\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThe narrative and writing in this game is unfortunately pretty weak, which makes recommending it fully difficult because it does have an incredibly unique atmosphere, the kind you'd expect if you've played NSO.
But, ultimately, this is a visual novel and should be judged on the storytelling. Every single character in this game is barely developed and weakly written, with the protagonist only being somewhat interesting as a POV character. Insufferable as he is, you easily get a sense of his view of the world and way of seeing things which at least remains entertaining. The overarching narrative remains weak, though.
In particular, the way the author writes character dialogue and the general prose leaves a lot of to be desired. Whether it's the protagonist, the little girl sister, or several of the other characters, conversations appear extremely stilted and unnatural, laden with writing that you'd expect from a 16 year old on Reddit trying to act as though they were a 500 IQ philosopher that loves namedropping all the classic works of art they've read as if it's a high-score. The prose does this too, and comes across very overwrought and pseudo-intellectual. Given what I've read from the author's blogs, it's hard to separate whether this is an attribute of the protagonist's mind or whether it's simply the writing style of the author. To me, it seems like a mixture of both, and the style really dulls my enjoyment of the story.
The most interesting part of the work, and the same thing with NSO, really, is that you can tell that the author's background of being an extremely terminally online otaku does genuinely lend them a deep understanding of modern and internet culture that very few other works are able to achieve. This is a novelty to read in itself, and the almost psychedelic style of the story creates a very unique-feeling experience. But this just isn't enough to make the story itself strong in any capacity, and nyalra's writing in a visual novel format feels genuinely in the wrong place.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI had an enjoyable time reading Sister Other Paranoia, delving into the mind of a cynical protagonist who is afraid of the outside world. He can't seem to form real connections with acquaintances or friends, and keeps everyone at a distance — a man who cannot trust other people, and whose distrust feeds directly into his fear and paranoia of the outside world. He relies on his telepathy to get to know people rather than trusting them.
Overall, the novel leans on philosophy and tries to make the reader see the world from the protagonist's perspective — specifically, how he places himself above other people simply because he can read their minds.
That said, the novel lacks meaningful character development until very close to the end. The true ending is unlocked by clicking your sister's forehead after playing your first playthrough. Judging by the CG gallery, the coworker is the only side character who gets a happy ending; everyone else reaches their own bad ending as a result of their own circumstances — the one exception being that the MC does actively push each of them toward suicide.
In the true ending, I understand that the protagonist needed to open the door, step outside, and learn to fully trust someone without reading their mind — to not see people as black and white. Still, I don't think Nyalra delivered a visual novel that truly stands out. The writing itself is strong, and I came away understanding the MC's perspective. However, it did not clearly distinguish itself through its world building or characters.
I feel the game lacks substantial development as a visual novel. The characters seem to exist mainly so the MC can project his own insecurities onto them — his inability to trust anyone (including himself), The interactions between the MC and the side cast often feel abrupt and don't flow smoothly. The coworker's arc is a good example: one such as the MC, lost in his own elaborate thoughts, then it cuts to the mc's coworker simply wishing he could be free of his dead-end shop job, then cuts again to the MC suggesting to the coworker that he should rob a yakuza-run store — with nothing bridging how a quiet wish for freedom turns into a suggestion of robbery.
This pattern is captured well in one of the game's own visuals: the MC is depicted as a lighthouse at the center of a web, with each side character reduced to a small animal portrait caught in the strands around him — the coworker as a monkey, the senpai as a bat, the parents as a ring, the crush Botan as a fox, and the childhood friend as a caterpillar. You hover over each panel in as a spider UI with your mouse, which suits the MC perfectly: he never truly want to help each character due to how the progress of each short character's story eventually crack until broken; Botan spirals into suicide from the main character due to her devaluing her own self-worth by sex-dating older men and hides in a fanboy club that worships her like a queen; and the friend never escapes the confines of working for a company until he "flies free" by jumping off a building; and the coworker, who eventually died to consequences of the main character's suggestions to rob a yakuza office; and the senpai can never write a rookie published novel due to his insecurities and the inability to be genuine, drowning in a river nearby because the mc couldn't give him real critique; and mc's parents who eventually hate on each other until they kill one other due to them cheating on one other. In every case, it's the MC's mind-reading, not just his silence, that does the real damage — he talks each of them into their ending, his influence amplifying their despair until it tips into suicide, or in the parents' case, murder.
There's even an implication that his sister might be the MC himself, since the only voice he ever hears in his own head is hers, saying "Onii-chan." It almost reads like an autobiography of Nyalra, about learning to see the world as it actually is instead of filtering everyone through your assumptions without getting to know them. Not to mention, the protagonist realize that happy endings are not so bad after all in the true ending. Then, where the hell is my happy endings for each of the character in the second playthrough. Why only the coworker? Conclusion in the true ending does feel unsatisfactory due to how little time we get to spend with the sister.

MC seethes with hatred which normally isnt a bad thing but it just feels so one dimensional as it isnt really elaborated on other than "i can see right through people and they all suck" and it gets so annoying to read sometimes. nobody other than maybe the MC has a fleshed out storyline, which is understandable for a short VN, but i feel like theres so little that it doesnt work with the narrative of extreme hatred, what is there to hate about these characters other than "ugh that disgusting little catterpillar is jealous of me blah blah". its so painful to read. and the fact that sahana only shows up to coddle him is 🙁. beautiful artwork, though.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

There were no branching choices during the first playthrough, 2nd playthrough had one . it's in no way a fault of the devs but I was mistaken on how this story was gonna go from seeing all the advertisements on twitter. I def was expecting more saya no uta vibes so if you wanted to play for something spooky like that it isn't the game for that.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tA big fan of Nyalras previous work, as Needy Streamer Overdose impacted Japan's mental health awareness, which also birthed a lot of similar style games in this "Dark Cute style". But also the main topic of someone's mental health and how social media, online perception and expectation can drive someone to the brink. We see this all the time in real life and Ame was a great representation of modern online fame. Even though it was represented in a visual point and click style game, NSO did a great job.
So going into Sister Other Paranoia I was excited to see what kind of story Nyalra would tell with this new narrative, as for most people, based on someone previous work there comes high expectation especially considering how great NSO succeeded.
I will try not to make it too lengthly and fairly spoilerish free, but going into the novel I felt like I definitely over expected a lot of points of the narrative, especially Sahana's purpose as a character. As she seemed like she would be a fairly important character in the story, but she came across as another side character that was not explored or given enough depth to feel any sort of attachment as the player. Im not really a professional in writing so please take my review with a grain of salt, im really just writing my thoughts. But as a user that consumes a lot of novels, I find an importance to feel attached to characters or make the reader care for them by making them more indepth, under standing their motives or importance, and how they connect to the MC and I feel like the story really tries to accomplish that, but it is done poorly. The MC himself is also very unlikeable but hes suppose to appear that way as he is a victim of his own mind, so of course he would be pessimistic around the world around him. so you have to see his point of view through his eyes and views. The concept was great in practice, but felt like it failed to accomplish what it was trying to do and fell off slowly or losing the plot.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I think you should approach this VN as you would a character study novella: it's short, it's centred around the main protagonist's psyche, his position in society and how that affects his life and the people around him and that's completely okay. you won't find exceptional world building or incredibly deep characterization from anyone who isn't the protagonist, because that's not what this VN is about. and i personally wouldn't want it to be in the first place: this VN is all of the things that nyalra exceeds at, a short character study on isolation in subculture spaces in the age of rampant capitalism, and that's exactly what makes me love his writing in the first place.

But I certainly wouldn't recommend this to someone who is looking for a visual novel to read. Subahibi, which many claim to be the most pretentious visual novel out there, is my holy grail. I expected to like this visual novel due to its psychological horror and pretentiousness... but I was disappointed.
If you can stand having to listen to a protagonist wallow in self-pity and spit vitriol at every opportunity, I think you can find enjoyment through what I thought were the nice aspects of the game.
To start off, the intended audience is incredibly niche. It seems to be speaking to the issues that writers have as they struggle with both an ego and an abundance of self-doubt... However, this is not well-addressed in most of the routes, which makes the visual novel's themes confusing and disjointed.
Igusa and Hiyakawa's routes (scenario?) had the best attempts at saying something poignant. The exemplification of envy that is brought on by success, and the disgusting ego the main character displays is a decent exploration of these ugly human emotions, but the author never really *does* anything significant with the story he seems to set up. We escalate and escalate, but never reach any satisfying climax or resolution to either of these character's arcs.
In the parent's and Botan's route, it seemed more like a rant about how women are always chasing male validation and that's all they live for (???). This game in general had a looot of vitriol and hatred for women that just confused me as a reader. I know we're supposed to think that Hasuya, our MC, has a wrong take on the world, but when our only two female leads play exactly into the sexist beliefs that Hasuya has... it makes it seem like the narrative supports the idea that women are attention-seeking floozies to the very end.
Dokudami was my favorite scenario and character, but I also felt he was sorely out of place. While every other character has their own struggles and self-worth or self-identity issues, Dokudami is just chilling. His route is a breath of fresh air among the oppressive routes (that, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed in my own way), and he was just an overall fun guy... but compared to the deep dive into human ugliness the other routes were attempting, Dokudami just contrasts the main character's incel energy with positive chad energy, and then they kiss.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI don't think its a bad game but not worth your time, so this is marked as a negative review. If I had to give a score it would just be 5/10, The more hours that pass since I read the more I've gotten annoyed thinking about this game so I wrote some thoughts.
I bought this game because I loved NGO and the anime but was disappointed that most of the interesting ideas here feel recycled from NGO anime, which is justified if nyalra just wants to reclaim it as his own again but it's so much weaker in every way, Botan being a good example where you can see a similar arc with Michika in NGO down to using the same rococo era painting in her beautiful suicide storyline.
The difference from having no alleviating scenes or fun character like Purple Lolipop the game just feels like a boring slog even at 4 hours thanks to the obnoxiously misanthropic, suffering from success mc whose internal monologue feels more like the main character from Hatred (2015) than anyone who has read any literature. I wanted to feel bad for this guy but I genuinely felt nothing watching him stab his own eardrums out.
None of the characters have any type of depth which makes sense from the mc's perspective but it just makes every scene boring, lecturing on his own schizoid ideas of why they click, which I hoped would be a lead up to mc having a realization that he is projecting ideas and cannot read minds but nope. The true end does touch on this but it feels unearned having all his problems solved by touching grass and going on holiday rather than his interactions with the real humans in his daily life.
Sahana should have been the positive factor for the story but she has so little screentime she might as well be a figment of the mcs mind. I wish she had more involvement in the story, maybe if she were manipulating the mc in some way or had any interaction with her family, I really don't understand why she's even here and this game is supposed to be about her.
That all being said, I will buy the next game for HazeDenki whatever that may be, with the talent working on this game it's surprising I really didn't love it.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

the sister is pretty much just a plot device, not even bordering on a Character. she kind of just exists to baby the MC. quite short game and really would have been stronger with more content. if i wasn't also a pretentious writer i probably wouldn't have liked this game nearly as much. can be incredibly hard to figure out who's speaking because the game doesn't have anything to visually indicate who's speaking other than an occasional sprite change. no indication of how to save/load/quit unless you decide to mouse up to the top of the window and lo and behold, options appear. game also doesn't have vsync and in a visual novel like this where text is constantly moving up the screen, the screen tearing becomes pretty painful to look at.
honestly i was kind of disappointed by this game but i suppose trying to make another game after the bombastic success that was NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE and also having that games publisher steal the franchise from you and getting kicked off the production team of the anime so you don't get a single cent of the money from its broadcasting... would make creating something new a rather high-pressure and tricky ordeal.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tSister Other Paranoia really wants you to write. It wants you to write so bad. It wants you to write something where you really try. It really really wants you to write, and it wants you to not be miserable about it, but it would choose the former over the latter. Once I've played more, I will add more to this review, but how desperately this game cries out for you to also create has immediately struck me.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
