\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI'm giving this a negative review to draw attention to the issues I'm going to lay out below - the devs have already responded to the keybinding issue very quickly so while this list is vast, I hope they're already making headway on, well I hope most of it. I look forward to editing this review to reflect those changes.
Crimson Moon has good bones. That is the frustrating part.
The game looks great, the gothic-knight aesthetic works, the combat has real weight, and the 2-player co-op formula has real potential. I want this game to succeed. Most of my complaints are not “this idea is bad.” They are “please stop making me fight the game’s systems long enough to enjoy the good part.”
1. Controls & Camera
The key-binding patch was needed and I’m glad it came quickly, but the camera still needs serious work.
Let us zoom farther out. Improve tracking. Fix how close and chaotic the camera gets during executions and Angel Mode fights. During some of these sequences I have a better chance of identifying model numbers on individual parts of Michael Bay’s Transformers than telling what the hell is happening to my own character.
Borrow shamelessly from Souls games here. Nobody is going to complain that the camera works too well.
2. Combat
Combat itself is one of the strongest parts of the game.
It is slow, heavy, and intentional. Big attacks have commitment, and whiffing should get you punished. Charged attacks feel good, jump attacks have real heft, and sprinting attacks being their own attack state — and usable as combo-window connectors — is a smart idea.
The issue is clarity and reliability, not lack of ideas.
Parrying is the biggest example. The window feels inconsistent, and there are too many moments where the timing looks right but nothing happens. That becomes a major problem when so many boons and bonuses are built around parry effects. If parry can support an entire build, failure needs to feel like my mistake, not a coin flip.
More weapon and moveset variety over time would also help different builds feel mechanically different, not just statistically different.
3. Loadouts & Player Flexibility
The current loadout flow feels backwards.
You select a mission, THEN get access to your armor. Worse, if you join Quick Match and the host is already mid-run, you can get dumped in without getting to equip your build and end up stuck in the base Nephilim setup.
We should be able to view, equip, compare, and edit our armory anywhere in the hub.
I would also allow a limited number of saved-loadout swaps during a run. If I join as a tank and my partner is already tanking, let me switch to healer/caster/ranged — but if that burns my last swap before the boss, that is my problem. Fair compromise.
4. Gear Progression & Rarity
The temporary-run loot and permanent armory systems do not connect well enough.
Example: I own Boots #8 at Epic. During a run I find Boots #8 at Legendary. Because I already “own” Boots #8, I cannot store that better version as a new discovery, so the Legendary upgrade effectively dies when the run ends.
If I equip it, extract with it, or deliberately spend one of my limited storage slots on it, that should count as a permanent one-step upgrade in my armory.
Finding a Legendary version of gear I already like should make me think “HELL YES,” not “well, this is nice for 20 minutes.”
5. Gear Bonuses / Buildcraft
You can find armor you already own with better skills, stat boosts, or bonuses during a run, but your permanent version stays the boring base version.
There needs to be some eventual way to preserve or recreate those modifiers: unlock affixes by discovering them, reroll them at the blacksmith, transfer them, or add them to an item-specific pool.
RNG is fine, but there needs to be a path from “I got lucky” to “I built this character.”
6. Loot & Salvage
Co-op loot should actually be cooperative.
If one player picks up gold, both players should get it. Do not incentivize two gothic knights who are supposed to be saving the world to suddenly become Black Friday shoppers racing each other to a coin pile.
Unused gear also needs salvage value. Let us sell it, scrap it, or auto-convert unwanted loot into a small amount of gold/materials. Right now too much loot simply evaporates.
7. Gold & Economy
Gold is important for upgrading weapons and armor, but drops feel inconsistent and the economy needs more depth.
If I am getting little or no XP from enemies, then gold and loot become even more important as the reward for fighting. A hard run should not end with “no XP, barely any gold, and everything I found turned into smoke.”
Blacksmith upgrades also need clearer value across gear types. Shields in particular currently seem to gain little or nothing meaningful from upgrading.
Gold would also become more interesting if it fed into affix rerolls, modifier upgrades, rarity progression, or other targeted buildcraft instead of mostly being an upgrade tax.
8. XP & Difficulty
I am playing on the highest difficulty and hit level 20 very early, but enemies in some early areas now appear to give no XP at all.
Maybe I am overleveled. Fine. But tell me that.
If XP is capped by area, enemy level, mission, or some other rule, the game needs to communicate it clearly. Higher difficulty does not have to shower players with rewards, but increased risk should have some visible payoff — better loot odds, more gold, higher rarity, something.
9. UI & Information
The game badly needs clearer explanations.
Damage types, stats, status effects, buffs/debuffs, gear bonuses, currencies, and progression systems all need better tooltips and breakdowns.
There are good systems in here, but the game often acts like I attended the design meetings and should already know how they work.
Ultrawide support also needs attention. Background artwork gets cropped, post-run screens frame badly, and in parts of the loadout UI I cannot even properly see my own character.
10. Quests / Bounties / Hub NPCs
Quests and bounties need to clearly show:
Objective → Progress → Reward → Amount → Claimed/Completed.
Right now I often have no idea what I am actually earning or how much.
The merchant, blacksmith, and lore/boon NPC also need much better explanations, especially the relationship between run currency, permanent unlocks, and boon availability.
11. Boons & Player Agency
Boons are fun, but builds cannot become entirely RNG.
If I want to make a parry build, I should eventually have some way to pursue a parry build — unlock boon pools, favor certain categories, reroll choices, exclude unwanted options, etc.
“I hope the game gives me my build this time” is not the same thing as buildcraft.
12. Co-op Communication
For a game built around 2-player co-op, communication is shockingly limited.
There is cross-platform play, but no useful way to communicate unless players go arrange Discord themselves.
At minimum we need pings/preset messages:
Follow me. Wait. Help. Enemy. Item. Go here. Ready?
Emotes would be great too. Full voice chat is optional; a basic cooperative language is not.
13. Cosmetics
Please add transmog.
You made a game about flashy gothic knights murdering monsters in elaborate armor. Let us look cool without sacrificing our build.
This one feels self-explanatory.
14. Replayability
More variable layouts, encounters, minibosses, modifiers, branching events, hidden areas, or objectives would give repeated runs much more life. The formula is begging for stronger roguelike elements.
Bottom Line
I am criticizing Crimson Moon because I actually like it.
The visuals are strong, the 2-player focus works, and the combat is heavy and satisfying. There are genuinely good ideas here.
The game just needs a LOT of quality-of-life work, clearer progression, more player agency, and better connective tissue between systems.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tNine hours in, I like Crimson Moon. Let me start there, because the rest of this is probably going to sound like I don’t.
I’m currently in the third district and the game has been a lot of fun. The price matters too. At $19.99, I wasn’t expecting some enormous AAA production with 100 hours of handcrafted content. What is here is already worth the asking price for me.
But this game keeps getting the difficult things right and then tripping over ♥♥♥♥ that other games solved years ago.
The aesthetic is one of its strongest parts. It immediately reminded me of Darksiders—not because it copies Darksiders, but because it has that same unapologetic dark-fantasy attitude.
It feels like the art team said, “If we’re making a game about knights, let’s do the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ knight properly.”
Some armour makes you look like a full Paladin. Other sets turn you into a scorched, spiked Dark Knight that crawled straight out of Hell. The shields look brutal, the weapons have personality and the silhouettes are excellent. They didn’t give us another bloke wearing brown leather trousers and call him a knight.
Then you find a fantastic armour design covered in bright purple or royal blue cloth—and there is no dye system.
What are we doing?
The game already understands that appearance matters because it has transmog (kinda – some sets or pieces of gear have similar or the same stats). It lets you preserve your character’s identity while changing equipment. That makes the lack of even a basic dye system more confusing. Give us primary and secondary colour options. You have already made killer armour; let us wear it without looking like five unrelated loot drops were stapled together.

I am not complaining because it requires timing. I like parry systems, and I do not want an automatic win button or an enormous safety window.
The problem is that the input and the animation do not feel connected.
If I press parry when the enemy’s weapon visually reaches me, I am already late. My character still has to begin raising the shield before the parry appears to become active. Successful parries feel as though they require me to predict the impact and press noticeably before it happens.
I have not frame-tested it, so I am not presenting this as a measured number, but it feels roughl and awkward. This makes the system feel predictive rather than reactive.
Learning an enemy’s delayed swing is fair. Learning that my shield’s visible position does not match its active parry window is not satisfying.
Putting block on LB and parry on LT makes the defensive controls feel even more awkward. I understand the design argument for separate buttons: a failed parry remains a real failure instead of safely becoming a normal block. That creates more risk.
Fine. Give us the choice.
Sekiro, God of War Ragnarök and Jedi: Survivor all demonstrate the cleaner alternative: hold one button to block, but time the initial press correctly and it becomes a parry or deflection. Crimson Moon is not using twelve active abilities. It gives you two. Controller space is not the problem here.
At an absolute minimum, full controller remapping should exist. In 2026, developers should not be deciding which combat layout every player is allowed to use—especially in a game built almost entirely around repeating and mastering its combat.
Where Crimson Moon genuinely does something clever is its run-based gear progression.
It has roguelite and extraction ideas, but it removes a lot of the miserable gear fear. You can replace equipment during a run, use inventory slots to carry alternatives and bring discoveries back into your persistent arsenal for later runs. Combined with transmog, you don’t have to rebuild your entire character’s identity every time.
The gear you find feels like actual progression rather than temporary confetti that disappears when the run ends. You can experiment with new drops without feeling as though one mistake will throw your entire investment into the bin.
That part is cool as ♥♥♥♥.
Unfortunately, the inventory then turns into its own ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boss fight.
Boons are central to making builds, yet there is no useful way to filter equipment by Boon. After upgrading and testing several pieces, I can spend ten minutes scanning everything while trying to remember which effect is sitting on which helmet, weapon or chest piece.
Loot-based RPGs need proper filtering. Let me filter by equipment slot, Boon, rarity, element, status effect or keyword. Even a simple text search would help. If your game expects me to compare dozens of modifiers, then giving me the tools to compare them is not an optional quality-of-life bonus. It is part of the gear system.
Finally, the graphics.
Crimson Moon looks good. The art direction is better than the raw graphical technology, but it still looks good.
It does not look so good that native performance should feel optional.
On my setup, without upscaling and frame generation, the game is cooked. I am tired of developers treating these technologies as a replacement for base optimization. Upscaling and frame generation are useful tools, but they should improve an already functional game—not act as life support.
That is especially frustrating in a combat game built around precise defensive timing. Frame generation can make movement look smoother, but it cannot repair weak base responsiveness.
So where am I after nine hours?
I’m still playing, I’m still enjoying it and I do think Crimson Moon is worth its asking price. The armour, weapons, run structure, enemies and core combat have enough personality to keep pulling me back.
But the game needs full control customization, a parry that visually agrees with its active timing, proper inventory filters and a basic dye system.
Those are not ridiculous feature requests. They are fundamental improvements that would let the good parts of the game breathe.
The bones are there and they are strong.
If the devs address these issues I’ll change my rating.

\n\n\t\t\t\tI’m currently in the third district and the game has been a lot of fun. The price matters too. At $19.99, I wasn’t expecting some enormous AAA production with 100 hours of handcrafted content. What is here is already worth the asking price for me.
But this game keeps getting the difficult things right and then tripping over ♥♥♥♥ that other games solved years ago.
The aesthetic is one of its strongest parts. It immediately reminded me of Darksiders—not because it copies Darksiders, but because it has that same unapologetic dark-fantasy attitude.
It feels like the art team said, “If we’re making a game about knights, let’s do the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ knight properly.”
Some armour makes you look like a full Paladin. Other sets turn you into a scorched, spiked Dark Knight that crawled straight out of Hell. The shields look brutal, the weapons have personality and the silhouettes are excellent. They didn’t give us another bloke wearing brown leather trousers and call him a knight.
Then you find a fantastic armour design covered in bright purple or royal blue cloth—and there is no dye system.
What are we doing?
The game already understands that appearance matters because it has transmog (kinda – some sets or pieces of gear have similar or the same stats). It lets you preserve your character’s identity while changing equipment. That makes the lack of even a basic dye system more confusing. Give us primary and secondary colour options. Simple things like
- Want to swap your gear while in the lobby? First you have to select the mission, then walk to the loadout section.
- Naming your loadout presets is impossible and hovering over #1-5 does not give you indication which build you are picking, as the character model keeps displaying which gear you have currently equipped.
- Want to go back and select another mission, because mission does not contain the mobs for your bounty mission? --> You'll wait untill the map zoom out animation is done.
- Want to adjust the difficulty after having selected the first mission? Not possible, you have to reset the lobby.
- Do you want to upgrade in the lobby in between missions? Don't do it. You will boon (power up) the piece had and will be left with a piece with only defense stats.
Now, all these things are midly annoying. But, in my 12hours at time of writing, I have encountered multiple game breaking bugs:
- Final boss fight in coop: crash to desktop from my side, partner got booted to the lobby. My partner was able to rejoin but we lost EVERYTHING we acquired during the run, forcing us to fight with the default (non upgraded) loadout. This is virtually impossible, so we died very quickly.
- During a "clear the area" event, the last mob did not properly die, preventing us from progressing the run. 1 hour of progression: gone.
It's a bummer, because again, the combat, bosses and environment all feel and look great.
I was just saying to my coop partner: The game feels like every mechanic and system has been seperately.
It's like the devs did not do a single full run in coop.

- Want to go back and select another mission, because mission does not contain the mobs for your bounty mission? --> You'll wait untill the map zoom out animation is done.
- Want to adjust the difficulty after having selected the first mission? Not possible, you have to reset the lobby.
- Do you want to upgrade in the lobby in between missions? Don't do it. You will boon (power up) the piece had and will be left with a piece with only defense stats.
Now, all these things are midly annoying. But, in my 12hours at time of writing, I have encountered multiple game breaking bugs:
- Final boss fight in coop: crash to desktop from my side, partner got booted to the lobby. My partner was able to rejoin but we lost EVERYTHING we acquired during the run, forcing us to fight with the default (non upgraded) loadout. This is virtually impossible, so we died very quickly.
- During a "clear the area" event, the last mob did not properly die, preventing us from progressing the run. 1 hour of progression: gone.
It's a bummer, because again, the combat, bosses and environment all feel and look great.
I was just saying to my coop partner: The game feels like every mechanic and system has been seperately.
It's like the devs did not do a single full run in coop.
I will definitely come back to this game in the future, but for fighting the UI, design choices and bugs are too frustrating.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

1. Over-the-top base gothic style with unique zone styles and gear aesthetics really make this game visually appealing.
2. While nothing new, this game's approach to souls-like combat is solid, serviceable, and enjoyable.
3. (Most) weapon arts are fun to use and satisfying to execute.
4. The boons provide proper roguelike gameplay to each run.
5. Enemy and boss variety are just enough to keep runs fresh (for now).
6. Co-op gameplay (which I have exclusively played) feels great.
7. Even in "epic" length maps, the matches never feel drawn out nor overly long.

1. The game doesn't properly explain how its particular form of roguelike works, I had to learn through trial-and-error and Reddit posts.

5. The max inventory space is problematic at the beginning, but after 10 hours, you no longer find enough unique items to add to your armory, making this a non-problem eventually.
6. The majority of armory equipment does not have an additional affect, meaning the same items with effects are always used over items with no effects / flat bonuses.
7. A lack of transmog / cosmetic armor will have you looking silly at a certain point.

All that gear we "purify" and get to keep? Only VERY FEW actually have built in powers, Otherwise they are just flat stat sticks.
They claimed their meta progression would be about synergies and the gear we got in runs we would keep so long as cleared the runs, but as it turns out the gear we get in runs? we just get their basic, no bonuses version, it's super lame and doesnt let us make our own synergies or builds at all.
But in reality? The only real meta progression is leveling to get more healing items and a bit more HP/Mana/Stam. This is a Bait-and-switch. I do not recommend this game until these things have been addressed.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Unfortunately this fell short of expectations - there isn't much to the end-game, nor deep customization as you'd expect.. all the weapons are pretty much just swords, with limited axes and hammers with the differentiators being 'weapon arts' i.e: a SKILL1 or SKILL2.
Lifesteal, frost, burning, poison.. poison being by far the weakest..the aura is garbo, the poison floor aoe when you run around garbo.
There needs to be a glossary of sorts built inside the game similar to Deadzone Rogue that explains what each of the abilities are. What's Sunderance? What's Burning do? What's Frost do? What does +85 power mean? What does +500 Bleed do? Nowhere is it explained. Just finished the boss and don't really feel the motivation to collect all the boons.. the Incantation Sword clearly is the frontrunner S+ tier weapon of choice. 0 flasks, just 8 hits on enemies and you get a new flask? Extremely OP for bossing.. but doesn't look like much replayability/customization.. there are NO two-handed weapons besides a polearm in this game. No two-handed sword? You're forced to use a sword and shield? Oh dear.
NO shared progress either.. only the host's story progresses. Take a leaf out of Sephyria's notebook for ideas on shared account progression.
And of course, the keybinds. In 2026 it should not be a 'requested' feature. Especially a Souls-like game where muscle memory probably matters.
A game that Crimson Moon could look toward for inspiration is Sephiria. That game is deep af and extremely intuitive with lots of user power fantasy and roguelike elements. Great itemization, shared account progress, and replayability. I had high hopes Crimson Moon would be the soulslike 3D 3rd person equivalent!
I'd give it a 6/10 in its current state - played co-op with my brother from launch until now, degenned it from launch. Glad to have bonded with him and remember this game for what it is, but there's a lot of ground to cover ahead if they want to gain any traction. Game probably would've fared better being marketed as Early Access a la Path of Exile 2 and not a complete game.. there is a lot of things missing.

Biggest gripe, is despite recent patch, my game just reset after a crash and I lost all progress made. I don't have hundreds of hours thankfully but now super careful how much time I invest in a game that's not currently working. sure it has a few rough edges but what game does not at least this is playable and for people moaning about keybindings just play with a controller until the issue is resolved clearly they made a error that there going to fix it seems like everyone latley wants to make everything a negative this game does not deserve it give them a chance
you know most people nowadays just want the same slop like call of duty and yearly release of crappy buggy games
at least these devs are trying something let it bloom guys we the commuinty are what keeps these types of games alive
the only con so far ive come across is the keybinding but that does not stop me for now playing with a controller until the issue is fixed

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThe game has a lot of issues and should have been cooked longer. I completed a Run on the Standard playthrough and on the Hellish difficulty, both were done in coop. There are many bugs in the game, and many features that aren't explained well.
Bugs - Coop related
- The joined player must pick up lore/quest items prior to the host or the joined player cannot pick them up.
- If the game crashes and it will, the joined player can rejoin but they will not have any of their boons or gear.
- If you save and quit and re-join the host you will not have your gear or boons.
- A bug that made the second player deal near zero damage, dying/reviving did not solve this, finishing the current zone did not finish this. Quitting and rejoining did not solve this (and you lose your boons/gold/souls by doing so).
- Player 2 also won't ever have their full potions available to them unless they find them on the ground in a run. The restock option in the merchant store is also not available to Player 2.
Issues with boons
- After doing the 2 full runs boons don't feel that meaningful they don't ever make you feel more powerful or make a meaningful change in gameplay.
- Boons also don't stack, example having a boon that adds 200 frost damage to light attacks, then finding another one that does the same thing does not add another 200 frost damage to light attacks. The duplicate boon does not show up in the boon menu. It shouldn't allow you to pick up the same boon if this is intentional.
Due to boons disappearing after rejoining from a crash in the middle of the final boss and rejoining we were able to still kill the final boss with zero armor or boons.
We completed the final boss the first time in standard difficulty, and moved to Hellish expecting a difficulty jump. But the only difference really was having better gear drop during the run, and a great increase of gold dropping. The boons still lacked any meaningful changes.
