Biggest reason I cant recommend it as of now is due to the following...
- PSN Account is required
- 8 Instances of Sony's SDK will run in the background while playing
- Unneeded amounts of Anti-Cheat when they could've just stuck with EAC alone
- Heavy instances of low performance when your specs BARELY reach the bare minimum.
- IF YOU AREN'T RUNNING WINDOWS 11, THE GAME WILL CHUG, IF NOT BRICK...

As much as I adore this game, i will call out the blatant bullsh*t Sony pulled to make TOKON on PC the way that it is... My review will remain negative until the game is optimized enough for all users that can run the minimum reqs, as well as Linux support at some point...

TL;DR: Everything Sony Touches Turns to Garbage

Arc System Works delivered a core gameplay masterpiece, but Sony choked it out with a bloated mess of background runtimes, SDKs, and anti-cheat. The resulting micro-stutters cause massive 8-frame rollback desyncs in crossplay, forcing PS5 players to turn crossplay off and locking PC out of 75%+ of the player base. On top of that, Sony intentionally blocked Linux/Steam Deck users by leaving a simple EAC back-end toggle disabled. Do not buy until Sony fixes the performance and stops treating PC gamers like second-class citizens.


I’ve been looking forward to Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls for over a year now. Arc System Works has a long, storied history of amazing fighting game experiences, highly functional netcode (from DNF Duel and beyond), and an incredible amount of visual appeal and character. However, in the back of my mind, I was acutely aware that Sony was involved, and that there was always the possibility that they would poison this title from day 0.

Sadly, I was correct. Rather than immediately diving into hyperbole, let me accurately outline the issues in the hopes that this will help Steam users better articulate their frustrations:


Issue #1: Bloatware, Micro-Stutters & Desyncs

The current technical consensus is that the root of the performance issues are micro-stutters. Specifically, no matter the user’s hardware configuration – from the lowly 2080 Tis to the beastly RTX 5090s – all PC users appear to be affected. This is not an issue that is always detected by frame count overlays (though oftentimes it is), requiring specialized utilities like MSI Afterburner or CapFrameX to properly detect.

When these micro-stutters occur over online games, this creates a desync, causing a lag spike that creates an 8-frame delay (probably more, really) on the opposing player’s side.

For this reason, and rightfully so, PlayStation users have opted to disable crossplay, effectively red-lettering PC users and locking off 75% or more of the existing player base. In the process, this creates the false impression that the PC platform is substandard next to the aging, antiquated, and restrictive PS5 platform.

Doubtlessly, the blame can be laid right on Sony’s doorstep, because as I noted earlier, ASW has had a five-year hot streak on netcode. Many people forget that ASW was one of the first mainstream fighting game designers to truly master rollback netcode, long before SF6 ever hit the scene. While many railed against the PSN mandate, this fails to even come close to encapsulating the extent of the malicious systems and SDKs that are packed in with this title. Between EAC, DRMs, Epic SDKs, and PSN, this generates an undue amount of CPU overhead, making these micro-stutters unavoidable.


Issue #2: Linux and Why Sony Had a Piss-Baby Fit Over Steam Machine

The long and short of it is that Sony deliberately blocked Linux from being able to log onto the online service, effectively walling off Linux users from the title. More than that, Sony deliberately chose to keep this information on the DL, only copping to it over the official Discord, and likening the issue to porting Marvel Tōkon to the modest Nintendo Switch hardware.

This is overt gaslighting, as Linux is merely an OS, and can be part of any PC hardware configuration. And thanks to Valve and the Linux community writ large, any manner of PC game can be played via Proton wrapper.

The culprit in this is Epic’s Easy Anti-Cheat, and it is well known that EAC has an easy, back-end, binary toggle that enables Linux users to connect. This is not a support or compatibility issue; this is Sony overtly blocking Linux users, and by extension, Valve-made hardware like the Steam Deck and Steam Machine.

It is well known that Sony got its panties in a twist when Microsoft announced that Project Helix would support PC/Steam games, and Valve announced the Steam Machine, as the very idea of a Sony-published game being played in a living room on anything other than a PlayStation was simply unfathomable. And rather than address the issue head-on, or simply accept that their investors had no stomach for consumer-friendly practices, they decided to deploy a clumsy form of subterfuge so they could play dumb to a compliant and uninformed consumer base.


PC is the De Facto Platform for Fighting Games

While I know many would disagree with me on this, and user statistics don’t necessarily support this assertion (but, also, 10% of Americans think the Earth is flat and 12% believe the moon landings were faked), I stand by this. PC was the home of rollback netcode that revolutionized fighting games for the modern era.

Fighting game enthusiasts will always prioritize performance and flexibility, which is something that PC offers in spades, and the PlayStation platform overtly denies users. PC offers the least amount of latency across the board, mods, flexible control options (to my leverless bros… try just using the keyboard! Dooooo iiiiiit!), and… ahah, oh yes, THEY DON’T CHARGE YOU AN ANNUAL FEE TO USE THE INTERNET THAT YOU’RE ALREADY PAYING FOR!!!! As badly as Sony would love to have a monopoly on fighting games, it will never truly happen. PC is the bastion for classic fighting games looking for their second or third renaissance (lookin’ at you, Third Strike!), and will provide the fastest, most latency-free experience possible… provided PSN is not involved >.>

In spite of all of this, Sony has long understood that in order to make their service-based strategy work, they NEED the PC Platform (though, doubtlessly, factions within Sony are deliberately trying to sabotage these releases in the hopes of making the case that they should retreat to their walled, janky garden).

As things stand, they only have two options. They can right these wrongs, and hope that PC gamers forgive them long enough so they can have another service game beyond Helldivers 2 become a reasonable success, or they can GTFO and never come back. Because I, and many others, are 100% done with them.


The Tragedy at the End of the Day

But this also makes me sad. As I led with, I knew that Sony would do their best to poison this release for PC gamers as hard as possible. But beneath the 17-layered cake that is their mal/bloatware package… lies a game that looks like a true passion project to my eyes. I did get to dabble with the beta and had a great time! I was very much looking forward to ASW’s spin on the Marvel properties, and now… I feel a lot of things. Like I said, mostly sadness.

I can’t even bring myself to launch this game again, and for now, I may just wait-and-see in the hopes that the backlash will push Sony to do the right thing by fixing this game, and embrace Linux. And if they don't, they have effectively ended any hope of having another service-game success for the current generation (Hi Marathon! How are your five users enjoying your game!?).

Sony’s position is completely indefensible, and the tribalistic stans that still stick up for them are fighting a console war that lost relevance over a decade ago. It very much resembles Prosperity Gospel, where they will be asked to pay up again and again, in the hopes that one day, they will receive their divine reward. And their only reward will be an empty wallet, a sub-standard set of restrictive hardware, and a suite of hollow, forgettable entertainment experiences. Praise Sony.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tThis is a great game held back by abysmal decisions by the publisher (Sony). These are the main gripes I and many others have, but they’re just the tip of the iceberg.

- No Linux support is absolutely unacceptable in 2026; Steam Machine and Steam Deck are unable to play the game under their default configurations and I have to dual boot just to play it.
- EAC, Theia anti-tamper, and PlayStation SDK runtimes all contribute to poor performance and block even the ability to run the game in a Windows VM
- Modding support is dead in the water, permanently. Theia prevents file extraction, EAC prevents mod loading. Cosmetic mods, performance-boosting mods, frame bars/training mode tools, and even hitbox extraction tools for resources like Dustloop just aren’t possible right now
- The game performs very poorly, and the PC client oftentimes causes asymmetrical rollback (where one player experiences constant hitching while the other does not) that makes it borderline unviable for online tournaments.

Sony is a disgrace of a publisher, but Arc System Works is a phenomenal studio. This game was made with so much care, and it is immediately apparent when you play it (look at Deadpool’s moveset alone). I can’t recommend this game to anyone, but I can say that anyone and everyone who wants this thing fixed needs to be vocal about it. If Theia were removed, performance issues would be largely resolved and Linux support would be a checkbox away (in the case of EAC) - it needs to happen and it needs to happen fast.\t\t\t\t\t

the included EAC/Theia/Playstation SDK combo can only be described as hostile. your framerate will be touched. play online and you're running sets like a water damaged toyota camry.

there's required PSN account & overlay integration on your head, there's proton incompatibility on your head, there's at least 9 frames of rollback (!!!) on your head, there's persistent micro-stutters on your head. there's day 1 false reassurances of fixed pc performance on your head, too.

mind you, i adore the actual game. every inch of it shows me that arcsys does, too. this is clearly a work of passion from a studio that wanted to contribute to marvel's legacy, and it's Fun, and my carnage is nice, and there's a timeline out there where major changes could potentially be implemented!

but as it stands, TNS currently can’t run tokon on PC, and you probably shouldn’t try either until something shakes.

the pc port plays miserable. the settings don t even display correctly. either the netcode or the poor performance makes the online play very bad, with rollback spikes.
there's also the easy anticheat and all of sony sdks that use a lot of resources.
the game is hostile to other ports also.
and let's not mention PSN requirement.

Edit: will i play this game because im stupid and i like shiny new things and am a fan of arcsys games ? unfortunately yes.but i cannot reccommend it.
Even though after reinstalling and recompiling shaders on my machine makes the game work fine in offline , online was still not playable in 90% of the cases atleast. Either people not getting good performance of their machines , or the rollback is terrible. Either way, nothing much changed since the beta for most cases. The anti cheat leads into a completely black window, and my CPU being clocked to hell and back. not to mention to multiple multiple instances of the Playstation PC SDK trying to run.

edit: after a solid amount of tinkering, and letting the black screen sit for about half an hour the game did finally load into it. Though it runs terribly, with constant micro jitters - So i'll have to keep my review as is.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tThis game is aggressively hostile to Linux players for absolutely no reason. Not only is there a precedent of every (non riot) fighting game working on Linux, there is precedent of ArcSys games working great on Linux, as well as Sony published games working on Linux.

Yet this game has decided to stoop low to straight up block any Linux player from even LAUNCHING the game. Unlike the previous ArcSys fighting game to have Easy Anti Cheat, Dragon Ball FighterZ, this game will not even let Linux players launch the game whatsoever. No offline play, nothing at all. If you purchases this game on any device running any flavor of Linux, you might as well have flushed $60 down the drain. That is unless you enjoy looking at a splash screen telling you that you aren't allowed to play the game.

Easy Anti Cheat has been widely supported on Linux for many years now, and it's common knowledge that a game simply having an anti cheat is typically not enough these days for it to be completely incompatible with Linux. Only the extremly invasive anti cheats, see Riot's Vanguard anti cheat, are the ones that do not work. You can read the article itself from Valve, Easy Anti Cheat specifically was mentioned as being an easy process.

"Our team has been working with Epic on Easy Anti-Cheat + Proton support over the last few months, and we're happy to announce that adding Steam Deck support to your existing EAC games is now a simple process, and doesn't require updating game binaries, SDK versions, or integration of EOS. Alongside our BattleEye updated from last year, this means that the two largest anti-cheat services are now easily supported on Proton and Steam Deck."

When asked about potential Linux support on the Marvel Tokon Discord, a community manager responded with, "what you need to understand that this is like requesting it for a different platform like the switch."

Not only is this a completely false statement, the community is not asking for a NATIVE linux port. We simply just want to play the game how 99% of all other games on Linux work, through wine/proton.

And I understand that the inclusion of Easy Anti Cheat is most likely a Sony mandated thing, not ArcSys themselves. But one thing to know is that, cheating in Fighitng Games is incredibly miniscule compared to basically any other genre of multiplayer video games. Does it happen? Yes, but does any fighting game (which often have zero anti cheat at all) ever have to deal with waves of cheaters? No. Not even close.

I suppose that this is to be expected from Sony these days. As with their recent actions of deleting paid content from people's libraries, killing off the PS3 and Vita stores, while at the same time doing their best to ensure a digital only future where we will have zero rights over the content we purchase, not allowing Linux support is just another cap in the feather of massive anti consumer practices they are putting on full display.\t\t\t\t\t

So I heard Online was rough, so I waited a few days just Labbed and played offline. FINALLY a patch hits, and I hop on......EVERY match has at least 3-5 Rollback frames, even on wired with 4 bars against someone. And this is after the 8-10 patch. Tokon is soooo fun to play tho, I love the mechanics and Doom is F'ing awesome. Right now though I can NOT Recommend this game. It just feels BAD to play Online and I'm VERY Disappointed. \n\t\t\t\t\tORIGINAL: I'd love to say this is an amazing Marvel game, but it does not work on my $2,200 Steam Machine, or anything Linux for that matter, so as sad as I am about doing it, I'm giving this game a negative review. Please, support SteamOS at least.
EDIT: The game's SteamOS compatibility now says that it is incompatible with Steam Machine & Steam Deck, but if the Kernel Level Anti-Cheat was going to make the game unplayable on Linux with no possible workaround, the SteamOS compatibility should have shown the game as incompatible before it released, and not 24 hours after the fact. I'll gladly change this to a real review once I can actually play it, with real Linux support or SteamOS' official Dual Boot support, but neither of those are happening any time soon.\t\t\t\t\t

Even then, the game won't get past the anti cheat screen for me. It force resets my computer. So sadly I can't recommend this game even with the latest patch. Hopefully it gets fixed.\t\t\t\t\t
