Some may certainly prefer the quicker, more streamlined experience of the original. For example and without spoiling anything except what you do in the first zone, in the original there is nothing extra to do in the mines except find a key and unlock a chest, but here in the sequel, in the first zone, extra activities include opening a chest with the golden key, returning two turkeys to a guy who asks you, fighting a kind of mini-boss (I call this an extra task because to not fight him is to evade him), and at least one more secret objective I won't spoil, there could be even more for all I know. The whole sequel seems like this. I've only beaten it once, and whenever I am in the later, less familiar zones, there seems to be all kind esoteric secrecy going on I can't understand and have to to try and rush through because it's also dangerous to hang around in. Some will be glad to read this, and some may be reading this and feeling off-put. Myself, I enjoy how much content there seems to be, but I don't have faith that I'll be able to understand how to experience it all without looking up how. Others may instead be drawn to wanting to figure it all out on their own. When it comes to the increased difficulty (at least in my opinion), only be comparison to the original, this comes broadly from missteps and a failure to go slow and carefully being much more punishing. Instead of praising or criticising the game, I've simply wrote up my impressions of it all as a new player (I've only beaten it once after all). Sure, it looks cute, but make no mistake, this game is hard as balls, requiring pixel perfect jumps, split second timing, and is best played if you are an actual psychic with precognition of what fresh hell is coming next.  And to top it off, what little progress I had made on Steam in more than 120 hours randomly deleted itself last night.  This game just seems to find new ways to cause me intense pain. Unless, of course, there will be Spelunky 3. Fast-paced, highly addictive and super fun platformer game. There is basically zero meta progression, all that matters is knowledge and skill. You can achieve the hardest ending in your very first run, but you won't. The game is pretty difficult, punishing and a lot of the times might feel unfair, but in time you'll realise that it was always (almost :3) your fault and you could have prevented the loss. Spelunky 2 provides an insanely hard and cool challenge with its special ending testing your concentration and endurance, rewarding you with unique and beautiful trophy every time you do it. If you're looking for a greater challenge to test your limits this is the game. difficult game I have ever played. I've beaten Ninja Gaiden, NES and XBOX versions, and I thought THAT was hard, but Derek said no son, those are easy hours. Shot by a keeper, nommed by a ghost, fell into spikes, dissolved in lava, rolled over by a lizard boy, I see death behind my eyes when I sleep, then I wake up and do it some more. Took me like 100 hours to kill Tiamat, it'll likely take me more to reach cosmic ocean, and I honestly don't know if I'll ever hit 7-99. BUT, I had a damn good time, almost the whole time. The platforming is solid to its core, so much control is put into the player's hand that it occasionally feels like an immersive sim, giving you multiple ways to complete objectives. Any ounce of progress feels immensely satisfying, Derek's &quot;spiky&quot; design at play. The world lives, despite initially giving the impression of a child's toy. I played this casually for years, same with the first, assuming I'd never beat it and that it was largely unfair, but will admit I was wrong. The game is perfectly fair, it just expects a lot out of you.
