The animations are pretty stiff, you will notice some minor bugs, the camera sometimes goes crazy, and some UI menus look like a mobile app from 2018. If you are looking for a polished AAA cinematic experience, this ain't it.
But man... once you get into the actual tactical gameplay, you can feel that the devs put their hearts into it. The gunplay is incredibly punchy, every single piece of tactical gear drastically changes how you approach a mission, and the mercenaries actually have distinct personalities instead of being faceless bots. It has that old school soul that modern big budget games completely lost.

Opponents ramp up very quickly, and have access to armor and weapons you can't get. 100% hits are not 100%. Enemies see your whole team even if only one of them is spotted. Enemies immediately engage without hesitation as if they were waiting all day for you. Your team often shoots at its own waist high cover instead of the enemy.Enemies seem to be able too shoot through walls while your team cant. Opponents often hide behind invisible cover. Factories and mines that you capture and should be giving you income, do not. I wanted to love this game, but in its current format it is not loveable. I would wait until the programmers patch many of the issues listed above.
Having now played over 50 missions. I can say the balance is way off. Did an "easy" mission today, I was outnumbered 2-1, with opponents who had superior firepower, vastly superior armor, better to hit chance, better range and mini tanks! I was shot through a wall that supposedly gave me full protection, my return fire hit the same wall and did nothing. I know the developers are working on this but they have along way to go before this game becomes even remotely playable. I would encourage them to hire or get a volunteer who has real combat experience to help them with the glaring errors that are in this game. Too bad I really wanted to love it, but until its fixed stay away.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

And it sounds very similar, on paper: run a mercenary company in Africa, with a game loop alternating between strategic decision-making on the overworld and tactical grid-based combat where a small OP squad overwhelms superior numbers.
In practice it is in fact very like JA3, with quite a lot of modern XCOM mixed in. The problem is that it mimics its influences very strongly, but somehow manages to be worse than either of them in every respect. Soldier customization is limited; you make a decision about once every 2nd level. They each have a voice and a few lines, but most of those lines are annoying. The marketing suggested that each would have unique personal skills, but in face only a few of them seem to.

i would like the option the customize my veterans tho. it is so lame being forced to use a guy that looks like his on vacation in his shorts and Hawaii ♥♥♥♥, becouse his extra perk makes him directly better then anyone else. i refuse to use them tho it breaks the immersion for me.
also i get inclusion is important for some people. i would just like an option for " male only " female only " mixed " that way everyone can play the game how they like, and i like my mercs to be male. tiny girls with huge guns again breaks the immersion.

The dialogue is terrible, the story is just JA3 but with less depth, the graphics are barely out of the 2010's and they absolutely lied about "No BS RNG". It's riddled with it, the only thing different there is that if you are within arms reach of an enemy you get a "golden 100%". That's nice, but its not what they advertised. It's also pretty buggy. I apparently was on for 4hrs after I closed the game to have dinner and watch some tv with the family, so I can't refund it. Do I hate it? No, I don't but this isn't worth the price tag. I'd skip it until it's on sale for around $10-$15, especially with Zero Company about to release.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

This game has pretty dated graphics, definitely what seems like AI-generated photos leftover from the demo (which were 100% AI "placeholders").
This is all on top of the controversy behind it being literally the same game of Sparta 2035, which is sold in Russia only, according to some articles online.
As for what it does right, I do highly appreciate the differentiation between ability and movement points. And the fact that you can shoot twice in one turn if you didn't move. Your troops reloading after killing all in-sight enemies is a nice QoL as well. Class variety is fairly standard, but I enjoyed machine gunners way more than I expected since they actually have good accuracy and fantastic overwatch. Grenadiers were pretty good as well, though not nearly enough cover is destructible considering how many heavy grenades I'm tossing. Maps often have high points so your snipers' squadsight is incredibly useful.
Assault troopers' melee seems good, but honestly most of the time they just would shoot my guy, which stopped the melee from killing (you do some basic damage, and "win" the melee next turn, though it's only a % chance victory. The enemy may turn it around on you and kill you, not just down. Kill).
What I didn't enjoy were bugs/skill interactions not happening half the time. For example, my sniper should get AP back from a kill, but seemed like she didn't, even when it was her only move that turn. Medics' keystone skill is "Overwatch costs no AP and can be used with 0 AP." This is nice, HOWEVER, if you use him last and have no other units with AP, the turn automatically ends, and I saw no setting to disable "automatically end turn on 0 AP." Sometimes the grenades wouldn't hit, despite the enemy glowing (which is to indicate they should hit, as my understanding).
Voice acting is okayish, but Julia, the spokesperson of the outfit somehow sounds like the most naive schoolgirl, despite having been with this merc outfit for quite some time. The black market guy sounds like a white suburban college student selling weed for the first time for some reason.
Also, you have "veterans" which are pre-made soldiers that you can occasionally hire. They all have one personal skill which may or may not be useful, as opposed to your generic hires that get none. This made me not care about those hires, despite them being my first rookies. Hires also had variable skills at hiring, which coooould be an interesting concept a la XCOM, but honestly some of them were just so trash, I don't get the point (3 base hp and 6 movement is just useless).
Basebuilding amounts to just paying the 10k or so to build a thing, and you collect contracts to be able to buy gear. That was ok, though it's just a waiting game really for that.
My least favorite part of the strategic layer is how often your squads seemed to fail the recon missions to unlock more missions. They'd consistently say ~5 - 10% chance of failing and it's not confirmation bias to say I just had to do "save my troops" missions 5 times in a row. They're not fun, just tedious. Let me choose to not save them, and just have the troops be severely injured rather than dead. Saving them nets about 20 xp (which is essentially nothing), and is just boring at that frequency.
There are 3 factions you meet. It was fairly easy to get them to 100 each via the missions, though they often would fluctuate. It's important to get them to 100 to get the contracts to buy the best gear. However, you cannot buy the gear if the rep goes below the level again. So, I didn't buy enough sniper rifles from the Chinese faction (need 100), and now I am just sitting on the map layer waiting for a faction mission to pop so I can buy the sniper rifle (even though I already have the contract!). I understand the idea, but why bother making it a contract if I can lose the ability to buy the gear?
Note, I haven't finished the game, though I am forcing myself to slog through it at this point. I just had another failed recon mission and took a break to write this review.

At least the game launched fully instead of sitting in early access for years and ending up nowhere! \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tGame not for me, XCOM was way more fun, the limit of 4 people on a mission ensure each mission is how they want it, the gear and money is controlled as well. The combat feels like bullet trading and most of the time it is grenade fighting or bullet trading against bullet sponges. It doesn't have the fun of JA2 or the tactics. There is no shock, no suppressive fire, nothing but you move they move it feels more like a chess game and less like combat. They don't use fake RNG because they don't have too. Everything else is closely controlled and feels more like a game on rails. The map is small. The base building is just an exercise (none of the tactics in the early xcom games). They got my money and I got frustrated and wasted my life. They are certainly the winners.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI very rarely leave reviews but Warhounds was such a huge disappointment, so many mechanics and beats are completely lifted from a variety of XCOM titles, the dialogue is cringey and makes you hate the characters, technically the game is a mess and visually the art style really doesn't do it for me. I'm a huge fan of turn based tactics games but this was a huge miss for me, I encountered lots of weird bugs where I would spend money on operators but wouldn't get them.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tOkay, so I generally don't leave reviews when I have so little playtime, as I am usually concerned about loving the game but running into the "two hour surprise" as I like to call it... but I feel this time it is warranted. This game is rough as heck around the edges, as one would expect it to be for (assumedly) *just* hitting 1.0 and launching to the public. I happen to think the asking price is a bit high for a title that is frankly, being put into its proving ground/crucible stage. An even twenty I feel would go a longer way, when it comes to luring in curious buyers. All that being said, there is a lot of heart here. I enjoyed the character interactions and dialogue in the tutorial section, even if there was an odd moment where Julia's voice went Brit for a line or two. The nod I found myself smiling at the most was when they address the "commander" and the mercs present looked to the screen. I admit, I am a sucker for things like that. The gameplay so far has been good! Tighter than expected and definitely scratching that XCOM itch. The customization needs a lot of work, but I am happy it is there as I am also a sucker for making my operators look a certain way and more or less match, like a proper private professional army.
I also feel I have to say this due to the one negative review: Shotguns have the lowest AP rating, so it stands to reason you are only going to shred an armored enemy's armor and do little else. I happen to KNOW for a fact this is how it is as I tested the AP power of the tutorial squad in both missions before you get your "Avenger" to reference XCOM2.

I'm willing to be forgiving, but not ignorant of a game that shows promise and I really think Warhounds shows this promise. I'm a Refund Ranger, just like any other person who is careful with their money. It isn't exactly easy for me to go over the two hour mark with Steam titles these days, but this game kept my attention. I just personally find it disheartening that one negative review that really doesn't even objectively point out the game's flaws is enough for so many people to pass on a game that deserves at least an honest chance. Like literally the only valid complaint in the one negative review to me is the camera. Yes, the camera angle could use improvement, as no one finds it entertaining to look at the inside of terrain as one of your operators blows someone away. I could go on, but this is a review, not Mt. Soapbox.
So far, this game while certainly in need of polish, I feel is in a decent playable state.

However, while I noticed I didn't miss those sorts of high chance shots, I also noticed that a hit doesn't always guarantee a crit or a full kill. I have, at least once, gotten close to where I had an 80% or higher chance to hit and only "scratch" the enemy.
The voice acting is fine, and I find myself so far liking how the cast is obviously having fun.
Controller support for sure! Being able to plug my gamepad in and play Warhounds was unironically one of the most exciting parts of my gameplay so far.
Cons:
The asking price, for sure. I'm sorry, but I just don't feel this game should be 30 bucks. (29.74 specifically for me as a Yank)
The character customization/outfitting, while enjoyable for me who likes making everyone look similar and simple, needs quite a bit of TLC. XCOM's customization has never been super stellar, which is exactly why in this department I can't be anywhere near as lenient. You can do at least as well as Firaxis, Everplay!
Overall, right now my score for this game is a solid 6/10 (slightly above average). Definitely room for improvement, because I know full well that 1.0 isn't the end of this game's development cycle. When you think you're done improving, that is when you fail. And please, if anyone is going through the reviews, trying to decide based on these if you are even going to bother, don't listen to the negative reviews that don't even bother to put their gripes into a digestible perspective. However, while I noticed I didn't miss those sorts of high chance shots, I also noticed that a hit doesn't always guarantee a crit or a full kill. I have, at least once, gotten close to where I had an 80% or higher chance to hit and only "scratch" the enemy.
The voice acting is fine, and I find myself so far liking how the cast is obviously having fun.
Controller support for sure! Being able to plug my gamepad in and play Warhounds was unironically one of the most exciting parts of my gameplay so far.

The asking price, for sure. I'm sorry, but I just don't feel this game should be 30 bucks. (29.74 specifically for me as a Yank)
The character customization/outfitting, while enjoyable for me who likes making everyone look similar and simple, needs quite a bit of TLC. XCOM's customization has never been super stellar, which is exactly why in this department I can't be anywhere near as lenient. You can do at least as well as Firaxis, Everplay!
Overall, right now my score for this game is a solid 6/10 (slightly above average). Definitely room for improvement, because I know full well that 1.0 isn't the end of this game's development cycle. When you think you're done improving, that is when you fail. And please, if anyone is going through the reviews, trying to decide based on these if you are even going to bother, don't listen to the negative reviews that don't even bother to put their gripes into a digestible perspective. They have better equipment, better armor, do more damage, And become highly skilled and gain accuracy if you take out a "leader" other enemies hit you more often and do more damage than you can. They are more accurate with a shotgun at extreme range than one of your snipers at medium range.
Numerous time a sniper with 100% hit chance did 1 point of damage. While enemy AKs hit multiple times at long range and destroy your team. Your first scenarios at Newbie level are 4 v 8. then 4 v 10/ 11 then 4 v 12 to 15. Each time there armor weapons and improves your does not.
If you play at veteran level you will fight 30 + and will have to use pure defensive tactics to survive. Most of the time you won't.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tFirst i want to make something clear, i love this game type. I grown up on X-com and Jagged Alliance. I wanted to love this game soo much. But this game is at best on its alte Alpha not iss 1.0 fully released version. Its a cheap mix knockoff of the new X-com and the old Jagged alliance (even the music is roughly the same). The whole execution is 10-15 years late HOMM3 got more life on the map and between battles than this game and HOMM is from the previous century. The graphics have several unpollished executions and it is adveritzed as a no fake rng game but i still miss 2-3 times in a row for a 90% success chance.
As I said it at the beggining I wanted to love the game, but good god its not finnished and in this state i do not recomend the game unless you get it in a really good discount or for free.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

That is a flat out lie. The entire game relies on RNG and it is as ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ as it is in most of these games.
Failing covert missions that have a 5% fail chance? No need to reload, the outcome is predetermined. Fun if that happens to 3 missions with a 5%, 7% and 8% fail chance in a row. That's a 0.024% probability of happening. Can it happen? Yep with the aforementioned probability. Does it happen in this game? Absolutely.
You will miss your 80 or 90% shots, you will not be able to consistently flank to get 100%. Your guns are NOT deadly, you still need to break body armor and do random damage numbers etc.
So as usual the RNG is fake af, you cannot change outcomes with loading, and you're better off playing modded XCOM, Xenonauts, JA3, or anything that has some soul.
I regret that I'm past the refund timer on this.

No point-blank misses and no bogus randomness." - Partially true, if you define point blank as exactly being in an adjacent square with no fence in between you and your target. No bogus randomness on the other hand is a lie since it is a seeded RNG. you can reload and do the same sequence of actions from before your reload and the outcome remains exactly the same.
So the TL;DR; is not about miss chances in general or anything, it is about the developers lie about RNG. THAT is the problem, had they not lied about it, this review would not exist in it's form.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Honestly speaking - there is nothing genuine to this copy cat of a game.
For the price tag given, you should be able to expect more than an audacious conmixture of, say, "borrowed" concepts and ideas.
It is literally nothing more than a blunted mash up of Jagged Alliance 3 and XCOM 2, both of which do so much more gameplay-wise.
I ended up missing some aspects of these two that did not make it into the plagiarization -
more than enjoying this game.
The shallow presentation, and the secrecy about it's original name and the funding do the rest to give me an uncomfortable feeling even playing this game.
If the devs weren't that open of where they stole the ideas, I'd call it an unapologetic scheme.
Don't get me wrong - it's not a bad product. It's just not living up to the standards of it's obvious sources.
After all, the price inflated for export tips my scale not to recommend it.
Just play the originals or wait for an offer if you still want to support this.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
