I’ll preface this by saying I know I’m the outlier here. If you’re looking for a more positive take, there are plenty of glowing reviews on this site that will suit your tastes. For me, 007: First Light was my most anticipated release of the year, yet I walked away disappointed. I didn’t finish it, made it to Chapter 7 (out of 10) before dropping out. I suppose I was expecting more of an action‑adventure experience, but this game leans heavily into stealth. To be clear, the game has been a roaring success, 4 million copies sold is no small feat, and I’m glad the franchise will continue. But personally, I’m relieved Amazon wants to be more involved in the sequels. IO Interactive, in my view, could have done a much better job with this one.
The story begins with Bond dispatched to investigate a rogue MI6 agent, 009, whose betrayal threatens to destabilize global security. What follows is a globe‑trotting chase through neon‑lit cities, shadowed fortresses, and the inevitable climactic showdown where espionage collides with personal vendetta. It is Bond stripped to his essentials: betrayal, gadgets, and the thin line between duty and conscience.
The genre has been defined by the likes of Uncharted and Tomb Raider, games that marry cinematic spectacle with fluid traversal, but I found First Light to sit uneasily in this charecterisation. Bond’s world is already cinematic, but here the translation feels more mechanical than inspired. The game wants to be both a spy thriller and a sprawling adventure, but rarely achieves the seamlessness of its peers.
Its ambition is clear: to fuse the Bond mythos with the grandiosity of a modern day action adventure game. At times, it succeeds. The stealth sequences, punctuated by gadget use, capture the fantasy of being 007 to a degree (it does unfortunately feel a bit too limited). My biggest gripe with the game is the pacing, there are long stretches where the game is simply dull and it has one of the longest most handy-holdy tutorials I've ever seen in a game. It takes nearly 2-3 hours to complete before you are actually given full control of the character. Exploration is often reduced to narrow corridors and scripted set pieces. The promise of freedom, of discovery, is undercut by invisible walls and predictable beats.
Craftsmanship is competent but uninspired. The graphics are polished, environments detailed, but they lack the artistry that makes worlds memorable. I feel like I have seen all the assets in this game but in better games. The story gestures toward intrigue but leans heavily on familiar tropes. Systems and mechanics : cover shooting, stealth takedowns, gadget deployment, drive the moment‑to‑moment play, but they lack the fluidity and rhythm of the genre’s best. While fidelity is high in presentation, I found it terribly middling in execution.
As a gamer I always like my reviews to pose the question of whether the game is worth the price of admission, and more importantly, the demand on your time? It's a YES and a NO (which is why my score is landing smack bang in the middle). For Bond devotees, there are moments of satisfaction, flashes of cinematic excitement that justify curiosity. It has very little replayability after the first run, the stealth mode and other mechanics are not that interesting. I would recommend the uncharted series or Hitman instead of this game. This game's price tag only survives on the hype and I will definitely not buy the follow-up for this game. This is mostly for people who wants to experience the bond-atmosphere (which is done fairly well) but as a game there are alot of other choices that would give you more bang for the buck. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tthis is just a Hollywood glaze fest. the gameplay is flashy but dull. your gadgets either stun or kill in combat. out of combat they just stun or distract. and the entire game feels like it pigeonholes you into playing it how the devs want you to. if you choose to do nothing in the waiting room. the game, while having finer details, lacks the opportunity to enjoy them.

you get up to 3 paths to complete your mission. most of the time its just. you have to do this this way. some doors open to interactions or gadgets. others are mandatory keycards even if you could break the glass door and go through that way.
most of the game feels the same. the only time I had a bit of fun after my first playthrough was when I used a mod to get unlimited power so I could just mess around.
not a sandbox game. its a do this objective and no alternative is available. it feels like the game was designed to be a more open world, and then they spent all the time on animations and effects. the variety to the game is just the same throughout it. stealth does not matter at all and is unrewarding.
difficulties are all the same. no real reason to make the game harder because all it does is add damage and health to enemies and nothing else.
resource management is lame. have a cool gun skin you like? too bad, now it does not pick up ammo from other guns that share ammo with it. but if you take that gun and collect other guns like it, you get ammo... that you can then go back to get your preferred gun just to reload it. you can't hold a decent amount of ammo. probably because if you could, the gunplay could not force you to use the thrown gun mechanics.

This game really makes you feel like you're playing through a James Bond film.
The story does a brilliant job at introducing us to James Bond the charming, charismatic, reckless and intelligent young agent, and how he gets the 007 name. I really love his humour and his way with people. The story has betrayals and plot twists that really keep you entertained, and of course I can't forget the awesome training montage.
The world immediately got me hooked, and the cinematic feel is just incredible. You could watch a cutscene and feel as if you're in a cinema watching a Bond movie, and the many ways you could complete a mission really makes you feel like YOU are James Bond.
The gameplay mechanics in this game is just brilliant I really enjoy being able to just bluff my way out of a situation instead of going guns blazing like in other games and eavesdropping to gain intel, also the gadgets are super fun, the Q watch, the laser, the dart phone, the missle pen, etc. they all have their different uses giving us a more James Bond feel.
The soundtrack is also something you can't sleep on. I LOVE IT especially that opening.
Overall I highly recommend this game especially if you love classic spy/espionage movies. It's fun, It's clever and it's shaken not stirred.

The game feels super well optimized ( After disabling every post processings in settings the game looked more crisp and I am not a fan of noise or flim grain anyway ). My main issue was the combat since I thought there were more stealth opportunities... The RB button controls were also a bit clunky, making running and taking cover feel confused at times, though I eventually got used to it lol. The physical combat was fantastic, blending mixed martial arts with gunplay seamlessly. Plus, throwing weapons at enemies and pulling off finishers is absurdly satisfying. Graphically, it looks awesome, and Bond's snappy dialogue and short jokles are the cherry on top. Never had a boring moment!\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tIt's a spectacular game from the point of view of narration and storyline, but it lacks neat gameplay. Stealth is very easy on middle difficulty, NPCs are goofy and battle system isn't convenient, 'cause the character is always switches between shooting and fighting mode.
I guess it's natural, when a player decides, whether he wants to punch an enemy or shoot him, but here we have to wait "Licence to Kill" system activation right in the middle of an action! So I had several situations, when I was holding a fully-loaded gun and been surrounded by a bunch of an armed group, but Bond was waving his fists instead of shooting.
Shooting also can't be activated after "the conflict has been resolved", until you meet face-to-face another group of enemies at certain level section. Even during the firefight, when an enemy comes at a close-combat range, Bond on his own decides to use melee attack, but I intended to shoot. This issue could be resolved if we had the "remove weapon" button in game settings, for example.
Maybe it's needless to crave a shooter out of a spy-game, but my expierence would be much enjoyable with the battle mechanics made more elaborate.

Story-wise it had nice bits about AI implications, but most of the story is just so ridiculously over the top, it feels like a parody of the action genre, like Kung Fury... surely it can feel locally fun and engaging, but it's like it's proudly enjoying using every known cheesy action-game cliche that was ever invented.
Most of the game is just going from trigger to trigger with occasional shallow puzzles, very forgiving stealth (featuring the largest ventilation shafts I've seen in videogames) standard shootouts and nicely animated fistfights that are also very hard to fail unless you're surrounded. Most of the time the exact activities you're subjected to are forced on you by the game and don't depend on your choice, i.e. if the game wants to force you into fighting, it just doesn't allow you to use weapons, just because; If you're in a car, you'll be in a car, until you reach the trigger; etc. Speaking of, vehicle sequences feel a bit needless. Physics are alright, but you're only allowed to drive for 30 seconds in a basically straight corridor.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

For me, I grew up loving the Bond franchise, and being able to play what I thought was going to be an open world James Bond skin of Hitman was something I looked forward to. At times, this game really scratches that itch with breathtaking set pieces, innovative use of gadgetry, puzzles that are challenging and rewarding, and gameplay that fits Bond's character. However, these moments are rather few and far between. To be honest, choices don't matter in this game. No matter what you choose, you'll always arrive at the same conclusion. The same storyline that feels a bit railroaded. Like other reviewers have said, there is a lot of hand-holding. The tutorial itself is very long, and to me, it feels like it insults the player's intelligence a bit by not letting them figure things out for themselves. The story is predictable. The plot twists are predictable, and of course, like many other millennial-written plots, there is the Somehow Palpatine returned moment. The character frequently talks to himself to conveniently give the player hints on how to progress, and of course there is the infamous "yellow paint" on all parkour segments. In short, it is easy to tell that the writing was written by a bunch of millennials, and the dialogue often times on par with the, Whoa, did you just shift reality? meme. It definitely feels like the intended audience is IGN reviewers, and not someone who likes the challenge and ingenuity required from Hitman, or the more self-driven adventure titles like Uncharted or Tomb Raider. At no point is the player ever given a choice of mission, or target, or how they want to execute the mission. And to be honest, it feels like a visual novel with beefed-up graphics. The combat is a bit janky at times, and the movement is disjointed, and there are many unoriginal repeats of the same landscape. In short, if you're a James Bond fan, and you want to be taken along for a ride, then this game is for you. But if you're looking for a serious open-world spy thriller espionage assassination game, then this is not for you.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I have played all the hitman games so I was assuming this would be what a spy thriller would feel like. I have also seen most of the James Bond movies and read some of them too, so I was excited to play a role in the movie.
007 First Light is neither a game nor a movie. It tries really hard to be a cinematic game but without the cinematic experience of a movie and without the fun of a game. Its neither here nor there. The game is visually stunning but empty. Dialogues are repeated, there are so many glitches and bugs I was ignoring hoping that eventually it'll be worth it. For a story that revolves around a spy that breaks the rules, the gameplay really wants to hand hold you and make sure you follow the path they have made.
It has all the elements of an IOI game and credit where its due, they made it well but some decisions like:
1. combat by just spamming one button
2. blue tarpaulin to direct your way and no other way being available
3. very very linear pathing,
4. no option to come up with your own findings and reportings,
5 collectibles like cards being very obviously placed,
6 no crafting or using resources outside of tech
7 no sense of dread for time based objectives
8 the game does everything for the character but not for the player.
This definitely has potential, you see it in the stealth missions(doesnt really matter if you dont stealth cause no punishment). The cutscenes have so much substance and the gameplay is clunky. Like why can't I go in a different route than the obvious. The whole point of James Bond is the break the pattern, to be resourceful and all I have done is spam my q watch or just mash buttons.
Brainless game by talented people. Maybe the MBA/Private Equity(?)/Bosses need a reality check and let the game developers do the work they are good at.

Voice acting is good (especially Lennie James), graphics are great (in kind of that overly polished but underwhelming up close Playstation way), story is very solidly Bond, the whole game is polished and runs great and there are moments, especially in the beginning, when the game is quite fun.
But it gets old, so, so fast. The first several levels are great. They have good pacing, and they make you feel like you're figuring things out and coming up with solutions for yourself. But by the 3rd real mission (not counting the first two which are basically just tutorials), it starts feeling very linear. You'll walk into a wide open room, be told you need to do something to get access to another area, and immediately after an NPC nearby will highlight with an obvious solution. This happens over and over again, until the last third of the game when it becomes 75% literally just a corridor shooter with only one real path to ever go into, and everything is just so scripted, and not very interesting.

What surprised me the most, though, is Bond himself. In previous James Bond games, I never really felt connected to the character. Maybe part of the reason is that English is not my first language, so I don’t always fully understand the cultural background and humor surrounding the character.
