\n\t\t\t\t\tI purchased this game around a week or so after it was released, having read a lot of reviews I thought it seemed like a worthwhile purchase. However, one topic that came up time and time again was the story being hard to follow, pacing issues, or just generally bad overall, I personally quite enjoyed the first hour, yet it felt incomplete, NPCs talking to you and the main character staying completely silent, it seemed very disjointed. After another couple of hours, I tried to enjoy the game but I just couldnt, the mostly silent protagonist bugged me, the story seemed to be leading you here there and everywhere but not explaining why you are going there or any information on why its important to you. The world and the mechanics however i truly enjoyed and its what kept me returning to try it again and again.

Today, i jumped back on after hearing of the latest major update 2.0. It apparently added bits to the story, so i played it, from the beginning. What were they thinking? the sections of the story where you would expect the character to speak but he always remained silent, he now talks, the reasons for him doing certain things or going to specific areas, now have cutscenes giving a glimpse to that reason, its so much better and finally i feel like i will enjoy this game without worry, Kliff has more of a personality and considering how great the voice actor is, its good to see his talent on show finally. It seemed like such a waste of potential. Anyways this is my first review but i thought it needed to be said, i may update it down the line if anything changes for better or worse, but thank you team for the 2.0. It now feels complete and im only an hour or so in. Look forward to the rest.

Crimson Desert Enhanced is one of those games that tries to do almost everything โ€” massive open world, cinematic story, brutal combat, exploration, mounts, huge battles, side activities, boss fights, progression systems, and an almost ridiculous amount of content.

The Enhanced update made the game noticeably better, especially when it comes to the story and overall flow.

Combat is easily one of the strongest parts of the game. Most importantly cater to all types of gamers.

Crimson Desert has bosses, but the entire game is NOT a nonstop boss parade and made for streamers garbage and watch to play garbage. Game built for almost all kinds of players. Even if its rated little low on steam just ignore them. This game content alone is worth the money spent.

There is a gigantic world, quests, towns, exploration, battles, NPCs and side content between major fights.

If you like a **power-fantasy action RPG** more than repeatedly dying to bosses for hours, Crimson Desert is far more enjoyable. Mostly importantly boss fights are cinematic and epic.

Crimson Desert Enhanced isn't perfect.

It's messy.

It's enormous.

It's occasionally confusing.

It has more gameplay systems than some entire game franchises.

But underneath all of that is a **beautiful, ambitious, incredibly fun open-world action RPG** with excellent combat and an insane amount of content.

If you enjoy games like **The Witcher 3, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Horizon, Skyrim or other massive third-person adventures**, there's a lot to love here.

Just don't try to finish everything.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI wanted to like this game, but I fell off after 30 hours. I had heard that the exploration was incredible, but I did not find that to be the case. Instead I would wander around and occasionally found a small alcove behind a waterfall with a treasure chest in it, or a short janky puzzle that was straight forward to figure out, but a pain in the butt to execute, or a combat area, which means enemies spawn continuously as you mindlessly take them down until the progress bar goes all the way down and then you're done, or worst of all, something that seems like it might be interesting but turns out you can't interact with it until you progress the main quest.

I haven't found a single dungeon to delve into which is wild for an open world RPG. I absolutely hate the way combat encounters work. The progress bar that you have to get down to zero while you dispatch enemies is just garbage lazy game design. Encounters are not a designed challenge to figure out, they're just mindless button mashing until the game decides you're done.

I have been going around Reddit and asking people defending this game to tell me what I'm missing. Just a single specific story of something that happened while they were out exploring the world that made them think that this game was awesome, and I have yet to get a single answer. If you asked me that question about Elden Ring, you wouldn't be able to shut me up, and yet for some reason the fans of this game are super reticent to talk about what makes it great.

But no, maybe in the future they will fix this game, but for the sake of the peace of my roommate and my own sanity I will stop yelling at my computer and simply uninstall it. For every cool idea you think you are going to enjoy there are plenty baffling design choices the developer took that are just going to make you question "WHY?!". Its a great idea, and I played so far because it felt like the game kept hinting at something grand if I just stick a little longer. But every "reward" comes with a quirk that makes it non enjoyable. Its death by a thousand cuts.
Badly written story and nonsensical progression, just follow the X on the map because the game says so.
Gear is mostly cosmetic making loot unrewarding.
Some desirable mounts that lock themselves on cooldown timers.
Controls often clash against each other, specially the ones that ask for two buttons at the same time, seem to have no frame allowance so you will have to move both fingers at the exact same millisecond.
Every single trick in the book to make the play time artificially longer, often in inconsistent ways. like making you walk back and forward between two distant locations between quests, locking certain quest givers so you have to come back another time, forcing you to follow npcs around to random locations that have nothing to do with the quest, to not letting you loot something you can clearly see in a boss fight and instead of being consistent and making you walk everywhere from location, like they always do, cutscene and force teleport because wink wink we want you to walk all the way back here.
Some puzzles are easily solvable at glance but won't progress unless you follow a specific quest even if you have the necessary abilities. Some puzzles are easy to understand but then ask for a near pixel perfect alignment to consider themselves solved and the camera won't help you.
Inconsistent crime mechanics. What exactly is considered a crime? can be quite random. You might take out your sword in anger and wreck an inn and no one would bat an eye, but fail to stop pressing the move button a mile from some objects will cause immediate crimes.
I have fallen through the terrain because a tree decided to start falling near me, not on me, just near me.
Voice dialogue and text sometimes don't match, using different names for places, factions and people.
There seem to be some kind of memory leak, as I notice that the longer I am playing the game, nothing lags, frames per second are ok, but the character starts taking longer and longer times to react and grab objects.

Yeah the game is beautiful, unless you look to close at things and characters or find yourself in a foggy or dark situation then things look terrible. It is a marvel that they made so much game, but seriously, this game is just rage baiting you from the start and I can't recommend it.

If you want to get it, at least get it on sale, $70 for a game in this state should be taken as an insult to its own community. But the community seems to love it so I guess... I'm wrong? or did we get completely different games?

I enjoyed every single moment I spent in this game. I absolutely hate puzzles, but Crimson Desert is so beautiful and enjoyable that I can easily ignore that.
I really love open-world games that give you a lot of things to do, and I'm very happy that Crimson Desert gives players so much freedom. You can explore, fight, complete different activities, and just enjoy the world however you want.
The only thing I wish this masterpiece had was romance. Apparently, romance might be added in an expansion, and if that really happens, this game will be almost perfect for me.

\n\t\t\t\t\tYea not sorry but HATE on this is FORCED. When was the last time we got such an open world game where developers listen to the people and patch accordingly? The only one i can think of is Larian Studios.

The best way to describe this game would be it's immersion, exploration, and adaptability. The scenery, towns, environments are alive and respond. The explorer is awarded rather than the one who sticks to the story. The map is absolutely massive and fast traveling takes no less than 3-7 seconds (and this is playing at max specs). Adaptability since the game is explore heavy, you WILL run into enemies you are not prepared for. You need to be combat ready and have health items handy.

The mechanics are meticulous on mouse and keyboard but somehow they made it work with an xbox controller as well. This is easily one of the games that mostly satisfies the story driven players, but over achieves with their "Explore first, story later" players.

This game is for the explorers and adventurists mostly.

I run into reviews on IG of people bashing the game, the only reason why is because todays people are SO heavily addicted to "cheap dopamine hits" via reels. Their attention spans are TRASH. So its really no surprise they do not like this particular game.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI wanted to like this, especially with all the misleading trailers, the streamer hype, and the recent "Enhanced Edition" release, but after 8 hours, I can safely say this game is a massive let down. Unfortunately, I'm past the refund window, so consider this an expensive warning. The game suffers from a severe identity crisis, trying to mimic Red Dead Redemption's open world, Dynasty Warriorsโ€™ combat system, Elden Ring's boss design, Skyrimโ€™s dialogue, and puzzle games all at once and failing at virtually every single one of them. From grabbing items and interacting with NPCs to basic movement and combat flow, the controls feel horrible, gimmicky, and painful to use from start to finish.

In addition, normal difficulty is way too easy, and bumping it up to hard doesn't fix the core issue because you can essentially mash a single button to effortlessly wipe out entire groups of enemies. Regular combat is a total snooze, but bosses are harder but gimmicky, the game is relying on cheap difficulty by either forcing you to use a hyper-specific skill or spamming endless unblockable attacks. Meanwhile, the open world looks great visually, but it is one inch deep and completely lifeless. NPCs wander around with repetitive dialogue, and whenever exploration leads you to a unique landmark, you quickly realize it has zero real significance.

The marketing team deserves a massive raise for getting top streamers and channels on board to sell this illusion, because as a game, it tries to be everything, masters nothing, and leaves you with a hollow experience. Save your money.\t\t\t\t\t

-the game is basically 33% puzzles (that you will be looking up most of the time because they dont give hints at all)

-33% main story/side quest cutscenes which aren't boring but also aren't engaging. just mid. although you can fast forward them i still found most of them tedious

-the other 33% was gameplay, which was the only great part of this game.

that said, im 30 hours in and still havent completed my campsite. which means im still in the tutorial phase i suppose. its quite a long one. and although i prefer grindy games, after deciding to stop playing it, i felt a huge sigh of relief. almost as if im free from doing homework. Maybe im stopping right before it gets good, but i don't want to play another couple of hundred hours of skipping cutscenes, youtubing endless puzzles just to unlock another mechanic for a puzzle or a new combat ability to take out an enemy. \n\t\t\t\t\tThe worst "best game" I've played, is the summarizing statement I can make for it.

The world is amazing, it's beautiful, the armour, the weapon designs, the skills, the exploration, it's all one of the most enjoyable experiences I've ever had. When you're just going one way to look at something because you saw it peeking in the distance, it gives you a sense of exploration that I haven't really felt as compelled to see through in other games I've played. Having even your slightest bit of intuition rewarded with a secret item, because you remembered something from an encounter- it feels rewarding, and genuinely manages to give you the determination to keep seeking things like that out.

Until it doesn't.

Crimson Desert has a problem with putting itself forward as THE game that you're looking for, while taking away so much player choice, that it reaches points of absurdity. You would think that the mystery is amazing, that you not looking anything up is essential, that you as the player should ask questions, and not your character. But you should, and so should Kliff. From the first mission, for me, there's a jarring sense of disconnect from the character. When I stared playing, I told myself I would not skip any cutscenes, that I'd pay attention and try to learn the world the way I'd want to learn the world of any game I buy. I don't know how bad the previous edition was, I started with Enhanced.

But something about the story just isn't it. It drags in places it doesn't need to, it skips the parts you feel like you the player should have. It pans out quests by a dozen extra steps for something you won't remember, for a character you won't revisit except for maybe a cutscene hours and hours further down the line. Maybe I'm just bad at reading the room, but I didn't find it in me to care about the Graymanes from the beginning, instead, I only started coming around to it much later on into the game. If anything, I enjoyed it *more* when I was so far separated from that plotline, just playing as a knight in a cool new, awesome fantasy world with a lot of hack n' slash and exploring. I just enjoyed walking through Hernand. But the moment I did the story, something made it feel outright boring to play.

I wasn't learning anything. Kliff, the character you play as, and will be *forced* to play as if you want to progress anywhere, isn't asking the questions you want answered. He's told something absurd, and he either grunts, says one word, or says nothing. He's their attempt at a silent protagonist, who's just vocal enough to make all the decisions that leave you in the blue, or leave you doing something you genuinely don't want to do. You don't have a "player choice", which is fine, you don't need to always have a story where you decide every outcome for. But it's the extra stuff that feels like a slight, it's him always picking the option that makes you feel like you're genuinely wasting time, it's him always drawing out dialogue when he would otherwise never say a thing, just to make your horse ride from point A to B take 4 extra minutes so you can buy three hide and fast travel back.

You are stuck as Kliff. Around the early game chapters, you'll unlock a secondary character. They introduce you to her just out of the blue, showing her in perhaps one or so cutscenes awhile prior to you receiving her. And after being stuck as Kliff so long, getting the chance to play as her, alternatively, feels amazing. It's a breath of fresh air when the constant string of "Graymane" starts to enter a state of tedium. You play as her for maybe a few hours, or maybe hardly at all, because there's no way you get to progress the story with her. No, worse than that, after you progress maybe an hour worth of missions, they take her away from you again for the next *several* chapters. It's not player choice, it's what the game decides your choice is, and you have no warning or option to just undo it. If you like her? Too bad, go into the end game. You thought she was great? Awesome, have fun progressing the next 40 hours of missions as just Kliff and an Oongka mission thrown in there.

And returning to one of the previous points- never wanting to ask questions, to look anything up, to explore and see the world for yourself- you are penalized for it. You aren't just penalized for it, you are softlocked out of some things because of it. If not softlocked, you have to endure the absurd game restrictions that I'll mention later. My ultimate caving and decision to finally post a painfully negative review, is just one armour set. All I wanted was an armour set for Damiane, the second character you unlock, and I will clarify- avoided looking anything up for the longest time. Only to find out, first, that one of the characters I needed for a piece, has vanished from the entire map, and will only appear at a later chapter. I proceeded through all of the story to get there, repeating missions I didn't want to repeat, continuing quests I didn't feel like continuing, because I just wanted to enhance my single player, free roaming experience. After another stacked on 10 hours of open worlding mixed with quests, I get the chest piece.

Only to discover that during all of that, I completely passed a previously essential NPC that would give me another one of the pieces, the gauntlets. And they're gone. Just gone. Disappears, bugged, despawned, something, but they are gone. I don't have the desire to find a save that goes that far back, I don't have the will to undo everything I'd spent the last few days of my time doing. I'm not going to go all the way back to a point where I hardly remember where I was, just because I gave the game grace in assuming that me progressing with its story wouldn't bite me in the back as constantly as it does. It never feels like you're winning as you go through the story. It only feels like you're progressing, because the game left you in a spot so uncomfortable, that you're just desperately seeking the next relief checkpoint- only to find out, after you got there, you're even more uncomfortable than you were on the way there. You just lose. You'll ignore a skill, you'll miss an NPC, you'll ride past something and forget it. You'll clear a place, assuming that's it, just to find out there's a secret giga-hidden wall door that has a piece of armour you've been looking for relentlessly.

And the game itself practically ensures that you won't have any ease getting there. You find out something late, and you need to pass time? You can only rest or wait for a maximum of 12 hours, and then you're barred for however long the game feels like; typically until you forget about it, and remember it several real life hours later, and try it again. Rinse and repeat. A single player game barring you from your own waiting timers is, in my opinion, ridiculous. But fine, you can't sleep away a day to merchant farm- so much for that freedom. What about the rest? Dragons, there's dragons, those are cool- for 15 minutes. You get them for maybe 15 minutes, after spending however long it takes you to get there, you get to ride a dragon for all of 15 minutes before it goes on a cool down of 50. Just.. Because? It's not like it took you forever to get there, or anything. Not like you already had to fight the game's uphill systems for a ridiculous amount of time just to get there, just to be barred out of another time constraint. Those aren't in game minutes, by the way. You have to wait a full, real, 50 minutes to use the dragon, even if a cutscene uses it FOR you.

I have so much more to say, so much more I can think of, but I'm reaching the limit. The game gives you a lot to work with, and takes a lot of quality of life away in the process. It will force you to wait. To sit, just 'cuz. It will take away things you thought you had, just because it wants you down the path it feels you need to go. Going in blind is the worst thing you can do. I love this game. I hate it as much, too.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tCrimson Desert has genuinely become one of the most impressive games Iโ€™ve ever played. The story is great, but what surprises me the most is just how complex and detailed the game is. The longer I play, the more things I discover, and I honestly donโ€™t understand why some people donโ€™t like a game this good.

The way the story is presented is also incredibly detailed. It doesnโ€™t only focus on the major events, but also includes a lot of small details that make the world feel alive and like it has its own rules. One example is the faction system. To earn the trust of each faction, you canโ€™t simply complete a few quests and immediately become someone they trust. There is an actual process and various activities that make your relationship with them feel more natural and meaningful.

What I love the most, however, is the combat system. There are so many combos in this game that sometimes I genuinely forget which buttons Iโ€™m supposed to press to complete a certain combo or command. The combat system is extremely complex, but thatโ€™s exactly what makes it so fun to learn. You canโ€™t just rely on one or two attacks. You have to understand the combos, timing, and choose the most effective combination of attacks depending on the enemy youโ€™re fighting.

And itโ€™s not just about attacking and rolling to avoid damage like in many other games. Here, you have much more freedom in how you approach combat. You can choose whatever weapon suits your personal playstyle, and each weapon has its own combos and unique ways of being used. Even fighting unarmed has a surprisingly large variety of attacks and combos to learn.

Thatโ€™s what gives the combat so much depth, in my opinion. The more you understand the system, the more possibilities you unlock during combat. Itโ€™s not simply about having the highest damage; itโ€™s about knowing how to properly use your abilities, combos, weapons, and timing.

And when it comes to the graphics, thereโ€™s honestly nothing to complain about. Every corner of this game feels worth taking a screenshot of because it looks that good. From the landscapes, cities, and buildings to the characters and tiny environmental details, everything looks incredible. Even when Iโ€™m not doing anything, I often find myself stopping just to admire the scenery and take screenshots because almost every location feels like it could be a wallpaper.

Iโ€™m also the kind of person who doesnโ€™t like spending a lot of money on a game that Iโ€™ll only play for a short time. I donโ€™t really enjoy games that feel completely finished once you beat the story and eventually become boring because thereโ€™s nothing left to do. Crimson Desert is exactly the kind of game that suits me.

There are so many things to do. Besides the main story, there are various quests, factions, exploration, activities, combat, a deep combat system that you can keep learning and mastering, and many other things that make the game feel like it wonโ€™t get boring anytime soon. Even after I understand one part of the game, there are still so many other things that make me curious enough to keep playing.

Iโ€™ve only played for a few hours so far, but even at this point, I already feel that the money I spent was worth it. This is the kind of game that, in my opinion, isnโ€™t meant to be bought just to finish it, but to play for a long time. The more I play, the more details I discover, and that only makes me more convinced that Crimson Desert is a game that suits me perfectly.\t\t\t\t\t

Crimson Desert looks stunning and offers a massive world to explore, but the underlying gameplay loop completely falls apart. You spend hours tackling puzzles and difficult bosses, but for what? An artifact and gear that changes virtually nothing about how you play.

The weapon system is an absolute disappointment. Every weapon in a category shares the exact same attack motions, combos, and skillsโ€”they are effectively just cosmetic reskins with minor stat tweaks. Slapping "Abyss gear" on standard weapons makes them identical in practice.

While the developers may have tried to iron out the story, the core gameplay is the real problem. Without unique movesets, weapon-specific skills, or meaningful rewards from puzzles beyond a basic skill point, there is zero incentive to keep playing. **Graphics: 9/10**
Beautiful game. The world, landscapes, cities, armor, effects and overall presentation are excellent. This is what I expect from a modern AAA game.
**Characters: 5/10**
Functional, but not memorable. I never developed a strong emotional connection to most of them. There is nothing fundamentally wrong here, but compared to games with truly great characters, this is average.
**Story: 5/10**
The story gives you a reason to move through the world, but it was never the reason I kept playing. Too many characters and events failed to make me care.
**Combat: 9/10**
This is where Crimson Desert shines.
The combat system gives you a huge number of tools and actually lets you combine them creatively. Sword and shield became my favorite setup: blocking, Turning Slash, Force Palm, Shadow Claw, Grounding and the different follow-up attacks create an excellent combat flow.
Later I added ranged options and infinite explosive arrows. The important part is that the game gives you systems and lets you discover how to abuse them.
Unfortunately, that is also its biggest combat problem.
**Build System: 9/10**
Excellent.
There are meaningful choices in skills, artifacts, stats, food, weapons and utility. I changed my build several times as I understood the systems better.
And unlike many RPGs, I actually felt that *I* had created my build instead of simply following an obvious upgrade path.
Attack, crit, attack speed, defense, stagger, interrupts, healing, food and artifacts all interact in interesting ways.
**Game Design: 6/10**
There are some brilliant ideas here, but also some very strange decisions.
The game gives the player extremely powerful mechanics without designing the bosses around them. Permanent blocking is too strong. Force Palm can interrupt major boss mechanics. Healing and revives are abundant. Food can make you absurdly powerful.
Once I understood the systems, most bosses became trivial. I beat many of them on the first try.
The solution should not be bigger health bars or more damage. Bosses need mechanics that challenge the systems the player has built.
Then there are the puzzles.
Far too many of them are not really puzzles. They are searches for something the game has given you insufficient information to find. I eventually stopped pretending this was interesting and used YouTube.
Some of the best equipment also just sits in random caves instead of being connected to meaningful challenges. That makes exploration less satisfying than it should be.
On the positive side, discoveries like permanent flight with the wyvern or utility items that fundamentally change exploration are fantastic. More games should reward curiosity like this.
**Gameplay: 8/10**
I kept playing because the basic loop is fun.
Exploration, combat, progression and discovering increasingly ridiculous ways to solve problems kept me interested for a long time.
The game also deserves credit for something increasingly rare: it simply worked. I had very few technical problems.
But there is too much filler, too much searching and too many repetitive puzzles between the good parts.
**Overall: 8/10**
Crimson Desert has desing flaws, and is far too easy once you understand its systems.
But those systems are exactly why I enjoyed it.
The game gave me enough freedom to find my own solutions, break its encounters, change my build and experiment.
I can criticize a game for hours and still think it is good.
Crimson Desert is one of those games.

The original story wasnโ€™t bad, but the main cast felt hollow, especially the protagonist, who played like a blank slate. Enhanced fixes that at a structural level โ€” his internal struggles are actually shown now, and his restraint finally means something because youโ€™ve seen what heโ€™s restraining. His allies also show up throughout the whole campaign now instead of a couple of isolated missions โ€” it feels like a found family, not strangers who occasionally show up to fight.

Thereโ€™s a chapter roughly two-thirds in that delivers some of the best narrative escalation Iโ€™ve seen in an open-world action game โ€” no spoilers, but it recontextualizes the whole premise in a way that hit way harder than I expected.

Not every character is equally served yet, but the ambition here moved Pearl Abyss way up my list of favorite studios. This is what a great post-launch overhaul should look like โ€” not just bug fixes, but developers proving they can write a story worth caring about when given the time.

I originally intended to wait until I finished the game before writing this review. That seemed like the sensible thing to do. But the more I played, the more that idea began to feel almost absurd. Crimson Desert is simply too enormous, too dense, and too full of things to discover for completion to be the only measure of whether I've experienced enough to have something meaningful to say about it. I'm playing at a snail's pace deliberately.
Reason? -- I don't want to rush through Pywel. And that, more than anything, probably explains why I'm currently at 600 hours on the clock with this one.

"An MMO That Became Something Else"

There is an argument that Crimson Desert feels like a converted MMO masquerading as a single-player RPG. Whether that's an accurate description of its development history or simply a useful way of describing its DNA,
I don't particularly care anymore. Because whatever process produced it, the end result is extraordinary. Pywel is one of the best open worlds I've experienced. The world has been built on a scale that makes the usual --โ€œI've seen everythingโ€ feeling almost impossible to achieve.
You can spend hundreds of hours exploring, fighting, collecting, experimenting, and simply wandering around, and I suspect there will still be things you never encounter. That sense of possibility is one of Crimson Desert's greatest strengths.

Pearl Abyss built the game using its BlackSpace engine, and whatever else one may think about the technology behind it, the results speak for themselves. The game has had its technical problems. At launch, pop-in and texture issues were considerably more noticeable, and even now they haven't disappeared entirely. But many of the issues that initially bothered me have already been addressed, and the difference between launch and the game today is significant.

You look at this world... there are red and orange deserts, snow-covered mountains, dense forests, vast valleys, and green landscapes stretching toward distant horizons. The draw distance is frequently spectacular here; you can stand somewhere high above the landscape and just simply stare. It is a constant feast for the eyes.

Also, there will be moments when you'll find yourself thinking about a vista from a mountaintop long after you've left it. You'll celebrate a brutal boss fight. You'll spend an unreasonable amount of time learning some new system that you absolutely didn't need to learn. And you'll still be discovering things dozens of hours after you thought you had a handle on the game. The barrier to entry is high. There is a lot to learn, a lot to understand, and a lot that the game expects you to figure out rather than simply handing to you.
Once you settle in, though, systems will begin to click, and the reward is enormous. There is always something else. Another place. Another fight. Another system. Another strange little discovery. Another reason to say, โ€œI'll just play for an hour.โ€ And then look at the clock four hours later.

One of my biggest frustrations when I began playing was inventory space. Pearl Abyss listened. Then they patched it. Then they patched it again. And again. Some of the problems that bothered me at launch have already been addressed, while other systems have continued to evolve based on community feedback.

The frequency with which they've been pushing updates has been genuinely concerning as much as it is surprising. Do the staff actually ever leave their offices, go home? like... They're still delivering patches at an almost alarming pace, and with the next DLC, "Charting the Unknown," scheduled for October 15, 2026, it doesn't feel like they're treating the game as a finished product that has simply been shipped and abandoned.
That kinda behavior builds trust.

All in all, yes, I also have got grievances. Crimson Desert isn't flawless.
It has technical issues. It can be overwhelming. Some systems could have been explained better (earlier). The sheer amount of content can occasionally feel intimidating for some, but it never overloaded me! Throughout my journey so far, not gonna lie, I have become frustrated with the game.

I can criticize something I've just experienced. I can spend twenty minutes wondering why Pearl Abyss designed something the way they did. And then something happens. I discover something. I beat something. I see something. I learn something. And suddenly, the frustration is gone. The joy of playing simply overtakes it all. That's an incredibly difficult thing for a game to accomplish, and I'm not even close to finishing this even after 600 hours.
I simply do NOT feel like I'm done with it.
What I do feel, however, is curious, almost every time. It is a giant driving factor and is an incredibly powerful thing for an open-world game to give its players.

Finally, I definitely have to address the following.
Crimson Desert isn't for everyone. I don't think it ever will be. And you don't need to convince people. Play it. Don't play it. The choice will always be yours, the same way perspectives work with questionsโ€”> How deep do you want to go?

Who the hell are all these people? They get killed at the start of the game, then they come back? I don't get it...Everything is super super slow and stretched out. This is a game that tries to do EVERYTHING โ€” and sometimes it actually pulls it off.

First of all, the game looks absolutely incredible. Pywel can be breathtaking, and there have been plenty of times where I've simply stopped what I was doing to look at the scenery. The scale, environments, cities and landscapes can be seriously impressive.

The combat is also one of the strongest parts of the game. There are so many different attacks, combos and ways to fight that even after spending a huge amount of time with the game, combat can still be fun.

And the boss fights are incredible. Honestly, some of the best I've played. The bosses where you're forced to use dragons? Those suck. But other than that, the boss fights are easily one of the highlights of the game.

The world is huge and filled with NPCs, yet somehow it can still feel strangely empty at times. There are so many interesting-looking places that make you think "there has to be something here" โ€” only to discover that there really isn't much to do.

I'm also very mixed on the main story. There are parts I really enjoy, but sometimes I completely lose track of what's happening and just sit there with a giant question mark over my head.

And then there's the name...

Crimson Desert really should have been called Pywel.

Ironically, the Crimson Desert itself is probably the least interesting region in the entire game. The actual playable desert isn't even that big compared to the rest of the map.

And this leads to one of the most frustrating things about exploration: the invisible boundaries.

You can stand in the desert and clearly see huge stretches of land, buildings, towers, fortresses and other locations in the distance. They don't look like some blurry background decoration. They look like places you should actually be able to explore.

So naturally, you ride towards them.

Then suddenly the game tells you that you're leaving the playable area and forces you to turn around.

That's incredibly disappointing in an open-world game built around exploration. If an area isn't supposed to be accessible, don't fill the horizon with interesting locations that look like they're waiting to be discovered.

And for a game literally called Crimson Desert, I expected the desert to be one of the biggest and most important parts of the world. Instead, it feels almost forgotten.

I have over 200 hours in this game, and I've genuinely had a great time with it. But that's also why its problems frustrate me so much. There are so many systems where I keep thinking: Why didn't they take this one step further?

Trading is a perfect example. You have all these professions where you can send people out to work for you, but I can't have a horse-drawn wagon trading and earning money for me? Instead, I have to do all the trading myself.

It's one of many strange design decisions that make me wonder why they built these big systems but stopped just before making them truly interesting.

Quests are another example.

The game will sometimes give you a riddle that you're supposed to solve to figure out where to go... and then it marks the exact location on your map.

What's the point of the riddle then?

A much better solution would have been to mark a large search area on the map instead of the exact location. Give me a circle showing the general area, then let me use the riddle, clues and environment to actually find what I'm looking for.

That way the game could still help players who don't want to wander around the entire world, without completely solving the riddle for them.

Give me a direction. Give me clues. Just don't give me the answer.

This is where Crimson Desert frustrates me the most. It gives you this massive, beautiful world that should be perfect for exploration and discovery, but then it often holds your hand through the actual exploration.

There is an incredible game in here.

When it's good, it's REALLY good. The combat is great, the bosses can be fantastic, the world is beautiful, and I wouldn't have spent over 200 hours in Pywel if I wasn't enjoying myself.

But so many mechanics and design decisions feel like they stopped one step before becoming something truly great.

The developers are still updating the game and listening to player feedback, so I absolutely believe this could become a game I recommend in the future.

But after 200+ hours, I have to review the game that exists today โ€” not the game I hope it becomes.
