If you enjoyed BG3 and wished they'd get rid of all the talking and camp management, then hey, this is right up your alley. This is pure combat and build tweaking.
The replayability is high, though you can finish the game in an evening. For 15 bucks that's pretty good.
However, Forsworn still needs polish, and a decent amount of it. I wouldn't say it needs to be more detailed, but more stylized. The repeating textures could be hidden or changed to be less of an eyesore. Put a little more love into the characterization, maybe let you change the colors on the characters.

Is it a good game? That’s debatable. It certainly deserves the attention of genre enthusiasts, but it also has plenty of flaws.

To earn a higher rating, the game needs a major overhaul of its item system, as well as improvements to balance and variety.

"Normal Battles" That reinforce enemies over and over, taking forever and just absolutely swarming you with mobs. Meanwhile, most AOE abilities are undertuned and generally poorly able to handle the masses.
Taunting options are few and far between and the 5 out of 10 enemies you couldn't taunt will just swarm and one shot your squishies because there is no such thing as zone of control and no way to block their access to you.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI love this game. People have compared it to Baldurs Gate 3 + Slay The Spire, but I actually think it is much closer to Slay The Spire. It only superficially resembles BG3, where as mechanically it is much closer to STS, except with less RNG during combat.
That is one of the things I enjoy about this game is that there isn't a huge element of RNG when it comes to tactical situations (mainly just damage rolls). RNG comes into play more so in what drops you will get/what skills are offered. I like this because it simulates going on a journey to the unknown, but still maintaining your faculties while you do it- you don't suddenly forget how to swing a sword.
The game isn't perfect in terms of execution, I've noticed some bugs that force me to close and re-open the game. I don't know if its because I'm using a controller or not but every so often I lose the ability to do anything except open a menu with the controller. Exiting and reopening has fixed it. Also some of the text for skills etc have really poor contrast, like white text on yellow background- basically impossible to read while playing on my TV.
In terms of gameplay its 10/10 though, and thankfully the stuff that detracts from the experience could be patched, assuming it isn't inherent to my own setup. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tForsworn has a solid foundation and a lot of potential, but right now it feels more like an early build than a finished game. If you enjoy Across the Obelisk, you'll recognize the formula right away, and the core combat loop is enjoyable. The problem is everything around it: thin content, a heavily RNG-driven item system, underwhelming progression, and plenty of rough edges. Here's a breakdown of what I think needs work.
\n\n\t\t\t\tCombat
- Positioning: Heroes and enemies start in the same spots every fight, which gets monotonous. Random enemy placement and letting players position their own characters would add real strategy. The current setup can even work against you. For example, an aura character placed on the far left only reaches one ally instead of two.
- Environmental interactions: Objects you could attack or trigger for combos would add depth.
- Starting abilities: They feel underwhelming, and there's a big gap between early abilities and building real synergies. In most runs I either never assembled a complementary combo set or only managed it by the final fight. I'd suggest revamping them or letting us customize starting abilities with shards.
- Enemy intent: A built-in feature or unlockable perk that shows enemies' upcoming moves and expected damage would help.
- Buffs/debuffs: Show these on hover so you can see them at a glance instead of clicking into each character.
- Targeting clarity:
- Multi-hit abilities need clear highlighting of who you've targeted for each hit, and different colors per hit would help. With a 3-hit ability, it's hard to tell whether your first hit was assigned and on whom.
- Some abilities, like the Archer's Dual Shot, don't show who will be hit.
- AOE targeting is buggy, especially near raised walkways and platforms.
- Multi-hit abilities need clear highlighting of who you've targeted for each hit, and different colors per hit would help. With a 3-hit ability, it's hard to tell whether your first hit was assigned and on whom.
- Undo button: Even a single-action undo would help. Too many times I clicked to switch characters, accidentally moved one instead, and ruined an attack.
UI & Quality of Life
- The hero selection and management screens feel clunky and tedious to navigate.
- End-of-run achievements appear one at a time, so you have to click through each one, and there are usually a lot. Showing them all at once in a list would be much better.
- Clicking through story and dialogue text feels clunky.
- Achievements should clearly explain how to earn them and what the reward actually does. Having rewards hidden behind hidden achievements was frustrating.
Exploration
- The free-roam sections before and after battles feel half-baked. I'd like to see them expanded to reward exploration beyond just chests, while keeping the new option to skip them for players who don't enjoy that part.
Progression & Roguelike Elements
- Shard unlocks: Most feel unappealing and low-impact. A damage increase should make me feel like I hit harder each run, but everything felt samey along with being way to expensive for some.
- Account-wide progression: I'd prefer shard spending that applies across all characters rather than being character-specific, along with more to work toward overall.
- New characters: Starting a new character with nothing unlocked is painful. Grinding unlocks just to access mediocre starting abilities gave me no motivation to try other characters. Even my main characters ran out of steam at level 20, and those unlocks were lackluster.
- RNG: Runs are very RNG-heavy for gear, items, abilities, and blessings. Letting players use shards to make these more consistent would help a lot.
- Items: Too many items only work with very specific other items or abilities, and you can go a whole run without seeing those. The game needs more items overall, or better ways to find the ones you need.
- Legendary drops: The "guaranteed drop" system needs clearer explanation or a rework.
- Blessings: These could use more variety.
- Run pacing: Runs often only get fun in the last 2-4 fights of the final act, once your build finally comes together. Options to extend runs or adjust the ramp-up would help.
Bugs
- When moving the party, trailing characters lag behind the one you control. Once you cross the boundary line they stop, so you lose movement because they're a couple of steps behind.
- With the new auto-loot chests option, loot sometimes doesn't seem to get added.
- The rewards screen seems to show only the encounter reward and not items from chests, at least not consistently.
Other
- Mod support would be great.
Verdict
Forsworn is fun in stretches, and I can see what it's going for. In its current state, though, I'd suggest waiting. It needs more content, better balance and item design, more rewarding progression, and a solid round of polish and bug fixes. It also isn't very challenging or strategy-heavy, so don't go in expecting that.
