I tested the 1st Rusty Lake game to check and I noticed that its a still picture and is not registering my shaky right hand.
The problem with this (my problem, the game is awesome if your hand is not affected by MS like me) is that the game's picture can be moved with a click to look left and right, which is a great addition like I said, but unfortunately does not work with people with mobility issues.
May I suggest an accessibility setting, that turns the game into still scenes like the previous games please?

I've been playing Rusty Lake since the early Cube Escape games, and I've followed the series all these years. That's why this review comes more from the disappointment of a fan than from wanting to criticize the game just for the sake of it.
Servant of the Lake is definitely an improvement in some areas: the graphics, animations, and gameplay are more polished, and you can really see how much Rusty Lake has grown as a developer.
But personally, I feel like something has been lost along the way.
Up until The Past Within, I think the series had always kept one fundamental characteristic: a mysterious, unsettling atmosphere that was often difficult to fully explain. From Cube Escape to Hotel, Roots, Paradise, and the other games, the experience didn't need to explain everything to you. In fact, it was the opposite. You had to observe, connect clues, interpret what you were seeing, and often finish a game with more questions than answers.
And that's exactly what made Rusty Lake special.
With Servant of the Lake, I felt much less of that. The story is more straightforward, the progression is more guided, and the puzzles felt less challenging to me. Even the creepy atmosphere that I've always associated with the series feels much weaker.
I don't think Rusty Lake should stay exactly the same forever. I genuinely appreciate the technical improvements, and I'm happy to see how much the studio has grown.
What I hope, though, is that they don't confuse evolution with making everything more accessible and appealing to everyone.
I loved Rusty Lake because it was strange, cryptic, sometimes frustrating, and didn't try to explain everything to me. I don't necessarily want a game that everyone can enjoy. I want a game with its own personality.

I've played the previous Rusty Lake games, and I gotta say this one is definitely creepier and darker (there are even some small jump scares!). Loved the graphics and the characters who are wonderfully strange— and that's exactly what we love about them. The lore is very good, and I loved all these little hints from the previous Rusty Lake games. It makes me want to replay them all :)
The only thing I could criticize is the sound between chapters, which I found a little louder than it should be.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I quit out the game for a little while and when I came back items from the previous chapter weren't in my inventory. Restarting the chapter or restarting the game didn't work. Ended up having to reinstall the game. Apart from that small hiccup the game is great, just like all the Rusty Lake games. The puzzles are engaging and just difficult enough to not be obvious but also not ridiculously complicated :))

A disclaimer before I begin: this review may be quite blunt, and some of my criticism may sound harsh, but I mean no malice. I am leaving a negative review precisely because I have such a high opinion of, and such deep affection for, Rusty Lake’s previous games, and because I had extremely high expectations for the development team. I genuinely hope the developers can see what a longtime player thinks.
This game received a great deal of promotion and spent a long time in development. Combined with the consistently high quality of Rusty Lake’s previous works, expectations were naturally very high. Unfortunately, after finishing it, I found that it fell far short of those expectations. I would go so far as to call it the weakest entry in the entire Rusty Lake series. In fact, it barely feels like Rusty Lake at all. It feels more like a clumsy fan-made imitation created by someone outside the community who simply borrowed familiar Rusty Lake elements. It imitates the surface — and not even particularly well — while completely missing the spirit.
I think the development team should seriously consider why certain moments from the earlier games became so successful and memorable in the first place. Most of the things now being reused as Easter eggs originally stood out because they were bizarre, grotesque, surreal, or darkly humorous creations within their own games. By abandoning precisely those qualities in this entry, it becomes very difficult to create anything new that might become equally iconic in the future.
Looking back at the earlier Rusty Lake games:
- Hotel, Roots, and Paradise were filled with the grotesque and the absurd. They carried an almost medieval sense of fanaticism, fatalism, and inevitability that made them genuinely striking.
- The Cube Escape series and Paradox were permeated by a subtle, immersive sense of oppression and unease. Against modern settings, they explored ideas of time, life, recurrence, sacrifice, and cyclical existence with remarkable effectiveness. Their puzzle design was inventive and ingenious as well. The Mind Rooms and Brain Changing sequences in Paradox, in particular, were brilliant ideas that genuinely amazed me.
- The White Door and Underground Blossom, meanwhile, were filled with beauty, loneliness, tenderness, and poetry. Even after finishing them, their atmosphere lingered with me for a long time.
By comparison, Servant of the Lake feels more like a family soap opera. It lacks narrative and philosophical depth, meaningful character development, a distinctive atmosphere, and any real sense of aesthetic beauty.
I can understand that the development team may want to broaden the audience for Rusty Lake. But frankly, given how well-known the series already is, I think it has essentially reached most of its potential audience. Continuing to make the games more conventional, simplistic, and childish in an attempt to appeal to a broader audience risks doing the opposite: alienating the very players who made Rusty Lake successful in the first place.

This shift had already started in Underground Blossom, and since that game takes place in a relatively modern setting, it was at least somewhat understandable there. Even so, I still found it far less fitting than the typewriter-style font in Case 23 or the handwritten lettering in Seasons.
I can understand that the developers may have made this change to improve readability, but it also comes at the cost of immersion and atmosphere. Details like typography are not trivial: when they no longer match the visual and narrative world of the game, they create a subtle but noticeable disconnect between the individual elements and the overall aesthetic.
Is the development team really trying to make every distinctive aspect of Rusty Lake more “harmless” and inoffensive? Part of Rusty Lake’s beauty has always been its sharp edges. Another related issue is the visual style. As the graphics have become increasingly polished, detailed, and cartoon-like, they have paradoxically begun to lose some of the distinctive character that made Rusty Lake feel like Rusty Lake.
The older games were visually much rougher and simpler, but that roughness was part of their identity. The stiff character designs, strange proportions, restrained animation, muted imagery, and slightly crude presentation created a sense of distance, uncanniness, and unease that suited the stories perfectly. They did not look conventionally “beautiful,” but they were immediately recognizable and extraordinarily atmospheric.
In the newer games, the artwork is undoubtedly more refined from a technical standpoint, but it also feels smoother, softer, and more like conventional cartoon illustration. As the visuals become more polished, they also become more approachable and less unsettling. Once again, something that may appear to be an objective improvement in production quality ends up weakening the atmosphere.
The problem is not that Rusty Lake should never improve its graphics. It is that technical refinement should serve the series’ artistic identity rather than gradually replacing it. Rusty Lake’s old visual language was imperfect, but those imperfections were part of its personality. If everything is made cleaner, smoother, friendlier, and more conventionally appealing, eventually there may be very little left of the distinctive “Rusty Lake feeling” beyond familiar characters and recurring symbols.

The identities of both the protagonist and the person behind everything can be guessed almost immediately. The characters are flat, and their behavior often feels implausibly foolish. The plot progresses in an utterly uneventful way, with virtually no meaningful twists, while the ending itself is equally plain and underdeveloped. It has none of the impact that Paradise, Roots, or Paradox had. 2. The story has lost the philosophical core of Rusty Lake.
There is almost none of the reflection on life, time, cycles, and recurrence that made the narratives of the earlier games so compelling. One of the most fascinating elements at the heart of Rusty Lake’s storytelling is simply absent here. 3. It was my first time playing a game on release day and I had so much fun going through it all blind. Being back at the lake, witnessing all the weirdness and trying to keep up with the housework while trying to solve all the puzzles was quite the journey. The puzzles are very clear compared to their other games. Achievements are easy to get without any help whatsoever. In my opinion, the game continues the atmosphere of the Rusty Lake series perfectly. The story is still mysteriously confusing and completely crazy, while the puzzles are illogical and sometimes quite brutal - exactly what keeps me a fan of the series. I really liked the new gameplay feature: we now have a journal that, besides the tasks themselves (fortunately, they are quite general), also keeps track of additional achievements and lets you write or draw your own notes. I ended up drawing the cat almost every time it appeared. And yes, you can pet the cat many, many times. 🐈 After finishing the game, you can also use the journal to return and complete any achievements you missed. I definitely recommend the game to fans of the series.

На мою думку, гра чудово продовжує атмосферу серії Rusty Lake. Історія все ще божевільно незрозуміла та містична, а головоломки - нелогічні й місцями жорстокі. Саме це й тримає мене прихильницею серії. Дуже сподобалася нова механіка - тепер у нас є щоденник, де, крім самих завдань (на щастя, досить загальних), є відмітки про додаткові досягнення та можливість вписувати або вмальовувати щось своє. Я там замальовувала майже кожну появу котика. Так, у грі є можливість багато-багато разів гладити котика. 🐈 До того ж після проходження можна через щоденник повернутися за нездобутими досягненнями. Однозначно рекомендую гру любителям серії. \t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
\n\n\t\t\t\tIn my opinion, the game continues the atmosphere of the Rusty Lake series perfectly. The story is still mysteriously confusing and completely crazy, while the puzzles are illogical and sometimes quite brutal - exactly what keeps me a fan of the series. I really liked the new gameplay feature: we now have a journal that, besides the tasks themselves (fortunately, they are quite general), also keeps track of additional achievements and lets you write or draw your own notes. I ended up drawing the cat almost every time it appeared. And yes, you can pet the cat many, many times. 🐈 After finishing the game, you can also use the journal to return and complete any achievements you missed. I definitely recommend the game to fans of the series.

Weird ever expanding lore, a unsettling story with some callbacks to previous games, strange puzzles. It's as good as ever, the game isn't that hard, or is it perhaps that I played all of the games and are getting used to the kind of puzzles the dev use, even if they are new. There is a speccific kind of logic and philosophy that they have in their puzzle design, and that's not a bad thing, in fact it makes the games very consistently good in the puzzles.
After finishing the game there are some additional puzzles and achievements to find, but you can replay the short chapters after finishing the game, so don't worry about getting everything in the first run, in fact you absolutely won't do everything in one run. Just enjoy the weird story and great puzzles. You will probably need to look up some of the achievements, or click around and try new things a lot because some are really obscure, but there is a pretty good guide here on steam that only give you hints but no spoilers.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I imagine it must be very difficult to come up with new puzzles and to integrate them so that the player doesn't get bored, and they absolutely nailed that, even after so many games. Servant of the Lake may not be the most impressive Rusty Lake game in its imagery and symbolism, but it is absolutely essential for the story and adds depth to what we've seen in past games. Servant of the Lake is another wonderful entry in the legendary Rusty Lake series, and in my opinion, it perfectly preserves the distinctive style that I’ve always loved these games for. Most importantly, the atmosphere remains virtually unchanged: it’s still dark, mysterious, surreal, and genuinely creepy at times. That unique combination of everyday life and something deeply wrong lurking beneath the surface has always been one of Rusty Lake’s greatest strengths.
I especially enjoyed how the game allows us to see the Vanderboom family from a completely different perspective. We find ourselves inside their mansion, taking on the role of a servant responsible for the most ordinary household chores. Yet, in typical Rusty Lake fashion, even doing the laundry, cleaning, or setting the table gradually turns into something strange and unsettling.
The soundtrack is, as always, excellent. The music complements the events perfectly and enhances the sense of mystery and unease. It’s especially enjoyable to hear familiar musical motifs that evoke memories of previous games in the series.
One of the new mechanics I particularly appreciated is the notebook, which allows you to write down clues and make notes. As someone with a terrible memory, I’d like to give the developers a special thank-you for this.

You don’t have to constantly guess what exactly the developers expect from you, and you’re more often able to figure things out on your own.

First and foremost, amazing story! I am a fan of the Lake series and I must say I did not expect this one to be as great as it is! If you know the previous stories, you'll find some easter eggs along the way. Most of the puzzles are pretty easy to solve. There were only two where I had to find someone else playing and see I was just placing an item not in the exact spot to trigger the next section of the story.
My only regret is that the game isn't longer! Price you pay with current content is 100% on point.

Servant of the Lake is such a natural step forward for both the lore of the world and the devs - I'm not even done yet and I would say it's easily one of their best games. In a world of AI slop, it is so evident everything here was created with care, intention, and a love for their fanbase. SO many easter eggs and still new things being discovered around every corner. If you're just here for a phenomenal point-and-click puzzle game - you're in for a treat. BUT! If you want some of the best gameplay and lore-building you can get IN a puzzle game, buy the extremely reasonably priced bundle and experience this world from its roots (no pun intended). I adore Rusty Lake and have been following them for a decade. This game blew every other game out of the water (not to disparage any of the other games, which are also incredible!) -- the quality was outstanding. The puzzles were just the right level of challenging without getting frustrating, the art voice acting was delightful (those paintings!! Johan knocked it out of the park!), the game got genuinely scary at times, great great atmosphere and tension there, and the story and the lore was phenomenal. The ending literally had me fist pumping and shouting YEAH!! all giddily out loud, what a great reveal! Everything in that last chapter was simply delicious. I'd anticipated the "who" aspect of the first twist at dinner since the foreshadowing was really expertly done, the clues were there and it was rewarding to piece that mystery together as I played, but I was still shocked when it happened, and its dramatic change in pace. I was totally blindsided with the final big reveal, though in retrospect I probably should've suspected it! I had such a fun time serving the Vanderboom siblings in all their awful eccentricness, I'm over the moon at having some long-standing questions answered, and I'm excited to start achievement hunting! Amazing job, Rusty Lake -- I paused playing barely halfway thru the game to tell my friend that this was your best game by a landslide and the freakiest, and I wholeheartedly stand by that statement now that I've finished.
