It genuinely gives you that proper James Bond experience. The story kept me interested throughout, and the mix of stealth, gadgets, gunfights, and hand-to-hand combat was a lot of fun. The visuals are absolutely stunning, and every location looks beautiful. The characters are well designed, memorable, and fit the Bond universe really well. And yeah... the people were easy on the eyes too hehe.. XD

It's hard to precisely point to what made me so bored with this game. In short, I just think it's bland?
The cover shooting is completely immersion breaking for me. There are so many enemies and so many bullets flying. James is just soaking dozens of bullets. Often, there's no strategically logic thing to do; the game just wants you to storm the enemy. Even in the cutscenes, James will just run STRAIGHT at a dude who's shooting at him with an automatic rifle. It doesn't feel cool. It just makes James seem really stupid and lucky. (Also, why did they make such a big deal out of James doing his first kill - mind you, in self-defense - and show how conflicting it was for him, and then the next time he has a gun he has no gripes with the vast swath of people he kills?)
And the stealth is... basic? I honestly don't know what to say. It's on par with other games that have stealth sections in a primarily action oriented game. It's not an engaging puzzle.

The AI was rather bad, e. g. a boss fight just pauses and the enemy just stands idle when we lose line of sight. Or a boss suddenly stands outside the current area and I have to reload a checkpoint to progress after repeating the scene. I didn’t expect a hitman level of sandbox exploration, but the exploration I had wasn’t that exciting and some puzzles quite awkward to solve. The whole game felt more like a movie because there were so many cutscenes and handholding. If I can “play” a decent part of the game by putting the controller aside and just watching the screen, something is wrong with the game. It’s also an awkward technique to take away my control of the camera to force me to watch something relevant to progress, this way it doesn’t feel at all like I achieved something. I regret grinding through the whole game instead of getting a refund sooner.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

While fairly enjoyable, and at a technical level incredibly polished, this game ultimately left me unsatisfied. Promising characters that had their potential discarded, writing that showed sparks but often fell into mediocrity, threads I was expecting to go somewhere that were forgotten, gameplay that was alright but undeniably repetitive, lack of agency that was very poorly masked, and an ending that came out of nowhere at hour ~19.
Here I was sitting, thinking I'd stop after the chapter and continue tomorrow, and there roll credits. In hindsight, I should have seen it coming, but from a narrative perspective, it didn't feel like we were heading towards a coherent conclusion. The early threads were still in the back of my mind, waiting to be connected to something that would come later. This game ends very much with a promise of next season, and doesn't bother to deliver a complete serving.

Ultimately, IO Interactive, among the few truly golden studios of Northern Europe and Europe in general, were given the impossible task of making a better stealth/action game than their own Hitman franchise, while handling a beloved and iconic IP, and on top of that all, having to make it a better game than Goldeneye.
Few franchises have the chops of having such a super classic like Goldeneye, one of the most revolutionary and iconic FPS games of all time. Games since then have never captured the hype and appreciation since, until now. 007 Last Light is not only the best James Bond game of all time, its one of the best games in the genre and easily, the best game IO Interactive has made. A feat for all of gaming, but also a feat for the studio itself.
Their own engine is a technical marvel of software engineering. Working reflections, realistic and immersive, but uniquely lively graphics that is completely gorgeous. Finally, a game that is not on Unreal. And thus, the optimization is absolutely top tier. This Danish studio has always pushed their engines to incredible limits. People my age remember being amazed by the amount of NPCs they managed to have roaming around on the PS2 copy of Hitman Blood Money, only to be further amazed by the dense crowds of the new Hitman trilogy. And once again, they completely succeed in making a game world feel so genuine, alive and populated.
In terms of presentation, 007 pushes beyond most current gens and feels genuinely like a model for the next generation.
That being said, there are some embarrassingly weird graphical glitches here and there still. Sometimes, accessing the journal or gadget desk turns frames to single digits for seemingly no reason, albeit this being solved with a restart. In another instance, the camera locked in a certain, fixed direction during a boss fight while James hilariously was beaten to death off screen. Other than that, the game truly is impressive in every instance.
The only thing that mechanically made me mad, and it only happened once, was trying to accomplish a task only for an NPC off screen to literally interrupt me mid-task, and opening a reply prompt that stopped my mission necessary action. Forcing me to do it all over again. It was small, simple and utterly outraging for some reason. Other than that, the game is fair.
Far easier than Hitman and in all the best ways. If you try to play this game like Hitman or any other game, simply don't. James is sort of like Indiana Jones, in that he is more a brawler than a shooter. I found the shooting somewhat frustrating at first, until a friend suggested playing it like an action movie and not a typical shooting game. And thus, the game immediately clicked. The once intrusive and sticky cover system became a fluid way of catching your breath inbetween dynamic combat interactions, disarming, dismantling and engaging enemies in an intensely kinetic, cinematic and satisfying way.
The game's soft sci-fi, a staple of the spy and James Bond genres, thematically is flawless in the relevant arguments of today. Ethics failing to keep up with technology and the unethical application of supposedly ethical missions utilizing unrestrained software and hardware irresponsibly. And unlike most post 9/11 milslop games, the antagonists are not motivated merely by greed, but also have some genuine ideological, nationalistic sentiments that really feel like proper Bond villain stuff.
They are bold in what they given our new Bond, in terms of characterization. All of the things that make him Bond are there. The womanizing, the banter, the slickness but intense capability to unconventionally makes his way through antagonistic set pieces and character driven encounters. Everything is grounded well enough to show some real high brow realities in a wide-eyed, self aware setting that also knows when to turn the dial all the way up.
James has deep platonic friendships with women, to coincide with his one night stands, making him further an enjoyable character and very lovable to any player regardless of gender. He is a Bond you really root for and this honest origin story, drawing from so many great inspirations and from genuinely some very dedicated creative pools at IO Interactive, does not relent in being a full package. A nearly twenty hour single player story that never overstays its welcome.

The story was good enough and it was what everyone thought, a mix between Uncharted and Hitman (more emphasis on the Uncharted IMO but tighten up the gunplay to feel more like TLOUP2). I've been a fan of IO Interactive since the earlier days of Hitman, and the stealth genre has always held a special place for me. Growing up with games like Splinter Cell, Metal Gear Solid, Assassin's Creed, and, of course, Hitman, spy and stealth games scratched a particular itch when it came to critical thinking, strategy, and player choice.
The best of these games made you feel like a piece on a chessboard. You were part of a larger story, but your decisions and approach still mattered.
Coming back to IO Interactive with 007 First Light, I can say that it does capture some of that spy feeling. There are moments where you need to assess a situation and think about how you want to approach an objective. The game has plenty of charm, style, and flair, and it certainly *looks* and *feels* like a James Bond game.
Unfortunately, that's also where some of my biggest criticisms begin.
007 First Light often feels like style over substance.
While the game presents you with decently sized environments, they don't offer nearly the same sandbox experience that its Hitman cousin does. The game can create the impression that you have multiple paths and approaches available, but much of that freedom feels like an illusion. In reality, you're often following highly scripted and contrived paths, interacting with the environment when the game tells you to, rather than genuinely figuring out a situation for yourself.
There isn't as much actual "spy work" or deduction as I was hoping for. Even Hitman: Absolution, despite being one of the more linear Hitman games, had a gameplay loop and controls that I personally found more satisfying.
That's unfortunate because the foundation is clearly there. This is an opportunity to create a modern spy game with the depth, freedom, and strategic thinking that the genre deserves. Instead, 007 First Light often feels hesitant to fully commit to those ideas. It takes risks simply by being a different kind of game for IO Interactive, but it doesn't always take those risks far enough.
Another major issue for me is the game's so-called offline mode.
For what is fundamentally a single-player game, the offline experience feels aggressively limited. If the game fails its server check-in, you're locked out of content despite having paid for the game. On top of that, playing offline blocks access to challenge systems that are heavily connected to progression and replayability.
That kind of design is difficult to justify in a primarily single-player experience.
Overall, 007 First Light is a step in the right direction, and I genuinely enjoy the concept of IO Interactive bringing its experience with stealth and player-driven missions into the world of James Bond.
The problem is that it still has a lot left to desire.
There's a good spy game here, and there are moments where you can see exactly what IO Interactive was trying to accomplish. But I can't help feeling that the game is held back by its linear design, limited sandbox elements, lack of genuine deduction, and restrictive online requirements.

Growing up with games like Splinter Cell, Metal Gear Solid, Assassin's Creed, and, of course, Hitman, spy and stealth games scratched a particular itch when it came to critical thinking, strategy, and player choice.
The best of these games made you feel like a piece on a chessboard. You were part of a larger story, but your decisions and approach still mattered.
Coming back to IO Interactive with 007 First Light, I can say that it does capture some of that spy feeling. There are moments where you need to assess a situation and think about how you want to approach an objective. The game has plenty of charm, style, and flair, and it certainly *looks* and *feels* like a James Bond game.

Story is amazing, got upset a few times because i get attached to characters lmao.
