\n\t\t\t\t\tLet’s be real, Warhounds looks and feels like it was made on a tight budget by a handful of people. The animations are pretty stiff, you will notice some minor bugs, the camera sometimes goes crazy, and some UI menus look like a mobile app from 2018. If you are looking for a polished AAA cinematic experience, this ain't it.

But man... once you get into the actual tactical gameplay, you can feel that the devs put their hearts into it. The gunplay is incredibly punchy, every single piece of tactical gear drastically changes how you approach a mission, and the mercenaries actually have distinct personalities instead of being faceless bots. It has that old school soul that modern big budget games completely lost.

It’s rough around the edges and definately needs patches, but the core gameplay loop is addictive as hell. Solid recommend if you can look past the budget limitations.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tThis is just Sparta rebranded. The dialogue is terrible, the story is just JA3 but with less depth, the graphics are barely out of the 2010's and they absolutely lied about "No BS RNG". It's riddled with it, the only thing different there is that if you are within arms reach of an enemy you get a "golden 100%". That's nice, but its not what they advertised. It's also pretty buggy. I apparently was on for 4hrs after I closed the game to have dinner and watch some tv with the family, so I can't refund it. Do I hate it? No, I don't but this isn't worth the price tag. I'd skip it until it's on sale for around $10-$15, especially with Zero Company about to release.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tOkay, so I generally don't leave reviews when I have so little playtime, as I am usually concerned about loving the game but running into the "two hour surprise" as I like to call it... but I feel this time it is warranted. This game is rough as heck around the edges, as one would expect it to be for (assumedly) *just* hitting 1.0 and launching to the public. I happen to think the asking price is a bit high for a title that is frankly, being put into its proving ground/crucible stage. An even twenty I feel would go a longer way, when it comes to luring in curious buyers. All that being said, there is a lot of heart here. I enjoyed the character interactions and dialogue in the tutorial section, even if there was an odd moment where Julia's voice went Brit for a line or two. The nod I found myself smiling at the most was when they address the "commander" and the mercs present looked to the screen. I admit, I am a sucker for things like that. The gameplay so far has been good! Tighter than expected and definitely scratching that XCOM itch. The customization needs a lot of work, but I am happy it is there as I am also a sucker for making my operators look a certain way and more or less match, like a proper private professional army.

I also feel I have to say this due to the one negative review: Shotguns have the lowest AP rating, so it stands to reason you are only going to shred an armored enemy's armor and do little else. I happen to KNOW for a fact this is how it is as I tested the AP power of the tutorial squad in both missions before you get your "Avenger" to reference XCOM2.

Look... We all have seen plenty of dim attempts and blatant cashgrabs/shovelware. I could be hoodwinked but I don't feel Warhounds is one of these situations. I'm willing to be forgiving, but not ignorant of a game that shows promise and I really think Warhounds shows this promise. I'm a Refund Ranger, just like any other person who is careful with their money. It isn't exactly easy for me to go over the two hour mark with Steam titles these days, but this game kept my attention. I just personally find it disheartening that one negative review that really doesn't even objectively point out the game's flaws is enough for so many people to pass on a game that deserves at least an honest chance. Like literally the only valid complaint in the one negative review to me is the camera. Yes, the camera angle could use improvement, as no one finds it entertaining to look at the inside of terrain as one of your operators blows someone away. I could go on, but this is a review, not Mt. Soapbox.

So far, this game while certainly in need of polish, I feel is in a decent playable state.

Pros:
That all too familiar XCOM/Jagged Alliance action patricians like us have grown to love.
Customization of your mercenaries.
Freedom from those moments where you flank an enemy with a 80%+ chance to hit and completely miss. However, while I noticed I didn't miss those sorts of high chance shots, I also noticed that a hit doesn't always guarantee a crit or a full kill. I have, at least once, gotten close to where I had an 80% or higher chance to hit and only "scratch" the enemy.
The voice acting is fine, and I find myself so far liking how the cast is obviously having fun.
Controller support for sure! I always wondered why XCOM2 didn't have controller support on Steam, considering that it released on console. I just couldn't get into it on Steam, knowing I put hundreds of hours into a version on Xbox that had full controller support. Being able to plug my gamepad in and play Warhounds was unironically one of the most exciting parts of my gameplay so far.

Cons:
The asking price, for sure. I'm sorry, but I just don't feel this game should be 30 bucks. (29.74 specifically for me as a Yank)
The character customization/outfitting, while enjoyable for me who likes making everyone look similar and simple, needs quite a bit of TLC. XCOM's customization has never been super stellar, which is exactly why in this department I can't be anywhere near as lenient. You can do at least as well as Firaxis, Everplay!

Overall, right now my score for this game is a solid 6/10 (slightly above average). Definitely room for improvement, because I know full well that 1.0 isn't the end of this game's development cycle. When you think you're done improving, that is when you fail. And please, if anyone is going through the reviews, trying to decide based on these if you are even going to bother, don't listen to the negative reviews that don't even bother to put their gripes into a digestible perspective. I've seen way too many games with potential become abandoned over tripe such as that. Make YOUR OWN decision based on YOUR OWN experiences. Don't let any review, good or bad, control your mind when it comes to a game. We have a two hour refund window for a reason!\t\t\t\t\t

+ Gunplay plays absolutely perfect every shootout is super intense
+ Mercenaries are really cool love the charactors
+ So many neat little details on the maps its actually pleasing to just look around locations between actions
+ Music is awesome
+ Graphics look really nice and sharp

- Met some minor bugs and the whole thing feels a bit unpolished right now
- Missions are kind of repetitive at the start mostly same objectives but maybe it gets better later
- Loading screens take way too long honesly you just sit and wait forever

Overall I am still enjoying it and will keep playing. Great core but definately needs a couple of quick patches.

That is a flat out lie. The entire game relies on RNG and it is as ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ as it is in most of these games.

Failing covert missions that have a 5% fail chance? No need to reload, the outcome is predetermined. Fun if that happens to 3 missions with a 5%, 7% and 8% fail chance in a row. That's a 0.024% probability of happening. Can it happen? Yep with the aforementioned probability. Does it happen in this game? Absolutely.

You will miss your 80 or 90% shots, you will not be able to consistently flank to get 100%. Your guns are NOT deadly, you still need to break body armor and do random damage numbers etc.

So as usual the RNG is fake af, you cannot change outcomes with loading, and you're better off playing modded XCOM, Xenonauts, JA3, or anything that has some soul.

I regret that I'm past the refund timer on this.

I was testing how the games RNG works, that obviously includes loading games to see what happens. Let me quote the product page for you:
"No fake RNG - only true ballistics and lethal tactics." - Lie, it's RNG. Ballistic and Tactics matter about as much as in other games of the genre.

"Calculate lines of fire, flank and break cover, and seize the high ground. Every turn is decided by your planning and honest physics - not by RNG." - Lie, it's a % based hit chance that decides the outcome of your turns. Your planning in the end can only stack the RNG in your favour, just like in other games of the genre.

"What awaits you:
No point-blank misses and no bogus randomness." - Partially true, if you define point blank as exactly being in an adjacent square with no fence in between you and your target. No bogus randomness on the other hand is a lie since it is a seeded RNG. you can reload and do the same sequence of actions from before your reload and the outcome remains exactly the same.

So the TL;DR; is not about miss chances in general or anything, it is about the developers lie about RNG. THAT is the problem, had they not lied about it, this review would not exist in it's form.\t\t\t\t\t

This is a reskin of a $10.00 Russian only game, Sparta 2035.

Funded by the Russian government, specifically the sanctioned IRI, based in Dubai. This exists to bypass the sanctions imposed, because their own once beautiful country is this desperate for revenue, slowly dying within while they send 1000's of their own people to their deaths daily.

Game is a group of white only mercenaries killing black people in Africa, yes very Russian, something that has already been happening for some time.

While I really wanted a game like this for some time, (a new xcom, not the blatant racism).. supporting this title is unacceptable to me. With extreme load times with a ssd, probably loading bloatware, middling graphics, stuttered animations, severely lacking ai disclosures... if it were honest developers, I could still enjoy. But I don't want my money going that way.. Granted it could be argued that the tax dollars we pay contribute to the zionist genecide happening to the Palestinian people, but the government wouldn't granted me a refund based on moral issues.

While I realize the 23mil Ruble equivalent of the $30 dollars I spent would most likely end up in the pockets of one of endless list of incompetent corrupt military leaders, and not Iranian weapons platforms to murder Ukrainian civilians, this just leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI can't remember a worse impression I had in 20 mins for a game I thought I might really love, having shoved 100+ hours into various X-Com and JA entries (and the more involved ballistics of Phoenix Point), just the worst UI I've seen in a genre that desperately needs clear UI, and a genre I personally work in and know it's really not that hard to make a non-terrible UI if you've played any of these games in the last 20 years instead of waxing nostalgic about Jagged Alliance and X-Com while ignoring any progress made in UI clarity in the 21st century.

1. No combat log, so any of the below issues are much harder to notice for yourself.

2. No indicator on an attack preview of HOW MANY SHOTS YOU FIRE, I had to cover over my weapon in the corner to find out - my assault rifle in fact doesn't do 1-2 damage, but fires 3 shots (very unclearly phrased as the shotgun saying "Bullets: 5" which is distinct from it having 3 ammo to fire. And shotguns fire shot, not bullets.) It should be INCREDIBLY obvious - say, with a combat log - of what I'm looking at. Does my shotgun roll a 20% chance 5 times to see if someone gets hit, and each hit deals 1 damage, if I shoot it at someone in cover and further away? What did "scratch" mean in this context - it still killed the guy... again, a log would help...

3. An attack preview that just blinks your max possible normal damage even if you're on average going to do a tiny fraction of it.

4. Apparently there are crits? An enemy shotgunner rushed my person, and I shot them point blank with an AR that showed I'd destroy their 1 armor and deal 3/6 of their HP as damage, but they died instantly because I got crits. The UI didn't even show crits as a thing that exists!

5. So if somebody shoots from behind hard cover, they step around the corner and get a 100% hit chance on someone you flank. But flanking from soft cover to soft cover has an 80% hit chance because my person just shoots through their own cover instead of leaning around it? Why? Is this an option?

6. You can't skip cutscenes - I just wanted to space to skip past lines that I could read faster than they were delivered, but apparently not an option. I just Alt-F4'd and committed to refund when trapped in a cutscene after the first semi-proper fight.

I didn't really see anything else jump out at me as positive, and this is way too big a pile of "huh, what, why?"

If the devs would like to pay *me* to keep playing their game and explain how to make a modern tactical UI clean, informative and responsive, I guess I would, but I'm certainly asking for my own money back. I'd find this a bit shaky as a day 1 of early access - no indicator on the attack preview of how many shots you fire, really? - but calling this straight to 1.0 is a travesty.\t\t\t\t\t

If you're into tactical strategy Warhounds feels instantly familiar but that ends up being a massive double-edged sword. On one hand it tries hard to capture that XCOM vibe with squad management and base building.
The issue is that the actual gameplay doesn't back it up. They make a deal out of having "no fake RNG" and relying purely on "true ballistics" but in practice the hit or miss stuff feels just as arbitrary and broken as anything else.

Trying to run it on a Steam Deck is pretty rough too. The framerate is constantly choppy. The controls feel like an afterthought making menus and movement super clunky.

Honestly once you get past the store page it genuinely feels like some modders reskin of an unpatched game from 15 years ago.

On top of all the performance and gameplay issues there's the offshore publishing shells in Dubai and the US (Everplay DMCC and Brightika) being used to thwart sanctions. this is actually Sparta 2035 under a different name built by a Moscow dev team (Lipsar Studio) using state media grants from Russias Institute for Internet Development. Buying it just funnels cash and taxes back, into that economy.

Skip this one. Spend your money on a tactical game that actually works, isnt state sponsored and doesn't try to sell you a game that before the war was on sale for $2 in some places.\t\t\t\t\t

Characters running wild paths into cones they don't need to, to get to a safe spot on the map I chose on purpose. Awful lines everywhere connecting to you for every decision that you cannot turn off obscuring the screen. Overwatch mechanic is insane, all enemies just run to the back and cover the whole field camping. The hand holding with tutorials even into the 2nd mission like come on man... I don't need popups every 2 seconds ruining the immersion and game... I know what a fkin grenade is. Visually cluttering field and the camera needs wayyyy more things taken out of the vision its hard to see yourself through walls and everything on the field. Characters seem like AI or something, weird ragdolls and physics. Shot a guy point blank with a shotgun with 100% chance to hit and it just took his armor off... HE IS NOT WEARING A HELMET! This game promised "No point-blank misses and no bogus randomness. Real ballistics, destructible cover, vertical gameplay, and cone overwatch." Yeah idk... 2 missions frustrated me into a refund lol.

Edit: To respond to this developer comment "Each weapon inside the game has it's own armor penetration ability - shotgun has the worst one. Please keep it in mind when flanking armored enemy with a shotgun guy." Sir, the "armored enemy" was a dude in jeans, no shirt, and dreads... with a body plate on... so I ran up behind him and stuffed his face with my barrel... and it cracked his armor. However, "Every turn is decided by your planning and honest physics - not by RNG.", well try flanking enemy with a shotgun, 100% RNG, BOOM! shot miss. What an amazing kind of physics.
I've play the demo version several months ago, stopped when the game crashed multiple times. Now the 1.0 is out, the crash still happen again and again.

The missions are bland and repetitive, the assets are mid-tier at best, the gameplay loops poorly conceived and uninspired. On top of that, the game crashes frequently (for me at least) and it is apparently just a re-release of Sparta 2035, a Russian-developed XCOM clone that was banned off Steam due to sanctions. All that said, it isn't the worst XCOM clone I've ever seen, but the price is completely ridiculous considering the quality of the end product. € 15 would be the most anyone should pay for this.\t\t\t\t\t

Beyond that, the writing is pretty rough. Not sure if it's because the writer doesn't speak English as their first language or they're just bad at natural dialogue. The voice acting doesn't help - weird emphasis on the wrong words by a lot of characters.

As far as the actual playable missions go, it does the X-Com thing where enemies see you as soon as you see them. There's no stealth phase like in X-Com 2. If you can see an enemy, even if it's through a window and they have their back to you, their entire squad instantly knows you're there.

Been playing for a couple of hours now and im cautiously optimistic tbh. If youre coming from modern XCOM expecting 99% hit-chance misses, forget it... Warhounds feels much closer to old school Jagged Alliance or the original UFO Defense. Ballistics are super lethal, cover actually matters and one bad turn will get your whole squad wiped. The mercenary management loop feels solid so far.

My only gripes are the camera angles being a bit wonky indoors, and the inventory ui is slightly clunky. But mechanicaly? This is a gem. If you like punishing tactical games its a must buy.\t\t\t\t\t

+ Core combat is mechanicaly sound cover destruction actually works and you cant just camp in one spot
+ High ground advantage is real putting a sniper on the roof gives noticeable accuracy buffs
+ Flanking is mandatory if you try to shoot enemies head-on you will just waste your ammo
+ Good synergy between different archetypes every merc plays differently and feels useful
- The class skill tree looks pretty shallow right now with very few interesting choices
- Mission objectives are quite repetitive after a few runs you just do the same things over and over

The tacticle firefights are fun for now. Since I haven't played much yet I really hope to see cooler items and new enemy types later in the game because right now the progression feels very barebones.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tReally wanted to like this game, but it's just not the game that's advertised on the steam page. Yeah it's a mix of XCOM and Jagged Alliance, but it's 90% XCOM and 10% Jagged Alliance. So, should I not just go play XCOM? About the combat and tactics: they're fine, it's just worse XCOM combat but with reworked overwatch, and that's it. The class system is just XCOM, the overworld is just Africa flavored XCOM.

The story is just Jagged Alliance 3, but worse. The merc dialog is bland and unfunny and the starting mercs have barely any personality, apart from some very unfunny and uninspired voice quips. The JA series characters and story are fun not only because they are references to classic action movies, but because they parody these movies. This games just parrots generic action movie dialogue trying to sound ironic but the writting is not good enough to do it. It comes out as generic, uninspired, derivative and boring.

The cutscenes are normal. The voice acting is passable, but not great, the scenery and explosions look good. But the character models are right in the middle of the uncanny valley. All men look like potatoes, all women look like OF models. All this makes game looks good from far away, but when you take a closer look it appears deeply bland. Character customization is limited to appearence, with no possibility to alter backstories, age or name, in opposition to XCOM.

Even though Warhounds it's kinda fun it's just not worth the price tag. Especially with the weird claims made by the devs about "No RNG ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥" and "Real Ballistics", which are just false and the VERY weird way the devs are responding to the steam reviews. It might just be the language barrier, but the passive agressive tone is extremely unbecoming.

About the "RNG ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥", there is plenty! Say it with me: JUST LIKE IN XCOM. The only difference is that the point-blank flanking shots don't have a chance to miss, which they SOMETIMES do in XCOM. BUT damage is still a roll and so are critical hits! Did I mention that your 100% hit chance attack can also only scratch your target, but only sometimes? Yeah. Not only that, the stats from new recruits are random, just like in the older XCOM games. Also your merc's classes are RANDOMLY rolled. Just.Like.XCOM. Saying that the minimal change of making point-blank shots always hits drastically alters the tactics of Warhounds when compared to XCOM is ridiculous.

About the "Real Ballistics", it's just the XCOM cover system. That's it. XCOM had destroyable cover, this also has that. It's not a new feature. The way it's advertised I thoght that the shooting mechanics would be more like Phoenix Point, a game where you don't have a probability based hit-chance and can aim your shots manually to hit certain body parts, with the only deviation being gun spread, not some abstract hit-chance. There's nothing wrong with chance based hits, but calling this game systems "Real Ballistics" is a false statement. Just buzzwords to trick people into buying the game thinking it's something that it's not, meaningfully different from XCOM.

Before the Dev says "Oh, but you just played 1 hour of the game, how can you know it's bad???". I have disk copies of JA, JA2, JA2:Unfinished Business and the original XCOM. I played all of them to completion before I was 15 year old. I completed JA and JA2 before I could speak english, when I was 10. I have about 250 hours on steam playing the modern XCOM series, and even more hours if I count the "non-official" playtime I had before buying the games on steam. I can say with the utmost certainty that this is a subpar tactics game. The best part of this game, the tactical combat, is just copied and pasted XCOM 2 combat with MINOR alterations. If the first bite of a sandwich tastes like hot garbage I won't come back for a second bite, I'll ask for a refund while I still CAN.

And talking about a refund... I don't think that the tutorial barely edging 2 hours (Max time before guaranteed refund on steam) is a coincidence. I mean, it AWFULY convenient for the dev isn't?

Oh, just some more addenda, by reading the other negative reviews I found out that this game is just an asset flip of a russian game, Sparta 2035. I Googled it, and it's true! This is just a cheap and fast game by a russian dev trying to make a quick buck. AND IT HAS DAY ONE COSMETIC DLC!!!

I was very excited for this game's launch. The trailer looked great! And if this was released as an early acess it would be a great starting point for a GREAT game. An EA release with more polish, better models, a few mechanical tweeks and more additions to make Warhounds more distinct from the XCOM series this game's ratings would be overwhelmingly positive and your pockets would be WAY fuller. But this just seems like rushwork for a quick cashgrab. Shameful.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tIn its current state I can't really condone the game. I've had mission fails due to bugs. Soldiers that are somehow revived and limping but are considered dead by the game which results in anything reloading the mission to crash the game. The "few" parameter doesn't make sense for how rapid 4 pods spawn in on rescue civilian missions. There's also losing a 3% chance and then escaping 2 pods of enemies who can just pot shot your first squad out of the tutorial. For a game that advocates less RNG, all I'm seeing is RNG. Straight Bogus randomness. This is all on the difficulty the game starts you on. I think I'll stick with my XCOM2 Long War campaign. At least if I'm going to die to bs, it's going to be a pod of 9 patrolling on the edge of the map instead of 3 pods of 3 converging on all corners and then forced to eat overwatch after overwatch because the objective itself was impossible to attain in a squad of 4 in a concise manner.

I enjoy the mechanics of friendly fire. By all means that is funny, but it just adds to the argument of them having random bogusness because I can scratch my own guy due to overwatch with a pistol when there's half cover between the two, or the enemy can miss a flanking shot that to us would easily be 100% death and kill their melee guy instead who is mid clash and leave my guy unharmed, or a shotgun blast will not just kill the enemy, but graze my guy who is 2 tiles away and lose a sizeable chunk of their armor on the lowest ap shred weapon.

I might get shot in the foot for saying this with less than 2 hours of play and having only 140 hours on XCOM2, but this game has crashed four times trying to extract from a botched intelligence mission in the city alone due to the aforementioned "zombie soldier" bug.

Love the no RNG up close and running up to someone and shooting them in the face is very satisfying.

The game progressing in getting money from the combat missions you do and has a nice intel style mission as well that gives some xp to your guys

One of your first tasks is to hire 6 more mercs, so you are going to be managing a lot of mercs not just 4, they get wounded, they die and the number you command is expandable with base upgrades.

The story is okay, lets me be clear, this is not an amazing revolutionary title in the space, but if you want a new merc squad to manage with turn based combat this is for you.\t\t\t\t\t
