It's a very simple farming simulator, where the core gameplay loop is finding new slimes, fruits and vegetables, then farming them, to get plorts (what the slimes drop) to sell for money.
It's not complex in the slightest. If you expect a challenge, and get bored when things are too easy, this isn't for you.
So what do you even do?
Make money and grow crops, or chickens, you can then feed Largo slimes for keys to unlock more maps, and repeat.
It's not a long game. But there are a lot of gameplay sinks to keep you playing. Automation, which I found too tedious to even bother with. Wait ten minutes of real time to get some random item. You can buy decorations, which are too expensive and pretty useless, or some new areas, which were far too tedious to run to and farm at.
I think once the player gets bored of the exploration -> new slime and crop -> farm it -> repeat, there isn't really much else to bother with. Making money is easy once you have a good setup. And I basically ignored the 'market' where prices for plorts are dynamic, and can rise and fall each day.
I didn't care for the story, thought it was uninteresting.

My wife absolutely LOVED all the different slimes, but obviously loved the tabby slimes, even though they get into so much mischief. She's played both 1 and 2, and I know for a fact if she were still here, she'd definitely still come back to it once in a while in order to just look at all the cute slimes. The bones of a very fun exploration/ranch game is there. The loop is solid, the slimes are adorable and the best part of the game. But the traveling gets old very quickly and the lack go fast travel points until late game was a bad decision in my opinion because it made backtracking to the ranch exhausting.
I can see why people like it, I lost track of time a lot when I was playing it, but I was also frustrated and didn’t feel like I was rewarded enough for my exploration. Maybe the sequel is better but I’m not sure I’ll try it.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Adorable graphics, surprisingly emotional story (though it's not the focus of the gameplay), gets you trying to maximize profits like a real farmer but above all it's just a very fun game, funny achievements and hard in parts I didn't expect it to be at all. I love the music and how sand-box feeling it can be even with linear progression.
Does get a little boring to get around the map after it expands, but I'm probably just really bad at making portals for faster travel lol!
