\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI typically am drawn to narrative based RPG games so why Black Cat Book Club? Well, I also love books so having a little cat reading books over on the right side of my screen* while I work on other things is just too adorable to resist.
I mean it's a desktop companion game, so it's intended for the player to be as involved in helping the cat's progress in their magic studies as they want to be. Players even have the option of allowing their kitty to study automatically or not.
OK sure, but what do you DO here? Well, there are bookshelves, lots of bookshelves. Just select a book with titles like "So you've accidentally joined a coven" and "How to use the tail as an improvised magic circle" and kitty will read them. You can cast spells (cosmic paw, a wisp, etc.) or click runes to directly help them along. There's a chest with goodies. You can also redecorate and make changes to the cat's color and wardrobe. But as a desktop companion, your attention is allowed to drift away to other tasks. So, I usually have this running when I am writing and my brain finds music too distracting. The soft crackle of the fire and the occasional purr provides just the simplest of ambient sounds while the game allows my eyes to occasionally get a visual break from my task at hand.
Anyhow, clearly a very niche game but it's one that is lovingly designed and executed. Kudos to the developers.

Update: Today is release day and now I have the full game! YUSSS! The first thing I want to report is that if you played the demo, all your progress is still there. HOORAY! So, feel free to jump into all those extra books! I'm happy to report the game largely plays the same as before except now with a lot of new stuff now opened up like a Grimoire and your kitty can move to the comfy chair now. Anyhow, the review above was originally written after having played 10.5 hours of the Demo and it still accurately reflects the full game experience. I can tell you I am very much looking forward to many more hours with Meow Meow. Yes, I named my kitty. Don't judge. ;)\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI'm simple; I love books, cats and magic so it was an instant buy. The little customizations are cute, and doing some work or relaxing alongside the literate kitty is wholesome. Mentally, I'm often far away in a cozy library with a cat, for that reason alone it hits perfectly. Simply put, it's quite a lovely desktop companion with plenty of books, a cozy ambience and even a few optional tasks. Highly recommended.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I'm really enjoying it so far, the customizations are cute and the idle functions are pretty straight forward, you wiggle your mouse to get crystals faster, or you can simply idle and still get them pretty quickly. The ambience is really relaxing, I love listening to the rain, fireplace,and the cute purrs here and there. The zoom in and resize features are also nicely set up. It's nice to have the game running in the background (cat and fireplace noises) while occasionally switching to the game to stroke the cat, choose the next grimoire to read and help them to read faster and learn spells. The only thing I wish the game did was that if you have stocked up on buying books, that once the cat finishes a book and you are away, that the cat would pick up the next book and continue on until the cat runs out of purchased books. That's my only complaint. Otherwise you have to put the book back and pick the next book for the cat.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I bought this game last night and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since. It’s my first idle game, and I was worried I wouldn’t enjoy the genre but this one completely won me over. It’s CRAZY GOOD, and I genuinely love it.
Progression, gameplay suggestions & minor (topic) critiques:
The lighting could be improved so details like cat fur and eye colors aren’t washed out by the fireplace glow.
Let him automatically move to the next book after finishing the current if we already bought more books ahead of time.
Provide clarity on items like the feather pen, whose purpose is currently unclear.
Cosmetic costs should scale progressively to make progression feel more rewarding.
Add achievements tied to progression: completing shelves (1, 5, etc.) and leveling up the tower.
Give players more ownership of the tower by letting us be the mage rather than Alice and name our cats as we see fit.
Cosmetics & customization:
Add more cosmetic options: candles (I want to change the candles on his table), different styles of glasses (like half-moon).
Give us a system where we need to learn certain spells inside some specific books throughout the game to be able to unlock things like colored fire spells for the fireplace to change the feeling of the place, and some that let us change the types of plants in the tower or summon wisps with customizable colors.
Let players name their cat, and, this is going to sound crazy but, maybe even have two cats (or another animal like frog or bat): one permanent and another that occasionally visits for dinner in later stages after we open that last window (only appears once every 2 or 3 irl days, very rare).
Atmosphere & audio:
Rain sounds could be more varied: softer, less uniform, with occasional wind, bells, glitter-like tones, or foliage rustling.
Introduce light medieval bard music with selectable styles; European, Viking, Asiatic; that players can shuffle through (maybe we unlock music sheets reading books and have to use a certain spell we also learn to enchant an instrument to play?)
Lore & identity
Expand the lore to deepen immersion, please!

This was one of the top suggestions so I gave it a try and... I LOVE this adorable little idle game! Now both my son and I use it as something cute to have in the background while doing school work, writing, etc. on our laptops we both had the demo and upgraded to the full version yesterday when it was released. The cute little cat noises are just *purrfect* and I enjoy decorating the library and switching out kitty accessories. I hope we'll have even more options in the future and maybe some soft background music but, right now, I truly love this little desktop kitty.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Aside from the fact that I will readily try any game with a cat in it, this little idler is so great to study with, from the calming rain/fireplace sound effects to the cute cat purrs that grace your ears every now and then. And the book titles are hilarious, with "Occult Studies for the Thumbless" being my current favorite. The text size scaling option is much appreciated as well for those of us who are half-blind.
