But now, almost 30 hours in, and despite genuinely trying so hard to enjoy the story, the controls and combat have completely put me off playing any further. It's incredibly jarring to have such a laggy experience, especially when you know your PC isn't the issue. And don't even get me started on the fact that you can't even jump onto a random box AS A CAT?!
The combat is also super mid. I thought that, at the very least, playing as a witch would mean I could actually cast spells, but noooo, apparently I'm just supposed to whack enemies with a broom instead. Pros:
-Storytelling is stunning. The mythology and witchcraft are amazingly depicted, dark and self-absorbent.
-Visuals both World and Character. The world and special effects look insanely good. Sure, NPCs can be extremely repetitive, but, this is early access, and hope variety is introduced. Noa looks AMAZING in both lux and Nux forms, lot's of attention to detail in costume.
-Traversal is so fun, and in Nux form it's peak and feels like a fairytale witch.
-Concept is superb, fantastical, and morbidly demonic, which is such a fresh change from all the vanilla worlds since Witcher 3, maybe The Blood of the Dawnwalker and Crimson Desert, but not as it needs to be for the storytelling going on here. It's perfectly dark.
-Music and Sound Effects are immersive, and intuitive, the music changes as the scene changes, or the dialogue, or even location. The sound effects are so cool, and sound dark and scary LOL I played it during night hours and flinched a few times, some sounds come out of nowhere. If you pay attention, the music is different when in Bateratze form, so are the sound effects, just, win.
Cons
-Combat is clunky, repetitive, and often times when caught inside a house, combat begins and some options become unavailable, and NPCs stand in the way. I like the staff combat, but it's just too repetitive. Spent a few minutes beating each of the 2 Amalgams during the ending, which is alright, considering the state, BUT with the SAME ACTIONS? Not alright. It just felt like a dodge, dodge, revolution alternative.
-Stutter is noticeable at times, I have yet to fix it on my end.
All in all, I loved it. I will probably play again a few times while it fully releases. There is so much I probably missed with Aaron the Bateratze going inside buildings, and platforming.
TL;DR Honestly 77/100, I got over the combat given the extremely interesting storytelling and portrayal. The visuals and sound, form change, bateratze form, all the lore. Top notch.

Combat level is Hard or God Mode, so if you're a story or easy mode player, you're screwed. There are a lot of enemies and very few hits you can take. It became very stressful very quickly.
There is also a lack of guidance. I will admit I need a bit of hand holding when it comes to certain things, but I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to get my cat to get up to the window when we were escaping the jail. I tried jumping on every surface, and what looks like the obvious thing to do, it wouldn't allow me to do. So I just gave up and asked for a refund.

In most modern games, you can "skip, skip, skip" the dialogue and then follow the highlighted path to your objective. And once you make it to your objective, a handy tutorial will pop up and tell you exactly what skills you need to use to solve the "puzzle."
This game expects some level of remedial intelligence from its players, and that will probably offend some people. They will call it clunky. If you bother to read/listen, it's all well-explained, but the game isn't going to hold your hand. It's going to say (literally, in dialogue), "your objective is on the roof" and expect you to figure out how to get there. There are no mini maps and few highlighted paths to get where you need to be. Yes, there are clues, but you have to look for them. To me, that's refreshing. I like puzzles and I like having to struggle a bit before realizing "DUH" and moving forward. I literally just spent about an hour wandering around, finally returned to the original place I had been searching, and found a document I needed on a bookshelf.
Overall, the story is fantastic. I like the characters and I'm engrossed in the mystery. The concept is 10/10. All of this is enough for me to recommend this game. The devs really did put their hearts into it, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't loving it so far.
Mechanically speaking, I'm not impressed by the combat. I consider myself to be pretty adept with combat systems--and this was something I would actually call "clunky." I'm very much ok with a female protagonist having a small HP bar--that's fine. But it all feels...slow. My assumption is that the devs intended to have you complete an attack animation before you could dodge. That adds some realism and an element of timing to the combat. It's different. You can't just spam/button-mash and win an encounter... you need to finish the striking animation before you can successfully time the dodge....and you need to decide whether it's worthwhile to strike before someone else starts their attack animation. I'm used to a much faster pace for combat, so this feels a bit slow. If you're coming out of a game like Crimson Desert or Blood of Dawnwalker, it feels like you're fighting in quicksand. If the game leans into problem solving over combat over the long run, then the critique about combat becomes less important. I played all of "the Room" series and absolutely loved it, so if this game leans into the puzzle solving aspect, then I think the combat criticisms will fall by the wayside. That said, I'm only a few hours in, so there is a lot of game left to play and it could go either way.
I'm amending my review here to say that I've completed through the Cranes and completed the second esbat (and the end of the early release) and I stand by everything I said above. Combat is "meh" but everything else is unique and makes you do some problem solving and actual sleuthing.
As for price... I'd rather pay for a game where people take risks and try new things than fund predictable slop. I don't want games to go the same way as movies--where you just get an endless stream of sequels and reboots rather than new ideas. I'd rather pay $70 for something fun and fresh than $50 for something that feels like I've already played it. I'd rather pay for an early access game that has bugs and an active, nimble hotfix team than a AAA game that takes months to release a patch.

Whatever they have going for the gameplay is:
information gathering via searching houses and shelves for prompts, stealth by possessing people to hide or making distractions with limited resources, and combat by dodge and one button attacking with the same three move combo. I'm sure there's maybe one more move or another if the trailers are any indication, but you won't find that a few hours in.
Story is a lot of timeline jumping with three protagonists: one strong (Noa), one alright (Cleo), one grating (Aaron). It's serviceable, but disjointed and doesn't handle its elements with a good hold. Personally, I feel like we should just focus on Noa and keep the future elements farther back. I don't feel we need this heavy handed comparison to Assassin's Creed to make it work.
On top of it all, devs got caught with AI assets once and are spending every other patch with an apology tour saying they're not using it at all now. If you do not want to touch a game that was even tainted once, I don't blame you, but otherwise we're gonna have to trust there are actual humans working on this if the game is to keep going. Game is far from dead as far as development goes, but I can just tell they're under a lot of pressure. Good.

Doing possessions and collecting keys :) I have I think maybe close to 40hrs of gameplay.
