 days earlier. So either you will have to know in advance whether you will be able to do it this week and then pay your tax (trusting that you will make it). Or you wait until you have all the thumbs up. Which means that even if you ARE on the right day and you HAVE all the thumbs ups you need to hold the sermon - you won't be able to. Because 6 days earlier you didn't pay your tax. Pay the tax one day later and hold the sermon another 7 days later. Because that's gameplay.

And you need faith for *everything*. You need it to level up your skills, you need it to do research, you need it for crafting higher tier items, you need it to unlock fast travel beacons (you have to travel to a beacon and from there you can travel to any other beacon - it doesn't really help, but you can't not do it), you need it for quests, you need it to make sermons (which earn you faith or money or other stuff) - you even need it to earn faith. Escalating faith costs in multiple systems and a static faith income - and sometimes not even that.

Paid your tax when you had 10 Zombies, made another Zombie, now have to pay more tax and didn't get the crafting done on the same day? You lose all the resources you put already in without getting anything for it. Try again in 7 days and repay the tax you just futilely paid.

You also can't get rid of Zombies. You can't throw them in the water, sell them, burn them. That max 2-skills Zombie you made early will stay with you for the rest of the game (you might get to improve him, though). And you will pay tax for him. Made one too many and can't produce the items needed to pay the 20-Zombie tax? Tough luck. There is *nothing* you can do. You need faith to progress, but now you can only get faith at a highly stunted rate until you have progressed (a lot).
There is no clever game design reason why that system is even there in the first place. It's not improving the game. It's not moving players towards "healthy" ways of playing the game. It's not gameplay. It is just there to make the game more grindy.

You can't really get rid of old equipment. You can't melt it down, you can't sell it. You could theoretically give it to Zombies, but with the Zombies so stupid they need upgraded equipment even more than you. Giving Zombies your old equipment just means that they can't work jobs. So old equipment, old sermons and stuff like that just take more and more storage, ...
There are rumors that eventually you will be able to sell some of it at least. But that's stuck in, you guessed it, more quests you need to unlock (much later in the linear questline).

The voice acting is so-so. I didn't mind it as much as other people, but why make them talk with an accent when they then forget to use it half the time. That constant back and forth between completely normal language and deep accent (in the same character) is pretty unnerving for me (combined with the humor, that is okay the first couple of times, but gets really old really fast).

Then many basic UI/UX inconveniences. Containers are horrible. Instead of doing it like other games (where you unlock bigger inventory over time) you get sub containers. A container in your container that you can open to see what is inside. And each of those only accepts a certain type of item and is super awkward to use. I would prefer not to use them at all, but then you are stuck with a tiny inventory.

You can't remove fertilizer from a crop bed *before* seeding (only replace, no removing).

The supply area UI is complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. On the board you can click stuff and it moves and has submenus. I don't think anything you do there actually changes anything. The actual supply "interface" is a stack of chests that look like they don't do anything and that don't react in any way when you use it (you know it works because stuff leaves your hands).
Or maybe it doesn't and my stuff just keeps disappearing weekly without doing anything. At least that would explain why I don't seem to get rewards.

Right now I am pretty much stuck there. For all progression I need wooden beams. To get wooden beams I need an NPC to like me (a lot). And to get him to like me I need to send a weekly package for several weeks (at least three weeks (?), but I think it might also be bugged and just not reward me the likes I need).
-> Added later: It was a bug (I think). Next (real world) day I checked in and instantly got the missing likes (and/or opportunity to talk to the guy) without doing anything.
It not fun. It's not enaging gameplay. It's just a chore. Stretched out as much as it possibly can. Because, apparently, that's gameplay.

\n\t\t\t\t\tAs someone who loved the first Graveyard Keeper and played it all the way through at least 3 times, I was out of my mind to find out they were making a sequel. I downloaded the demo, preordered the game on sale, the whole 9. I liked the demo very much and was excited for launch today.

While it's nice to be back in this familiar world, I can't get over some of the choices they made. There are things that are significant step backs from the first game and many choices feel like artificially inflated game length. This isn't EA. This is 1.0 release. And this is what they felt we should be given.

-Instead of a teleportstone, you have milestones you activate as fast travel points on the map. Great, right? Except, you can't USE those fast travel points unless you're already AT a milestone. Can't use them from your map. On top of which, the fast travel milestones require faith to unlock. This is going to be a recurring issue.

-Faith, remember that ultra-rare currency that you can only get ONE day a week? Faith, that thing that used to be for researches and church upgrades? Well now Faith is used for researches, milestone activation, AND gaining skill levels to be able to do tasks! So this again, ONCE A WEEK currency is being split into all different directions. Oh and did I mention you can't hold sermons to get faith unless you have a certain amount of Town Gratitude? Yes, you need town currency to unlock and improve the sermon you use to get Faith currency.

-THIS is the update that upset me the most. NOW you have personal skill trees. Which would be fine if they upgraded fairly or easily. Instead, you have to get a certain amount of levels in 5 different tech trees. Those increase every time you level up. And when the free ones at the beginning run out, you need to buy them with Faith. FAITH, remember that really RARE AF resource you don't get a lot of? That's now being used to do every other thing?

Well if you, like me at the time of writing, have 4 Mechanical levels and need 5 to smelt IRON (AN INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT RESOURCE THE GAME MAKES A POINT TO TELL YOU THAT YOU NEED TO DO), now you need to buy the last 2 points to make level 5. Know how I need to do that? I need to use 5 faith to buy 2 each of the upgrades I already worked to unlock. I get at the most, 7 faith a sermon if I'm pushing town gratitude to max. So to recap: In order to smelt iron, something behind which massive amounts of progression is unlocked, I need to collect 10 Faith over the course of 2 in-game weeks and not use it for anything else but two progression bars to level up to 5 Mechanical knowledge in order to unlock the RIGHT to smelt Iron.

-Scripted strategy events. While this isn't as bad as I thought, you now have to pour MORE resources into battles against zombie hordes. I'm sure the devs thought this would be a fun new game mode. Instead it's yet another slog you need to pour zombies and weapons into in order to progress saving the Town.

-The zombies are given to you way earlier than in GK1. Fantastic, right? EXCEPT. They need certain levels of tech trees in order to DO ANYTHING. Mine have just sat there at their workstations because they can't DO anything. The game does a ♥♥♥♥ job of explaining how they work, I had to find a Reddit post that told me "Take the zombie and move it to the workstation you need worked on." Only to find that red tech tree icon meaning they don't have the skill to work on whatever you need worked on. How do you level that? No idea! You apparently need 50 of a tech currency (the red, green or blue things) but I had that and still couldn't unlock their usefulness!

-Oh, remember how you used to be able to queue up a bunch of things from the crafters and they would just make it all at once and you could pick it up off the floor? Sorry if you liked that aspect, because now you have to manually go in and clear the queue to get the next thing crafted!

Everything that I like about this game - the new base, the fact that resources aren't a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ map away, even the story - is overcrowded by junk mechanics that bloat gameplay, increase friction and reduce the fun the first game mastered. I hate that I can't recommend this sloggy mess in its current state even if I'll likely continue playing it.

I understand the beginning is supposed to be more difficult. I understand as you progress, things open up that make the game easier. But having to play to the X-point of a game in order to have fun is incredibly poor game design. I wish I had more praise. I love this IP. I wanted to love this game. But the choices they made as developers make the game unfun, overly complicated and a chore. If any of this gets addressed I'll revisit this, but as it stands, I'm very disappointed to say you can likely pass for now.

Edit 9/24/26: Well, apparently I didn't even get far enough to discover yet another issue with the Faith system. If you have “too many zombies,” the town dislikes it. As a result, you receive Faith penalties from your sermons. Yes. Faith. That ultra-rare, once-a-week currency, which is now required for half the game's progression, can also be penalized for making too much use of the zombie automation system in Graveyard Keeper. The game... which centers... around zombies... penalizes you for making... too many zombies. Wow.

In my original review I neglected to mention Insanity. Taking certain injuries or performing autopsies raises Insanity, which reduces your maximum Stamina. Certain foods lower it, as does sleeping while under the exhaustion debuff (the blue Zzz circle). But if you have too much Insanity, all of it isn't removed by sleeping. It was a small issue to me, but in a game already filled with additional resource gates and maintenance systems, it's yet another friction point.

I've also since discovered that third-party mods address several of the issues I talked about in my original review. I'm genuinely glad those options exist, and that I'm not alone in thinking these are problems. But “there's a mod for that” doesn't change my assessment of the game as it was put out by the devs. An interested gamer shouldn't need community modifications to remove mechanics that make the base game substantially less enjoyable for them. Graveyard Keeper 2, while not specifically worthy of a refund, feels like a chore. I unironically shut off the game several times to do irl chores and work as a better way of spending my free time instead of playing this.

GK2 is game about managing a town full of annoying manbabies with 0 personality traits besides being infuriating, boring and straight up punchable. From the bottom of my heart all the characters are horrible, writing is boring and the story is a snoozefest. The only interesting thing about it is hearing about the protagonist from the first game every now and then.

Creating zombies is too annoying, slow and inconvenient for how many zombies you need by mid/late game. Almost every ingame system is inferiour to the original; It's mind-boggling. The underground "Factorio" knockoff is a waste of your time and resources that was made by someone who only played the game with a console enabled to spawn zombies/resources for themself without any consideration of how scuffed it is. You can't pin recipes, or preplan a layout so you'll end up running around gathering resources over and over again trying to setup something with 10 zombies for hours. Something that you can already produce quicker in your main base with just the two-three zombies involved and a fraction of resources spent. Unlike any other "factory" games (like let's say Dyson Sphere Program) you don't want to optimise anything or to rebuild anything to minmax your resources and produce. Regardless of what you do in the game, you just want it to be done and dusted.

More so - it's such a downgrade, it looks like there were no playtesters involved in any of the in-game mechanics. Some examples:
1) You need to touch all the workstations to loot 1-3 items you are producing while you have 200+ in queue every couple of minutes or the production simply STOPS. If you want it automated you need to have highly skilled zombies which have their own skill trees that level at a snail's pace while equipping them with best gear possible which is still not enough to make them get over a skillcap softlock. Your zombie needs to produce bronze for 3 hours of real time before it can start producing iron and so on.
2) Zombies don't know how to bring firewood into the special firewood storage. So to keep your workstations operational you need to add firewood manualy across the whole map even if you have hundrads of firewood in your regular boxes.
3) Zombies refuse to touch the compost pit so you always need to do it manually, you are a little compost boy.
4) While YOU as a player have an ability to use workstations while your materials are in the boxes around the area, zombies can't do that, so you have to build 1 carrier station for every work station unless you want them to stay afk while a single zombie walks around carrying materials to and from the workstation. One carrier can BARELY manage a single work station that is operated by the worst zombie without any speed/production skills.
5) Carrier zombies don't get any experience or level up in any way or become faster in any way, shape or form. They are an actual biomass with the singular puprose of wasting your time and resources.
6) There is no respec in the game so if you make poor descisions while leveling your protagonist there is no way of walking that back. And you will regret EVERY choice you make. Spent too much on the end game skills/buffs - early game is unberable. Spent too much on early game - endgame is painful. Spent points gradually between the two obvious early/late game choices? Didn't get any noticable benefits from either. Point 7 is why you can't just "level up everything" even though on paper you should be able to eventually.
7) You need hundreds of "Faith" to level everything up and you can't even skip the ingame time to power level yourself, because Faith now needs "thumbs up" which is new type of resource that you get here and there in small increments. Except you need to actively play the game and engage with all the mechanics. So you can't realistically afk to level up your skill trees once an ingame week to have a better experience playing. Plus a ton of crafts also need faith, one of the quests actually asks you for 150 faith on top, so the faith is your biggest soft lock in the game. Pair this with an extra mechanic that pops up randomly after one of the quests and cuts your faith gains down to 20% that you need to counter by doing extra chores every 1-4 weeks (depending on the level of this said chore) and you have an absolutely miserable experience.
8) You always produce either even or odd resources and crafts also ask for even or odd materials. So you are almost always left with a single piece of produce that wastes your inventory or storage space.

There is a TON of very easily fixable annoying elements and balance changes that any playtester could have pointed out. I can go on and on about all of them, but I don't care about this enough, so the ones from the top of my head would have to suffice.

I'd bet that they fired all the devs from GK1 or the original team fell apart at some point. The head of the studio most likely replaced his former team with uni graduates who vibe coded the game features and generated some assets that they didn't have in GK1. There are so many illogical inconsistencies in gameplay between the two games that it can't be possibly made by the same people. It was made by someone who didn't bother to understand why GK1 was made the way it was.

Graveyard Keeper 2 is skinwalker pretending to be GK1, but it does not undestand what it is. That being said GK2 is not a pure unrelated cashgrab, but it sure feels like it's on the edge of being one.

Lastly: GK2 100% uses AI generated assets. As an artist with 18 years of experience just trust me on this. Sadly though, this is not the reason why my review is negative. GK2 is genuinely a mediocre game at best. All they had to do is copy the first one and they couldn't do that.\t\t\t\t\t

1st. My game got soft locked due to a bug with the crematorium. Hoping for a patch to fix this.

2nd. They clearly used AI to generate the art for their cutscenes. It’s jarring to see terrible ChatGPT comic style art jammed into a game that looks, mostly, lovely between cut scenes. The devs should be disclosing this up front for everyone. Disappointing to see such dishonesty.

\n\t\t\t\t\tIt honestly doesn't seem that much different from the first game, which I loved playing when I was younger, the new level system sucks and the faith currency makes gameplay so much slower for no reason. If I need to level something up to progress, I shouldn't have to wait 2 in-game weeks to get enough faith to level up. I'll still wind up only needing the thing I leveled up for, for a day or two, then I have to wait another 2 weeks to get more faith.

Also, the devs stated they didn't use AI, and there is obvious AI use. I mainly see it in the cutscenes but I'm sure if they used it there, it's in other places and I don't want to support a dev that both does that, and doesn't disclose that they did it, it's super disrespectful to the consumers.

I'll keep playing it for now, I want to get as much out of my poorly-spent $20 as I can, but I can't recommend this game for the annoyingly tedious gameplay, and the undisclosed AI use.\t\t\t\t\t

Like for example, I had no idea what the purple bar in the Energy section was supposed to represent because the game never told me.
