Writing this at launch, I can say it is a little buggy, and needs some polish, but most atypical for the subgenre, the developers are actively striving to do just that, and the game has seen numerous fixes in the first few days alone, with more general balancing and content on the way.

In its current state I'd say its worth the price of entry if you just want to see an indie take on a spiritual successor to Morrowind, but with a little polish, I think Lantern could easily grow to outshine its influences.\t\t\t\t\t

I can tell that there is care being poured into this game, you have to look no further than the map: a 3-d, highly detailed look at the world you're in where you can even spot some of the enemies if you look close enough.
And that's such an important detail to this game because there are no quest waypoints, no yellow line or arrows to follow, just basic directions... and it works!

There's a darkness and a weirdness to this game that I haven't seen since Morrowind. Other games like Tainted Grail and Avowed have tried to do something similar, but there's something about this game that I find especially interesting. The game throws you into the world with a vague goal, but its up to you to go out and explore and figure out what that even means. And you'll find things that are bizarre, awesome and creepy.

And speaking about darkness, your character's eyes actually adjust to the dark after some time (just a neat thing I noticed that I can't recall seeing in recent games).

I should mention that this game is far from polished, which I wasn't expecting it to be right away. I imagine (and hope) the devs will continue to make this something special. Some of the few bugs I've seen so far have to do with armor and weapon visuals and some enemies despawning and reappearing after I've killed them.

I also hope there are some improvements to the weapon handling. While bows feel good, I feel like arrows drop too quickly. I'd also like to see shields being a touch more responsive after a swing, and for there to be a larger hit distance for melee weapons (it feels like you have to run right into an enemy to hit it with a sword). Hit markers for larger things like giant slimes are also a bit odd, you basically need to hit it square in the middle for it to count, which is odd for something larger than your character.

Overall, in a world where there are AAA games that feel like something churned out by [pick your most hated AI program], I'm particularly optimistic about what indie devs are creating, because they keep coming up with unique and compelling experiences like this.

\n\t\t\t\t\tThe Lantern of the Laughless Saint is nothing short of an amazing RPG. I had the pleasure of playtesting this game for over 200 hours. At every turn, the developers were hands on and intently listened to feedback. In doing so they have crafted a world that recreates the same magic that exists in the TES franchise. Every time I play the game, I discover new locations and more secrets to uncover. The gameplay is punchy and satisfying with the game providing the player with numerous ways to play the game.

\n\t\t\t\t\tAs someone who has sunk a bit of time into this so far, I recommend it.

Pros:
- ♥♥♥♥ you Todd Howard.
- Game feels very Morrowind-esque to a point where it definitely nailed the aesthetic of weird alien landscape and strange creatures running around.
- Combat is a massive step up from Morrowind.
- Tons of areas to explore. I might of explored around 20% of the map in 26 hours, which is par for the course on what anyone would expect from a morrowind style game.
- Plot line seems solid so far. Also tons of side quests.
- Possible Pro/Con - Game also does not hold your hand like Morrowind. Will have tons of people in the reviews ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that they need markers to walk them through everything. Guaranteed.

Cons:
- Bugs, bugs, bugs
- Alchemy menu needs a rework/update to be more efficient.
- Equipment menu for items needs to pull them all to the top that you have equipped or have a seperate tab that doesn't let you sell those items at the merchant.
- Jump scares from those stupid ass black starfish whispering at you.
- Some of the quests are bugged out. I've run into it on two occasions where I had to go back on saves to try and fix the issue.
- Was accused of stealing something in town randomly even though I hadn't stolen anything and had been standing still.
- Needs more buyable good stuff from merchants. I would like someone other than Pichess trying to sexually engage me by trying to "Lighten your load" or commenting about my heavy bulging pockets.
- Tower feels massive to a point where its just empty space. Needs more filler.

Overall, great game so far. Looking forward to it coming out of early access.

\n\t\t\t\t\tLaughless Saint is a decent Morrowind clone that is fun when it works - except that it clearly still needs a lot of work to be in a truly playable state and has a lot of bugs that make it a hard recommend right now until they're fixed.

I want to start by saying that this game makes my system run quite hot for a game that really doesn't look all that much more advanced than Morrowind did, even with the frame limiter set to 60 FPS. Morrowind was a game that ran on 32-meg GPUs and had fancy water effects if you had the luxury of having a DX8 card. While I understand that expecting those kind of requirements on today's bloated game engines is unrealistic, I would expect that it shouldn't tax a $2000 machine built in 2025. This can probably be attributed to the game using raytraced lighting, which it really doesn't need and shouldn't have. UE5 was probably a poor choice of engine.

Then there's the problem of the game randomly softlocking. It doesn't freeze, it's just that the controls become non-responsive while the game continues to run. I don't know what causes it (I think it's containers) but I had it lock up on me three times in an hour and a half. I get that Laughless Saint is trying to emulate Morrowind, but I don't think it needed to emulate the crashes. I also get that the crashes will probably be fixed, but that's why I'm saying it's not worth a buy at this particular moment in development. It also doesn't help that the game has an unskippable startup video that takes forever, which makes restarting it after a crash suck.

Finally, there's the fact that this game is trying to be Morrowind but doesn't have proper keyboard and mouse controls. Unlike the real TES games (where you can bind weapons to hotkeys), you have to equip weapons and spells twice: first in the menu, and then in a wheel that has all of the weapons and spells you've equipped on it. The annoyance here is that any time you perform an action that isn't attacking something, the game unequips your weapon and defaults you to unarmed combat, which is great when you walk into a group of enemies and forget that you don't have your sword equipped. Good keyboard controls are an absolute must for a game like this, even if it's a multi-plat.

I want to reiterate that this isn't a bad game, it's just that it needs more development time and probably shouldn't have been released until some of these bugs were fixed. The lack of mod support is also a bit concerning given how much of Morrowind's value was in user-made mods. If you're going to buy this, I'd wait at least a few months.

I agree with not having quest markers in the game, but with a map this large we cannot be expected to remember where every NPC and Area of Interest are. I spent over an hour trying to find out where pichess' house was because he got stuck on a bed behind a locked door that was not named. I had to resolve the quest by having a glitchy conversation with him as he slept by interacting with his sleeping body through the back window, but I feel like the entire process would've been a lot smoother if we just knew what the general towns layout was on the map\t\t\t\t\t

On top of that, exxcellent voice acting with a much wider range than even Elder scrolls games. Then add an exceptional soundtrack, modernized movement and combat while still maintaining that old school feel, a unique art style with a penchant for an acid trip and you're left with a game that just feels like home. I feel like the developer understands what is so appealing about Morrowind, without outright copying it one to one, and I think they'll deliver more on future updates.
