After the first few zones, you suddenly have half a dozen types of resources to combine and 50 tier 1 monsters whose combinations all yield the same 8 creatures or so. I think the game should either make recipes more accessible or go with a procedural variant model. I think players would prefer to either have a clear path to discovering a defined set of recipes or the ability to make something custom and unique.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I LOVE creature collector games, like, an unhealthy amount, and this one just isn't it.
I was attracted by the design decision to be able to harvest overworld materials like any survival, cram some random stuff into the funne fusion table, get a randomly generated crazy sprite, then smash a couple of those crazy creations together to get a super randomly generated nonsense monster with a bagillion possibilities; but this just wasn't it.
Most of the combinations at the start of the game from the first 8 creatures all fuse into the same thing for whatever reason. The creatures fused also drop their levels back to level 1 so I fused my starter and became instantly weaker cause I thought the combination sprite looked cool, which is was not. It was a gaping claoca on a tuft of fur.
The combat was whatever, pretty shallow at the start for a creature collector/battler, though I'm sure it gets more involved later down the line.
The crafting was already grating an hour into it which is a sad experience. Farm the same wild dudes for goblin bacon or whatever, make a thing, go back out and get more goblin bacon, rinse and repeat; before that gets old I refunded.
The graphics are BEAUTIFUL by the way, the 2,5D was an amazing decision; credit where it's due.
The spritework for the creatures also looks quite good all things considered, though the naming of them is wildly different, some are creative, some are nicknames, and some are general descriptions of the creature you're looking at; seems like they used an LLM to name stuff like Generated Card Games flooding Steam.

I'm sure there is plenty of meat on the bones of this game I didn't get to, but I didn't enjoy the first hour of the game and felt no drive to keep playing unfortunately, your mileage may vary though.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI genuinely think Monster Alchemy is an amazing game. The best way I can describe it is to imagine the early Pokémon games, especially something like Pokémon Red, but with a lot more to do.
You have a similar number of monsters to collect, but instead of just catching them and progressing through gyms, there are so many different systems to interact with. You have the main story, side quests, fusing monsters together, summoning monsters, gathering materials, crafting, and plenty of other things to keep you occupied. There’s a lot of depth to the game, and it’s really easy to get invested in building up your collection and experimenting with different monsters.
That being said, I do think the game can become repetitive at times, especially when it comes to gathering materials.
For example, if I need a specific material, I first have to find out which monster drops it through the Monsterpedia. Then I have to figure out where that monster actually spawns, because the game doesn't currently tell you. After that, I have to repeatedly kill that monster until I get the material I need.
The biggest issue is that even common drops aren't guaranteed. If I'm trying to gather Bones, for example, which are mainly dropped by Goblin Hexers, I might kill two Hexers and get one Bone, or kill three and get two. It can turn what should be a relatively simple material-gathering task into a pretty tedious grind.
I don't think the game needs to completely remove the grind, either. I'd just like to see some quality-of-life improvements that make gathering materials less frustrating. Even something as simple as making common drops 100% guarantee would help tremendously. Another great addition would be adding a map/location section to the Monsterpedia, showing where specific monsters spawn and potentially what times they spawn.
Overall, I really enjoy Monster Alchemy and think it has a ton of potential. The amount of content and different systems is genuinely impressive, and it captures some of that feeling of playing an old Pokémon game while expanding on the formula in a lot of interesting ways. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tOne of the best creature collector games on steam, by far. Not THE best, but one of. I cannot believe this is only early access, as I only encountered very minor bugs during my playthrough and there is SO much content.
Overall rating: 8.5/10
Pros:
- Large, sprawling maps with different interactable environments and small puzzles.
- Super in-depth creature summoning/ variety, cross-breeding (flawed, I will explain later), and decent rarity mechanics.
- Well thought out crafting, non-boring resource mining.
- Variation to gameplay mechanics.
- The balancing is perfect, in my opinion.
Mid:
- Cross-breeding has many "secret" variations. However, these secret variations must either be found out through scrolls, word of mouth, or testing them... One by one. At first I was doing that, testing them, but then I had so many creatures that it was too much of a chore. So I would recommend streamlining this process more, it's just too time consuming even if it does add a mystery factor.
- The music is boring and does not enrich the experience much.
- The pixelated graphics are a downgrade from the detailed 3d renders in some of its competitors.
Cons:
- In a few situations, the exit was blocked and I couldn't progress due to not meeting the requirements of the resource to mine, so I had to just let the enemies finish off my character so I could respawn.
- Maze-like navigation is a little too frequent, and sometimes I'm finding myself wishing the environments were more open.
- There is a story and NPC dialog, but there's no player agency, the story is mediocre, the character dialog is not charismatic or very funny, and there's not much coherence. I would recommend redoing all of the dialog in a better, more charming way.
Bugs:
- When mining resources, companions will sometimes run off to the middle of nowhere to mine something you didn't ask it to.
- Killing enemies with a spillover effect (i.e. damage carries over to the enemy behind it) is game-breaking and you have to force close and restart.
- Taking the boats to different islands introduced a game breaking bug, necessitating a restart.
- Using one of the cube moving interfaces also introduced a game breaking bug, making me restart.
Concluding remarks:
The game has very good bones, and a good bit of meat on it too. I outlined many ways in which the game could be improved, but I'm overall satisfied with the current direction of it. One more thing I would probably add is "unexpected" crossbreeding, so that you may get a surprise result on rare occasions. Additionally, it would be nice to add minmax features, such as a skill tree, consumable boons, or equipment boons - but understandably, that would require adjustment seeing as how the game is currently at a perfect balance. The art is probably one of the first things that stood out to me. I really like the 2.5D art style, and it definitely reminds me of games like Octopath Traveler, which I’m sure was at least part of the inspiration. I’ve actually wanted to make a game with a similar look myself in the past, so seeing that style used here was a big draw for me.
I also really like what the game does with the creature-collection genre. Instead of just feeling like another Pokémon clone where you go around catching monsters, the alchemy and magic aspects give it its own identity and make the whole concept feel more interesting.

It's not having a deep story or complex gameplay mechanics but the loop works. Run around, gather ressources, craft monsters, fight, level them up etc...If I had to call out sth negative, it would be that it lacks a proper tutorial. Lots of things aren't explained well and it has no ideas of its own. It looks like Octopath, has monster fusing like DQM and combat like Pokemon. Not innovative but for the small price, it's a great snack for inbetween. The monster designs go from cute to cool and the great pixel art really makes them shine. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThe mon designs are nice and genuinely unique. They aren't just different colored woodland creatures. A lot of my enjoyment came from finding item combinations to make mons and fusion recipes for mons. The rock-paper-scissors element/damage types make for decent combat with room for expression via mutations and team comp. The puzzles are pretty fun. The material gathering is also really fun because there's a combo multiplier based on how many materials you pick up. In dungeons, you can harvest nodes, leave the drops, and scoop them all up later for a bigger payout. Overall, it was an enjoyable journey through the early access portion of the game. My criticisms are probably gonna be longer than my praises but I'd still recommend trying the game out despite them.
The map is kinda overly winding and complicated for my tastes. You try to traverse a small hill. Instead of walking up the hill, you slink around the side of that hill and the next hill over to find a ramp that lets you walk all the way back to the equivalent of taking one step forward. Like, places that should be an esophagus of a journey are intestines. Sometimes, I'd see a chest off in the distance I'd like to get to. There was no puzzle to solve or challenge to get to it besides exploring the map a couple steps more to find the small inlet to traverse the lip of the hill that eventually leads back to the chest. Coupled with the constant wild encounters, traversal was really frustrating.
The wild monsters on the overworld are visible. It's not like older pokemon games where you walk through a place and a fight suddenly happens. You see the thing and it chases you or you chase it. The problem lies in the aggro range of enemies. Every single mob will chase you two cities over from its normal spawn area and it's really frustrating just exiting from each fight if you don't feel like fighting them. There's a sort of sneak mechanic where walking decreases the aggro range of the mons but like, this is an open world game. The map is BIG. The areas are HUGE (which isn't all that bad). I do not have the time in my day to tiptoe across a meadow to avoid aggro because it'd take the same amount of time to deliberately start the fight and run to despawn the mob. You could also just hit the menu button for 5-6 seconds to turn off the enemy's aggro. It all takes the same amount of time. This happens with every normal wild mob on the map and it's a huge pain point. It'd make sense for an alchemy game to have a craftable repel but there isn't one.
The coliseums (gyms) of certain towns are really boring and don't invite any sort of creativity. It's just three back-to-back fights, no healing in between. The final fight has a leader with a cool and flashy mon. There's no gimmick, it's just an hp-chip gauntlet. Clearing them is just a level check and it could be so much more. There are no fair fights in them. You either outlevel them to the point of oneshotting or get overrun in two turns on the final fight. A lot of my frustration stems from the actual battling system of the game.
The battle system is okay for "I outstat you" but that's all it can feasibly offer rn. Priority is based on speed and a higher speed stat lets a mon potentially move multiple times before the opponent. Genuinely, I think that's a really fun and refreshing way to go about a speed stat. Unless it's a wild encounter or a boss monster, fights are 4v4. Two mons in front to take most (not all) attacks and two in the back. The problem is, damage values are WAY too high and a lot of mons have pitiful hp growth. It's cool when your goblin gunner oneshots a mob 20 levels higher but frustrating when the enemy also has a mon that just takes out your backline on turn 0. While mons can reach up to thousands of damage per move, hp values stay really low. For support/backline-oriented mons, I think I saw their hp values go up by like 10 points in 10 levels. Sure, they aren't supposed to be tanky, but that 10 hp is literally meaningless in the face of a normal attack. The lack of defense and the need to hit harder and hit first just streamlines teambuilding and gameplay into "I need my attackers to be speed and attack oriented to oneshot the game and not engage with any of it". Lo and behold we out here savescumming for any mutations that boost speed and don't hinder offense. Unless your mon is like one of the twoish absolutely tanky frontliners in the game, you're rolling hyper offense in a oneshot comp. Defenses don't matter on most mons and there's only like one mon that can feasibly keep taking hits because of a passive that gives it regen.
Mutations are modifiers on mons that greatly adjust their stats based on the mutation. A "tiny" mon boosts its speed but lowers its physical attack. "Spectral" mons lower phys attack but boost defense and special defense. So on and so forth. They're a fun part of teambuilding but can be frustrating to get the right one on a specific monster. I and a couple others on the discord have definitely spent hours resetting a craft of a single mon to get the right mutation. The chance to get a mutation goes up the more times you craft a mon, but some recipes have really scarce/hard to get mats and it feels easier to just reset the one craft. The max chance to get A mutation (not necessarily the one you want) is 15% after a ton of crafts. You could either just reset the game a bunch until you hit the one you want or spend time going around the overworld and being chased by mons from two towns over as you gather enough resources for an attempt. Mind you, one of the big ticket components, moon crystals, requires you to go through a 12 floor dungeon for a miniscule chance to get one after the boss. I've never got a moon crystal at the end of that dungeon and I never got one from the rare mob that can also drop them from that dungeon. I'd rather try my odds at gamba.
Lastly, I have a gripe with the mons themselves regarding tiers. There are so many cool designs in the game but by the end of EA the only ones that felt worth running were the boss monsters that took expensive crafts, maybe supported by the odd T1 or T2 that had a funny ability or some mat gathering passive. The stat disparity between T1, T2, and T3 are disappointing. Tier 3 mon stats are so absurdly high it's not even funny. I get that using more expensive mons is part of progression, but it makes me look at all these cool designs, movesets, and lovingly tailored passives, and go "ts aint worth its not t3 it's TRASH gtfo my face" and I wish that there were either ways to keep existing lines up to par (like T1 stick golem -> T2 flint golem -> ? ) or like, eviolite for lowtiers. Speaking of which, the devs DO plan on adding held items so this may alleviate some of my pains.

The game does give you a few monsters and then supplies you with resources and recipes. A fun mechanic is that you don’t need the recipe to make the item. If you know the ingredients, or experiment with random ones, you can make a bunch of different monsters and some gaining random mutations that change the monster’s stats and color.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

My only gripe is I over leveled on accident just by back tracking to grab something.
