Despite this being a negative review, I want to start by saying something positive.
ARK gave me some of my favorite gaming memories ever.
It was unlike anything else at the time. Survival, base building, taming dinosaurs, breeding, exploring massive maps—there was nothing quite like it. I joined a PvP server, but instead of constant griefing, it became a community. Most of us treated it like PvE with PvP enabled. We helped each other, welcomed new players, and built friendships instead of trying to wipe each other every night.
In fact, I met friends on that server that I'm still talking to almost 10 years later. That's something very few games can say.
We dealt with map changes that forced us to move our base multiple times. It was frustrating, but we understood the game was evolving. Eventually we built what we thought would be our forever base.
Then Wildcard introduced cross-server transfers.
That single update destroyed our server.
Alpha Tribes from other servers could suddenly transfer in with years of progress, powerful dinosaurs, and far more time invested than the average player. They weren't interested in joining our community—they came to wipe it.
Bases disappeared.
Breeding lines disappeared.
Entire tribes quit.
Our little community that had been thriving for years was gone within weeks.
That was the end of ARK for me.
Fast forward to 2023.
Wildcard announced ARK: Survival Ascended, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5.
Instead of upgrading existing owners like many studios have done with engine upgrades, they expected everyone to buy the game again. Originally they even planned to bundle it with ARK 2 before community backlash changed those plans.
The part that still bothers me in 2026 is this:
ARK 2 still doesn't exist.
Official ARK: Survival Evolved servers were shut down, everyone was pushed toward buying Ascended, and the sequel that was used to justify many of those decisions still has no release date.
If you're watching YouTube videos, you'll probably see incredible graphics, massive dinosaur battles, and huge bases.
What you won't always see is what living with this game is like over the long term:
Thousands of hours can disappear because of developer decisions.
Major updates can completely change how your server plays.
PvP balance can shift overnight.
Bugs and performance issues have been a recurring part of the ARK experience since the beginning.
If you invest hundreds or thousands of hours, understand that nothing is guaranteed to stay the same.
One statistic really surprised me.
Even in 2026, after Wildcard shut down the official ARK: Survival Evolved servers and pushed everyone toward Ascended, the original game is still holding its own. Over the last 24 hours, ARK: Survival Evolved reached a peak of 24,530 concurrent players, while ARK: Survival Ascended reached 34,735.
Yes, Ascended has more players, but for a remake that replaced the original, shut down its official servers, and was built in Unreal Engine 5, I expected the difference to be much larger. The fact that so many people are still choosing to play the original says a lot.
If you're watching YouTube videos and thinking about buying ARK because it looks amazing—and it does look amazing—understand what you're getting yourself into. You're not just buying a survival game. You're buying into years of developer decisions that can fundamentally change how you play. Servers can disappear, official support can end, mechanics can change overnight, and if history is any indication, you may eventually be asked to buy the game all over again. That's the part no cinematic trailer or YouTube montage will ever show you.
I don't regret my 840 hours.
I regret the direction the game took.
I met lifelong friends because of ARK, and I'll always appreciate that.

Until the developers make the game's size manageable, I can't recommend it. I won't be installing it again.

I honestly did not want to write a negative review for ARK: Survival Evolved. It has been, and still is, one of my favorite survival games ever made. I started playing ARK on my PS4 back in the day, so I have seen how much the game has evolved over the years.
The thing about this game is that it has a FANTASTIC concept: you are dropped into a harsh map or environment and given the freedom to do whatever you want, with the unique gameplay feature of taming dinosaurs to fight alongside you or help you during your adventure. It is an incredible concept, and when ARK works, it is genuinely one of the most fun survival games out there.
The thing that makes me sick about this game, however, is the sheer number of bugs you constantly encounter. For me, they are often game-breaking. I can't even boot up the game successfully three times out of four. I constantly get stuck on the menu screen and become completely unable to press anything.
Then there are the annoying, and sometimes game-breaking, bugs: clipping through the map and dying, or even falling underneath the map. This has happened to me on MULTIPLE occasions. This was originally supposed to be a free upgrade for existing owners of ARK: Survival Evolved. They also keep releasing questionable DLCs that end up breaking the game, such as Aquatica. That DLC broke a ton of mods and felt incredibly unpolished. It was so problematic that they made sure players could roll back their game to a version from before Aquatica was released.
The game no longer features official servers either, leaving players to rely on player-hosted servers.
The developers never really fixed many of the game's longstanding bugs or exploits.
Oh, and let's not forget when Snail Games took the money they made from ARK and tried to make a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ electric car with a gaming PC inside it. LMFAOOO.
They also keep releasing slop like Atlas and PixARK. And then there's ARK 2, which we haven't heard much about since its announcement. You guys keep finding ways to ruin what should be your most successful game with some truly baffling decisions.

I honestly did not want to write a negative review for ARK: Survival Evolved. It has been, and still is, one of my favorite survival games ever made. I started playing ARK on my PS4 back in the day, so I have seen how much the game has evolved over the years.
The thing about this game is that it has a FANTASTIC concept: you are dropped into a harsh map or environment and given the freedom to do whatever you want, with the unique gameplay feature of taming dinosaurs to fight alongside you or help you during your adventure. It is an incredible concept, and when ARK works, it is genuinely one of the most fun survival games out there.
The thing that makes me sick about this game, however, is the sheer number of bugs you constantly encounter. For me, they are often game-breaking. I can't even boot up the game successfully three times out of four. I constantly get stuck on the menu screen and become completely unable to press anything.

What should be a fun survival game where you get to tame dinosaurs becomes a slog for one glaring reason—this is the worst optimized game I have ever played, period. Not only is this game potentially hundreds of Gigabytes depending on how many maps you download, but running this game can be a nightmare. You have to jump through so many hoops to even get the game running just alright on a pretty solid system. And once you start factoring in playing on a server with friends, it only gets worse. There is no "if you run into issues" here, it is inevitable, and at that rate just play similar games that play and run better.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

This stupid game takes up over 150 GB and runs like its in early access. Everything in this game makes me angry. The impossible to hit enemies, the horrible tame AI failing to do the simplest task, the lack of guidance to tame any dinosaur, even the inventory is jank. The only SPECK of joy I felt was the character creation, but even that loses its whimsy after a good 2 minutes. During the day the glare is so bad it flashbangs you (and to my knowledge there is no glare setting), and at night it is so dark even with a torch you still can't see. Base lighting is impossible, there has not been a good looking building in ARK history, and the signs and graves are near impossible to read. My friend and I constantly want to play this game, but every single time we try to host/join one another the game freezes, has connection issues, lags, doesn't keep saves, doesn't keep host settings on, and typically has to be opened for like 30 minutes in order for it to function at a basic level. If the ARK deities allow you to play with your friends without troubleshooting for several hours, then totally get the game.
