F to my vampire hunting brothers and sisters who didn't make it to see the franchise get resurrected. I hope this means we eventually get a 1999 Demon Castle War game starring Julius Belmont.

Launch the game.
Switch your refresh rate back to whatever you want after the game launches.
And DO NOT turn OFF Vsync or the game will not launch again.

Yes, it’s definitely a Castlevania homage (though the music is the only thing I could criticize). A well-deserved return for the series, with modern gameplay that aims to attract new generations and offer a bit of nostalgia to veterans. \n\t\t\t\t\tMy personal game of the year, I played through the entire game, getting all endings and 95% completion the day it launched and honestly, after over a decade without a 2d Castlevania, or a particularly stellar Castlevania game in general, this game is exactly what I hoped it would be there's goods and bads though, as with everything
Note: Please don't pay too much attention to people saying it "isn't a real castlevania game", or anything of that sort. It's an unfair and honestly false comment for the game. It is still castlevania, and that spirit is still very clearly there. The game just has some changes in direction and new ideas from modern games in its genre, rather then just sticking to the ideas they used pre 2010. This is still Castlevania, its just reimagined with new ideas!

Pros:
- the music, voice acting, and level design are fantastic. The hand drawn art is absolutely beautiful and gives me a vibe of how gaming used to be, very heavily giving off the same vibes I got from Symphony of the Night all those years ago
- The controls are (mostly) fluid, with a lot expression that you can do when you really set in and get comfortable
- All of the weapon types feel great to use and there's a lot of uniqueness in the playstyles you can have with them, allowing plenty of experimenting to be done
- The enemy and boss design is amazing and shows that the spirit of this franchise is still alive and the creativity behind it is just admirable
- The challenge is (mostly) reasonable and the game feels very much worth the price it costs, not asking too much for something on the shorter end. getting everything done on a first playthrough for me took roughly 14 hours, though I'm a long time speed runner of platforming games, so the average player may take longer
- The obnoxious need to grind if you were progressing too fast, which was a problem in the games big brother SotN, doesn't appear to be present with this game, so nothing seems as tedious or like it overstays its welcome
- The game doesn't baby you, it feels like you are actually being challenged and trusted to figure things out on your own, which is something far too many games these days have forgotten to do
- The character interactions are absolutely amazing, I had plenty of time I spent laughing and getting subtle references from the characters that were all really nice and charming

Cons:
- The controls can be.. finnicky. Holding up while pressing crouch will make you, slide, and that's not the only place where holding up and movement can be finnicky. On top of that, certain targeting mechanics are inconsistent. I found a good amount of frustration from restarting platforming segments just because the targeting system wouldn't work properly
- The game stutters at times, I'm not entirely certain what causes it, and for me it was rare, but it does happen
- The Relics don't really feel like they do anything? Even with the purpose of them being minor things to your character, the majority of them are absolutely useless and never worth using, and the handful that are, demand you constantly going into your menu and swapping them out, especially during boss battles, which can get annoying and feel frustrating. You only have 3 relic slots and a lot of relics do not combine with each other well, causing constant swapping of loadouts at different health values, mana values, and boss times. I swear I spent 20% of my playtime in bosses just swapping out my relics mid fight, which feels really unintuitive
- it IS a little short. For a game coming out in 2026, and is a very well established franchise with a long time running, I expected.. a little bit longer of a runtime? I would say 100% completion, for the average player, takes just as long as SotN, not including time spent grinding in SotN for rare drops, which is quite disappointing, but at least the price isn't 70 dollars, so its forgivable
- There are still annoying bugs, including the targeting issues, certain hitboxes are inconsistent, resulting in certain things feeling unfair. Along with that, some things seem to go through floors, I've found multiple ways already to break the games pathing due to the first ability unlock, which can accidentally break things if you're not careful, though the devs seemed to be pretty careful about it in most locations. Dracula has an attack that can get you stuck in a wall for some reason, and there are other bugs to look out for as well
- The cathedral. In its entirety it should have been fun, but frustrating targeting systems and tight timings make the entire area feel extremely frustrating and like it overstays its welcome. This can be gotten over with some time adjusting to the jank, but overall it was, at least personally, the least enjoyable part of the game by a longshot, and the area boss having hitboxes twice the size of the visual, really doubled down on that problem

There is more I could say, goods and bads, however overall I consider this a 9/10 game and a 10/10 for the series. It has been far too long since this series got a true, top tier game, and despite its flaws, I personally find this game to be one of my favorite games I've played in years, and easily my game of the year, even if it objectively isn't GOTY material
If you enjoy castlevania, or metroidvanias in general, and have patience, this game is 100% worth your time and money. I'm excited for what Konami brings this franchise in the future, and hopefully it keeps improving!

Edit: It IS worth noting the game is lacking things older castlevanias had, this game very clearly focused on the netflix series for its background, and chose to stick with modern metroidvania tropes, rather then calling back to the old roots it was built on. Some people may find this as a con, I find it as a pro and a good change of pace. If you liked the way OLD castlevania was, this game wont give the same exact feel, however the spirit of the franchise is most certainly there.
This game feels like a modern era for this franchise, and while some of the things from old games it left out are most certainly a let down, I think overall it is for the better that things were done the way they were, especially after over a decade of this franchise being, mostly forgotten by the gaming world.
Combat and exploration is faster paced then in those old games, and random drops are not in the game, nor is real inventory item management or healing control. With a more dark souls feeling healing system in its place.
Also, no shop keeper, and a regenerating MP bar rather then those good ol' hearts
It is, at least in my personal opinion, better to go into this game knowing it is castlevania in its world, story, and characters, though the gameplay differs a bit from the past. some roots of it are still there, but if you go into the game expecting Rondo of blood, or Symphony of the Night, the sorrow games, or OoE, you will find disappointment. This game is a fresh take on an old franchise, so expect some differences!\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tthink its incredibly naive of all the fans of the old games to think this game will play entirely like the old games, especially after 18 years and the genre being reinvented several times over. this is a metroidvania. this is a castlevania and it clearly has it at its roots. it has the RPG elements that made castlevania unique, has a fantastic score, has wall chicken, i can't think of anything at this point that would deter me from the game.

had a single black screen when i first tried booting and simply tried rebooting and it fixed it. there are some hitches at some scenes and transitions, but nothing egregious.

the movement feels so damn good and despite several others saying you need to always be parrying, you can get away with using the parry sparingly. just the weapon diversity alone makes me like where the game is going, i think i find use and enjoyment out of each sub-weapon and spell. the exploration and finding secrets is so remarkably satisfying, even in the early sections of the game.

the game feels like it is going to be short, probably around 8-10hrs and that is perfectly fine for this game. i would rather it have snappy movement, captivating visuals, and a nicely wrapped up narrative in 8 hours than extra runtime bog down the game.\t\t\t\t\t

Also to all the "Woke" nonsense people. Castlevania has had Female leads before,

I am absolutely loving the game.

This game ties heavily into season 1 of the Netflix castlevania and is basically a direct sequel to it.

EDIT:
(I am being informed that this is a continuation after the events of castlevania 3, but seeing as a lot of the art work and design are inspire from the Netflix series, I will stand my ground and say that it was a huge point of inspiration for them. Until i I was told otherwise I thought it was a direct sequel and pretty much functions as one aside from the plot point of sypha and Trevor having been cursed in the events prior to the game starting. I hadn't played 3 Just 1 and Simons Quest on the NES)

Right now I am trying hard to think of something negative to say but the best I could do is say that it falls a bit short of SotN for me from the PS1 era.

Soundtrack 8/10 is beautiful. as I am exploring areas of Paris and its surroundings I find myself constantly thinking of how good castlevania music is. I want to shout out specifically the catacombs music here as I know that will be a track I will go back and listen to years from now. It almost reaches SotN levels for me but I still think that sound track was near perfect.

Gameplay. 9/10 The Dead Cells team really put effort into the combat to make it feel fast paced and hard hitting. Loving it so far. Best part is the bosses feel fair. Dont get me wrong I usually get mopped the first time or two I fight a boss, but once I see the pattern It feels fair and I was getting a "Megaman-esque" feeling where you would find that certain weapons and equipment were much more effective against certain bosses. Platforming is tight and super challenging at points and a lot of fun.

Waepons 8/10- There are 7 weapon varieties and they mostly feel unique. I would say 2 feel like they overlap a bit the unique effect of each make them distinct enough. Sword/shield supremacy gang.

Story- ?/10- I haven't finished it yet so I don't want to give a definitive rating. Feels like a 8 so far. Strong characters and presentation compelling plot and great acting.

Graphics 7/10- I really like them but if anything was going to be a turnoff for old school players this may be it. It really tries for that gothic feel, but the brightness of some of the coloring and shading is a bit bright for my tastes, but this is subjective there are some areas that this high stylization pays off in.

Overall 8/10 - If it keeps this strong approach This will end up being in my personal top 3 castlevania games. I highly recommend it. I don't let the haters and outrage culture fool you. You would end up missing a gem.\t\t\t\t\t

**The game has a FREE DEMO. Play it and judge for yourself.** It's representative enough of the full experience to make an informed decision. It took me about 15 minutes with the demo to decide I wanted to buy the full game.

And I'm glad I did.

## What the Game Gets Right

For context, I've never played a Castlevania game before, but I have watched the Netflix series. Coming from that perspective, this feels like a fantastic continuation of the Castlevania experience.

The game absolutely nails the atmosphere I was hoping for. The art direction is excellent, the music complements the setting beautifully, and the overall presentation captures exactly the kind of Castlevania experience I wanted. I would have appreciated slightly more detailed backgrounds and animations, but what's here is already very well executed.

**You can definitely feel the Dead Cells polish.** The movement and combat are fluid, responsive, and satisfying. The whip attacks, in particular, feel surprisingly good. That familiar attention to gameplay detail is immediately apparent.

## Minor Issues and Room for Improvement

**Technical issues and performance:**

- On my first launch, the game remained on a black screen for approximately 15 seconds before displaying a heavily glitched notification about unlocked content from my Midnight Edition. I had to Alt+F4, but it launched normally afterward, and I haven't experienced the issue again.
- In the demo, one of the anti-aliasing options was literally labeled "Untranslatable." A minor localization oversight.
- Frame-rate options are limited to 144 FPS or Unlimited, with no 240 FPS cap. On my system, Unlimited reaches approximately 650 FPS in the menus.
- At 4K with MSAA enabled, I'm seeing approximately 110–115 FPS in-game. Given my hardware (specs attached), I suspect there's room for further optimization.
- Graphics options are extremely limited, with essentially nothing to adjust beyond anti-aliasing. **Native HDR support would also be a welcome addition**, especially given how much the game's art direction and atmosphere could benefit from it.

**Voice acting:**

Trevor Belmont isn't voiced by the same actor from the Netflix series, which is a bit disappointing for someone coming directly from the show. The new actor also sounds a little too British for my taste, particularly given the French origins of the Belmont name and the game's Parisian setting.

The Netflix portrayal struck just the right balance, in my opinion.

## Overall

These are relatively minor criticisms of what has otherwise been an excellent experience so far.

The game looks great, sounds great, feels fantastic to play, and delivers exactly the atmosphere I was hoping for. The Dead Cells influence is clearly a strength, and the overall quality speaks for itself.

**Don't let the negative reviews make the decision for you. There's a free demo, and 15 minutes with it told me more than scrolling through complaints ever could.**

\n\t\t\t\t\tBelmont's Curse doesn't feel a whole lot like the classic entries in the franchise, and that's a good thing because for a series to thrive it needs a fresh face to breath new life into it sometimes. The combat is snappy and fluid like a modern roguelite yet the deliberate exploration and slow map revealing process is still there for a classic Symphony of the Night-esque metroidvania experience.

Fans looking for an experience more along the lines of the core Castlevania games (1-3, Rondo of the Blood etc.) might be a little disappointed. The challenge is there with the bosses and many are quite clever, but the mechanic of simply going back and leveling up or finding the right item to defeat a challenging boss is present and takes some of the sense of reward away for more hardcore fans of the pure platforming entries.

The music isn't from any of the legendary composers of the Castlevanias of old so obviously the soul of the entire game feels a bit different and off, but what's there works and has just enough haunting organ and horror flavor to make the player nostalgic for the gothic hallways of Dracula's castle.

Belmont's Curse is very different, and that may tick some die-hards off, but it's also very good as a metroidvania of its own. Recommended.

Castlevania: Belmont's Curse is overall an incredible game, an easy 9/10. It looks beautiful, the level design is great and it's pretty big, so you'll have a lot to explore. In terms of it's gameplay the game is close to being one of the best in the franchise, so I don't want to affect it's score and write a negative review, but Evil Empire absolutely failed the release and the game is pretty much in EARLY ACCESS, despite it's price tag.
There is no point in arguing over what the game should've been, because every player has their own view of what a "Castlevania game" is and what it means to them. Instead, I'll write what the game LACKS on release:
- NO NG+ and NO Boss Rush. These things have been in Castlevania 20 years ago, so why is it something that's hard for the devs to make now?
- Jukebox. The game really needs it. The soundtrack of Belmont's Curse is very weird. I don't think I've ever heard an OST that caused such mixed feelings. Half of the songs are great, while the other half makes me want to stich my ears and ask ASADI to never compose music ever again in his life and probably get his head checked, because a mentally healthy composer CAN NOT make THIS soundtrack for a Castlevania game
- I'd love to comment on the enemy variety, but it's hard to rate something that pretty much doesn't exist. You'll see almost all enemies after a few hours of playing the game
- Performance. I, personally, didn't encounter any issues, but judging by the reviews, the game is poorly optimized\t\t\t\t\t

FYI NEW PLAYERS:If you tried the demo and a few minutes in; you didn't like the pace of the game... I highly recommend playing it until you get the Arcane Whip (Early game spoilers here:You have to beat the Fallen [boss] which you can easily do by just wallhold while the Fallen does his corner smash moves and then spam him with main attack/sub weapon, then heal once he flees to the opposite corner) Once you get that it totally changes the feel; once you can whip the rings you are swinging around the map like Spiderman and movement becomes so much faster and so fluid! Seriously it's almost like a different game entirely (maybe I'm overexaggerating a bit but at least it's like playing a different character from the beginning of the game) But if you take anything away from my review on this, truly don't give up on trying it until you get the Arcane Whip unlocked; then make your decision if the game is right for you (thank you for your time this PSA has concluded, now onto my long-winded and rambling "review")

♥♥♥♥♡ - GAMEPLAY:Of course the gameplay is at the heart of it all and I have to say I was so surprised at how much I liked it (believe me I went in a bit skeptical) but I'm giving it full hearts (just a caveat this probably would've been a 3 or 4 but went for 5 once I unlocked the 'Arcane Whip' no joke it makes the experience that much better!)

♥♥♡♡♡ - GRAPHICS:Hear me out on this, I actually think for what it is the graphics/visual style look great... the low score is just how much of a pixel purist I am! So it should honestly be 3 or 4 hearts but just look at "Record of Lodoss War -Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth" for reference of what I was hoping for, sorry ;P

♥♥♥♥♡ - SOUND & MUSIC:Of course it's Castlevania, all they need to do is update all the classic tracks and it's a guaranteed high marks (I will say there are some interesting E.D.M. touches on this, which took me a little bit of playing to get used to but I suppose SOTN did the same thing with rock/metal guitars at the time; adding that modern touch to music that was inspired by the Baroque period is bound to be awesome... it's a proven recipe for success!)

♥♥♥♡♡ - STORY:Of course, I haven't yet scratched the surface of the story and in all honesty Castlevania storyline is often meant to service the gameplay (don't hate but it's always been sidelined to the action) Though, I'm not 100% sure this might have a tie-in with the tv show but I do love the idea that you get to play as Trevor and Sypha's progeny. So Rose is canonically, bad@$$ by blood!

♥♥♥♥♡ - OVERALL:Belmont's Curse has the modern gaming stylings but is clear it's classic roots are strong and in true Castlevaina fashion it adds a new element with the Arcane Whip and Tarot Cards (as well as upgrading weapons and sub-weapons to at least scratch a little bit of that RPG itch) as anyone will tell you, it's no SOTN but in many ways I'm glad it's not; C:BC (sorry abbreviating it there) is a Castlevania title that stands out with a uniqueness but with enough callback to its predecessors. Regardless of what "rose colored glasses" (pun, intended?!!) you wear going into this; Belmont's Curse is an excellent (long-awaited) addition to the Castlevania linage.

Additional thoughts: Castlevania: Belmont's Curse looks and plays excellent, it's exactly what I'd expect from Castlevania title in the current era of gaming (no unfortunately this isn't Symphony of the Night 2, but I don't think it wasn't trying to be... maybe one day, we'll get that- fingers and holy crosses- crossed!) I do think fans both old and new; of the franchise will find something they enjoy from this and things they wish were maybe just a little more Castlevania-y but overall it is a helluva good time and I'm just glad Konami has come to their senses and started caring about their IPs again (here's my wish that they would resurrect Goemon/Mystical Ninja too, shameless plug) there is a nice balance of action and RPG-lite mechanics (again don't go into this thinking your getting SOTN and yes I'm throwing coins in the wishing well for that as well) It's a great addition to series and most of all has me excited to see what they are cooking up next in one of the most iconic videogame legacies of all time!

The rest of this review is thoughts and ramblings of a self-proclaimed "old guard Castlevania fan" please take all of this with a grain of salt or should I say a grain of Vibhuti
(I'll probably edit this part later but sorry in advance for the incoherent madness ahead, I'm typing FAST to be the 1st Steam review, you've been warned) First and for most as my true fan duty, I must point my finger in the air and proclaim that I'm a LIFE LONG Castlevania fan, and when I say life-long I mean that some of my earliest childhood memories are of me and my brother & friends playing these games, so remember I'm as old as the franchise itself (So kids respect your elder millennials! JK #cringe) the gameplay is what I'd expect from a modernized version of Castlevania, dare I say in the age of what we now know as the modern Metroidvania which can also seep into "Soulslike" territory or in this case a combination of both and birthing "Cellslike" sub[sub]genre (folks we are officially in the double-sub genre era and all jokes aside, and against all odds it's grown on me to be honest) and when it comes to graphics I'm a dyed-in-the-wool pixel enthusiast so I have to admit the look of the game was also something that I had to get used to; especially with a game in the Castlevania franchise which in my mind is associated with that incredible pixel art (though I always wish games would give you a "pixel filter" option, like how you can check a box in retro game for "CRT Scanlines", I know I'm waaay over simplifying what would be a total change in the look of the game and not something as easy as switch on/off but one can wish!) I suppose my eyes much rather prefer something akin to Blasphemous than the vector artstyle but I get that there are reasons for creative choices like that (I think it's also tied into the Netflix show too, which is I'm sure was considered when creating the concept art style) a few things I've noticed right off the bat is you can't quite play this one like a classic Castlevania game (even speaking to Symphony of the Night) the enemies (especially the Archers) take a little working through, more like figuring out a puzzle than just mowing your way through bad guys as before and I think that simple yet overarching reason is why many players will mention that it doesn't feel like a Castlevania game (sort of inexplicable thing but I do know what they mean; case in point you probably won't find the underground room of endless mermen in this one, unfortunately but the comboing you could do with the Arcane Whip enemy movement would be insane if it does show up!) and I think that is the single-most reason for that gamefeel, it does change the pacing of what fans expect from a true Castlevania game in someways, which is why the biggest critique you'll probably hear (aside from some "other" things too that have nothing to do with the game imo) ANYWAY- I'll finally end this wild rambling with; yes SOTN is still the greatest Castlevania installment ever made (and probably ever will be) it's a dragon Konami's been chasing ever since and I don't think they'll ever be able to catch again; it was the perfect game at the perfect time, lightning in a bottle in the truest sense but it grandfathered in so much of what we know today as the beloved "Metriodvania" and of course Belmont's Curse owes its identity to it. Regardless of if a game in the series can ever reach the pinnacle that was Symphony of the Night, I'm just glad Castlevania lives on!\t\t\t\t\t

Doesn't seem like a bad game, it runs fine for me, although there are some stutters but they never effect the gameplay. Graphics also look pretty nice. The game just kind of feels generic to me. It just takes more and more for a game to interest me anymore and I don't think this game will do it. The music feels VERY generic, to the point that I'm already listening to a podcast after less than an hour. The combat also doesn't feel that great. Not sure if I will be giving it much time\t\t\t\t\t

Beautiful game, wish there was more gameplay with new game plus or boss rush.

Game time says I have 17 hours with 100% completion, but honestly it felt like I did 3+ hours of back tracking. Thankfully the game made it easy to check if you're missing an item or secret with the map (sections show gold/yellow if complete). I played the game blind on release and there weren't any guides up by the time I was playing, so having that is a big QOL for me.

I'm not sure if they said it in game early on or maybe I wasn't reading properly, but I learned at the last few hours of the game that you can teleport between save points. Idk if that was from the side quest but I was angry at myself because I used the ferry and also ran all the way across maps just to get some stuff back. (I did that tarot last AGHHH)

I'm only missing the "finish the game in less than 4 hours" left, I hated doing this with Ori lmao. I'm gonna miss all the skills for traversal doing this.

A lot of you will notice the reviews here have 1-2 hours of gameplay complaining there isn't a lot of exploration or variety in combat, I'm telling you that the "fight 3 bosses" part is just the prologue of the game, and it opens up to a lot of things right after. More weapons (there's 6 types), enemies, items, side quests, etc. There's a few puzzles and a lot of platforming when you get the traversal stuff.

I'm a big fan of the animation, voice acting, story, and gameplay of it. As for performance I haven't had issues with default settings on both PC and steamdeck, although the transition between cutscenes/dialogue to gameplay stutters a bit before it stabilizes again.

The controls do be clunky tho. The traversal whip needs to you to point exactly towards the ring you want to latch on so rip mouse players I guess. The combat is good when there's a few enemies but the amount of projectiles and stuff exploding at the screen is kinda overwhelming my brain that it ends up becoming a button masher instead of something a bit more tactical.

Do play further than the first 3 bosses, IMO it does get better past that. I'm casually playing it with 6 hours of play time at 49% total progress, will probably update the review again once I finish the game.\t\t\t\t\t

Combat is smooth, exploration is fantastic, and the balance of challenge and difficulty is done very well. MKB controls for the whip could be slightly better, but it is a small and niche gripe.

And graphically and stylistically, the game looks absolutely fantastic! Another great example for developers that to make an awesome Metroidvania, you do not have to make it in a retro-pixelated style!\t\t\t\t\t
