After 368 hours and 100% completion, I can say Crimson Desert met my expectations. While I found the story disappointing, almost everything else kept me engaged from beginning to end.

The combat stayed enjoyable for most of my playtime, although after nearly 400 hours it naturally became repetitive. It's simple and satisfying, but I wish there were more combos or mechanics that encouraged learning the combat system beyond the basics, the easy difficulty doesn't help me change my style.

Exploration is where the game really shines. The world is beautiful, every region feels distinct, and I was constantly rewarded for wandering off the beaten path. Finding hidden caverns, ruins, unique armor pieces, or special weapons regularly surprised me. The puzzles were fun too, although after the first 20 or so they started reusing the same mechanics.

The biggest weakness is the story. Too many important events happen with little explanation, leaving me wondering why things were happening instead of feeling invested. Another odd choice is that side quests are fully voiced, while Cliff often stays silent even when NPCs ask him direct questions. It made conversations feel awkward.

Side quests were hit or miss. I barely remember most of them, but the infiltration missions and murder mysteries were enjoyable. On the other hand, the Pailune Resident Commission system is one of the worst quest designs in the game. Having only one random NPC offer the next quest with no indication of who it is just wastes the player's time.

Character progression felt smooth throughout the game, but I wish equipment had more meaningful effects. Right now you mostly wear what looks best, which is nice for fashion, but I'd love to see more armor pieces with unique bonuses. For example, there's a pair of gloves that can stun enemies with lightning during unarmed combat—that kind of equipment is far more interesting. More gear synergies outside of Abyssal gear slots would add a lot to build variety.

Technically, the game was solid for me. I had a few crashes after updates, but verifying the game files through Steam always fixed them. The only recurring bug I encountered was that some quest NPCs would become startled when I approached and refuse to interact until I walked away and came back.

One thing that genuinely surprised me was the architecture. Every major city has its own identity, and each region feels completely different from the last. It makes the world memorable in a way that many open-world games fail to achieve.

Despite my criticism of the story, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Crimson Desert. If you enjoy open-world games that reward exploration and player freedom more than storytelling, I can easily recommend it. If you're looking for a narrative-driven experience that carries the entire game, this probably won't be the one for you.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI just hate this game. It stands for everything I dislike in modern gaming. Everything is surface level, everything is set dressing. The world is extremely pretty, but that doesn't matter when every npc, everything location, every faction, every quest that fills it is soulless filler.

I don’t care that this started as an mmo. Don’t use that as an excuse for horrible quests.

One of its most frustrating aspects is when it shows you/ lets you experience something cool, fun, or interesting and then completely ruins it. Get dragon? “Hey this is kinda fun”, you ride around for a bit and get off. Try to summon it again a bit later, nope. Gotta wait a couple days. Get a new weapon/ piece of armor. It’s the same as every other piece in the game. Save up to get a wagon to trade goods? Welcome to hell. You thought we would let you do something fun silly, greymane? Try waiting till Kliff gets a personality before being able to do anything you actually want to in the game.

It doesn’t play by its’ own rules.

At least 50 percent of bosses have frustratingly boring encounters. Example: Chapter 11 has like 5 of them or something, 2 are almost identical (basically a reskin) and were back-to-back. They are also some of the worst in game. This whole chapter is just using nature’s snare for 4 bosses with the exception to the last fight, which was just a standard fight. This happens a decent amount, with the reskinned bosses (not surprisingly) being the worst designed ones in the game. These are gimmick bosses, and they pop up to an annoying degree. The only thing they require of you is to cycle through all of your skills and see which one (better hope you unlocked it!) the developers decided would be this cube’s kryptonite. Once as you figure that out, the boss fight is over. It’s lazy as hell.

Combat could be great if the camera didn't get stuck behind foliage or a wall every 10 seconds. There is so much clutter on screen in these fights, it's hard to know where you or your enemy is at. Still, it is one of the strongest parts of the game. It doesn’t functionally make you better at dispatching mobs, but it’s fun chaining combos and flying everywhere as Damiane.

You will go through phases of thinking this game is good, and then having it make you hate it. I loved the first 10-15 hours, taken in by the beauty, visual fidelity, and sense of wonder. Then, I slowly slid into despising it for the next 30…enjoyed the next 20 or 30 hours…etc. The problem is that these are not just lows of “Oh, that’s kind of annoying”. It is more like wishing death on the whole development team and asking how 75% of the things in this game made it to release. And those lows are never balanced by something equally as good, especially once you get over the game’s eye candy. In something like Elder Scroll’s, you would get excited stumbling on a new location due to the mystery of what it could be. Is it a unique, hugely expansive cave system with tons of secrets, quests, loot, unique enemies i.e. Blackreach? No, it is never that in CD, never. You hear me? Stop thinking it will get better. It’s not.

There is a point around 125-150 hours that you start to really understand how shallow and busted CD is. You ask “I am at full build/skill tree, I just want to climb this mountain as Damiane, yet I still have to worry about conserving spirit/stamina and climb this same mountain I’ve climbed with axiom force/skystep 10 thousand times and have to wait on a ledge for 5 seconds to regain stamina.” “Why do I still have a cooldown on Blackstar when I have his upgraded form and have almost everything on the map explored.” “Why do I still get the same, absolutely soul sucking, barebones excuse for a quest for the 200th time (not an exaggeration) 200 hours in?” “Why are the Pailune side quests tied to an arm-wrestling challenge/achievement that won’t unlock unless you find a specific side quest that randomly spawns in the region after completing another one.” You literally must look up locations for each of the side quest starting points, travel to them, and hope to the Sun you got the right one, or you are repeating that process until the game finally bestows that glorious golden glow on your map. Did I mention there are at least 24 (I’m not ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ checking) of these missions that you have to do this for, EVERY TIME? This is just for one challenge. This is the constant theme of CD that never goes away. Completely unplaytested ideas that somehow made it into a fully released game. Doesn’t that sound fun!? Are you having fun yet loser greymane?

This game doesn’t make you feel like batman. It makes you feel like you are at a 9-5 office job that sucks you dry mentally. There is always SOMETHING that will be so absurdly implemented that you will be convinced this game wasn’t playtested in the slightest.

Kliff is the worst playable character, yet you will have to play as him almost exclusively until you beat the main quest, and sporadically after (ThIs Is cLifF bArs sToRy). Playing as Damaine is 10x better due to not feeling like I have sacks of potatoes around each of my limbs. Mixing rapier, grappling, hand to hand, and ranged is still fun after 200 hours. Oongka actually feels like a huge mfing tank and barbarian. Every hit is massive and substantial. He just sends dudes flying. Kliff just feels…slow. He sucks and is a bad boy.

One last note. Updates after a games launch should not be applauded when you are sold a game that is half baked to begin with. That’s Stockholm Syndrome. I will never get to experience what this game feels like as a semi complete experience because I was dumb enough to buy it a few weeks after release. We paid full price for a game, yet the Stans will suck the devs pee pee’s dribble because they are putting tape over a crumbling foundation. Thank you for the nourishment while you beat me daddy!
Just to be clear, I don’t wish these devs any ill will, that's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insane. I do hate this game though.

I do not recommend wasting your life to 100 percent this game like I did. Kill me.

The game is designed to pad out and waste your time so much that you cross the refund threshold before you finish the tutorial sections.

More bloat and tedious filler than game, designed to pad out the hours than do any entertaining. The UI is there to waste your time and pad out the "play" time. Quest design consistently contains just time wasting banal garbage just to pad out the time required to complete them. Pretty much all the dialogue is meaningless empty drivel that contains no lore, AIs would have done a better job. Apart from bosses, there are basically less than a handful of types of enemies, just dressed differently. The main story is just a series of random tasks and events with no meaningful narrative arc.

The graphics are beautiful, the world is large and lush, there are mechanics galore, there are even quite a lot of well animated fight cutscenes, pity that they failed so badly in putting a good game in the world they built.

\n\t\t\t\t\tCrimson Desert does a lot very well and a lot very poorly at the same time. To enjoy the great parts, you have to ignore and endure through the annoying parts. I can tell their development team is very talented but had zero direction. You will both love and hate this game at the same time. Whether or not a $70 game should be like this is up to you.

- GRAPHICS are stunning during day time. but lighting is horrendous during night time and inside dark areas. Forced TAA makes everything that moves look very blurry.
- COMBAT is fun, input lag makes movement feel janky, and the skill tree is confusing. So many things are unexplained or explained extremely poorly. There are so many controls for different things, you'll forget and have to look them up again constantly. So the tradeoff is that you can do a lot, but the UX design is terrible.
- STORY is very loosely strung together and hard to follow. I still don't know why I'm here or why I should care about anything or anyone besides the motive to "honor my clan". I don't really care about the story anyway, but if that's important to you, be aware of that.
- EXPLORATION can be hit or miss. Tons of interesting and unique points of interest to discover, incredibly beautiful landscapes to find, and creative puzzles to solve. If you can see it, you can go there. And, the view distance is truly impressive. However, I've explored many buildings, caves, and ruins, only to find literally nothing there. Not every location is like this, and sometimes I found cool stuff, but I've explored enough empty places to feel like it's not worth it anymore.
- UPDATES are frequent and the Crimson Desert team listens to the community. This is their biggest strength. It's a breath of fresh air. I commend them for everything they've fixed and added so far. Maybe in the future, my negatives will be resolved and I'll update my review.
- OVERALL, the game is vast and you'll find something to enjoy sprinkled throughout, but at the same time nothing is explained well and there's so many janky and frustrating things that make the game very annoying to play. I don't believe a game should be released like this. I've heard many say the game gets better the further into the game you are. I'm 50 hours in, frustrated, and bored. Idk about you, but I buy games to have fun whether it's hour 1 or hour 100, and the good parts don't excuse the bad parts.

FINAL THOUGHTS: There's a lot to enjoy, but 1) there's also enough jank to make Crimson Desert very annoying to play, 2) I'd give it 3/5 stars on Steam but has to be positive or negative, and 3) I personally wouldn't pay $70 for a 3/5 experience. If I could, I'd return the game, wait for more updates, and for it to go on sale.\t\t\t\t\t

I will continue to play it because I spent money on it. However mechanically the game is a nightmare. Clunkiest controls I have ever laid hands on. While the world is beautiful it is set back by the terrible voice acting removing the immersion. Like I said before you may simply say “You played one hour what do you know?!” Well a game that takes longer than an hour and you have to push past its faults in the beginning of the game is what developers keep failing with today. I can move past faults, but the game should be fun from the beginning to push past them not seem like a chore or obligation. In the beginning is is essentially a platformer and running quests jumping from platform to platform with a multi press jump mechanic that is terrible. The controls on controller make it feel like you have to press two to three buttons to do anything even the simplest of things. The combat from what I have seen gets better from watching my friends play. However playing it myself even without the combos feels extremely clunky and not smooth. All in all I’d give this game a 2/10 at this point. It’s story is dry from the beginning and doesn’t feel like you are asking questions you should be asking if you died and were revived. Compared to expedition 33 which is not the greatest game imo but it is fun, immersive, and story driven this is like a simulation test for their graphics engine and world building skills. Reminds me of the matrix demo when unreal engine 5 released.\t\t\t\t\t

This game would be a great game in 2016 but for 2026 it has many weaknesses.
This game is hard, too much to remember, too many dynamics, too many things to do.

You can glide which is nice, you cant fly which is weird.

Environment graphics are great, except rain and snow. Chracter graphics are 2010s level.
Great view and landscape. Sometimes you just sit and admire the view. Cities are a little dull though.
You have to find decent equipment you cant buy good stuff. Or you may kill for it.
You can climb nearly everywhere. I genuinly liked the climbing dynamics.
Inventory management is a mass. Healing is based on lots of different food types. You can eat 20 portions of stew in a fight.
In a battlefield everyone attacks you, noone attacks the enemy.
Picking things is a torture. Wanna collect that sword nah get a cockroach instead. Wanna get that potato here is a
dragonfly. You wanne go to shop, yep you just stole something.

\n\t\t\t\t\tThis is a positive rating, but not a positive review. I have never felt more conflicted with how I feel about a game more than this one. On one hand, there is so much to do, it truly is an RPG sandbox; play however you want, do whatever you want, the game lets you. On the other hand, it is the most empty, unmotivating, shallow game I have ever played. There are so many things to say, I genuinely feel overwhelmed on where to start.

Gameplay - The simplest way to put it is half the mechanics of this game are straight garbage. The UI for quests, the puzzles, the bosses. All of the gameplay elements could be fixed by a single method - playtesting. All they had to do was play it themselves or get a group of monkeys to do it for them, and they would realize a million things wrong. This was very evident by the state of release, to which they have slowly improved, and yet it's still baffling how many absolutely abhorrent mechanics are still in the game.

Story - it's bad. That's about it. It's 10x longer than it needs to be, and it has no idea what it wants to do. It has no stakes, it has no interesting characters, and it has awful dialogue and character motions (hold still when you talk, please!) Speaking of characters...

Playable characters - whoever's idea it was to create 3 playable characters instead of just 1 needs to be shot in the head. One of the most retarded decisions of all time. Show me the stats, I dare you, I guarantee less than 1% play the other 2 side characters and over 99% play the main guy. And they have the audacity to lock skills and weapons to these side characters, which you will never play, and if you have the desire to play them for whatever reason, they are almost always locked during the story anyway, doing who knows what and you can't even play them. And when the game forces you to play as them for a mission or two, they are severely underequipped, so you white-knuckle through the mission, and then play the main character and never look back. All they had to do was give all the characters the same equippable weapons, then give the side characters a bonus to those niche weapons, so everyone wins. But no, your main guy can only use a certain set of weapons, and the others are locked behind characters you will never play.

The World and The Loot - It's big, expansive, and breathtaking. And yet it's the most depressing, unmotivating, empty world to explore. Look at that mountain! I should go check it out. *Checks it out* Well, there were a few bandits, and 5 apples. Um. Okay. That's cool, I guess. Oh, some of these locations have a level up. Cool! And... I have 100 of these now. Oh look, a cave! Now time for some real loot! And... it's a basic sword with the same stats as every other sword in the game. A cloak that looks cool, but has the same stats. If you couldn't tell, the main problem with the world is the incentive. Why is it worth my time to go out and explore? In reality, there is no reason, other than it looks cool. Nothing in this game rewards you for your time. I see so many people comparing this to Skyrim, and to them I say you are retarded. Just because it's an open world RPG does not make it Skyrim. You wanna know why Skyrim still holds up after all these years? Because it rewards you for your time. Because there is incentive to explore every cave, every mountain, every town. CD was too afraid to do anything worth your time, and too afraid to balance the game, so they created every weapon - from the one you craft at the blacksmith to a legendary boss you fight at the end of the game - to have the same stats. And the armor is the same story. The only specialty with armor is that the designs are great, and if you are a fashion hunter, then there are lots of sets to find, and you'll look really cool. But this game has no incentive to do anything. It does not reward you for your time.

The Camp - The base of your operations. You'll spend a lot of your time here, sending out workers to slave away and bring back resources. It was a mechanic from Black Desert, and they somehow made it worse. How? INCENTIVE. There it is again. I send my workers to loot for me. Great! They got a ton of stone! What now? Use that stone to make my workers go get me logs! Great! Now I have logs and stone! Now what? Now send them to make you money! Great! Now I'm rich! Now what? There's nothing to spend my money on... Everything the slave system does really has no impact on you in any way. It's a distraction, a red herring, to make you think you're playing the game and making progress when in reality it's wasting your time. The camp is cool having all the necessities close by, but the worker system is beyond pointless.

Combat - The supposed highlight of this game, taking inspiration from Black Desert. Black Desert has incredible combat, and yet they managed to downgrade in this game. You can press 2 buttons, and you'll win every fight. Right click, and sometime Left + Right click. And there are so many abilities, so much freedom to fight how you want, and they all suck. You have an AoE ability, cool! Guess what happens when you kill an enemy? Everyone around you goes flying away. So now that AoE ability you love so much can never be used, because no one stays clumped together. I cannot tell you how many times you have to fight in this game, and every time I wanted to break down in tears knowing I had to go up to each individual enemy, press one button, watch an animation, then walk to the next guy who got blown away, press a button, and do the same thing over and over again. All these other abilities, no matter how cool they are, mean nothing if you can't use them properly. I'll also include food here. Food removes all stakes to every battle. No cooldown, full heal, no threat. Fun! BUT NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO EAT. JUST DON'T EAT IF ITS SO BROKEN. Good point. Life is also really easy. Maybe I should intentionally stop eating to make it more challenging. If it's an intended mechanic, and it's fundamentally broken, that's the fault of the creator, not the consumer.

Misc - Lots of side Activities. very cool. Also very lame.
Do you like Poker? Imagine playing Poker, but instead of playing with a flop, changing your bet and sizing each other up, the game changing dynamically based on what is placed on the table, you now get 2 cards... and that's it. You just bet based on your two cards. Sound fun? Now imagine playing it with retarded AI. Sound even more fun?
Fishing. Do you like fishing? Do you like having your line snap on every surface the fish crosses? Do you like not having fun?
Trading. Shameful in every way. This is one of those examples where all they had to do was playtest it and they would realize how insanely garbage it is.
Crafting. I love crafting weapons and armor. I crafted one time. Because everything is the same. I hear some of you saying BUT YOU CAN TRADE ONE POINT OF ATTACK FOR ONE POINT OF ATTACK SPEED!!! Yes. You can. And you can also kill the same enemy in the same amount of hits, in the same amount of time. Nothing changes. It's all an illusion of choice. The only thing you truly have a choice over is the slots you fill it with, and the look it has.
Mining. So many places to mine. So many places to chop trees. So little to do with it. Seriously, I mined every node I came across the first 50 hours and I had stacks and stacks of items I had nothing to do with. Use them for crafting! Sure, let me create another weapon with the same stats. Very worth my time!

I have to explain, all of the mechanics in Crimson Desert are fantastic, it is just executed in such an abhorrent, soulless way that it misses out on the potential it has. This game could have been the game for generations to come, but they truly don't understand why people play games. They like rewards, and they like to have fun. This game ultimately has neither, but you don't realize that at face value until you look behind the veil.

You’re going along killing, looting, progressing one minute them suddenly you’re on the internet trying to figure out some SPACEX / GOOGLE entrance exam test with lasers and multiple columns and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Only to figure out not only are some of these puzzles not self contained but that you were supposed to have travelled across the lands both high and low memorizing abstract symbols on walls to figure out a puzzle located miles away?…GTMFOH WITH THAT ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!!

And this waterfall fetish… how about a dungeon or two. Entire sets of high end loot with no effort to get them other than piercing water? Weird, WEIRD.

I liked the different factions, all the research that leads to even more wilder loot, the interior story and the in fighting within the realms, the economy (and all the golden apple/market exploiting) was great.
Yann was a PITA but I will admit its a clever way to walk new players to all the systems at play.

\n\t\t\t\t\tCrimson Desert Beautiful World, Great Combat, But Missing Something

After spending some time playing Crimson Desert, I have mixed feelings about it. I don't regret buying or playing it, because there is genuinely a lot to enjoy, but at the same time it feels like the game is missing that special spark that keeps you completely hooked.

The biggest strength of the game is, without a doubt, exploration. The world is absolutely beautiful and encourages you to go wherever you want. See a mountain in the distance? You can climb it. Notice a strange ruin or forest? Go explore it. The freedom is fantastic, and simply wandering around the map can be incredibly rewarding. The environments are varied and make exploration one of the most enjoyable parts of the game.

Another feature I really liked is the variety of companions and mounts. You can collect different pets like dogs, cats, birds, and even rarer companions. The mount system is also impressive—you can ride horses, wolves, bears, drakes, dragons, and more. It adds personality to the adventure and gives you plenty of options depending on your playstyle.

The combat is easily one of the highlights. It's fast, satisfying, and stylish. Pulling off combos, jumping into the middle of large groups of enemies, and chaining attacks together feels amazing. Every fight has the potential to be exciting, and the combat system has enough depth to stay enjoyable for quite a while.

Unfortunately, the game also has some major weaknesses.

The story is by far the biggest disappointment. Honestly, it barely feels like it exists. If you're buying this game expecting a memorable narrative, interesting characters, or emotional moments, you'll probably be very disappointed. I would personally rate the story 1/10. It's forgettable and does little to motivate you to continue beyond simply wanting to explore or fight.

Progression is another issue. Everything feels very slow, and while some players may enjoy the long grind, others may find it exhausting. It often feels like you're putting in a lot of time without getting a meaningful sense of progression.

The gameplay can also become repetitive after many hours. Although the combat is excellent, you'll eventually notice that you're doing many of the same activities repeatedly. The amazing combat helps hide this problem for a while, but it doesn't completely solve it.

There are also occasional technical annoyances. Sometimes your character takes a while to load in properly, which can be immersion-breaking and is surprising for a game with such impressive visuals.

Overall, Crimson Desert is a good game with incredible exploration, excellent combat, and plenty of content to discover. However, it lacks the "wow" factor that would make it truly unforgettable. A stronger story, faster progression, and more variety in gameplay would have elevated it to another level.

This game is a fantasy sandbox masterpiece. The graphics are stunning and the strongest part is the exploration of the world. Never felt it in a long time that just going exploring and interacting with the world was this rewarding and exciting. You have so many different system that all feel pretty well thought out and also have good and working gameplay. The story is ok. And its totaly alright that it isnt mindblowing. A solid framework to introduce to this vast open world. Been playing this a few months after release and couldnt find any major bugs yet. 10 out of 10 would totally get a parrot as pet again.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI almost never leave comments on games. This time I feel I need to warn you not to make the same mistake I did. This is not a top game. Nor is it worth money they want for it. This is a B class game. Looks nice, seems to be good at first glance, but it turns to be an empty world of unfullfilled promises. Story is flat, dialogs rather naive, quests as if written by some AI tool. For me fighting system was also not very enjoyable, but this could be more personal inclination, and objectively would rather be okayish taking into account genre standards.
All in all, if you want a single-player MMO-like game, you can go for it, but if you look for something at least a bit deeper than a thin layer of nice visuals and basic gameplay, it will be a waste of time and money. If only I could I'd eagerly give it back. And don't understand such good opinions it has. Let's fight together for a better industry giving us quality products not rehaeted pizzas from supermarket served on a silver plate.\t\t\t\t\t

Crimson Desert feels like one of the most ambitious games ever made, but also one of the most unfocused. It reaches moments where it genuinely feels like a masterpiece, only to immediately frustrate you with poor puzzle design, an awful story, clunky controls, or unnecessarily complicated systems. I never stopped admiring its world, but I frequently stopped enjoying the game itself. If the developers had focused on refining fewer systems instead of trying to include everything, this could have been one of the greatest RPGs ever made. Instead, it's an excellent open-world sandbox held back by an identity crisis.

The review:
I have very mixed feelings about this game.

At one point, it seemed like the greatest video game of all time. It had endless possibilities, vibrant open world, amazing combat, breathtaking graphics with insane draw distance, decent character customizations, pets, and much more...

Despite being so ambitious, this game lacks identity. It tries to do so many things and takes inspiration from some of our favourite video games. But we all know a game for everyone is a game for noone.

Some of the aspects this game needs HEAVY improvements:

Story: 2/10 - the only good thing about the story is the voice acting, everything else sucks. I can't even be bothered to tell you how annoying bad it is
Controls: 4/10 - it never stops feeling better, you will get used to the controls but never really love it
Combat: 7/10 - feels good againts mobs of enemies and some bosses are really fun. But so many bosses in this game have the most horrific design in the history of video games.
Puzzles: 0/10 - I don't even remember the amount of times I had to search youtube for stupid ♥♥♥♥. No puzzle in this game is innovative or fun. Almost everything is a puzzle and it is super tiring. These devs should never be allowed to design another puzzle and I am so dead serious. This aspect is what killed the game for me mostly.
Menus: 5/10 - needs massive overhaul
Camp System: 7/10 - Was fun at the start, gets tedious pretty quick
Enemy Variety: 6/10 – Regular encounters stay enjoyable thanks to the combat system, but enemy types begin to repeat, and several bosses rely more on frustrating mechanics than genuinely challenging gameplay.

What kept me playing:
Open world: 9/10 - Very beautiful, vibrant, interesting points of interest
Exploration: 9/10 – This is easily it's biggest strength. Every region looks distinct, there's always something to discover, and simply traveling across the map feels rewarding. The draw distance and environmental variety are among the best I have ever seen
Mounts, pets, special utilities: 9/10 - Very cute and fun
Power Fantasy: 8/10 - It feels good upgrading skills, weapons and armor and character customization is fun
