I actually stumbled upon this game after having found the Star Wars Interworlds mod for it, which overhauls the entire game and turns it into star wars. The mod itself is exceptional, if you're willing to put in the work to learn the game and the mod, it's by far the best all encompassing star wars game out there. The game is very smooth for me, even during the huge space battles I've had with tens of star destroyers and almost a thousand TIEs. Would highly recommend, although the beginning progression can be painfully slow, and you're almost defenseless early game against fleet tactics around you.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

tldr: The game is as wide as an ocean and as deep as a puddle. The combat is mediocre. The economic gameplay is terrible. The story and atmosphere of the game world are rock bottom. The developers manage to make the game only worse as it develops.
A game about space flight doesn't have any proper... space flight - because the developers, in their genius, decided to remove collision from the game. So now you don't have spaceships in space, you have tofu in space.
Combat: The AI is hopeless in terms of its skills and was deliberately made strategically helpless by the developers - all game factions have limits (economy/fleets), making the factions no more dangerous than a child. Different factions used to have different playstyles, different strengths and weaknesses, different equipment... the factions differed in their level of technological development, which created very interesting gameplay and the world around them - but all of that has been reduced to nothing. Now everything is unified and looks the same.
The economy is a farce. No interest, no risk, no development – just make boxes, deliver boxes, sell boxes, buy new box-making machines. It's all done by slaves (in the sense of unpaid, perpetual employees), and you have no expenses. In the local economy, you're doomed to success within the first couple of hours of economic activity, after which it simply becomes pointless - you have virtually infinite money and nothing to spend it on. There are no goals either, because the plot is weak and insufficient. You can't help NPCs because they're useless, and you can't fight them because they're insanely weak. It's like boxing for 20 years and then going to fight kids on a playground - you win, but what's the point?
One of those amazing examples of how the game (mechanically) was better in the early versions than it is after all the changes the developers made to it after all the patches.
I returned to the game a couple of years after I last played it - they killed the space flight mechanics, and all the flavour of the different races were also removed. Now it's a faceless slop game with no real gameplay or atmosphere - and the story remains just as terrible too. I should probably think of this game as an animated desktop wallpaper app - because what else is it for, I don't know.
...oh yeah, one more thing. I can't forget how the developers, in a single-player game famous for having players play at a wide range of paces, tacked on a seasonal multiplayer with FOMO elements. Players were simply asking for co-op so they could explore space with friends/family, and instead they got FOMO elements in an otherwise serene single-player experience.
I get the feeling that some developers are trying to make the best possible game for release, and then, after release, another group of developers bets them on how badly they can screw it up.
I have a lot of experience playing a wide variety of games, and X4 holds the record for one of the worst post-release support I know of. I like their updates/DLCs in terms of visuals and music, but the gameplay aspect of the game's development is absolutely terrible. Seriously, people are usually advised to buy games after updates, but in this case, I would recommend buying the game only before the updates. It's amazing how much they could ruin a project with such great potential and with almost no competition - although maybe that was the reason for what happened?\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Your ship slides all the ♥♥♥♥ over the place, the throttle controls are imprecise and far too fast, and the handling just feels unresponsive. I absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate it, and it kills me because I really wanted to play the latest content.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

When you fully wipe the Xenon out of a sector and secure it for real-life days, the game engine triggers a script cycle that completely overrides the sandbox rules. Here is a breakdown of how the game's code "panics" and breaks its own rules:

quota galaxy="42": This is the literal hard boundary. If you destroy Xenon energy traders and the global count falls below 42, the engine's continuous universe check flags an immediate shortfall. It doesn't wait for standard economic build cues; it forcefully pushes a construction request to any surviving Xenon shipyard or wharf because the explicit condition galaxy="42" is broken.
This is what I am experiencing except there is this: energy trader quota is current and correct and there is also a quota for instant miner building in the xml

• The "Panic" Trigger: The game runs a continuous universe check. If you destroy a Xenon Energy Trader and the global number drops below the hardcoded quota galaxy="42", the engine completely ignores the state of the universe to fix it. It triggers an emergency initialization function.
2. Bypassing Sector Rules via the "God Script" (god.xml)
So first the Xenon Energy Traders build wharfs and shipyards; They do use OOS tactics to break through blockades and without there being an in-game mechanic to end the Xenon threat entirely since I spent Bazillions fighting the damn Xenon crisis (which I learned is triggered by researching - Fleet-wide Sensor Analytics) If you like getting ravaged by an unending Xenon enemy don't research that for GOD SAKE! PLEASE DON'T DO IT!.
Now every so often I find a Fully built Wharf or Power Station and I never see any ships; Which means the OOS (When you are not looking at the sector, the engine doesn't use physical ships to deliver parts.)
That is basically letting the AI break rules and calling it a win because the game runs faster. Great Expansion again; I love the weapon changes but they don't mean diddly if you can't save the galaxy from the Xenon.
3. Why It Builds From Nothing (The Low Attention Math Trick)
The reason you can sit at the gate with a massive blockade for days and still find a half-built Wharf behind you is due to how X4 calculates building out-of-sector (OOS).
When you are not looking at the sector, the engine doesn't use physical ships to deliver parts. It shifts to a code loop that looks like this:

I recommend the game to anyone that does not research Fleet-wide Sensor Analytics, or you can hate yourself, and long as the AI CAN BREAK IT'S OWN RULES, you also have the right to cheat them right back with the help of a mod or two!

But it's a commitment. Don't expect anything close to an intuitive start. Once you get past the initial frustrating learning curve, you can enjoy the game.
I still can't recommend it. I can't expect most people to bulldoggedly choose to punish themselves with the early game. Know what you're getting in to.

I had to go online and find a reddit post to tell me to fly around the station until I saw a tiny red dot. Suddenly I get a communication that now I need to go sabotage some ship somewhere. Okay, where is this ship? NO HELP FOR YOU! FIGURE IT OUT!
In the process of trying to figure it out, I'm fired upon by two ships and my little ship is destroyed. "I hope your air doesn't run out." Wait, what...?

There are multiple starting points / story lines that are extremely confusing as well. You'll get your first mission and probably screw it up, requiring you to google multiple things to muddle your way through it. The mission guides are extremely vague, and it's very difficult to understand the instructions they're giving you. The flight and combat systems are extremely twitchy and difficult to control. The user interfaces are very complicated and have many layers of complexity behind them.
Essentially you're going to be dropped into a massive universe with only a very basic understanding of how it all works. You'll spend hours trying to do even the most basic functions, and it's just not worth it. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI have put enough hours into this game to write a complete review. It is a very good game with a great deal going on a simulated background economy, shifting battlefields, dynamic resource fields. It is in a good place right now, but nowhere near what was promised.
What it gets right:
A background economy that runs whether or not you participate in it.
Shifting front lines and faction borders that make the universe feel unscripted.
Genuine scale: a single fighter can grow into an empire.
Several excellent soundtrack pieces that capture the vastness of space, plus decent race-specific themes.
Content diversity:
Weapons and equipment are largely copy-pasted across the Commonwealth factions.
The remaining races receive superficially different gear that performs almost identically.
A number of ship designs suffer from the same lack of imagination.
Audio:
Roughly half the soundtrack is generic filler.
The combat tracks are the weakest element the equivalent of an arcade shooter looping three songs for an entire campaign.
They are neither inspiring nor tense; they exist only to notify you that something is attacking you.
AI and challenge:
The AI is clunky and insufficiently reactive.
You can do an enormous amount in this game, but doing it essentially unopposed is not compelling.
Without intervention, the late game becomes management without challenge.
Updates and support:
The content delivered across updates has been enjoyable, and that part of the post-release support is genuinely appreciated.
Update 9.00, the "Empire Update" of June 2026, did bring real quality-of-life work: shift-queued RTS-style orders, engine, shield and weapon statistics shown in the loadout screen, ammunition reloading on the HUD.
What it also brought, by Egosoft's own description, is vastly improved turret accuracy, destroyers making more use of their main batteries, and reworked capital ship movement and alignment with attack targets.
The same update has L ships constantly pivoting to face their target a lumbering capital attempting to bring its main batteries onto a fighter. It is absurd to watch, and it does not suggest a great deal of effort went into how these ships are meant to behave.
Key features, however, remain unimproved after years of patching. The problems in this review are not new and they are not obscure.
The most recent update "improved" targeting to the point where ships now essentially never miss.
Quality of life:
Routine actions demand far too many clicks and far too much searching through menus to reach what you need.
Boarding operations have no progress notification a mod supplies one.
The UI has no custom tabs a mod supplies them.
Crew cannot be transferred to multiple ships at once again, a mod supplies it.
At empire scale these are not luxuries, they are basic ergonomics. That the community solved all three, and did so long ago, says everything about where the priorities sit.
The mod situation:
Beyond quality of life, the community has done outstanding work: additional ships and weapons, AI overhauls that make factions reactive and populate the universe with events and life.
Past a certain point mods stop being optional, they are what makes the experience good.
Many of these improvements should have shipped with the game, or been adopted once they existed and demonstrably worked.
To be fair, Egosoft does not block any of this. Workshop support is there, the modding tools are theirs, and mods do not cost you your achievements.
Verdict and my overall opinion:
The game has enormous potential waiting. Right now tho... It is overall an incomplete experience. I will keep playing this for a long while yet. But the studio needs to listen to its community and deliver what is being asked for. After all, the community is who is buying. May you always be blessed in your lives!

Currently i dont think there is any other game that hits all aspects X4 does and is therefore quite unique. My gripe with the game tends to be the difficulty (which in this case would be hard to balance), the two main enemy factions tend to die out extremely quickly and, or depending on, the seed fail to have an significant impact on the game.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

They shouldn't get stuck on the second part of the first mission in the game. Sure I get it..... SANDBOX.... do your own stuff, make your own story. I'm in my 40s, I've played dozens of sandbox (Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout, EVE Online, GTA, etc etc). BUT ALL OF THEM had a nice segue into the game play. All showed beginning players how to start to interact with the interface. All of them had decent to navigate systems and minigames to interact with (moving, scanning, fighting, mining, crafting, lockpicking, etc, etc.) This game, lets spend 30 minutes docking (cuz the mini-game is UNNECESSARILY finicky), lets spend 30-45 min finding a scan beacon, lets spend 30 min flying to a portal into a highway, into an accelerator, into a station, BLAH BLAH.
No part of this is fun! Yeah the graphics make it an updated Wing Commander with about 2% of the charm, 7 Million % the learning curve, and 100 Zillion % the annoyance factor. EVE ONLINE was more APPROACHABLE!! EVE ONLINE which took a college courses worth of time in Game WIkis to understand all the systems, yet allowed beginners to play the friggin game and get through some missions to get into it. You want to make a game with realistic fidelity, FINE, make it for all the hardcore astronaut wannabes. But for the rest of us who just want to play the game, allow people to automate the annoying minutae of actually flying and docking and aiming and scanning so you can get through the first godforsaken mission! Is that too much to ask?
The sad thing is from Youtube reviews, the guy was excited about it but said the learning curve is TOO HIGH. I'm like after EVE Online and Star Citizen, X4 can't be that bad?! OMG, I've never had a game frustrate me on mission 1. And I played ALL TUTORIALS including the very last combat sim, and re-Played some of them. Got stuck on mission 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
