A lot of the time, it feels like not enough thought has gone into the mechanics, or mechanics that could have been really fun end up becoming frustrating because they were developed too quickly.
How to Fish is the complete opposite of that.
It is especially obvious that a lot of effort went into the combat system. It is so satisfying that, if they pushed it a little further, I honestly think they could have made a genuinely fun FPS game as well. As far as I know, the developers are currently working on an FPS mode, so I am really curious to see where that goes.
The game has a very simple design, and by “simple” I definitely do not mean easy. They have done a really good job of simplifying mechanics that could otherwise become extremely complicated and massively increase the scope of the game.
Combined with the satisfying combat, this made it one of the friendslop games I genuinely had a great time playing.
I also really liked the progression system. Waiting for special fish, unlocking new weapons, upgrading them, and then having the extra motivation of unlocking skins creates a surprisingly satisfying loop. It is a simple system, but it gives you plenty of reasons to keep playing.
The boss fight designs are another great addition on top of all of this.
The only thing I feel the game is missing right now is content, and I assume that will be added over time.
As a designer, I really want to congratulate the team for coming up with the idea and, more importantly, executing it so well. I genuinely enjoyed playing this.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI honestly didn’t expect to enjoy this much. There’s just something really satisfying about catching fish and slowly figuring things out as you play. I also really like how chill the whole game feels. You can just sit back, fish, explore a bit, and enjoy the game without it constantly throwing stuff at you. One of the funniest things was being able to revive your friend by literally slapping them. It’s such a stupid little thing, but it had me laughing every time. It’s simple, but that’s probably what I like about it the most. Definitely a fun little game that I’d recommend if you just want something relaxing to play.

Even set to easy, quite the slog, bosses have massive health bars and timers to make it so you have to be hitting your shots constantly. Unless you cheese with dynamite.
Def a skill issue but didn't expect to have to be a flick shooting fps master just to hit things. Upgrades get limited at each island, so you can't make up for skill problems like not being able to hit targets very easily with high damage.
Player hitboxes feel way bigger than models are, I'd shoot a decent way through the legs of a friendly or far to the side, and it would hit them instead of whatever I was aiming at, even with red dot or scope directly over the target.
We had a group of 3-4 at any given time and even with all 3-4 max upgrades on an island, we just weren't doing damage, while boss was 1 shotting us on default. Its a classic "git gud" don't get hit situation, which just wasn't what I was expecting from a funny meme game about fishing.
Fish felt very janky. They flop and collision glitch into things, as well as move 0-100 in an instant, making them very all over the place and sometimes 1 hitting you without you even registering that they moved on your screen.
3rd island the Albatross boss just decided to not work the first time and sit still in the air kilometers out from the island. We just had to wait out the clock and wait for the reset, wasting all the time we spent getting the bait to summon it.
TLDR: Gets some fun (especially if you have friends) but overall just a straight tedious grind with tons of high focus high skill gameplay with the shooting. May not be a problem for fps gamers, but a big problem for me as a pretty casual gamer. Wish there were more upgrades for damage, or maybe player health, so I wouldn't have to be constantly locked in mentally just to play a funny meme game.
I hope it recieves more updates to fix certain glitches and bugs!

Boss mechanics aren't complicated, and I could avoid taking any damage, but there just isn't enough time to stay alive and do enough dps to beat the timer. Scaling the timer to the number of players is an easy easy fix.
