\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI've described the past two Sucker For Love games as "Pure nightmare fuel in a cutesy anime dating sim wrapper," but this is the first in the series to fall below that mark. Honestly, I'm having trouble putting my thoughts into words because I wouldn't call it a "bad" experience, but it's not quite as exciting.
There's no real jump-scares, nor does it lean into the existential dread or cosmic horror the way previous games had, and the weight or humor of the romance is surprisingly lacking. You can get through the whole game while slamming the door right in the horror's face, and none of it seems to be trying very hard to get in despite all the build-up. There's an overarching cosmic threat, but it doesn't really *do* anything unless you make the obviously bad choices, and even then it rarely shows up personally in any detail.
You find six differently colored objects 3 times and it's over. That's it. There's only the one level and it's done. The love interest spends most of the game just sitting and staring, and you occasionally answer the door. The end. We go from borderline survival-exploration horror back to sitting in one room, doing less than we did in the first game.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThe eldritch horror dating sim series does it a game with a game that is both charming, cute, and funny while still managing to have moments of genuine terror and unsettling scenarios/visuals. In some ways this one feels smaller than the previous games, having only one run through really as opposed to the first and second games having their multiple chapters with changes to objectives and what/who you're interacting with/fighting changing with each chapter. This game it's just you, a meteorite, and 3 segments of finding things in your apartment to keep the flame lit and feed her color. But the number of options you have, the way things change depending on what sort of stuff you feed to her, the slight randomness to who shows up at your door, the dozen or so endings that all depend on how you go through things. The game may feel like the smallest and shortest one but it simultaneously feels so much bigger and more open than the other two.
As usual the sound design is stellar. The voice actors nail their characters and all manage to hit where they feel they need to on the spectrum of cute to funny to unsettling. The writing is good here though this may be the protagonist I least enjoyed playing as. He comes off a bit more of an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. There were a couple minor typos it seemed with a repeated word or a word that felt like the wrong word in some of the protagonist's dialog but the text for every voiced line was fine at least.
This one does lack the big final challenge of fighting off stuff and testing your knowledge of things that the first two games had. Those final segments did a good job of emphasizing the horror and putting some tension into things and it was a little sad to not see a similar segment to this game but I think the story and design of this one wouldn't have worked with that kind of climax so it's fine without it.
Ultimately if you liked the first two games you'll probably like this one. Balances humor and horror perfectly in a charming little package and I hope they find more ways to expand on this franchise in the future. There is a seemingly ironic veneer on the surface of these games: the idea of smooching Cthulhu being the ridiculous idea at the core of the series. The second series entry - Date to Die For - attempted to add more horror elements to the mix, but often undercut itself by dwelling too much in the irony of the concept.
Crush Landing addresses these issues by being a lot more sincere. The monster girl present for this entry is a lot more nebulous than "big titty squid lady". This gives the game more leeway to play it straight, since it's not adherent to funny character designs. Crush Landing is truly such a charming game, very short and sweet (took just under 5 hours to get every ending in one sitting) and the characters are all so endearing. I really enjoyed the meshing of the styles of the previous games (as someone who always preferred First Date over Date To Die For) with slightly lower risk puzzle solving + I think Hheily might be my favorite of the datables thus far! I love her so very dearly (I do wish they utilised her form mimic gimmick a little more it could've had such comedic potential sigh)

The sprites are very creative and colorful and the vibe is just captivating. The story is also quite a surprise. It's a bit different and more grounded, but the whole idea is interesting to say the least. The whole neighbor arc alone is very memorable. I think all of my feedback below stands: There's a lot more endings, sure, but in the end, I feel like we got so few interactions with Hheily that she's really just another side characters. The best interaction with her happens in the final moment of the story, and I really wished there was more to it than that scene. I understand that any good story is supposed to let you feel wanting more, but in this case, I feel like I didn't even get enough to get invested properly, unfortunately.

However, the truth is that the series more and more departs from what made the previous games interesting as so so so many interactions within the story happens with characters that are not the protagonists, nor in the support of said protagonists. I left Date To Die For (Suckers 2) barely knowing anything about R'oksi and her relationship with the protagonist, but it was still interesting for its persistence themes. I left First Date (Suckers 1) knowing both Estir and L'netta very well and believing the protagonist's drive and romance.
Crush landing stars a nascent cosmic entity, so a lot of run-time is spent establishing knowledge and communication. By the time you both have a full blown mature conversation, the game's kind of already over. Hheiley is definitively cute, but so, so, so many of the game's interactions are in relation to what's happening around her, and not in relation to her. I feel like I left the game barely knowing what the relationship was, aside from like a protector/protegee one, and I think that's a shame. I will see once I 100% it if that changes, but right now I've achieved the "true ending" despite screwing up a lot within 2.5 hours.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
