\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tAwful, CA, just awful. I will keep this review negative until you fix the game. So many bugs have not even been addressed, and on top of that you introduce new ones.
Here are the things that needs fixing:
BUGS FROM THE ORIGINAL
- Siege pathfinding: High unit counts cause units to ignore orders during sieges.
- Defensive AI inactivity: AI naval units get stuck at map edges. AI land units refuse to act.
- Parrot guns: Missing or broken smoke effects.
- Trait scaling: Traits like Brave/Courageous/Heroic do not scale properly.
- "Zombie" Yari Ashigaru: Routed units stay in Yari Wall and continue killing enemies.
- AI Yari Wall misuse: AI uses Yari Wall only when defending, never while attacking.
- AI General behavior: Generals suicidal/kamikaze into battle.
- Fire delay: Firing delays present in "Fire by Rank" and units cannot move during "Kneel Fire."
- Artillery targeting: Shots do not target the center of enemy units.
- Rebel Mon glitch: Rebels display the Chosokabe Mon or the last selected clan's Mon.
- Ships cannot sink.
- Broken morale stack: Morale debuffs/maluses fail to stack.
- Missing unit: Ikko-Ikki clan lacks access to Warrior Nuns from their own DLC.

The whole point of the community wanting these 'old' games ported to 64-bit is better stability and performance, which this game fails miserably at. Instead, they gutted the game of Steam Workshop support and it runs noticeably worse than other modern titles (3K and WH3). They delisted the original game and repackaged it as a new “Complete Edition” at a higher price. The “discount” is also time-gated to 1 month for previous Shogun 2 owners so there is no guarantee they will fix all the issues before it runs out. Absolutely shameful.
The performance is genuinely abysmal. It is the worst-optimized Total War game since Attila and early Warhammer 3. Battle FPS is somewhat decent (~60 FPS) and playable but campaign FPS barely crosses 40. Mind you, this is still just the first 1-2 turns of the early game. If you want to play this game for the new minor factions, they have zero unique clan traits so its basically just a change of starting location.
During the first battle, I ordered the general to charge into the enemy bow ashigaru and then ordered him to run away. The moment I clicked on another unit, the run-away command was canceled for no reason and my general got stuck there, unable to find a path out. This happened in the very first battle of the campaign. It is actually shambolic.

1. I changed the voice language to Japanese, then tried changing it back to English, it broke it, had to verify game files.
2. The HDR/lighting is absolutely brutal. This game is horrific to look at to say the least.
3. Countless graphical issues.
I cannot stress enough. The lighting/shadows are really horrible, it's really unplayable in my opinion, and the gamma/brightness sliders do no favors. Not everything should attempt to look super realistic.

Until they fix the bugs and make the sale permanent, I would hold off on this or just go see the countless different youtube videos explaining the issues. This game fundamentally fails at being a remaster. It does not fix bugs which were present 15 years ago, but instead adds new ones. It does not actually 'upgrade' the graphics, but replaces it with imprecise textures which have been simply slapped on to the models without considering the deliberate placing of art in the original (some cities are now in lakes: they weren't in the original, and they aren't in real life). Certain models even have less polygons (looking at the faction select screen in particular feels playing the PlayStation 1 - on a remaster!!!).
Most damningly, the art in this was advertised as being lovingly handmade by a team of people who were themselves fans of the original Shogun 2, and yet the new cutscenes clearly use (poorly - it must be said) AI: there are multiple instances of characters in the new cutscenes with incorrect number of digits and even missing limbs(!).
Sadly, though it is heavily discounted for the first month, I don't think there's a world in which this ever *could* be fixed... To replace all the textures again, redo all the cutscenes (actually by hand this time), and to fix both the new and old bugs, would simply require a new remaster.

Bring in veteran YouTubers, modders, and community members to test it before release. I'm pretty sure many of them would gladly help, possibly even for free, because they genuinely love the game. They know its mechanics, its long-standing issues, and what the community actually wants.
And if you don't have the time, budget, or resources to do a proper remake? Then just release the improvements as a free patch for existing owners. Fix the bugs, modernise the game, and let people enjoy it.
Instead, CA somehow chose the worst of both worlds: charging longtime fans for an upgraded edition that still has problems, while creating a separate mod ecosystem and removing the original version from standalone sale on Steam.

After years of criticism, you'd think CA would have learned something by now. Instead of rebuilding trust, they're selling a half-hearted facelift of one of their greatest games. If this is the level of care we can expect, I'm genuinely worried about Total War: Warhammer 40,000.

The 2012 version of Shogun 2 is still very playable in 2026. Exactly what CA were trying to achieve with this update is a bit of a mystery - because as far as I can see the changes are:
Woeful contrast and lighting to the point where the action is just not readable on the screen. Over-dark shadows and over-bright highlights. I spent 20 minutes faffing about with the in-game gamma and brightness and my screen, like I'm trying to adjust the seat on a rental car. After finishing I feel that the game doesn't look much better and ultimately the action is sludgy and unreadable, just as it is in many of the newer CA releases. Lovely for magazine screenshots, near unworkable in gameplay. I have never had to do this in any other game that I have played.
Plus: uneven performance. Start a battle at 120fps, finish somewhere around 30. This game doesn't look good enough to chug more than Warhammer.
Finally: The new shaders are a bit ♥♥♥♥. There's some screen space stuff going on that makes seagulls have 100-foot-tall reflections. Reflections overall are fairly terrible in this release and the new water shaders obscure visibility of the action with overdark shadows and overbright highlights, distracting ghosting, flickering reflections and other ugly artefacts.

They added some enb, some reshade, slapped the word "complete edition" and charged $39.99 for it (with the limited 75% discount for the owners of the original game)
The only good thing, that they did, was the interface scaling for higher resolutions. And that's it!
They didn't even bother to fix those said bugs!
Community literally couldn't fix that, because people still don't have the neccessary tools! And what CA does? They just bastardize Akashiro's mod (based on Sara Temer's discovery) and call it a day!
2. Craftworks, Iron, Silk and Wood buildings in RotS campaign still don't have their icon (which they did have in vanilla Sengoku campaign)
3. Modern flag in Boshin campaign still has lantern hanging in the air during night battles
4. Rank by fire still takes too much time to trigger
5. If your unit has more than 4 clickable abilities, next ones don't have toggle sound
6. Units keep spamming generic response, because they don't have correct voice lines assigned to them (nor recorded by VAs)
7. Rebels' flag is still bugged on the campaign map. Instead of their flag (in the bottom left corner) they still have Chosokabe mon and it switches to the last clan's flag you clicked before clicking on rebels' army again
8. There are still no grappling hooks for units. FYI, CA, Japanese did have grappling hooks even in Sengoku era. They weren't Spider-Men
9. Black Ship's captain still has default ashigaru model instead of a portuguese sailor model on campaign map
10. Boshin units are added incorrectly and this f's up their VAs. Their "unit response" VA doesn't match "unit commands" VA. And when they are too close to the enemy, they will all switch to the VA #1.
11. There is still no agent for the Republic in FotS and thanks to the hardcoded UI, you can't even mod one. Still!
12. When you become Shogun as Takeda or Mori you still don't get their faction variant units!
13. Western marine units have flute playing when they march, but there is no flutist among them! And you can't even assign that march music to your new western units!
14. They didn't even bother to make cinematics for agents' actions for RotS and FotS campaign!
15. Black Ship and Nanban Trade Ship don't have the UI to fire cannons from each sides, like ETW/NTW had for ships
16. Nanban Trade Ship and Red Seal Ship still have attrition in the high seas!
And lots of other bugs, that were fixed in the original by modders, but still present in the "remastered version". Some of the bugs above are also partially "fixed" in the original
So if you have the original game, just play that version. There is no point in spending money on this loveless piece of corporate greed \t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Now to the list of bugs, they didn't fix:
1. Acquired resources in RotS and Sengoku campaign are still bugged on the diplomacy and trade tabs2. Craftworks, Iron, Silk and Wood buildings in RotS campaign still don't have their icon (which they did have in vanilla Sengoku campaign)
3. Modern flag in Boshin campaign still has lantern hanging in the air during night battles
4. Rank by fire still takes too much time to trigger
5. If your unit has more than 4 clickable abilities, next ones don't have toggle sound
6. Units keep spamming generic response, because they don't have correct voice lines assigned to them (nor recorded by VAs)
7. Rebels' flag is still bugged on the campaign map. Instead of their flag (in the bottom left corner) they still have Chosokabe mon and it switches to the last clan's flag you clicked before clicking on rebels' army again
8. There are still no grappling hooks for units. FYI, CA, Japanese did have grappling hooks even in Sengoku era. They weren't Spider-Men
9. Black Ship's captain still has default ashigaru model instead of a portuguese sailor model on campaign map
10. Boshin units are added incorrectly and this f's up their VAs. Their "unit response" VA doesn't match "unit commands" VA. And when they are too close to the enemy, they will all switch to the VA #1.
11. There is still no agent for the Republic in FotS and thanks to the hardcoded UI, you can't even mod one. Still!
12. When you become Shogun as Takeda or Mori you still don't get their faction variant units!
13. Western marine units have flute playing when they march, but there is no flutist among them! And you can't even assign that march music to your new western units!
14. They didn't even bother to make cinematics for agents' actions for RotS and FotS campaign!
15. Black Ship and Nanban Trade Ship don't have the UI to fire cannons from each sides, like ETW/NTW had for ships
16. Nanban Trade Ship and Red Seal Ship still have attrition in the high seas!
And lots of other bugs, that were fixed in the original by modders, but still present in the "remastered version". Some of the bugs above are also partially "fixed" in the original
CA could've implemented family system and army stances from later titles like Rome 2 and Attila, because Shogun's system lacked the depth. But no, they couldn't even do that!
So if your daimyo had brothers and an heir and he dies, his brothers just disappear from the family tree! And his heir will always get his appearance!
