\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tMost of the other reviews are all praising the game's incredibly fine tuned near perfected gameplay that caters to both casual and very competitive players perfectly which is all 100% true and the devs are more than deserving of all the praise for accomplishing that, but I wanted to talk a little about something that others aren't entirely mentioning.
It's incredibly rare to come across something that truly resonates with what it's presenting, I've never seen someone who truly "gets" megastructures like level designers behind VHOLUME have. You could see fragments of their incredible level design from their previous game STRAFTAT but the map sizes were limited by it being an arena shooter, the sense of scale the devs are able to convey is much more clear in their first game BABBDI, but VHOLUME is where they truly showed just how much they are capable of. The sense of vastness they've accomplished in the levels is something I've very rarely seen done right, it gave me the same feeling I got from reading Tsutomu Nihei's works for the first time. The sheer unimaginable scale of the infra you're presented with to run around in is something that I really couldn't do justice properly putting it into words, but it's something that needs to be experienced to understand even a little bit. Every level is a masterfully made fragment that's part of a colossal world that very few can imagine, an unimaginably lonely civilization with a few bits and pieces left behind if you can find them.
Beyond that the thing I appreciate the most about VHOLUME is the soundtrack, you'd think the obvious music choice for a game like this is high energy fast paced drum & bass/breakbeats like what the devs did for STRAFTAT, but they instead chose ambient tracks which is in huge part why the incredible level design hit me much harder than anything else I've ever played before. As someone who listens to ambient music nearly all the damn time this is probably the most unexpected surprise I've ever seen out of a game like this and I've already got many new favorite tracks out of it. I'm sure many people after the first or second playthrough will end up muting the music for this game to play their own tracks to really "lock in" when chasing the leaderboards which I find very unfortunate since I'm presuming every track in the game is tailor made for each level it accompanies. Alongside the ambient sound design in each level it all adds up to a sound presentation that is so incredibly rare to find in games that it'll always immediately stand out to someone like me. The last game I can recall that matched this kind of sound experience was Playdead's INSIDE, something special like this can only come from people who truly understand the medium they're trying to convey, and the devs and album artists for VHOLUME absolutely nailed it.
If you like ambient music, please give the devs and 1000 Eyes extra support by buying the soundtrack, it's so very rare to see ambient tracks like these make it to most games.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI've never been a huge fan of "movement/runner" games, but I'm a huge fan of Babbdi and Straftat. When i saw this was releasing I wasn't sure I was going to like it, but for all the fun this team has brought me in the past, I'd feel stupid not supporting this esp. with their track record of workshop/community support. I was very pleasantly surprised. This game is so relaxing, but at the same time has a real competitive aspect. I could spend hours just exploring and taking screenshots, while my friend found themselves locked-in on competing with the leaderboard. The movement is fun and slick, the environments are well designed and awe-inspiring, there is community map support and multiplayer. It really clicked with me when I had an open lobby fill up and all of us are just running around, parkouring the dystopia like some shared dream-state, like children running around the rooftops of decayed cities, making the best of the apocalypse. If you're on the fence about it, it's a great movement/runner game, as well as a walking sim and I'm real glad I gave it a chance because it impressed.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

For anyone who loves going fast in games, or great atmosphere and feeling small in large abstract concrete spaces, this is a must-play. (Especially for the way-too-cheap price!)
I really love it. So much, in fact, that I am giving this review a bit early, having "only" finished the main campaign (with decent times), because I want to help put the game on the map for people. Should my opinion change, I will edit this review, but, having sunk 30 hours into the demo of the game already which had only a tenth of the levels of the game, I am quite convinced that I won't need to do that.
So, in short: Indie masterpiece!
For a bit of a longer evaluation, keep reading. I will go through the different aspects and share my thoughts in a more nuanced way.
The only issues I have found are quite minor. Sometimes, your speed behaves in ways that are not too intuitive for me somehow. Sometimes, slide hopping makes you faster, but sometimes, it doesn't, I think. Sometimes, miniscule changes in where you are looking can result in dramatic changes in speed. But all of these things are stuff that already requires you to be familiar with the core mechanics to such an extent that you should be able to figure out what you are doing wrong in theory - I just haven't yet - so this is barely a complaint worth noting.
I also want to say a few words on the multiplayer: You can host a multiplayer session on any level and you can play it in parallel, running at your own pace and setting your personal best, which will be shown to everyone in the lobby. It's not a traditional race though, which may be an issue for some people, although nothing prevents you from just racing on your own terms.
This means you can play through the game in a quasi-coop (together, but not cooperating, lol) which makes it quite the good hang-out game. In the demo, my experience was also pretty positive, with people frequently chatting and willing to help out with explaining how to best do certain things in the game.
I think it's cool! There are some corners of the maps which have this vibe of "You weren't supposed to look over here" but somehow, even that helps in furthering the vibe of the game. I think art is excellent.
As an addition, the levels sometimes naturally flow into each other, and sometimes are just outright random, I think. While it makes sense to run around between apartments, where I am told "Maybe you can go through the sewers" and then end up in the sewers, it does not make sense to be in the middle of the ocean in some scrapyard all of the sudden (?). But maybe I just don't get it yet, and a more thorough investigation of the game's contents (and NPC dialogues) would enlighten me. As it stands, do not expect anything detailed.

As the steampage surely already told you, Vholume is a first person platforming/parkour game, involving running, jumping, wall-running and sliding through a (mostly) concrete world. I believe it manages to be both easy-to-learn and hard-to-master, with most levels being beatable through chaining your different movement options together to get to the goal. If you want to get there quickly though, you will soon discover all sorts of marvelous options to do so: Smart routing skipping long ways around a pit, bouncing from wall to wall in rapid succession, landing in a slide only to immediately jump again, all slowly building up your speed until you hit mach 2... and consequently hit your head on the concrete. For me, it is fun to be fast. For me, it is fun to retry a level again and again, trying to hit a chain of precise jumps, slowly improving my personal best. I love concrete super structures, and vholume is full of them. The world is a sprawling city with architecture not precisely fitting a certain style (except for brutalism I guess). These geometric structures are combined with really good lighting and sometimes long sightlines, showing off impressive scenery. Other than that, the vibe of the game is a bit surreal, the city hardly traversible for the average person, but apparently still housing people. There are also a few levels that are just abstract arrangements of geometry (more on that later though). The NPCs you can find are also ugly (complimentary), which works well to never quite make you feel at home anywhere. I think it's cool! There are some corners of the maps which have this vibe of "You weren't supposed to look over here" but somehow, even that helps in furthering the vibe of the game. I think art is excellent.
Music
What we have here is mostly soft electronic ambience music, so it's not like you are getting high octane bangers blasted into your ears or anything like that, but, again, this helps in furthering the atmosphere of the game. It is somewhat melancholic, but also calm. While hunting for PBs, you will be oddly relaxed through this, which is very cool to me! I also found (most) tracks to not be grading even during long playsessions on the same map. Story
Now, the story is where I would say I might be the most "disappointed" right now. The store page suggests that there may be something more concrete (haha) here, but in my playthrough so far, I can barely make out the most basic of plot details. This isn't necessarily bad, just not what I expected when promised a "bureaucratic quest". The story is mostly hinted at through dialogue with NPCs you can talk to (although you will have to find them, and I only got half of them, so maybe that is the problem here? But even then, shouldn't I still know what's going on?). They tell you stuff, some of it cryptic and some of it satiric, but it is all not particularly dense. Had I not read the store page, I would have been confused why one of the guys is calling me Robert at the end of the game, and I would have been confused why I am running from counter to counter to get permits for something. Conclusion
Vholume is an excellent game to go fast and have fun with. This is combined with a unique aesthetic and a pleasant ambient soundtrack, making for atmospheric and surreal vibes, although the story remains a mystery to me. This game initially came under my radar, as one of the creators of it, Léonard Lemaitre, worked on STRAFTAT, which is a superb arena shooter. Now that it's out, it looks cool, and my Twitter timeline won't stop talking about it, I decided to give it a try.
Vholume is a first-person parkour game about traversing desolate, atmospheric landscapes. Or maybe ignoring all of that and going as fast as possible?
I'm not sure... and I'm not exactly certain the devs know either.
The first level of the game takes place in back alleys of a city that starts and ends in the same spot, sort of looping indefinitely. It reminds me a lot of the Titanfall 2 tutorial. It's a fantastic playground that teaches you the basics of the movement and allows you to immediately learn the intricacies of the slide-jump-wall tech, which is basically the main way to gain speed.
Once a level is over, you are presented with a global leaderboard for it, your own time, and medals which you either already obtained or can obtain depending on the completion speed. This signals to me that this is a speedrun game. A game where you want to complete the level as quickly as possible, retaining as much momentum as you possibly can throughout it. I had a ton of fun replaying the first level, resulting in better and better times.
But from the very next level, something changes. You go through it as you did in the previous one, until you reach.... stairs? Around 15 seconds into the level, you are met with a staircase going up, which completely kills your momentum. You can't really go over them either as it's a very narrow hallway with a low ceiling.
I thought it was a weird decision, but I disregarded it and kept going.
The following levels continue this tradition, with the level design getting weirder and more complex. Most of the levels will become an upwards journey; You will be required to constantly jump to higher vantage points and all the structural elements themselves will be titled upwards. Small patches of debris might block your wallrun and cause frustration instead of simply adding to the storytelling.
While some levels will offer a pleasant respite, simply allowing you to play the fast parkour game, others become just borderline unplayable, like the miserable "vestiges". It's a collection of broken-down columns, that are not only extremely confusing to traverse, but also very ugly and uninspired visually. I don't think I should ever be asking myself "Where do I go now?" in a game like this.
At this point, I have completely given up on the speedrun aspect of the game and decided to submerge myself in the atmosphere of the game, taking it in as a slightly faster walking simulator, and I have enjoyed that part way more.
While the brutalist, raw concrete architecture is slowly getting stale by now, the game does offer variety in its presentation. Dream-like, edge-of-the-world views, monumental industrial fans, rusty scaffolding, and structures long forgotten by everyone aside from the flora and fauna are a lonely, but glad sight.
They certainly nailed the eerie atmosphere, especially in terms of music.
The ambience is pushed to its limit when you hear the reversed synths, sombre keys, and submerged bass, as a funereal guitar reverberates through your head, all while the fog smothers your thoughts.
Vholume is not a bad game, it's actually really good in some aspects, but I feel like the developers were kind of split on what type of game they wanted to make. Or I simply don't understand their vision. While the movement system and post level screen incentivizes going fast, the level design and the atmospheric environments tell a different story.

It feels highly rewarding to glide through levels. You have to work at it a bit, but eventually you pick up on certain combos and techs. You will find that the maps reward creative approaches to movement.
Mechanically it is not so difficult as I feared it would be. It's pretty accessible to people (me) who don't play a lot of technical parkour games/surf etc. It's not too complicated but it's clear that the skill ceiling goes very high. There is an amazing flow-state/video game high that you enter as you try to complete the time trials.

VHOLUME is a game all about its excellent feeling controls and great map design, the story is basically non-existant beyond what's already been writen on the store page. You can find NPCs hidding in weird places but in true Lemaitre fashion, they only speak in cliped nonsense that is more about establishing the vibes than anything else.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tVholume is a meditative and surreal experience that emphasizes momentum while simultaneously surrounding the player with compelling visuals that enticed me to stop and breath in the atmosphere. Its gameplay consists of fast, floaty parkour which at terminal velocity finds a player practically bouncing around the map. Controls are intuitive and it will not be long before one can speed through its levels. There is not a glut of mechanics, you will mostly be jumping, sliding, and wall running as need be. It is a testament to the strength of the level design that these three simple mechanics can carry such an exhilarating gameplay loop.
The genius of this game, however, is in its tone which is simply magnetic. Its soundtrack is dreamily contemplative and its approach to the design of its architecture and npcs is superb. I found myself often leaving the beaten path simply because I wanted to fully explore every corner of each map. For a game that wants you to speed run it, I could not spend enough time making my way towards the finish line. Unfortunately, the game punctuates its levels by stopping gameplay to show you your time and ranking. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed working my way towards gold medaling the levels, but it is immersion breaking to have my flow state constantly interrupted when all I wanted to do was get lost in the games exemplary landscapes.
Vholume’s most interesting levels take place in Potemkin cities that evoke a depressing feeling of solitude. There was a civilization here, it’s gone now. What few characters you do meet are as outlandish as their surroundings. They will share some words with you but will not converse or answer questions you may have. There will occasionally reference a ministry that may have at one point been of some importance, but it seems more a figment of the past than an active force within the game. Rather than fill itself with exposition and plot, Vholume correctly concerns itself with cultivating a particular vibe and in doing so succeeds wildly in creating a world full of mystery that is utterly enrapturing to inhabit. There are abundant secrets and the developers have a clear interest in opening up pathways to community designed levels so that the game can have a life beyond their influence. I look forward to periodically returning to this game just to dip back into its unique world.

Honestly, the fully realized 3D world with brutalistic architecture where you're just seamlessly platforming is a vibe in VR. You're totally immersed and you can just zone out and reach a flow state that is only possible in VR where your audio / visuals senses are completely engulfed by this game world.
You could play this in pancake, but I doubt you would if you could experience it in VR. The only issue was the micro-stutters that I sometimes experienced on my RTX 5090. That really shouldn't happen and most of the time I was getting a steady 90 fps. I'm not sure what was causing those micro-stutters, but it seemed to happen more on the bigger maps.
