I understand why lotta people who love these games feel disrespected by the term. The word "slop" already has a pretty negative connotation. We hear it in things like "AI-slop," where it usually describes something cheap, low-effort, or mass-produced.
I use the term because I see it as a "new genre" of co-op games, games designed around playing with more than 2 people. Just like how we use terms like "Metroidvania," "Souls-like", "Simulator", or "Incremental". They are genre that help us describe games that share certain characteristics. Not to mention I don't use "Friendslop" as an insult. I hope it finds a new term that fits better.
And you'll see comments like, "You just hate it because you don't have friends or a group to play with" or, "Your group probably gets bored with these games easily." But I don't think that's necessarily true.
Games like R.E.P.O. and MecCha Chameleon have public servers, so you aren't completely locked out of the experience just because your usual group isn't online. You can drop into a random lobby and play with strangers. Or you can find people through the community (discord, example). And maybe you might get along with them. And then add each other afterward, play again, or move on to another Friendslop game.
Now, let's say you already have a group to play with. Another comment pops up. "You paid for a Friendslop game and only got an hour or so of fun. Is it "wasted" your time?" How about I ask you a familiar question, amigo.
1. What's the difference between that and going to the cinema, where you pay for a 2-3 hour movie?
2. What's the difference between that and going to a concert, where you might pay even more for a few hours of show?
Is it waste your time? i don't think so. I don't think the value determined by its duration. What makes something worth it can be the moment, the experience, or the memory.
When I think about the value of a game, I usually look at what the game itself gives me, "How much content it has, how many hours I can play, how many mechanics it has, or how much there is left to discover?"
Let me take examples from my 2 friendslop games, R.E.P.O. and PEAK. After hundreds of hours spent in both, I've noticed that they share a lot in common. But there's one major difference: One has an endpoint, one does not.
1. R.E.P.O.'s core is on moments with people. The gameplay itself is just the medium. No matter how many levels you clear, it just keeps going. It runs on an endless loop. The levels get harder and harder until you eventually fail. "Winning" a round just unlocks... another round.
2. PEAK, has an actual endpoint, an achievable finish line, and that is reaching the peak. Once you're up there, the run is over and you did it. Because of that, its core leans more toward its gameplay mechanics. Stamina, hunger, health, weight, items, and even reading the routes through each biome all matter if you want to reach the peak. If you fail, you can restart, find another route, and plan a new strategy.
These two games have different focuses, but they still share a similar experience. And I'm glad that both managed to achieve such good longevity. Updates like cosmetics in R.E.P.O., or new biomes in PEAK. Also, the modding community that can completely change the way you experience these games, adding new mechanics, challenges, and making the game even more fun and chaotic.
I believe what Friendslop really about is not the "Slop". Sometimes, you just want to hang out with other people. And video games happen to be one of the places where we can do that. The game becomes a social space.
With friends, the game becomes a frame for shared memories.
With strangers, every lobby becomes a kind of social experiment. You don't know who you're going to meet. You play with them and maybe you'll never see them again. Or maybe you'll add each other afterward and end up playing together again later.
These games can even give you a reason to bring your old friend back from the grave. Someone you haven't talked to in months suddenly texted, "Wanna play?" And for a few hours, you're just hanging out again.
Until eventually, the time ends. The updates get old. The server closes. And one day you stop playing entirely. Maybe your friends do too. But you still remember what happened. The dumb decisions. The accidental betrayals. The screaming. The unpredictable one. The game was never the entire experience. The people are too. The game becomes a place where you make the memory.

But somewhere between all of that, you start talking about your day, about life, about things you probably wouldn't have brought up if you were just sitting in a Discord call with nothing to do.
PEAK gives you something to do while you're spending time with the people you care about. And I think that's what makes it so special.
And somehow, it's just as lovely alone, when your friends aren't around, PEAK doesn't suddenly become an empty experience. There's something strangely peaceful about climbing by yourself. It's you, the mountain, and the quiet determination to see how far you can make it. The game is challenging, but it also has this warmth to it that I genuinely can't explain.
I've played plenty of games that are fun.
I've played games with better graphics, bigger worlds, and more things to do.

Genuinely a really fun hiking game you can play with your friends! Climbing mechanics are really solid, I absolutely love just trying to visualise viable routes and trying to climb up the mountain. Itโs challenging and varied enough to keep runs fairly interesting. The extra difficulty options also are just a nice addition to tune the experience to your liking if you want something a bit more lenient or are a challenge seeker.
Truthfully, Iโm not the biggest fan of the โfriendslopโ elements or even the genre as a whole, but Peak is mostly mechanically solid in its design and mechanics that youโre in control basically 90% of the time.
Thereโs a bit of jank that can completely blindside you, whether it be a random tornado spawn, a trap you couldnโt have seen coming, a glitch that gets you stuck in the floor, or grabbing a fellow scoutโs hand over and over because of slightly jank footing costing you all your stamina.
Most of this is avoidable, but mistakes are so punishing and can often permanently affect the rest of the run provided you are unprepared.
Most of the time though, Peak runs are good, simple fun! Good game to boot up if you have a spare 2 hours with your friends. Your mileage may vary depending on what kind of vibe your friend group has.

Since the Mesa update, it feels like hazards for zones have become more unreasonable and stacking to a degree that is meant to push out casual players. Not everyone has the same amount of free time and will be able to play on "easier days" because of the map system, and turning off intended game mechanics feels like cheating.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tBeen playing the game since around launch, originally I intended on attempting 100% the game but lacked the time and motivation. ever since the gloom update I was once again filled with a burst of determination to attempt to experience all this game has to offer, and it was all worth it, this is the most fun I have had trying to complete a game for everything that it's got in years, with the help of my girlfriend I was able to finally finish off everything after a year of wanting to do so.
this is one of my favorite indie games to come out and it's just such a blast to play.

There's a huge selection of useful items like medicine and climbing gear to help you progress, but also dangerous ones like blowguns, mushrooms, and daggers that can lead to total chaos or even the end of the game. This makes every playthrough different. The rotating map concept perfectly complements the game's randomness. Also the latest patch with the new biome is a perfect finishing touch. Playing with a few friends is always a lot of fun.

Just a small sample of the player-to-player dialogue you can look forward to, should you accept the awesome challenge posed by this highly treacherous co-op climbing simulator.
Despite the appalling difficulty - though I nearly made it to the end of my first attempt, thanks to a friend who's much better at games than I am literally "carrying" me most of the way! - I can safely say there's much to admire here. The insanely dynamic voice chat, for instance, where your voices become increasingly muddied due to distance; the upside being how easy it is to pinpoint one another when you've lost track! Not to mention an impressive, singular "energy/health" gauge, where factors like hunger and damage are represented by how much they cut into your all-important Stamina bar. Can't say I've seen that before, but it's logical enough...
"Peak" gaming? Not for me, I wouldn't say. But a "fun" game, absolutely...at least for the fearless. Anyone else, I suspect, shouldn't expect to get very far at first as the learning curve is huuuuuge...but for those open to trials-by-mother-f-ing FIRE...
Verdict: 8/10.
