\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tAfter many late nights of optimization, speed run fails, mega-basing throughput issues, modded warptorio and ultracube, as well as failing to rope in my friends into my addiction, I write this review.
This game really does have something special, at it's core I find that it rewards problem solving and keeps me coming back in 3 ways.
1. The primal urge to see resources stockpiling in the way of a numerical graph of current and past achievements.
2. A tech tree that lets you have some reward salience, like trading out expansion for efficiency i.e. building efficiency modules instead of a new steam plant.
3. Being able to use a robust system that allows for stylistic choices on how to design a base. You want to use trains, ok... double headed or single? Main bus or spaghetti? One huge wall or outposts? This is also compounded with the host of new system solutions in space age.
The core gameplay loop, for me, is already enough to classify this as one of the best games of all time. The amount of starting variables you can modify like science cost, enemy presence, and world/ore patch details are truly immense. After all my hours I can still load up a game right now and churn out a truly unique experience that I will lose another bout of sleep from.
I also think the community is outstanding as well as sadistic. The mods are ridiculous to the point where sometimes I forget it's the same joyful factory game I started with... Spending hours looking for the reason why production stalled only to find out that my ratios were off and I have a backlog of thousands of useless byproducts... THAT YOU CAN'T VOID. The staggering force of hundreds of sub 20 minute from start zombies that overwhelm even the best of turret spam, and entire unique planets that have no hesitation soft-locking you if you mismanage enough or neglect power. I recommend this to each and every gamer I talk to because chances are you'll find your own slice of factory heaven, whether it be base game or with mods.
Then we have the automation and blueprinting. I've played the "Big 3", Factorio, Satisfactory, and DSP to completion in each of their own regards and the one thing that always keeps the crown where it belongs is the blueprinting and my own personal robot army. Nothing feels better in this game then having the option to utilize builds to problems you've already solved elsewhere in a seamless and easy way...
Yes I love designing and building from scratch a green chip line that can fully saturate a belt, but doing that over and over again gets old even for me. People might argue that the other two games have something similar, but I feel like they're clunky and restrictive both in size and interconnectivity.

I am/was literally a scientist for work and still this game challenges me in ways I don't expect. Something about learning to make your first factory, then realizing you need to scrap parts of it to make a better or more efficient or just less bad version is very satisfying. You really get a sense of your progress in organization and optimization.
I bought Space Age without even ever getting to the stage in the game where that would even open up lol, because I am determined now. I play this on my Macbook Air M3, and it never ceases to amaze me how seamlessly it plays on MacOS. To have an internal mod section that works on MacOS too is such a great quality of life enhancement. To know I played this as a man in my twenties with a custom built Desktop Tower all the way into my 30s with a general laptop is just wild to me.
I recommend this game to anyone who enjoys organization, factory games, progression systems, and problem solving. Sometimes it feels like work, but for those of us who love using our minds for these types of things it is easily the best game of it's genre even to this day. I prefer it over Satisfactory, due to the isometric view.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

WIth every repeat of them whispering that to me I picture in my head placing down some assemblers, making a belt line, crafting splitters and inserters and bringing everything together, and the sound effect that plays every time you place them, oh god is it beautiful. This game is like that but on crack! It takes time to learn. But I suggest you DO NOT look at tutorials online. Just stick to the Factorio Wiki. If you do this, you will have the joy of discovery each time you have an aha moment! But if you do watch tutorials, that's ok too. Maybe just stick to the beginners guides for now and allow yourself to learn the more advanced stuff as you play. GOOD LUCK! This game is definitely in my top 10 favorites of all time! But this IS the grand daddy of the genre.
Space age has a learning curve of here is a cliff <shove> too bad too sad if you aren't ready.
I'd recommend dyson sphere project and satisfactory over this for more casual players but there is a demo, and you will know what you are in for by the end of the demo. If you like creating huge bases of sprawling factories turing one component into another this game is for you.
What it does very well is that you are constantly unlocking new <things> that change how you need to build out your base,
My kids call it spreadsheet games. But there is a reason I'm still playing years after getting it ,am over 500 hours in and haven't finished the expansion.
Over all highly positive but if you do end up in a corner and feel like it is just a grind, step back and look at what you are doing. The game will not hold your hand and will let you make mistakes that feel like you want to throw the game away.
....And yet there is a gem that scratches an itch that can't be found in many clones that came after it.
You will need to look up a guide at some point and that is ok (eg nuclear power ratios) but it is a game that lets you build to a scale that most don't and it doesn't feel like you were robbed or forced to pay to win (there is no pay to win) 20,000,000 green chips is an achievment, and you aren't making these in lots of 10.
You'll think the game sucks and then realise there are tools you unlocked that you ignored that make your current issue easy again.

It's like a rubix cube that I'm trying to build and solve at the same time. This has gotten me hopelessly addicted. It's actually the reason I carry over very few blueprints from one playthrough to the next. I like to force myself to think through the problems I need to solve whereas slapping down a blueprint and q + left mouse click for an hour just doesn't do it for me. I highly recommend this game but don't let it takeover your life (this is a warning).\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
