The story unfolds gently as you complete quests and interact with the various humans, animals, and mythological creatures of this world. This game is heavily influenced by Japanese mythology, art, and writing. The game contains a huge amount of traditional Japanese art which can be viewed in a gallery complete with a thorough description of the artwork and notes on the artist. Similarly there is a library of Japanese Kanji and tutorial.

I assume you are getting this game to learn Japanese, and it will help you with that but this game is so much more.
It is a deckbuilder, it is a matching game, its a skillbuilding rpg, its a resource management game. It has beautiful art that is also historical paintings from Japan, with a soundtrack that sounds like classical Japanese music and great animation. It's a good primer on Japanese culture and Shinto Bhuddism for someone from a culture not familiar with either, and its organically placed into the game. Not only that, it has a complex story where you can see both sides of the debate. Even if you see the characters for a relatively short time compared to gameplay, even the NPCs stick with you from their quirky dialogue. I loved the characters, and how each stage of the game builds to progress the story. Its a slower game that requires patience, but once you get the hang of it, its a great ride. I recommend having a save for figuring the mechanics out then a second that will be your main save. Once you get to late game, it can get repetitive, but there is so much going on. I'm still finding quests that I haven't completed yet. My only complaint would be that the voiceover narration in the prologue and some cut scenes isn't entirely necessary, it can be a bit jarring compared to the rest of the game, but it might be helpful to others.
Comparing it to other games like Cosmology of Kyoto, which I assume has some influence, you can tell theres a lot of love and care for the material placed into the game. Yes, it is educational, but its still also a game. You will have fun solving the puzzles despite yourself. It's definitely not as dark as Cosmology and a much easier barrier to entry, but it has a similar vibe of feeling like you are journeying through the Edo period. The version in the game is more like a fantasy/sci fi version, almost steam punk in its use of travelling through other worlds, but it fits. I enjoyed seeing the different cultures that built up from the split, and the anthrolpological guides from the explorer. I'm not sure how much of it is rng or if it's programmed based on your playthrough, but I like how it felt personalized and my actions had consequences.
There's also a mode that is for learning vocabulary that gives experience points for your playthrough. I'll be completely honest, I was so engrossed in gameplay and the story that I really haven't learned much Japanese, but it makes me inspired to want to learn more.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

But it just doesn't work. The gameplay focusses on failure, not on success. The combination of hoser cards, and the ability to just exit and restart an expedition makes the entire experience pointless. When RNG doesn't work in your favour, you are helpfully hinted to restart - at no loss whatsoever to your progress (and indeed, the roguelike makes it a gain). The fact that there's a mild poke at save-scumming in the comments, the game actually rewards you for game-discarding, which is save-scumming writ large. The irony drips from every pore.
The card balance does not survive its own RNG. With the ability to walk away from poor RNG, on the other hand when the RNG works in your favour...well, it wasn't really your choice at all, was it now? The design principle that failures encountered are now 'known' slowly reduces your agency further. Instead of managing resources to strive towards new outcomes and discover new things, as time passes you know everything, which makes events just a 'click best choice' button. And if you lack the resources and have to choose a bad outcome, just press restart instead. The hosers are often so powerful as to make playing further a complete waste of timem, which is a cardinal sin of the highest order in any game IMO. "Agency be damned", which to me is the precise opposite of what gameplay should be.
So for my tastes the game is an immovable 'meh'. I feel absolutely no agency whatsoever, which makes the playing experience boring and tedious. Which is a real conundrum, because every other aspect of the game is something that i dearly love and should lead me towards this being a favorite title.

It's also a pretty good roguelite deckbuilder, almost separately to the above. You have a medium to large amount of control over the RNG of what you draw, since most card additions can instead be card removals. Event based card addition tends to just give you a new card straight up, but they also tend to be specific (and the events are consistent, you can always get that card from that event, if you take the same action) and higher quality than the typical random reward options. There's enough variety of events and forays and such that it doesn't feel like just doing the same thing over and over again moment to moment, although each expedition is fairly similar and I rarely feel like playing more than one or two in the same session. The metaprogression is gentle, with some solid bonuses that build up over time, and the game keeps deploying new types of challenge to match that - but you can always choose when to end a run and gain more rewards from realizing you probably couldn't win the next stage/foray/thing anyway, and ending before that happens.
