\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tlet me preface by saying that i am a huge, huge aooni fan. i've played every version of the original game, i've read through what's available of the light novels in english, i've become a megafan of noprops' extended body of work, it's impacted my life in ways few other works of art have.
with all of that being said, my expectations going into this release were exceptionally low.
the steam releases for the aooni series have been dreadful; aooni (2024) was a subpar remake based on a less subpar japanese-exclusive mobile remake that buffed random chases to the point where the experience was noticably worse than noprops' original incarnation, the horror of blueberry onsen exacerbated the random chase issue to the point where certain areas in the game feel cheap, absolute fear was a bland experience with monotonous puzzles and very little actual substance, slit mouth woman ended up being the only aooni product i've ever refunded as it's presentation was terrible and it's gameplay was somehow worse, and forbidden ground, despite being a welcome shift in gameplay, was slow, uninteresting, and plagued with various ai generated assets that made the game feel hacked together with little purpose or thought.
the steam remake of aooni 2 opts not to follow in this line of egregious steam releases and instead chooses to set the bar even lower, making the same mistakes as every other steam release and then some.
for starters, not great to see a grammatical error in the title of the game, forgoing the use of a space to seperate "aooni" and "2". this already tipped me off when the game was announced that litmus and game studio are completely uninterested in actually listening to feedback, as the use of machine translation in place of an actual translation team has been a vastly echoed complaint amongst the english-speaking community. i'd be willing to be more forgiving if there wasn't so much money being pumped into this series and if the mistake wasn't on the title of the game. incredibly disappointing out the gate and i haven't even started on the game itself.
moving on, random chases are at the standard set by blueberry onsen, becoming far to abundent to feel frightening or engaging at the expense of the game's pacing and atmosphere with several spawn locations making zero sense at all. many times, the aooni would spawn in the centre of the room in the direction i'm heading as a cheap beginners trap, sacrificing not only the experience for the player but also the design ideals of the original, with the aooni walking in through doorways to make the environment feel more realistic and tense. it feels deliberately done to subvert game design expectations, but instead of being for any valid point or reason, it's done for what i can only assume is to get a reaction out of japanese youtubers or streamers who surely must absolutely love this kind of treatment out of some regional masochism i'm too australian to comprehend, otherwise it would of been fixed between onsen and now. it's only gotten worse.
this may also be me, i haven't actually done anything to confirm this, it's just a hunch at the moment, but the game studio aooni releases feel so sluggish compared to the original games, for what i can only assume is to get people to play the super speed modes. if that's true, and not just some psychosis induced from staring at the abysmal walking animations these games use, i would hate to know that somewhere out there is a game designer who thinks himself competent enough to work in the industry that would purposefully make a 2D top-down horror puzzle game made in rpg maker any slower than it needs to be.
moving on from gameplay, i want to note the game's presentation. it's horrific.
not horrifying, as a horror game should be, horrific.
much of the art assets are ported over from the original mobile release with little changed. this would be fine if those art assets weren't horribly compressed to be able to fit on a mid 2010s smartphone. a mainline release in one of the biggest j-horror franchises ever, one big enough to have collaborated with other giants such as ring and ju-on, one famous enough to be on branding across japan to this day almost 20 years since its inception--has noticeable .jpeg artificating on it's art assets. in 2026.
and that's not even the worst of it.
a while back, i was able to find the decompiled assets for aooni (2024). in the graphics folder, i had found what had seemingly been a leftover from redrawing noprops' original artwork for the remake--a spritesheet of fuwatty without its arms. seeing as it was the only noticeable scrapped or otherwise unused content i could find within the files, it stayed in my memory bank as little more than a fun fact. i haven't had the opportunity of searching through blueberry onsen's decompiled assets, but be as it may, fuwatty appeared regular as always, arms intact.
imagine how i felt, seeing fuwatty appear for the first time in this game, no reveal or anything, just spawning almost directly infront of me in the doorway i was walking towards with little time to react, standing on full display--armless. i've played the mobile original, his arms are intact there as they should be. why are his arms missing in the steam release? there's no functional differences between fuwatty in this game and any other game it's appeared in, surely, had i not known the contents of the aooni (2024) decomp, i would've chalked it up to a meaningless, arbitrary choice made to change the design of one of the series' mascots out of the blue or some bizarre mandela effect that lead me to believe fuwatty's arms were there as per standard regulation in the original mobile release when in reality they weren't, maybe even that this specific fuwatty variation was a new addition made to enhance the experience somehow. but once it caught me, as chase monsters tend to do when placed 3 feet infront of the player, as if confirming my deliberately worst suspicion, the game over graphic showing the blueberry-coloured giant that had won one over on me depicted fuwatty as usual, arms and all. that's when it clicked. somehow, throughout the entire chain of designers, developers, artists, playtesters, of which the credits are proud to let you know there were plenty of, not one noticed or cared enough to ammend that they had used an unfinished/placeholder asset. not of something mundane like a chair in one map or a singular line of dialogue, the design of one of the series primary antagonists. one they parade around on t-shirts and collectable nicknacks, one that game studio have used for 3 games in a row, one of which even required the creation of all new assets featuring it in a large tank, one that litmus themselves feature on the front page of their website alongside the aooni. if you somehow hadn't picked it up before this point in the review, we have officially hit a new low. the bar is beneath hell at this point.
with that issue concluded, as a footnote, i'd also like to mention squatoni's walking animation being comprised of it's standing sprite from aooni 3.0 with little legs drawn walking, no swining arms or headbobbing at all, as if it didn't already have a servicable walking animation to begin with, and the 4th dimensional aooni sprite sheet gave up on fitting the game's art direction at all and opted instead on just porting over its sprite sheet from the mobile titles, weird purple side-facing head and all, as if the effect isn't achieved by just using azpainter's waveform deformation filter--something i somehow know better than people who allegedly have contact with noprops.
a believe i've talked in well enough detail about my issues with the base game, so let's move on to its substitute for the alternate scenarios (that have never been released in english by the way), the seaside school scenario.

All I want is to beat it in under two hours so I can refund it because Litmus is absolutely out of their minds if they think eight dollars is appropriate for this dumpster garbage and that's ON SALE!! The stupid Oni gacha is completely missing too by the way, which it's not like anybody'll miss it but this game is TEN DOLLARS. The puzzles make absolutely 0 sense to the point where it punishes you for even trying to think logically about anything. You actually can't go more than a few minutes without some stupid chase hindering you from progressing, and when you attempt to progress again, there goes another chase. Everything about this game was a complete let down and does not deserve a "2" next to it's name.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I was already not a fan of Aooni2 mobile version, and to be fair this game does make it "better", it fixes a lot of the bugs and gets rid of the stupid masks that are just there to get people to watch ads and give them money. And I appreciate that severely, the main game does improve on the original version and overall makes it better than the original mobile version.
Even if did improve on that which makes it "objectively" better, it doesn't matter that much because aside from that, the game is basically the same, and I HATE how the original main game goes. The map is WAY too big, which in turn makes it have way too much dead space with like one item and thats it. It is especially glaring when a lot of the rooms start to feel the same, and you start to get lost not knowing where to go. Not to mention the ABUNDANCE of Aooni random chase moments, they have not learnt their lesson at all with Blueberry Onsen as they continue to spawn very frequently in the game giving you as little as 20 seconds before another chase begins. It was a problem in the original game and its still a problem now.
Also, as a remake, it is just not worth it. Maybe for the improved controls but thats it. And besides, as of now, this game is actually LACKING in content, as all of the other scenarios that the original game has are absent in this version. We could have had a Mika, Takeshi, Takuro and Teacher scenario added into this and it would have made the game WAY better! But no, we instead need game speed x17! Because we ALL love that mode, right?
Instead we got a brand new scenario and a secret ending, sounds fun right? Well no. The secret ending is absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to obtain, having to interact with three random pots in the entire game with no hints at all. Only for the Secret ending be something that could have easily been done with the scenarios in the Original version.

As for the new scenario. Its mid as hell, the gameplay is fine i guess? The challenges are trial and error, at least for the gym one, but they aren't super horrible. The boss fight however is clear evidence that the developers either dont properly play test these games, or that they are super cracked at video games and they expect us to be the same. There are too many gimmicks the Squid Oni, or BB, has that are just annoying to deal with, especially the tentacles that appear without warning the second you walk towards a path they clearly dont want you to take as they act as blockage. If they clearly dont want you to go that way, why even give us the illusion that we can? Just make the tentacles appear from the start so we know where those are! I spent a good 30 minutes on the boss fight getting increasingly more and more annoyed with it to the point that when I beat it I didn't even celebrate, I just stared at my screen.
And ANOTHER thing that is probably the most irritating element in this game. Just how much they like to "Vague post" about SO many elements. "Ai knows Hiroshis name?" It is only acknowledged by Hiroshi once and never again, "Ai has some relation to the Squid Oni?" It is referenced once in the game and probably never again as they love to reset Ai's entire character every entry. "The teacher is actually alive and seems to work with the Aoonis?" Not only do we get to know this in the original Teacher Scenario, but also she has a total of 3 lines of dialogue for the secret ending that doesn't feel rewarding at all.
This is a problem that has stemmed even back in the 2024 Aooni remake, all of these games feel like set up games that are missing the conclusion and it sucks a lot because when it DOESN'T try and be vague and set up a possible sequel to that game that will never come and ACTUALLY goes ahead and gives us proper information, it can be really interesting! Like both the special scene with Ai in the post-credits scene AND the Principal's notes in the Seaside School scenario give us a lot to think about both on the Squid Oni and what's the relation that they have between them and Ai, who seems to be more evil than we think.
I really hope that they do stop feeding us set ups and finally give us major reveals in Aooni3 Remake or whatever the next entry they're inclined to do because I really do like the franchise, honestly. But the way its being handled, both in gameplay and in story, is not to my taste at all.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The story and gameplay is pretty much exactly like the original Aooni but this time with a new character known as "Teacher" who followed the main cast into the abandoned school, though she doesn't really do much, you see her a grand total of about 5 times if I recall, which kind of sucks since you only get to see some minor development of her character in the secret ending of the main story.
A lot of people are upset that this port didn't get the alternative character scenarios that the mobile version had, but after doing some research the English mobile port never actually had these so I'm fine missing out on them, but having them added in a future update or DLC would be pretty cool, hopefully the devs see the reviews and consider adding them.
The random chases are retained in the sequel/alternate universe of Aooni2 and they felt toned down compared to Aooni but maybe that was just me being lucky? I still stand by my statement of it being the Oni roaming around the school and wanting improved ai like in the previous versions of the original game maker version.
Unlike in Blueberry Onsen but like in Aooni, you cannot save anyone here, which is what the mobile version was like originally anyway so that doesn't bother me too much.
Like in both games, we encounter the may other types of Onis but of course they're saved for the final chase and them opening the cage, which is the same gripe I had in Blueberry Onsen, I really wish they would actually use the other Onis more than just the original and Fuwatti, I think it gets to a point where reusing the same two Onis from the first game gets tiring, though I don't really blame them in a way as this was a direct sequel at the time on a mobile device so maybe some stuff had to be cut down.
Unlike the mobile port of Aooni2, there are no cosmetic changes to your Oni which again, I'm completely fine with as it was just a filler/cosmetic thing to add for the mobile version, honestly having it added in a later update wouldn't change much as the only way to get Blue Coins (the currency to get skins) are done via ads/sharing your gameplay, which Steam does not allow by their ToS.
Unlike the base game, you can rescue your friends here! I always rescued all three of them during my grand total of two runs (first and deathless) and thankfully they're pretty simple to rescue unlike in Blueberry Onsen which required you to get specific items and save a ton, I have no clue what happens when you only save a specific set of friends but I assume it's just some extra ending dialogue before the credits roll. There's a bonus ending with Ai if you collect all of her items in the blue rooms, there's three in total and you will know if you trigger her cutscene by her unique dialogue if you did collect all three items.
Now time for the final fight, this one I surprisingly struggled with, simply due to human error and obviously it being a new boss 'n' all. This boss is what I call "Kraken Oni", which you have to press two buttons and run away from just like in Episode: The Untold, though this did feel a bit more punishing in my opinion. Very often I would get caught by the finger tentacles (yes that's what they looked like) and mini Kraken Onis due to being unable to react quickly enough to the pre-set tiles and requiring you to go the longer routes as the Kraken Oni doesn't want to go down easily.
If you were able to get all of Ai's items, a extra cutscene will play after the credits of Ai summoning the Kraken Oni and sinking a ship in the distance, maybe this is the plot linkage between Aooni3 as you start on a boat in that game? but who knows if it'll be explained in an extra mode/DLC in the hopeful eventual port of Aooni3.
Like the other Aooni ports, getting 100% achievements on this was great and fun, every time I rescued a specific set of friends I also decided to save Ai while I was at it so in every timeline I saved her. Though I would say the canonical ending is where everyone is saved, including her. Here's some that stood out to me the most:

Base Game
Unlike Aooni The Horror of Blueberry Onsen, I actually bought and played Aooni2 on day one and just like Blueberry Onsen, I really enjoyed Aooni2 and I'm very glad that the developers finally ported it to Steam, now all we need Aooni3 and AooniX.The story and gameplay is pretty much exactly like the original Aooni but this time with a new character known as "Teacher" who followed the main cast into the abandoned school, though she doesn't really do much, you see her a grand total of about 5 times if I recall, which kind of sucks since you only get to see some minor development of her character in the secret ending of the main story.
A lot of people are upset that this port didn't get the alternative character scenarios that the mobile version had, but after doing some research the English mobile port never actually had these so I'm fine missing out on them, but having them added in a future update or DLC would be pretty cool, hopefully the devs see the reviews and consider adding them.
The random chases are retained in the sequel/alternate universe of Aooni2 and they felt toned down compared to Aooni but maybe that was just me being lucky? I still stand by my statement of it being the Oni roaming around the school and wanting improved ai like in the previous versions of the original game maker version.
Unlike in Blueberry Onsen but like in Aooni, you cannot save anyone here, which is what the mobile version was like originally anyway so that doesn't bother me too much.
Like in both games, we encounter the may other types of Onis but of course they're saved for the final chase and them opening the cage, which is the same gripe I had in Blueberry Onsen, I really wish they would actually use the other Onis more than just the original and Fuwatti, I think it gets to a point where reusing the same two Onis from the first game gets tiring, though I don't really blame them in a way as this was a direct sequel at the time on a mobile device so maybe some stuff had to be cut down.

Seaside School is the extra story we get like we did for Ai in the first Aooni, this explores more on Ais story and shows off a new boss Oni! - Secret - For this you have to obtain the Red Orb, Blue Orb and Doll Head. I would recommend this guide on where to get them, it's in Korean but it contains pictures so it's easier to understand.
- Sharp Mind - Just like with the first Ao Oni game, create two saves and swap between them. Some or all answers are randomised so if you make a mistake just go to the save you didn't make a mistake from and save over the other save.
- In the Morning Glow - Rescuing all three of your friends is super easy, each of the blue rooms contain items that can be used to rescue each of them.
- Something Special - The three items are obtained in the gym, lab and art blue rooms. The items are very easy to find due to them glinting, however the one in the art room can be difficult due to it being dark but like the others it also glints so take your time on finding it, you only get one chance before the room becomes inaccessible.
- Complete Avoidance/Perfect Avoidance- Just like this and the first Aooni, save and swap.
- Traces of a Researcher - I had to watch a guide for this simply because a couple of them aren't super obvious to find, I used this guide for the missing pages.
Ending
