This format of a randomly generated campaign allows for fresh challenges on every playthrough, as you cannot stack your army how you wish or take turns to recuperate; ensuring the player has to be careful with their units and the decisions made on the campaign map.
While I do love the format of this game, the battles are somewhat mixed. They're simple, arcady and quite repetitive. The one key factor here is they lack much tactical depth or planning. As a veteran of Total War, I love my units to have a lot of play to them, or or tactically how I setup my army if I'm at a disadvantage. But here the gameplay is so simple, that while it does matter, the battles are a bit too fast paced and lacking real depth. For example, ranged units are not impactful in the way you imagine. Yes they damage enemy units, but their is a lacking when it comes to the physicality.

Are there balancing issues? Yes. Does one of the factions (the silly Sanguine Court) probably need a buff in just about every vector? Yes. Is there only one gamedev tirelessly working to build this game? YES. TT has its issues, but the game is also just so fun to play.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tDecided to pick this game up after seeing Kleaper have a go at it. I have to say, for a single-developer effort, I'm pretty happy with how it's been playing so far. The AI, at least at the first couple difficulty levels, is relatively simple to play around - that being said, they do have numbers on you, so it really does come down to how you deploy your units. Using cavalry to catch artillery and archers on the flanks, using your own artillery to bring down stronghold gates, and so on. The units each have their individual strengths and weaknesses, but I will admit that I'm looking forward to the spellcasting update giving each faction even more unique gameplay.
So far, I feel the price tag might be a little high at this time, but once more updates roll out I feel like it'll grow well into it. If you like to support indie development, I'd definitely say give this one a shot - even if it's rough around the edges, the effort the dev puts in shines through.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The combat is akin to any total war game in the broad strokes but very different in the minutia. Your army size is very limited so you'll need to pick and choose your units carefully. There is no drowning your opponent in cheap units, so elite units and careful positioning is the name of the game. Every choice matters and leads to interesting builds.
As a note to historical total war fans: this isn't it. This is not a "every unit has 1 hit point" kind of game, I've been able to win battles where a prolonged combat cost me a single digit worth of individual models. This is very much a board game style tactics game rather than a wargame style one. While there is morale in the game, it rarely matters for your forces unless you have seriously screwed up.
The AI is fairly braindead on a tactical level, almost always just charging you directly and relying on just pure stats smashing into your forces. It does force you to use some tactics but it really isn't difficult to quickly break them most of the time.
The majority of the game's fun lies in finding a way to craft the most broken combination of units you can and seeing how far you can run with it. There's enough variety to keep it worth the $20 price point, with plenty of characters to pick from that give you buffs to adjust your playstyle and rewards given from making a unit to max level it's an enjoyable enough game to pick up and whittle away some time with. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tTabletop Tavern is a very fun strategy game but I do have a couple complaints. First of all this is in regards to the gear I think the system overall is designed fine but when I am playing most of the gear is a simple state boost of a really simple gimmick with healing or getting more gold. I think that adding more horizontal progression would have made me more excited to engage with this system. A couple examples could be allow monstrous units to charge into cities breaking down the gate or artillery shoot burning projectiles; these would make players excited to engage with a new mechanic later on into the game. This brings me to my second point: the upgrades you can buy with renown none of them add anything new mechanically and none of them really got me excited to unlock. The majority of the upgrades give a tiny numerical advantage. Adding more depth to the upgrades can help keep later runs more exciting. Also the game has a system where you can customize your build choosing starting gear and troops it might to a good idea to also add the ability to pick different buffs and debuffs like for example if you want more of a archers build you can increase the amount of ranged cards you find but decrease the amount of everything else or another one could be artillery gain damage the closer they are to their target but at max range they do less then there normal damage you could also have these as gear effects. Things like this can make people more excited to try different strategies.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
