Stats actually work, the leveling makes you stronger (enemies don't level up with you), the exploration is smooth, the map is jam packed with PoI's and fun little encounters. The animations are better than they have a right to be. The quests are creative, weird, and adorable. The voice acting is incredible.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI just finished my first playthrough of the Early access, and all I can say was that this game had me hooked right from landing on the chained shores. Lantern of the Laughless Saint is a quirky game with some very Morrowind undertones (as advertised!) but it cements its own identity without a doubt.
I believe at the time of writing this there is only 1 actually functioning ending so I'll update it later if needed.
First off, there is basically no hand holding at all, right from the start you are let into the world and told basically to figure it out. The game lays it out that you can move to immediately start interacting with the town or you can head straight for the tower; of which the latter I personally do not recommend. Your hub town has several NPC's all with their own littler quirks and weirdness to them: A man with a strange little die, a school drop-out, cursed man who took shoot for the moon a little to literally, and a man who is just VERY thirsty. Everyone is interesting and everything tied back to the main story later in, I cannot express how impressed I was and audibly gasped when I realized what those phantoms later in the game were! There are some issues with a particular body not showing up and I had to command it into the game unfortunately, and one quest that says there are building items found in the ruins nearby... not the ruins you are standing in on the coast, but rather in the large area around the tower. There is fast travel but a few locations sometimes randomly stop working. Not sure what causes this or why, but it was a bit annoying. I walked to where I wanted 90% of the time but when I really wanted to travel... it was nice to have. When I got access to anchor and return it because a gamechanger for immersion.
There are some obvious early access issues, sometimes they terrain doesn't full exist and what seems like a platform really isn't, or its just a slope of time kind. You will bounce of rocks that seems like you can land on them, and moving in the water is a bit weird. Helmets of lizardmen are hilarious as they are NOT in anyway shaped for their heads, really looks like they just threw it on and called it a day XD. I would like to see more cloaks as basically had the peasant cape the whole game. Most items are rather unique and feel like they are earned; in most cases. Sometimes quest rewards are really overshadowed by a spell. For example, I played a melee character and started fiddling with spells later. I got boots that let me levitate always but by that point I just had the most basic levitation spell and its really not a hassle to cast it ever 10 seconds when my magic regens so quickly. The main perk was moving quicker while levitating with the boots; but it felt kind of moot in all honestly.
The world is VERY open, exploration is by far reigning supreme and you can go wherever you want and the game does not use ANY map markers (which I beg the devs to never change). With that said though; a better quest log with better direction details would be nice; better yet conversation history to help keep track of things. The quests are mostly interesting and challenge you to look deeply into the world to find answers, often times with multiple different outcomes and paths you can take in order to solve them (Your choices do seem like at release they will heavily affect the outcome of the story). I'm very interesting in what other ending will show up at full release and what polish they will put into the gameplay.
Combat is very straightforward but it is a bit Janky and sometimes what seems to be a hit isn't or strikes from enemies (spearmen mostly) happen before they actually make contact; making blocking correctly a bit weird. I would also appreciate it GREATLY if spears actually had range... because they're spears. Though with how opponent melee works it might be better to just keep it as is. Spellcasting is a lot of fun and straightforward. You will get the ability to make your own spells far later in the storyline depending on what choices you make (earlier if you pick certain options). I did notice that enemies often will start circling you but only 2-3 of them will attack at any given moment; leading to a carousel of bodies circling you but no-one actually doing anything. I couldn't really tell you if the difficulty setting actually did anything, when I raised it up as I felt like I was too strong I didn't notice much of anything happening. I would like for combat to be a bit more impactful, and I feel blocking with a 2handed weapon should still hurt you or something. Yes you can get a shield which reduces the stamina use but that VERY quickly isn't much of an issue when your stamina regens so fast from perks. Enemy spellcasters on the other hand... ouch. All in all very fun.
The story is a bit scattered here and there but you can pick up on what's going on fairly quickly as long as you are paying attention. Its actually quite interesting and required a bit of digging to get a better idea of roughly what might be happening. I recommend reading everything you can as you explore the isle, a book by a campfire might tell a story that can help you find something or someone, that story left on a writing desk actually could be a quest item, what seems like some random journal you find on some random altar might actually be important later on.
I also really hope they expand on enemy variety later. You get really tired seeing the same frog people for half the tower and seeing the same skeletons for most of the map all of which basically use the same weapons. I would like to see more enemies that can utilize both spells and melee items if needed. Archers often swap to melee when you get close and they do their best to stay away from you which is great. Frost enemies will slow you down while keeping a distance which makes them properly annoying as a melee user... and I enjoyed it so much.
Yes it has some bugs, yes you can phase through the map at times, yes sometimes fast travel might not work correctly, and yes... things might not make sense. But I feel it actually adds to the craziness that is happening on the island and as far as I'm concerned... its a feature.

I haven't written a review for a video game in a while, but coming off of my fist (and assuredly not last) playthrough, The Lantern of the Laughless Saint is really the only game of its type that has come out in the last decade. The Bethesda DNA is extremely thick and notable, and the game is weird as all hell. I am watching this game and this developer closely now.

The game plays just like you would expect, everything you do contributes to your various skills and unlike more modernized systems doesn't trap you in a particular build, you become what you do and you also get points and perks to allocate yourself meaning there is no perfect way to build a character and you can be good with anything as long as you invest some time or points into it.

We never see indie studios attempt Bethesda style RPGs because they are incredibly complex to craft, not even other AAA studios have really attempted them, but somehow NerveLab has hit it out the park. Game is a little grungy looking, but it has great art direction that makes it work. Great soundtrack, good voice acting, fun NPCs with plenty of side quests, combat doesn't feel too stiff, and some interesting lore so far. For better or for worse, it even has all the jank you'd expect from a Bethesda RPG- but nothing game breaking so far (although co-op can be glitchy). The only real complaint i could muster here is that there doesn't appear to have the deep customization that you'd expect from a Bethesda RPG, but this is still an early access game. This game is a complete love letter to a genre that doesn't get many games made, 1000% worth the asking price\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI bought this game for me and my friend immediately when it was released - I am slightly biased because this is exactly my kind of game - The Lantern of the Laughtless Saint a fantastic "Coop Morrowind Simulator" that is filled with familiar RPG mechanics with their own unique style. There are some imperfections to be expected indie games but NerveLabs put a lot of genuine effort and craft into their world environment - such as good NPC voice acting & dialogue - interesting and strange storyline but most importantly good combat and variety of race and class types.
Solo gamers can enjoy taking their time in single-player play fast or take their time and methodically steal every dish and utensil from every house (just like in Morrowind) with sneak and longbow stealth attacks or heavy melee and block combos that are satisfying.
Social gamers and mutual fans of Elder Scrolls and other RPGs can gather a party and adventure together - survive close calls in high level areas and get revived to make exciting loot runs back to rown.
Skills level up with use and can be improved with level-up along with perks to make character builds that fit your play style.
I am just getting started with this game, and I can already tell my friends and I will enjoy playing this a lot more over the next few weeks.

The world and lore are really interesting, the story is intriguing and a little unsettling, the NPCs are quirky and unique and fun (watch out for the bread seller... yeesh!) and I can't stop playing. It plays like an older Elder Scrolls game (which makes sense as it was inspired by Morrowind but without reading a novel every time you're talking to an NPC). Graphics are nothing to write home about, but I think that's a stylistic choice. Combat feels very Morrowind, too... so make of that what you will lol. Definitely recommend this for anyone who enjoyed Morrowind and/or an old school Bethesda RPG.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI would definitely recommend this game to those who loved the Morrowind experience. They do a lot of things well, but I also have some notes for improvement.
The Good
TLotLS gets a lot things right.
Character creation options are wide spread, in terms of races and skins, each offering their own unique strengths and weaknesses, and interesting lore.
The skill system, and how it affects your stats, like health and stamina, is truly unique to the genre, and their perk system gives you direction and something to strive for, without being bogged down by useless intermediary steps that youll never use.
Skill and perk synergy makes sense.
Their magic system in conjunction with the perks and skills makes it feel like you can actually play a mage. Too many of these, the Elder Scrolls included, gives you the option for magic, but it always feels supplementary to builds, even if you chase it. This game does NOT have that problem. You can play a full caster and not run out of magic a quarter of the way through the fight, and the skills lets you scale spells, so youre never stuck. Absolutely inspired.
The world is interesting. The lore that Lantern brings to the table is unique, interesting, and engaging. I found myself constantly pressing for more information because of how deep the lore goes, and I would love to see future spin off games that explore the over arching lore. There's clear inspiration taken from a variety of sources, like one of the moons being a giant face that looks similar to the moon from Majora's Mask, but its not a blatant rip off. Its been made to be their own.
For being a relatively small map, they have crammed a ton of stuff into the island. This is a huge one for me. Too many open world games have painfully empty maps and their locations are tiny and uninspired. I constantly crave for Elder Scrolls level of stuff and too often am i disappointed. I love having a metric ton of locations to explore, where everything has its own lore, whether its blatant, implied, or left to my interpretation. Lantern gives me all kinds of places that I can guess, find out, or infer. There is no shortage, and they keep adding more. 10/10
The devs actually listen to their community and they've kept their promise about updates. This one is huge for me. Too often do developers make promises and say they listen to their community, and then go off and do whatever they want, or even worse, in recent history, tell gamers to get bent. The devs here constantly listen to feedback and make changes or update the game to account for it, and the changes they do make, make perfect sense. They listen, and they're thoughtful. The game also updates every couple of weeks or so, just like they promised.
Now the bad
I'll just get this one out of the way. For those of you who care about graphics, its retro as hell. The game looks like its from the very early 2000's, especially the character models. Personally, I dont think it should matter, because the gameplay is phenomenal. But some people really care about this, so its only fair to mention. To the devs, i dont think its an actual issues.
The armor on the beastmen models looks ridiculous.
Speaking of graphics, this one i actually do take a little bit of issue with. The armor models fit fine on any of the humans, but all of the armor becomes distorted, overly bulky, and frankly, hilariously ridiculous on the beast men. What I would recommend to the devs is that they create special models and textures that actually fit the beast men. Make the armor special and make sense. Look at the models that Larian Studios did for their Lizard Men in the Divinity Original Sin series. It included armoring the tails, and coverings for their paws. I know its more to do, but it would make Lantern a cut above the rest.
The Directions.
I am all for the Morrowind style of "you get info from an NPC and have to follow directions" style of RPG, that naturally encourages exploration. Its one of the reasons I bought the game. HOWEVER! Your directions need to be SPECIFIC AND ACCURATE. This is one area the game fails miserably. Too often are their directions for quests insanely vague. "Here go find this guy that got lost in the woods on the west side of the island." Ok, well there are a lot of woods on the west side of the island and the west side in the devs minds encompasses everything left of center. That's simply too much area to explore for one guy. Oh that quest specifically? Youre told hes on the far side of the island. Where was he? On the second terrace of the island, closer to the middle. The directions and the matching location dont line up. Another quest involves you finding a hidden Wizard Enclave. Youre told its somewhere south of the big tower that takes up the center of the island. I searched everywhere south. Turns out the dude was almost directly West. I could go on and on with examples like this.
What made Morrowind so successful is the directions were specific and if you followed them to a T, you would get to your destination, or very very close. I understand the immersion aspect here. In real life, a person genuinely wouldnt know exactly where someone ran off to, only that they went west, but in a game, it just becomes a frustrating experience to be told that this person is near this ruin, only to search everywhere around that location and find them way off course because you got mad, stopped looking, went to do something else, and just happened upon the guy you were looking for originally. Which actually brings me to my other point, concerning directions.
The directions are not logged in your journal. I understand the devs vision for old school gaming, where part of the experience was outside of the game. However, there is a reason games stopped doing this. I shouldnt have to eat up space on my computer by taking a screenshot of non repeatable dialogue, that I might miss because Im not fast enough or Im having bad brain fog, or maybe im just really enjoying playing and im totally immersed. Point being LOG THE DIRECTIONS IN THE JOURNAL!!! This is another way Morrowind was successful. You had the journal description, with the directions, but you also could look up the actual conversation for the exact specifics if the journal entry was too vague. This was pivotal in Morrowind and MADE THE MODEL WORK. So please take note devs!
Enemy scaling feels off.
One thing I really like is the ability to defeat a higher level opponent because I have the skill to do so. Lantern does give me that. I was able to take on a level 35 at level 9 because I used my skills well and took advantage of the enemy's weaknesses. It was insanely difficult, but I won. I love this please dont change anything in that regard. Where my issue comes in is that there doesnt seem to be variety in monster level. You have a lot of low level monsters, like 1-5, a few in the 9-15 range, but there doesnt seem to be anything between that and the level 35 demon bird apes. And as far as Im aware, (i could be dead wrong here) theres nothing higher than around level 40. Except for a level 65 boss that I found. So i think the game would benefit from a wider variety of enemies to fight. I imagine this is already being implemented, as the last update saw an increase to variety, but its still worth mentioning.
To conclude:
All in all, Lantern of the Laughless Saint has been really fun to play, holding true to exactly what they promised: An open world, Morrowind inspired adventure game, with wonderfully deep lore, plenty of content crammed into the island, and excellent mechanics that are inspired but unique. There are just a few design elements that definitely need improving, and it is still in active development. But I'm hoping that the devs continue their stellar approach, in their consistent update schedule, and listening to the fans of this game.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I completed the game, explored so much, did so much, and only had a few visual bugs. I don't even remember the specifics of those bugs, that's how insignificant they were. But nothing that FORCED me to have to restart from the very beginning, though, like with modern Bethesda games. And the team is still actively fixing bugs, instead of dropping support and hoping the community releases mod to do it for them! They have Co-Op, too, so you can force a friend to play with you!

Hop on with the bois and just adventure. We spent quite a while just going around to random dungeons, not even tackling the story. The combat is fun, just the right amount of Morrowindesque jank. The enemies and biomes are decently varied. The multiplayer doesn't tether the players strictly, they can go all over the place. The only thing I'd add if I could is proximity chat.
It's worth the money. It's fun as hell. When I'm on here with my pals I feel like a kid again, plundering the world for all it has to offer.
