It's a great mix of dark souls inspired level and gear progression with metroidvania style items that allow you to explore the map in new ways as you find them and survival horror style puzzles that marry well with the already Silent Hill inspired soundtrack and spooky aesthetic.

There's still a few areas that are locked to the old 2.5d sidescroller gameplay, but these also play much better. Overall a good improvement upon an already strong indie title. \n\t\t\t\t\tI cannot recommend this game enough to anyone who likes souls-like games.

-Build variety is HUGE and you can do everything from magic, melee, guns, flamethrowers and so on.

- The story is good, written with good characters, good lore, mystery and payoffs. I loved it the whole way through.

- Don't knock it for Early Access, the developer released a FINISHED game, the Early Access part is simply added features like modifiers to your playthrough, more detailed endings, and other features. You can 'complete' the game without those things.

- This was 100%'d in one run, but it was a joy to do. Difficult challenges, fun quest lines, interesting characters and puzzles, my god how full this game was.

I bought Withering Realms on a whim while waiting from Dragons Dogma 2: Dark Arisen to release, and
I cannot believe that I was considering NOT getting this game because the artstyle 'looked like' I wouldn't like it.

How wrong I was, this is an absolute GEM, it plays like a hidden smash hit from the PS2 era, and it looks like one too.

It doesn't overstay its welcome, it doesn't ask terribly much of you, and every level / unlock you find feels like a small or large step towards growing your character.

Please, if you like Souls-like games, do NOT pass this up, this was absolutely stellar.

I don't give scores usually, but I'd absolutely give Withering Realms from Moonless Formless a no questions asked 8.5/10.

Plenty could be improved, but even without it, this was one of my favorite games this year, hands down.

\n\t\t\t\t\tIt's alright. The transition to a fixed direction perspective camera went well. I really enjoy this series' unique art direction, the music, and the huge bestiary. There are some great moments in this game. The exploration is decent. There are many different weapons and buffs to experiment with.

The combat is not as tight as in the first game. Thankfully, there is a Narrative mode that you can use if you are just sick of banging your head against the wall. It won't work while a certain artifact is active though. The different areas in the game aren't quite as distinctive or imaginative as in the first game. The story, unfortunately, is also just not as good; There are some baffling reveals and left-turns. It also suffers from needing to be explained at the very end by a new NPC, which is the most reliable sign that the story wasn't presented/revealed as well as it could have been...or you wouldn't have needed to explain it! The developer came up with a bespoke numbering system in this game that is pretty neat but they use it for almost every puzzle, which is a real letdown. They are not the only kind of puzzles and I did mostly enjoy the Silent Hill-y dark world puzzles, There are a couple of more novel puzzles but their solutions might frustrate a lot of players.

I consider my experience a net positive but I do hope the game is polished significantly before 1.0. Dev can't change the story or the bosses or the ending (maybe a little), but they can tighten the combat and make some areas more distinct. I am also looking forward to additional content that will surely come later because there is at least one location on the map that isn't explorable yet.\t\t\t\t\t

The game very quickly lets you get souped-up for your build if you so desire with giving you a quick array of weaponry which is always awesome, can't wait to see new stuff later in the game. Really enjoy the world that's been set up so far / been set up.

If you're looking for a good quality action RPG I don't think you can go wrong with this title.

Some things worth mentioning that may sway purchasing decisions.
- Some animations are a lil rough, so if you like seamless animations you may not like it, but i'd still say give it a try, there's soul here and it shows.

- You will get EATEN alive quickly in terms of health, (Now this may just be because of my build so far but owie.) however with the way the healing items work when you run out of HP it will auto use them - I can't tell if I dislike this or I'm happy with this.

\n\t\t\t\t\tThere's a lot to like about Withering Realms. It clearly takes a lot of inspiration from Silent Hill and the Souls series, which are some of my favorite games. It's got an interesting setting and story, an expansive world to explore, a great variety of enemies and builds. There are, however, some downsides that I hope will be changed a little at least in the game's full release:

- The most glaring problem, I think, is the randomized rooms. In small doses, they can be a fun way to mix up gameplay a bit, but they're absolutely everywhere. Most of the map is randomized to some extent, which could work in theory, but the way it's implemented is either A. large open rectangular area with some enemies and points of interest scattered about (these are also randomized and almost all in the form of a chest with a small enemy group around it) or B. randomized maze of functionally identical small rooms filled with enemies that you have to traverse. I really don't understand this design decision. It adds nothing to the game and makes a lot of the encounters and world design feel a bit low-effort and arbitrary (though I will say this is clearly NOT a low-effort game, it's actually quite impressive and I enjoy it for the most part). This becomes even more apparent when juxtaposed with the excellent hand-built areas that are full of interesting scenery, unique encounters, engaging level design and puzzles. The randomized areas suffer so much in comparison that it feels useless to engage with them and honestly I wish it was more viable to run past the enemies in them to just get to the interesting areas.

- Unfortunately I think the enemy encounter design tends to compound the above problem. The game seems like it's leaning towards more of a deliberate combat style like DS1 or DS2, but most of the combat encounters are with groups of fast-moving enemies that constantly attack to the point that it feels almost impossible to avoid taking damage while attacking. Maybe this is a skill issue on my part, but even low-level enemies are quite tanky and take a lot of hits to kill and most of the time there are two to four attacking at once. It makes it difficult to appreciate and engage with the enemies' movesets because there's so much happening onscreen that you can't possibly keep track of what each enemy is doing. There are also surprisingly few tools/moves for crowd control. I'm not a game designer but I do think this game would benefit a lot from more sparing enemy placement, reducing TTK on smaller enemies while increasing the damage that some enemies deal and/or changing the enemy AI so that they attack less frequently or in sequence when multiple enemies are aggroed. Enemies with guns/crossbows are also fairly common and not very fun to fight, as there is often no clear telegraphing of the attack or ways to strategically avoid it.

- Shields seem useless, especially when it you need 10 strength on one arm to get a mere 85% damage reduction with a very slow animation and there isn't a parry, rebound, shield bash, etc. I don't know why you would ever choose to use it instead of simply dodging.

- This is just a minor nitpick but I wish more was done with the light mechanics. One of the first items you receive in the game is a lantern, and there are some areas where it seems worth using (I haven't done much exploring at night because the enemy ganks are incredibly punishing) but supposedly having your light on is supposed to attract more attention from enemies? I've explored quite a lot of the game and never has that factored into my gameplay. enemies largely seem to just aggro within a certain distance whether it's dark or they have line of sight or not. Might have to experiment with it a bit more but so far stealth has not been a factor in gameplay for me, which feels like a bit of a missed opportunity given the survival-horror roots of the game. It would be interesting also if you couldn't lock on in dark environments without a light, making the light a bit more useful.

- There are no consequences for death, which is a bit odd to me. You don't lose anything. As the game is currently, it might be too frustrating for players to lose ichor/money/have some other consequence upon death, but without that death feels very inconsequential. I often let enemies kill me just to get back to a checkpoint faster, and usually it seems that the best strategy is to run into a room full of enemies, spam attack until they're all dead, get the loot, run back to the checkpoint or die, and repeat ad infinitum.

- Things either need to cost more or the player needs to acquire less money. There's no point to having shops if you can just buy everything in them without any effort just from the course of regular gameplay.

I love this game and intend to finish it soon, but I think that these issues are holding it back from a very high potential.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI came into this game after having played the prequel "Withering Rooms" which was a game that completely took me by surprise. Genuinely became one of my favorite games from indie developers and one of my favorite soulslikes. So you can imagine I came to Withering Realms with high expectations right?

Well now imagine that the game still blew my expectations out of the water. It's an amazing game with phenomenal writing, fantastic atmosphere and quite a lot of gameplay variety. I beat my first playthrough fairly quickly (21 hours) simply because I played this game every free moment of my time after it came out. While I don't want to oversell it because the game simply fits my tastes...it was something that occupied my mind for all those days.

Now as of the time of writing, the gameplay balance is "debatable". Since you don't loose any resources upon death (other than rare single use items that you can re-buy or find in droves), losing isn't that big of an issue. Similarly, your character has an array of obscenely powerful items and combinations of armor/talisman/weapons that can make short work of many enemies. But so far this is "balanced" by enemies hitting VERY hard, inflicting statues and coming in groups. Most fights don't have to be repeated so it feels more like an one-time challenge that you can then move past. As such, I found the gameplay to be pretty good if very big on damage numbers on both sides so it's up to you to see if you enjoy it.

The audiovisual layer of the game is simply amazing - it has a distinct, grungy charm that manages to make stuff like ghosts and zombies fairly unique. The horror elements are pretty well executed and I say it as a survival-horror enjoyer. There's at least 70 enemy types in the game plus 22 bosses which means that it solves the issue of enemy variety that a LOT of souls-likes struggle with. The soundtrack is also fantastic, full of incredibly memorable tracks. I think the Fallowlands theme will stick with me for months.

Overall, if this game looks even slightly interesting to you - give it a try! The demo covers the first part of the game that'll give you a feel for the gameplay. Despite the "early access" on the store page, the game is playable from start to finish without any issues - the developer will simply polish it up, add more endings and features as time goes. Withering Realms has definitely became one of my favourite games of 2026 and I'm bound to re-play it sometime soon.\t\t\t\t\t

I literally had to just put it down and promise to not come back to it until 1.0 in hopes it becomes actually fun to play. The combat is just atrocious, I love games like bloodborne and this feels like it wants to be that but it just plays like a janky knockoff. \n\t\t\t\t\tThis game is just really fun and worth playing. I've played a lot of souls-like games that I end up dropping for one reason or another. This one was compact enough for me to get through without it turning into a drawn-out experience. It's still 30+ hours of gameplay so you have plenty of time to grow your character and playstyle.

The sound design was really good. Both the music and the sound everything made was really fun and fitting. It's very impressive on it's own and even more so when you realize it's just two people that made it.

I am a little bit stupid so some of the puzzles gave me trouble but I was able to solve all of them I encountered on my own and I think they were well designed.

The choice to have a ghost girl that controls a physical doll and being able to combine their skills is really interesting. Once you learn that spells can be cast at the same time as anything your doll is doing it opens things up a little more. It's cool to me that Clover and the doll's actions are able to be done at the same time.\t\t\t\t\t

I'll start with what I liked.

The setting, story, and characters are all very weird and interesting. The game takes place in an alternate history WWI Wales where a massive supernatural explosion has halted the war after unleashing magic and monsters upon the world.

The combat is your typical souls-like fair that, while nothing special itself, is done competently enough to make the game play enjoyable if those are the types of games you like.
The soundtrack is really good. It's a mix of eerie, somber, relaxing, and energetic and striking depending on the scene.

The horror elements are paced nicely and integrate really well with souls-like game play but overall I would consider this more of an RPG than an actual horror game.
I'm not the biggest fan of the puzzles but I felt that they did their job and broke up the combat sections without overstaying their welcome. Some did feel a little tedious, however.

Now for what I didn't like.

Fixed camera angles. Yes, I know this is a horror game but it's also a souls-like and I hate enemies attacking me from off screen when I can't even turn to see them. An enemy could fire projectiles that melt your health in seconds without them even being on screen or do a massive lunging leap from off screen like it's a wrestling match.

Exploration and level design. Both are incredibly simplistic as each area is one big square/rectangle room, even the outdoor areas. There is no variation in terrain, aside from water to slow you down, no real alternate paths or hidden areas, and each area is randomly generated to some extent. Dungeons are fully randomly generated like dungeon crawlers. Outdoor areas have the same layouts but change their point of interest locations with each entry. Once you enter an area there is no discovery, no real exploration, everything is laid out and even if you turn off the minimap you can easily and quickly explore everything in short order. I'm not saying that this game should have been a massive open world but everything being randomly generated squares one after the other gets really boring.

Next is how the night stages are handled. You can change the time of day on the world map to night. This changes enemy spawns and allows access to areas that are normally closed off at day. The downsides are that it is so dark during the night in this game. I know how silly that sounds but it's so oppressive that not even the torch or flashlight they game gives you help that much. Couple this with hands randomly popping up and slowing you down as you move, this makes traversing the night extremely tedious especially when hunting for specific items that can only be found after dark. I've heard they are planning on adjusting this but until then it's borderline painful to play.

Lastly and worst of all is the performance. This game says it recommends a GPU equivalent to a 1070 but the game performs terribly even on hardware that far surpasses it. The only way to maybe get stable frames is to enable FSR which leads me to believe that the game is not well optimized at all. Again, the game is still in early access so I hope this will get fixed down the road.

Despite the flaws this game is something special and I think, even at its current EA state, it's well worth the price. The game is playable from start to finish yet is rough around the edges i terms of side content and the endings aren't completely fleshed out, only a few lines of dialogue being different between them. I'm confident this game will receive more polish as time goes on and I look forward to seeing what the devs come up with.\t\t\t\t\t

There are some things I have mixed feelings about, mostly related to how much of the original game was thrown out and replaced with generic mechanics. Take magic builds, for example.

In Withering Rooms, using magic meant stocking up on supplies and creating scrolls and warding candles so you could cast spells and manage your curse meter. It was tedious but also gave it depth and you got the satisfaction of deleting enemies in a single hit from a curse orb because you knew that you had invested a lot in being able to cast it. In Withering Realms, magic attacks are much weaker and cost you nothing but portions of your stamina/magic pool, which recovers automatically. Spamming a magic attack effortlessly takes away a lot of the... magic. Using guns has also become simpler without any ammo requirements. Some people may prefer this, but I can't say I'm one. There are some other issues, such as lack of content, but that is expected from an early access game.

On the positive side, the game still carries the same incredible atmosphere you only find from solo developers or very small and passionate studios. Moonless Formless has a distinct style blending absolute horror with lightheartedness and humor that I haven't seen anywhere else. Gorgeous soundtrack. The combat and boss fights have been improved massively and the doll has lots of customization options leading to a variety of builds. The weapons are much better than the first game, with some really fun ones hidden around (Spectral Blade is amazing.) And the ghost girl, Clover, is of course adorable. With more content and a few balance changes, I think it'll end up a really solid game.

At the end of the day, I prefer Withering Rooms over this game, but that doesn't mean it's bad. It's better than a lot of AAA games out there right now. The fact that a solo dev created something like this blows my mind, and buying the game just to support their work is worth it on its own. If you're on the fence about buying it, try the first game first and then give this one a shot if you enjoyed it.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tAbsolutely amazing game. I never played Withering Rooms but I watched people play and it looked really cool but it didn't seem like my thing. The jump from Withering Rooms to Withering Realms reminds me of the jump from Risk of Rain 1 to RoR2. RoR1 was also a great game, but not for me, while ROR2 is a game much more suited for me because of the jump to 3D.

The combat and exploration is great. The enemies I've faced so far have been challenging but fair. I've been playing on strict difficulty which just makes it so you lose level progress if you die to make it more punishing, and it's felt fair to me. The story and characters and environments are all so interesting, and the customizability is awesome. There's just so much to discover.

Visually I love how this game looks but not how it runs. By far the biggest thing that needs to be improved is the optimization. My framerate is in the 20's on low settings at baseline and while I can live with that there's no reason this game should be running like that for what it is, my specs are well beyond the recommended listed on this page.

Overall I would absolutely recommend this game, just be wary that the optimization is a bit rough right now.\t\t\t\t\t
