\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tOkko The Exiled has been the most fun I've had with a platformer in years, at least since Hollow Knight, and despite Okko's smaller size and scope, I would firmly put it into a must-play category for anyone who deeply enjoys platforming, or is looking for fun 2D action combat that encourages usage of every mechanic available to you, and eventually pushes into a satisfying level of difficulty without ever once crossing the line into feeling as though difficulty took precedence over design. Okko truly is as close to a 10/10 experience as I could ever hope for from a relatively small-scale indie game of this length, and is well worth the asking price.
I want to briefly initially touch on the game's length before going into more detail about everything. Despite my current playtime, I'd say that this game is more of a 20 hour experience than a 10 hour experience, and if you're not terribly familiar with platformers or 2D action combat, it could be more than 20 hours as well. To be frank, I simply started playing and couldn't put it down until I hit 100% in-game. This will not be a long game if you really sink your teeth into platformers and action combat, but it will be immensely satisfying. This will be a slightly longer game if you're looking to play it very casually, but you won't regret taking your time or lingering in any of the wonderful areas at any point. Okko The Exiled does not overstay its welcome, and though, due to my extremely high enjoyment of it, I can't deny wishing it was longer, it is certainly missing nothing.
Art:
The art might as well be rated 11/10. I truly do not consider any other 2D pixelated game to remotely come close to the sheer beauty that oozes out of every frame here. Each area is extremely distinct, yet the entirely of the game itself has a coherent art-style and design that makes every region fit into the game's world without question, having left me legitimately excited for each new region, and never disappointed when I reached them. The color palates are so striking that the aforementioned coherency feels like magic, and even made me wonder why no one else seems to use deep vivid indigo paired with pale gold when it looks so damn fantastic in certain areas in this game.
The character designs are equally wonderful, and in an equivocal manner to the backgrounds, span a wide breadth of various designs, color schemes, and visual personalities while still feeling perfectly natural in their world despite the variety. Okko in particular is so well designed as the controllable protagonist, down to each one of his animations feeling perfectly suited to his character (of course, this includes the manner in which he swims). The boss and miniboss designs, again, are wonderfully distinct and visually memorable. The normal enemies, as one would expect, aren't as intricate as the characters or bosses, but they retain the same expert artistic design and coherence as everything else, and to be honest there are also several stand-out normal enemies that have extremely unique and memorable designs all the same. For a game of this size, the enemy variety is substantial, though perhaps the only criticism I have is that there are a few times times where a miniboss is reused once, as well as a certain miniboss that makes a handful of reappearances. Though in the latter instance, there’s enough time between fights that you have new options and feel more powerful when you fight them, which keeps things a bit more interesting.
Music:
The music is wonderful and perfectly lends to the game’s atmosphere. It manages to keep coherence throughout the different tracks, while having a nostalgic older-game quality as well, yet also uses beautifully played real instruments on top of the more synthetic sounds too.

Things do ramp up a bit near the end, but not in a way that ever felt like an exposition dump, and not in a way that felt like it messed up the pacing of the game either. There are certain aspects of the lore and plot that I would have loved more information about, but nothing prevented the story from feeling fully complete, and none of those pieces of information got in the way of understanding what was happening in a general sense, even when things became their most 'mystical'. If anything, I came away wishing that I could read a whole book about Kutala and everyone and everything in it, which I can really only consider a very favorable outcome. I very much appreciate having such a creative and unique set of concepts presented in a way that conveys a lot without explaining too much, while still coherently telling the story it wants to tell.
In tandem with the lore and mysticism are more standard themes mingling with a simple and heartfelt coming of age/call to heroism story. Actually liking the character you're playing as regardless of all else happening around them is perhaps a sensation that a lot of games no longer manage to grasp terribly well, and I would say that rooting for Okko while playing is also a solid testament to the game's writing quality, despite the game's shorter length. The pacing of the game never felt too slow or fast to me either, so as much as I would have loved to spend more time in Kutala, and more time with these characters, I wouldn't want to trade such a polished final experience for that notion.
Combat and Platforming:
I do not believe I've played another 2D action combat game that managed to condense a wide range of distinct attack moves, a core central 'gimmick', and permanent mobility/attack upgrades into combat where everything is so comprehensively utilized. Bear in mind, that because this is a shorter game, there is both 'less room to implement enemies and areas that utilize a wide variety of mechanics' and 'less time to develop the main character's abilities'. Somehow, with Okko, neither of these things impeded the journey through developing combat, or the endgame combat, at all.
Each area teaches new lessons and reinforces old ones. How Okko moves and fights, and how bosses move and fight, WILL be taught to you by the end of the game, but it will feel as though you taught yourself, and getting into a flow state for combat or platforming feels amazing, as does walloping through some of the optional difficult mob fights.
Speaking of platforming, this game’s platforming design is top notch; it favors fun design and clever thinking over anything ‘troll-ish’, and has incredible mechanical variety for a game of its size. As someone who loves good platforming challenges, I can’t praise it enough. This game has multiple difficult and fun optional challenges, including something that I found even more fun than the Path of Pain from Hollow Knight, and of similar difficulty, though a bit shorter.
This game has a steady difficulty curve that remains from start to finish, going from what I would consider very easy to hard enough to take you some time, thought, preparation, and effort through a good handful of attempts. This excludes harder optional content.

I recommend this game, but with some nitpicks.
If you like Shovel Knight, this is great. Solid platforming, well-spaced upgrades, and meaningful mechanics. The heartbeat mechanic that you can time your attacks to is persistent throughout the game, and increases in effectiveness with a focus mode that you can turn on and off with a meter. You can also use a slower attack that knocks enemies around, including into walls, spikes, and each other. For how simple the combat seems on the surface, it's actually deep when engaging with all of the mechanics.
VIsually, this game is absolutely beautiful. Moonshen is a great artist, and the entire game reflects their talent. There's not a single character or enemy design that I don't like. Occasionally it was somewhat difficult to tell if something was a platform or just background, but it wasn't often enough to make any difference in the gameplay.
The game is a little short for my normal taste, but at $15, I'm not worried about that part. There's 8 bosses if you include the secret boss, and two levels before each, except the final boss, which has a transition area between it and the boss before it. There are a handful of mid-bosses as well. The game also includes some bonus levels (for lack of a better word) that are accessible via an elevator that unlocks more floors (up to 20) as you find collectibles in the normal levels. I wouldn't call any of the level design groundbreaking, but it's perfectly serviceable and enjoyable.
Now for the nitpicks.
It feels like there is no input buffer whatsoever. When first starting out, jumping immediately after landing was difficult because pushing the button even slightly too early would result in no jump at all. You get used to it, but the game is very precise in the later levels and bonus levels, so an input buffer would do a ton of good.
In the options menu, there's no real visual way to tell if an option is on or off. There's a switch graphic, but it doesn't say on/off, or grey out when off, or change color or anything. The switch is just left and right with no way to tell which is which. This is pretty easily fixed and will likely be fixed in an update shortly.
Projectiles don't feel very useful at all until the later levels, because you get so few early on. To fire your projectile, you have to pick one up (you can hold up to 3, 4 with an equippable "pact") or use a potion to instantly fill them to max. The potion is expensive to buy, and you find very few. Would you rather spend 1000 gold on a one-time use potion, or 4000 for a permanent upgrade? The cost of the potions is really high for very little benefit, with the exception of the health potion, which I think is fine since it fully heals you.
Money is WAY more important than it seems in this game. Whenever you die, you drop some (200 ish? Maybe a percentage? I didn't pay enough attention to know exactly) and respawn at the last checkpoint. What the game NEVER tells you is that if you run out of money, you cannot respawn at a checkpoint, it goes back to the beginning of the level. I discovered this on accident WHILE FIGHTING THE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT SECRET BOSS. This is my largest complaint of the game, by far, but it's because of how I discovered it. The secret boss is different from other bosses in the way that the other bosses are their own level with nothing in them but the fight itself. The secret boss ALSO has a VERY difficult level you have to go through to get to the fight. There's a checkpoint before the fight, but I went into the stage with very little money since I thought it was the last thing I was doing, and THEN found out that dropping to 0 gold and dying sends you back to the beginning. I will not be finishing that boss. I would have to farm up a bunch of money, suffer through that difficult tower, and then reacclimate myself to the boss's patterns, hoping to not run out of money in the process. It was never a problem on ANY of the other levels or bosses, so I had no idea it was a mechanic at all. PLEASE at LEAST explain that somewhere in the game. I would prefer that the secret boss had its own level without the tower, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ was that an infuriating moment for me.
In the end, I do think this game is very good. I enjoyed it right up until that secret boss fiasco.
Edit: I have one other suggestion.
The heartbeat mechanic would be more fun if it either matched the music, or maybe got faster at low health or during boss fights to show that Okko's heart is beating faster from the adrenaline or something. My partner just ignored the heartbeat because it was just a constant thing that didn't correspond to anything else going on.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Both the platforming and the combat sit in a nice goldilocks zone of being challenging enough to be engaging without becoming tedious. The game's systems are also very well designed. I'm normally the type to forget to use various meters, special abilities, or consumables. But I've been finding it very intuitive to mix in all the tools the game is giving me. The level designs have been nice and varied, both aesthetically and gameplay wise. And the music is good enough that I've stopped to listen to it.

I read some reviews about the controls feeling jank before I bought the game, and while I don't fully agree overall, there is one critical issue with jumping. For some reason you need to be grounded longer than usual before consecutive jumps are executed. In other platformers, it almost feels like you can hit jump BEFORE you land your previous jump, and it still accepts the input for the second jump. In this game though, you have to be fully grounded for a frame or two before it accepts the jump input, and it feels very janky.
On the upside, the swing attack is really nice, and you feel powerful when you can one shot birds that normally take a few hits to kill, not to mention hitting them into other things to hurt them. It can get very annoying in games like this where you're constantly hitting stuff over and over, and that mechanic addresses the issue very well. The heartbeat timing attack mechanic was actually useful a few times killing the boss when I had no projectiles, although I think it would work better if you hit the enemies according to THEIR heartbeats, and timer showed up on the enemies instead of the character sprite.
Overall nice game, good music, interesting characters and fun combat. Also no framerate cap is so great, the screen panning is super smooth, I still have no clue why pixel games don't all do this. Definitely would recommend and will check in from time to time.

I really liked it. The whole syncretic mix of themes for the lore, the cutesy sprites, the fairly balanced progression and difficulty curve for the gameplay (barring the downstrike mechanic which I didn't really find that hard, but your mileage may vary), all combined to make this game feel like a labour of love.
A minor piece of advice is that roughly the first half of the game allows you to be sloppy, the final half requires more patience and finesse. Just whacking things willy-nilly with Okko's Kanabo won't cut it.
Some might say you'll have to follow your heart! But it does build towards a proper rewarding experience.
And then you get to the credits and see that the bulk of the game was made by 3 guys, that basically got 5 bucks each from me for this...Money well spent!
In earlier generations of videogames, this might have been a much bigger franchise, as the lore could easily have gone either way between a Spyro and a DMC, but since that's mostly impossible nowadays, I'm really glad games like this are still being made. Indies for the win, I guess.

The whole syncretic mix of themes for the lore, the cutesy sprites, the fairly balanced progression and difficulty curve for the gameplay (barring the downstrike mechanic which I didn't really find that hard, but your mileage may vary), all combined to make this game feel like a labour of love.
A minor piece of advice is that roughly the first half of the game allows you to be sloppy, the final half requires more patience and finesse. Just whacking things willy-nilly with Okko's Kanabo won't cut it.
Some might say you'll have to follow your heart! But it does build towards a proper rewarding experience.
And then you get to the credits and see that the bulk of the game was made by 3 guys, that basically got 5 bucks each from me for this...Money well spent!
In earlier generations of videogames, this might have been a much bigger franchise, as the lore could easily have gone either way between a Spyro and a DMC, but since that's mostly impossible nowadays, I'm really glad games like this are still being made. Indies for the win, I guess.

This is a great game, quite a bit is scripted with bosses and you do lose currency when dying but the difficulty is fair enough that the penalty doesn't impact your progression. Although bosses are scripted - it was still incredibly satisfying to beat them. If you want a platformer you can kick back and relax and enjoy, this is absolutely it. It took me some getting used to the controls specially with bouncing on stuff because it felt kind of stiff and some people may find it problematic but I honestly forgot about it the longer I played.
There are quite the number of repeat boss fights which I wasn't frankly fond of but the real highlight is the archons of each zone with their respective unique movesets and backstories so it still balances out.
The combat mechanics were pretty simple and easy to learn but takes some time mastering hitting things to the beat of your heart <3 The Pact system will add a bit of flavor to your experience and can help aid you on your quest.
