I wasn't sold on this initially... I like city builders and roguelikes, but what I like about them are kind of at odds. I like the slow deliberate creativity of a city builder, and the quick progression and challenge of a roguelike. So... Combolands seemed weird.
But for $8 during the Autumn Sale? I've wasted a lot more money on much longer bets. And yeah, I'm happy.
This has the roguelike's steep(ish) learning curve, but the game eschews an overly detailed tutorial in favor of a 'it's a roguelike, failing is the point' approach, which I liked. Though it should be noted I won the first playthrough without much issue, and immediately unlocked the next faction. It was the SECOND (and third) playthroughs that I failed spectacularly. But it has that satisfying level of crunch- I figured out better combos, how to read the maps, etc. I'm now getting to better understand why you'd play factions and how they interact.
On the city builder side... it doesn't really scratch that itch a whole lot. It's about 80% rogue and 20% city. But the 20% are the right pieces. There's no timer, so you can plot and consider the choices. There's interesting layers to this with factions and how they interact... you pick 2 of them per run, and that gives you more than enough depth to be satisfying. The building placements matter a lot, and the theming makes sense, which makes it fun to try. The developers had to draw a line somewhere, and I think they made the right call.
This feels spiritually a bit like when someone makes a 'faster paced' 4x. It's extremely difficult to make them quicker without sacrificing what makes them worth it. Combolands threads the needle as well as it can be. If I'd paid $15 I still would consider it a fair price. For $8 I'm thrilled.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tCombolands is a very enjoyable game to squeeze a quick run into while you’re on a break from work or have some alone time and want something stimulating to play while listening to a podcast, long-form video, or movie. I feel like we’re at a point where anything can become a roguelike deckbuilder if someone is inclined to develop one, and while this one leans into the Balatro school of deckbuilding, it still has its own unique flavor. I’ve seen it described as Balatro x SimCity, but it’s more like Balatro’s score-chasing combined with tile placement and a very SimCity aesthetic. It also borrows the class-mixing of Monster Train, which is a nice cherry on top for variety. You’re not so much running a city as you are piecing together a score generator using tiles.
This is fine, however, because it’s a satisfying puzzle to play out. While I found its balance to be all over the place, and it can very easily be broken without even needing to laser-focus on your selected guilds, there was enough to discover that I enjoyed streaking every guild combination on Difficulty 10 while still finding tricks that pushed my builds into wild territory. I imagine some players will find the game perplexing and even unapproachable with certain guild combinations until they start unlocking some effects that are, in my opinion, extremely game-breaking. Some combinations are so strong that you can tell within the first few milestones that your run is practically unlosable. If you get Spymaster early, you’re going to have a hard time losing, and Ghost paint can often dominate enough to salvage an otherwise lost run.
Overall, the game is a fun little ride that you’ll either click with and try out every guild combination, or bounce off of and go back to hating yourself by spamming A10 runs in Slay the Spire 2 until the next roguelike deckbuilder comes around to draw your attention. Give it a shot, and hopefully you’ll enjoy it!\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tExtremely well made for the most part but I want to point out an issue that I'm noticing with the recent crop of roguelike and particularly balatro inspired games over the past several years and ultimately why I'm going to leave a negative review. If you haven't played a lot of games in this genre or if you've never 100%-ed other games in the genre you will likely find this game to be quite entertaining throughout. However, as someone who has been playing these games for many years and wrung out out all of the challenges in several other modern balatro/roguelikes this game is just far too easy. A lot of devs are getting quite good at designing a very attractive "shell" for these games but the actual difficulty/balance isn't designed for long term play and even when working through to the higher difficulties it never really offers much of a challenge. There's nothing inherently wrong with this, and I understand that the game needs to be designed with newcomers in mind, but its starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth. Seeing this a lot more in the past several years with many well regarded games in the genre.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

In Balatro, I know exactly what I'm planning and building for, whereas in this game I'm just doing whatever makes sense at the time. There's no planning because there's not really any way to build a run intentionally. You'll never reroll the shop more than twice. You'll probably only fill your Heirlooms (Joker Slots) every once in awhile.
Still, it's fun, but I'd love to see the devs spend some time making it a lot clearer what's happening, because that'll allow for infinitely more nuance with the difficulty and scaling.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tCombolands is a very chill and satisfying roguelike game, definitely on the easier end of roguelikes in general. However, I would say that some guilds have an easier time beating Ascension 10 than others.
I love its citybuilding aspect as not only it makes your island look like a very populated city, but it also makes the whole gameplan very strategic in nature, you want to space your building units to be as efficient as they can within their range, and using items such as potions to get the most of your guilds.
In this game you pick two out of seven guilds, and a neutral one for universal buildings such as lampposts and sewers. Each building has its own effects, either passively or when created, removed and more. These effects shape all of the decisions you'll make and you have to work towards the strong aspects of the guilds you just picked. Some guilds have synergies with each other, while some are harder to work together.
As I said before, in terms of balancing, some of the guilds my GOD. They make it incredibly easy to beat ascension 10 without breaking a sweat. The Maritime guild is absurdly easy to setup and hit the target score. The Industrial guild, if you know what you're doing, allows you to rack some absurdly insane points, way beyond the target score. And then for the weaker guilds, Frontier was simply horrible to beat ascension 10 with the other weaker guilds. With Frontier I feel like there is not much to generate a big score other than depending on rare buildings, and even so these rare buildings pale in comparison to the power of rare buildings of other guilds.
Combolands also has some really cool secrets, although they're difficult to unlock. Definitely rewarding, though.

As I said before, in terms of balancing, some of the guilds my GOD. They make it incredibly easy to beat ascension 10 without breaking a sweat. The Maritime guild is absurdly easy to setup and hit the target score. The Industrial guild, if you know what you're doing, allows you to rack some absurdly insane points, way beyond the target score. And then for the weaker guilds, Frontier was simply horrible to beat ascension 10 with the other weaker guilds. With Frontier I feel like there is not much to generate a big score other than depending on rare buildings, and even so these rare buildings pale in comparison to the power of rare buildings of other guilds.
Combolands also has some really cool secrets, although they're difficult to unlock. Definitely rewarding, though.
This game is VERY satisfying once your build CLICKS, it reminds me a lot of Balatro. Very fun game, I hope to see more updates on it soon!\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tIf I'm still going after a few hours on games these days, especially based on an oversaturated concept, I can def recommend to others that enjoy making numbers go up through the means of thoughtful grid placement ala city builders, but the multipliers and "choose the lesser evil on this round" style of modern roguelikes. The information can be a bit sparse at first and I'll admit there's points where it's just more about the symphony of putting a card down and hoping it works out rather than placing through intent, but that part is on me giving into the siren song of numbers.
I think it's really neat how creating a city is represented here as a system of like-minded networks , rather than just stacking up houses and appeasing tax payers. Most city builders "allow" you to play peaceful farmers or woodcutters, but it's you more or less restricting yourself. This game asks you to pick a couple lanes and see them out and it's not just building bigger buildings. I'd love to see a more traditional city builder think like this rather than just trying to mirror modern frameworks, but now we are drifting.

Most of my cool idea's kinda die because I dont get the right buildings multiple weeks in a row even with rerolls. Metaprogression might solve this or maybe its just not the way the game is designed. It also annoyed me with those lucky mayor games. I would like a little more control and a little less rng, but thats me. The content is there. There are like 8 guilds and you play 2 each run. Within each combo there are more than one "engine" so there's like 8*7*3? runs here. Enough content to get your money worth.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
