\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tWhen it was first announced that The Blood of Dawnwalker was being developed by veterans from The Witcher 3 team under Bandai Namco, I was incredibly excited yet "skeptical" about the chosen genre an openworld dark fantasy Action-RPG. It is a rather generic blend of genres that requires plenty of surprising elements to truly become a "Grande" masterpiece.
The setting 14th century Europe, ravaged by plague and brutal warfare is fascinating. The medieval European scenery, forest landscapes, and detailed urban environments feel incredibly dense and immersive. The day-night gameplay variation is striking combat styles and exploration differ so much between day and night that it feels like playing two distinct characters. By day, Coen operates as a human, utilizing a sword, elemental magic, and investigative skills reminiscent of a Witcher. By night, he unleashes his vampire form, gaining access to supernatural abilities, brutal executions, and parkour-style rooftop navigation.
Open-world exploration is free from time constraints, but undertaking main or critical missions causes time to advance. This means you cannot complete every single mission in a single playthrough. The Witcher 3 DNA is palpable the dialogue writing, dark atmosphere, and morally grey consequences are executed masterfully. The time-progression system adds significant replayability, as quest choices genuinely impact the storyline.
However, the parry and combat systems feel a bit stiff. The swordplay attempts a directional parry approach (similar to Kingdom Come) but can feel clunky at times, and the camera lock-on lacks precision. The movement feels super strange, and every time I entered a cutscene, it reset my sensitivity without changing the setting, meaning I kept having to make my sensitivity lower and lower until I couldn't lower it more.
I'd wait a few weeks for them to iron out the wrinkles before buying the game.

Controller input completely bugged out, you randomly just stop running and come to a slow walk then start running again. Performance wise, there were a few little stutters during my short playtime.
Will continue to play and update the review accordingly once that has been fixed. Sure I could just play with keyboard and mouse but this type of game plays better on controller and the devs believe this to be the case to the point of it giving me a popup so.....
I'll just keep on Helldiving until the meatbags patch it.

My 5080 is still having issues running medium graphics they need to fix this ASAP. The benchmark the games auto runs in the beginning recommends ultra graphics for my machine and it struggle's on medium. i spent my first 30 min trying to dial it in so its manageable. I've been waiting a long time for this game and im trying to like it but its hard to enjoy with the absolutely terrible optimization. sure the graphics look great standing still. wow runs like dog sh#$. at this time cant recommend hope they fix it.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

What I had issues with;
- When using a controller Coen will randomly stop moving as you rotate the stick.
- Combat does not seem designed for multiple enemies at all. A soft lock-on system and camera that randomly chooses who you're swinging at makes combat unfun. You're pushed into keeping any enemies within a single cone of vision in front of you and praying the camera lets you attack the person that just swung at you.
- Unreal Engine 5 has yet again graced us with a game that looks good (not amazing, just good) with worse performance than better looking games of the past. Frame gen gives higher frames at the cost of the image looking significantly worse. Using DLSS without frame gen has some artifacting on things like hair and beards, which is more tolerable, but settling for 60fps would be easier if the game actually maintained that and didn't stutter from simply turning the camera around.
- Textures sometimes pop in late and Coen seems to be the only character with good texture work on the face. Everyone else looks rather smudged/low detail.
- Talking to characters outdoors gives a weird echo effect as if you're talking inside an unfurnished house.
- Opening a menu to learn a recipe seems pointless. Just automatically learn it upon pick up much like I can read a journal before adding it to my inventory.
- Swapping between weapons seems way slower than it probably should be.
- Cutscenes are capped to 30fps for some reason. Some of them can be overcome with a mod but not all.
What I liked;

- The time-based structure is really interesting and I'm sure it'll have me really thinking about my decisions and how many points I dump into my character.

However the way the time mechanic actually works is that EVERYTHING costs time, you cannot explore the world, level up skills or even unlock fast travel points without losing more time in the game. It feels stupid to punish the player with less game for.. doing basic exploration or leveling up.
I still intend to try and finish the game, but for such basic aspects of a open world game to be working against the game itself just feels terrible and not enjoyable. A damn shame.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI'm loving the story and aesthetic. I'm about 6 hours in and have found the occasional frustration, but it's all coming up now and I can't recommend this to anyone until it's patched.
Game recommends controller, but the controller randomly stops accepting inputs and the game switches to keyboard input, completely interrupting the flow. I can't quite tell if this happens during combat or just exploration, but it could explain some of the combat issues I've been encountering too.
The auto-lock in combat is some of the worst I've seen. No real explanation of how it works, or how to change targets, it just randomly selects a target it thinks your targeting, even if they're the furthest target from you and it completely yanks you out of battle.
I do like the combat system, when it works, but I'll go from having a perfect parry sequence to suddenly taking 4 hits in a row and dying, even though I should have been at the very least blocking. This might be the controller issue but the combat itself just doesn't have the best feedback.
Oh and controllers too - Why is the game only mapped for Xbox controllers? Steam has no problem talking with a PS5 controller. I'd understand if the game were an Xbox/Game Pass exclusive, but the game released on PS5 too, so detecting controller type should be a bare minimum feature.

Been fighting through this fort as a vampire with claws, the moment I walk through that door I lock onto the farthest enemy, once again, and pull out my sword. Tested and repeated several times, only way to avoid it is have claws out before opening the door. Even if I pull my claws out, confirm I'm set to claws, and sheathe them I end up equipping a sword.

FIRST the devs need to properly configure how this game syncs save files on steam as graphics configuration is mixed with save file so when you are playing across different PC specs; you have to readjust settings each time! So going from a DLSS PC to a AMD GPU PC; you have to reselect all graphic settings each time. This is something Steamworks documentation explictly tells devs NOT to do and even indie game devs can get this right but apparently not Witcher 3 veteran devs. This is a joke.
Overall recommendation based on state of performance and in-game optimisation is watch and wait. Unless you have a beefy PC or willing to put up with performance level upscaling and frame gen ON.
Gameplay and Mechanics
On keyboard and mouse the controls are somewhat awkward and often hectic in fights. Examples of this include; in inventory you have to click on an item and then press ENTER to equip/unequip. You can't just hover over and click like most games. In traversal you have the ability E to shadow phase/step but on keyboard it feels slightly awkward to use as you can hold e and select a spot to phase to (with a range limitation like a turn based mechanic almost) or press e repeatdly to essentially continue to stutter phase in real-time.
The in-game combat and UI is very similiar to Kingdom Come 2 (so if you like it there then you will adjust much faster here). The looting, menu UI, in-game interactions, NPC, world setting etc. is essentially Witcher 3 with Dawnwalker mod (this is not a criticism rather just reflection of Witcher origin of the devs). One thing is combat can get hectic very fast even if just fighting 2 NPCs and it gets hard to respond when both are simultaneously attacking you. On story/fair difficulties etc. (which is standard or easy) you can have incoming block and attack animations showing where enemy is attacking from and block/dodge accordingly (let KC2). However, even changing difficulty to fair was at times difficult to react to multiple incoming attack direction queues so the only viable strategy if dealing with mobs is either try draw 1 NPC away (not always practical nor does in-game A.I allow that level of fidelity gameplay) or spam dodge (which depletes stamina quick without perfect dodge).
Speaking of perfect dodge; there is no time slow down, no real reward or momentary i-frame type of mechanic from perfect dodge. The only reward is you consume no stamina whereas perfect blocking unlocks a momentary window for attack. If you compare to something like Stellarblade; the issue here both perfect dodge and block requires similiar level of skill/user interaction/reaction needed (yes you can perfect dodge in more directions vs. only perfect block in a single direction). But when you are fighting a mob (which is almost always), blocking let alone perfect blocking becomes increasingly difficult not because skill issue rather attacks are coming at you at same time so you have a choice to either block one get hit by another or only viable way for nil damage is to dodge. You can see where I'm going with this which is essentially in-game design choices/mechancis encourage players to block over dodge but blocking vs. 2 or more NPCs in a fight is significantly less viable than dodging. When you add perfect dodge mechanic with minimal reward (and dodge obviously takes you away from chance at counter striking as you increase distance between you and targets); you feel as a player unfairly pushed towards a certain play style that doesn't cohesively present as a holistic package in mob fights. That is; if you want to reduce damage taken then you can only dodge against mobs which in turn takes you away from counter strike opportunity so you have to reposition to strike only to have enemy NPCs ready for another attack animation coming at you same time from multiple directions so blocking becomes not viable and this gameplay loop repeats.
Performance on 4090M
There is noticeable stuttering in open world for me likely from first playthrough shader compiling but will update as I go. I would also recommend playing with a controller over KB+M as I found KB+M to be clunky at times including when interacting in inventory or when fighting as you have to do directional attacks (WASD + LMB), directional blocks/dodge (WASD + RMB/LCTRL) then use keys like Q/S/1,2,3,4 etc for abilities and quick items. This combo in Dawnwalker's fast paced combat even at fair difficulty can become hectic. I found actions like crouching (LCTRL) felt laggy as in you press LCTRL and there's a noticeable delay on magnitude of almost a second or so.
This game runs sub-optimal at start and in starting village area with frequent UE5 traversal stutters even after multiple playthroughs and reloads. On 4090M/13900HX it runs about 40FPS at DLAA Ultra with no FG (60~90FPS with DLSS FG with AVG ~75FPS). The issue seems to be shader compilation with initial playthrough experiencing classic issues like interrupted frame pacing with new shaders loading with new animations or new cutscenes. Example is intro video once you start a game which I believe all cinematic is capped at 30FPS but the entire cinematic intro played out with micro and noticeable longer stutters from fame pacing where average frametime is ~33.3ms but I saw spikes >55ms every 15 seconds or so to give you an idea. It was definitely noticeable enough and frequent enough to distract away from otherwise good cinematic background story. 30FPS cap on cutscenes in general can lead to more stuttering experience for viewers.
Performance on Rog Ally X Z1E (30W Turbo)
The game is barely playable on Z1E. On FSR Performance everything set to LOW with FSR FG ON; I get 45~60FPS with majority sitting around 50FPS gameplay and just roaming no combat. This is with FSR FG ON so without you are looking at sub 30FPS which is atrocious. So this game will not be playable on anything but Z2E or the new Intel G3 Arc Extreme handhelds. Good luck to the steam deck zealots that will try to run and defend this game is playable using multiple proton hacks including LSFG and FSR 4 mod lol.

If you love exploring open worlds and expiriencing all of it. This game isn't for you. I feared the time mechanic might be a dealbreaker for me and I was right. In an rpg i want to do every quest explore every inch of the map and just expierience everything there is to find, especially with an interesting world like in this game. But sadly the time mechanic locks you out of so many things "So you can replay it and have a diffrent story"... yeah but it's so annoying having to choose and look around everywhere just so you know what quests you can do and then think about which one to take. Oh a tree fell on that womans house and she fell down, if I help her it costs me 1 timeslot... hmmm what if there is another more interesting or important quest? Oh leveling up costs time too? great so I lock myself out of content if I level up. And most of the "skills" are just percentage bonuses.
There may be people who love this mechanic as it creates an actual sense of urgency but as someone who just casually wants to explore an rpg world it is annoying as hell. Constantly being unsure what is worth your time and the fomo of not seeing everything you want to breaks any fun I can have in this game. During the tutorial I had to use the keyboard to duck under a log as the controller input was not recognised. Then, during the first tutorial fight the dodge button similarly failed to register.

Superb game so far. Some minor, very minor issues. Do you usually skip all the dialogue cutscenes in a game? So do I. Sometimes. This game. Haven't skipped one. They're all very well done, dialogue and voice acting is on point and they're genuinely interesting to watch. Graphics are Witcher 3.5. Extremely well done open world so far. Set design is aces. Sound design is aces. Weapons, grunts, animals, all of it. Very well done. Full 5.1 to 7.1 audio support as well.
Combat is great. It's been said that it's similar to For Honor. I guess. Not really though. It's more like Kingdom Come 2's more refined but NOT near as hard sometimes. It's great. You'll either love it or deal with it. Combat animations are def awesome to watch and do. HUGE assortment of gear and weapons early game already. Def looking forward to so much more good stuff to collect.
Lots to collect as well. If you ever played The Witcher 3 you'll be right at home here. You'll snag everything you see and hope it all pans out in the end. Right? Skill trees are beefy with multiple paths to take. Magic, Vampirism and Swordsmanship. Some skills can not be gotten unless you find a teacher or skill book in the wild that explains it. All good stuff.
I KNOW a LOT of people were iffy on the time mechanic. So was I. However, after having played the game I can say, without a doubt, it's the BEST implementation of a time mechanic in any game to date. You do NOT have a time clock continually running in the foreground. Quests may or may not take 'time'. How much time it does tell you. An hour? 2 hours? Etc. You get the picture. In all seriousness, with seeing how big just the EARLY game map is, I KNOW I'll be playing this game at least TWICE because you just can not do everything in the game. You just won't. Also, do NOT try to be Superman and go directly at the big boss as soon as the prologue is over. HE WILL KICK YOUR ASS AND LAUGH IN YOUR FACE. It's doable though. You have been warned.

The combat system is really interesting. It feels a lot like The Witcher mixed with Mount & Blade or For Honor. I've seen quite a few people say the combat is clunky... honestly, that's bs.
I've spent about 3 hours exploring Laslea, doing a few side quests alongside the first main quest, and I quickly realized: holy sh!t, these quests actually have consequences. They can change certain things later in the story.
I was also seriously blown away by the storytelling in some of the quests that initially seemed completely irrelevant to me. I'm thinking, "Sure, I'll just go rescue this guy from some wolves..." and suddenly I'm standing in an ancient ruin, uncovering a damn interesting piece of history I never expected to find.
And I also realized pretty quickly that I can't do everything. I actually have to make choices. Time keeps moving, no matter what you do. And when the sun starts going down... well, you'll have to find out what happens for yourself.
Guys, I'm usually not that easy to hook with single-player games, but this one is fking awesome. I've only played it for 3 hours as a test, and I already can't wait to jump back in tomorrow. It was absolutely worth waiting for the release.

Not to mention, I've played plenty of recent games of similar or superior quality without issue. Crimson Desert, Stellar Blade, KCD II, just to name a few. I didn't even have to run those games on low. I have tried, however, running this on low, and it doesn't feel any better. I'm not even trying to run it on 4k, I have a 1080p monitor.
Beyond that, even with settings turned up, it has weird visual artifacts. Apparently this itself is a result of playing on 1080p, but that doesn't really make it any better.
70$ game guys, c'mon.
Also, movement feels atrociously bad. Feels like you're steering Coen with a rudder.
