Whether I change my review to fully positive will be determined after I have either played the game to completion, or determined that I am done with it. The writing and humor feel a bit cringe-worthy at first, but it starts to warm on you and the characters quickly reveal their charms. And the Fire Emblem-esque gameplay is fun for the few hours I've engaged with at least. However: I cannot in good conscience recommend this game for the fact that said gameplay has been carefully engineered to do everything in its power to hamper the story.
I'm generally not the first to argue about time management mechanics in games, but this one has a time-management tumor. Literally everything you do costs the in-game time resource.
-Want to change literally a single piece of a party member's equipment? That'll cost you time.
-Want to replay battles so you can complete optional objectives for the various rewards? That'll cost you time.
-Lost a fight because you overestimated just how teeth-knockingly hard the higher difficulties would be? Not only will that cost you time, but it'll increase your burnout, a status that weakens the protagonist and, you guessed it, requires you to spend time to reduce it!
This game has a built-in death spiral where the worse you do at it the harder it will subsequently become. Which is absolutely miserable design.
Oh and what was that about hampering the story? Talking to your companions and getting all that juicy character relationship stuff the game is marketed on? That also costs all the time you're burning just trying to scuff your way through the gameplay portion.
"Well surely if I take too many big hits, or I misspend my time, I can always swallow my pride and reload my save right?"
Well haha, no. This game auto-saves constantly, and only keeps around your latest one. (By the way, if you quit game in the middle of a conversation because something came up or it crashed or whatever you can't re-enter the conversation on a reload, and you just permanently lose the relationship point it was supposed to give you, awesome bug.)
I'm already past the refund timer, and I do want to experience the good things this game has to offer, so once I'm done being infuriated by it I'll probably go digging around in the files to see if I can find where the saves are kept, and then I'll start one more new save and scum my way through whether the devs want me to or not, but unless you want to do that yourself, or you enjoy the sound of time management CBT (which hey, if you're the audience for this game maybe you like one of those things) I'd steer clear in the game's current state.
Oh and there's no log of previously read text in this visual novel-esque game, which is just lovely since the lack of manual reloading means there's not even a roundabout way to go back if you accidentally register two clicks and skip a line, or just need to go over the conversation again to really register what you've read. Real nice cherry on top of this game design cake.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I want to love this game so badly. It conceptually is exactly what I want from games. Charming characters, fun romance shenanigans, and a tactics gameplay loop. The problem is that it the gameplay is so frustratingly poorly designed that I'm not even sure where to begin fixing it. I could just play on easy or normal. I started doing that too. Unfortunately the game became too easy to the point where I was no longer engaged in the gameplay.
So let's start with probably the most common talking point I've seen so far:
The death spiral. When losing a chapter you start it over but with more burnout and less time in your next free time segment. This makes the following chapter harder which can result in losing more and so on. It also actively deprives you of the narrative stuff that some people may want to experience in tandem. You also get certain rewards for increasing your bonds so it's mechanically detrimental too.
Seems like an easy enough fix though, just reload a save. :)
You can't do that though, in fact that made sure that if you ever want to return to a previous part of the story, you will have to replay the entire game up to that point. I'm not opposed to single save options. I've done XCom and Fire Emblem iron-man runs before. Just mash skip on the story content and start over...
but there isn't a skip button, or a speed read button, or a chapter select.
Let's pretend all of that doesn't exist for a second. That you could just jump to saves or restart chapters as you need.
Unfortunately, the early game is incredibly tightly designed and not in a good way. Just changing equipment actively takes away your free time resources. So unless you're omniscient you'll be entering a battle at very meaningful disadvantages. Top it off with hit rates being so absurdly shaky that most of these chapters are very luck dependent. I spent 5 hours workshopping chapter 3 for a reliable way to get a 3-star clear without relying on dodges or critical hits. I'm sure it's *possible* but a good tactics game has to have more than one solution per chapter. Otherwise it's a puzzle game and puzzle games tend to avoid rng.
I'm sure the developers have this vision of an overworked and underpaid corporate employee. That many of these systems were inspired by such an idea and they wanted you to commit to have to live with the consequences. It's unfortunately completely at odds with the light-hearted, goofy, and romantic vibe that it has.
Not only does this game need a proper save system, not only does it need to go through and balance out its early chapters (chapter 2 is actually losable on turn one if you're unlucky and there's nothing you can do about it), it needs to embrace that not every vision it has for the experience needs to be enforced. This game could do with variable difficulty options, changing burnout values, free time penalties, single-save mode, etc.
And whatever they decide is the baseline hardest difficulty needs to actually be play-tested.
I will come back to this game. I truly want to love it. There's nothing more heart-wrenching than accepting that something you want to enjoy just fundamentally hates you and your time. Finding out it was a well crafted tactics RPG with a stunning voice cast and a kind and well tuned dev team? 1. Silly legalese
2. Rats
3. Waxing/Waning mechanics and combos
4. Art direction (characters and environments)
I also share some of the critiques voiced by others:
1. Unless you're playing a roguelike, auto-save should feel like a safety net -- not a punishment. I've already accidentally double-clicked through several dialogue options without even getting to read them, and now I never will.
2. Semi-related to #1, you are "warned" not to use the [Restart Battle] button to cheat, but it hasn't shown up as an option any of the times I've wanted to use it (to cheat).
3. More than once I've been presented dialogue options with no apparent difference. I understand needing the plot to progress in a certain direction (like having to work late so two characters can end up alone together), but circumstances beyond my control could force me onto the intended path AFTER I've selected an option that actually appeals to me.
Also a few gripes that might just be me:
1. The title screen has junk pixels that look like someone sloppily erased over Continue, New Game, and Settings. Pretty minor, but it's the very first screen players see, and they'll see it every time they open the game.
2. Sometimes I would like the dialogue to progress automatically while I do something else, like write a Steam review while a cat talks at me for far too long. In other words, I wish the game didn't pause/mute on focus loss.

1. Unless you're playing a roguelike, auto-save should feel like a safety net -- not a punishment. I've already accidentally double-clicked through several dialogue options without even getting to read them, and now I never will.
2. Semi-related to #1, you are "warned" not to use the [Restart Battle] button to cheat, but it hasn't shown up as an option any of the times I've wanted to use it (to cheat).
3. More than once I've been presented dialogue options with no apparent difference. I understand needing the plot to progress in a certain direction (like having to work late so two characters can end up alone together), but circumstances beyond my control could force me onto the intended path AFTER I've selected an option that actually appeals to me.
Also a few gripes that might just be me:
1. The title screen has junk pixels that look like someone sloppily erased over Continue, New Game, and Settings. Pretty minor, but it's the very first screen players see, and they'll see it every time they open the game.
2. Sometimes I would like the dialogue to progress automatically while I do something else, like write a Steam review while a cat talks at me for far too long. In other words, I wish the game didn't pause/mute on focus loss.

First, about good stuff. Art direction and writing are great. Voice over is absolutely awesome. Game is fun at its core. We need more games like this.
The main problem is combination of time management system and puzzle battles with side objectives. Puzzle battles are fine on its own, but this approach usually means you have to do A LOT of reties in order to figure out all gimmicks and non-obvious mechanics.
But you do not have unlimited retries in this game. And you cannot change equipment or character builds once you start a battle. There is no way to rollback to previoush checkpoint.
So... the only way to actually finish the game on harder difficulty (1) without prior knowledge, (2) while avoiding death spiral and (3) actually having time to chat with party members IS ... save backups / manual save editing. Really??

Whenever a hero dies in battle, we replay the battle and try to prove that they died because of their own mistakes so we can avoid paying the insurance claim. :D

And the voice acting and dialogue... Oh my god. I honestly didn't expect them to be this good. They are absolutely phenomenal.

If you're like me and suck at strategy games, the easy mode makes the game a breeze. If you want a more challenging experience, there's plenty of that in the harder modes too!

I hope this game gets more love and more content added, because I've fallen for Rayna and her crew of misfits. But I can't recommend it outright, simply because if you're looking for a positive review to push you into buying the game, you're going to get this no matter what I say in this review. So pop of King/Queen, go gettem. BUT, if you're on the fence and want something that feels like a fully polished game with great writing, fun combat to keep you engaged. Many scene of lovey-dovey kisses, lewd hand holding, or down right NSFW scenes. Then you should look somewhere else, unfortunately for that. You're going to have to go to games like BG3 or Mass Effect. Let this gem cook just a bit longer.
However I should also explain what I dislike about the game and why it has led me to not recommend it, just in case you actually are curious. Now, the fighting really isn't the reason most people will play this game. I understand that, isn't why I played the game as well. But it's such a mainstay in the game that it can't be ignored and unfortunately, its the weakest system in the game, by a county mile. The structure of the game goes like this. Rest, combat, Rest, combat, Rest, combat, Rest, combat. So on and so forth. I get that it can't be complex or other games like it do something akin to how it plays, but I feel so let down that I can't explore this world and its weirdness, that I can only ever talk to these characters in brief railroaded scenes. On the topic of the actual gameplay, its.... fine. Its not great, its nothing to write home about and its not so poorly implemented that it kills the vibe. That being said however, and before we do continue. I'm not a game designer so take this with a healthy grain of salt. But it feels like it was reaching for something greater, but wasn't allowed to grab it. I can see where they were going, I can see how some fights were planned to be this exciting encounter... but it never actually plays out like that, some fights are needlessly hard. Others are oddly easy, some enemies are more annoying to deal with by degrees then others, well some bosses are so stupidly simple that I was left wondering if that was it? Very rarely did I use the swag that the game gave me, simple because most of it was so niche that it was basically useless, or in some fights I would soft lock myself out of three stars because the swag I choose to go into the fight with would hinder me in a way that I couldn't complete it. Stack on top of that, a oddly thought out time management system that penalizes you for dong ANYTHING! With a debuff system that makes failing anything so extremely painful that doing anything but mid-maxing fights in the harder difficulties. A must. Again, this pain and frustration can be easily skipped by playing on lower difficulties... but at that point. I have to ask why make them in the first place?
Moving on from that, there are little things as well. VC's messing up a line and starting over while the game/chat box doesn't acknowledge the mess up. Broken chat boxes, mix matched VC lines and what is written on the chat box. I am pretty sure also that some of the sprites eyes were broken as well, as in one of their eyes would go missing. Also, I do not know if this was just something that happened to me. But I am pretty sure that some scenes that happened on my playthrough happened out of order? I can't verify cause some of them are spoilers, so I'll just have to wait on that bit. But just enough little things that makes me wonder how bad the game was before their fix.
Now lastly, the Romance and characters. Honestly, I feel extremely torn about this. I love the characters. I love that they're not cookie cutter characters, they all have personalities. They all have reasons and they all stick to them. The game made it feel like I was allowed to like them or dislike them, purely based on who they were as a person. I wasn't snapped into loving them all, or hating one person over another. Sure I didn't have the freedom as in BG3 or Mass Effect, but this is a harem game for Rayan (who deserves it) so I get that in the end of the day. I can't stab one of them in their sleep. But it STILL didn't force me to love them, it allowed me to dislike a character. Which, up front. I did, there are characters in here that I just straight up don't like. BUT, and a big BUT. There are characters in here that I didn't like, but ended up loving at the end. Simple because the game let me, because they were characters. Who breathed, who felt alive, who would dislike an action or not break who they were to conform to a cookie cutter idea of what the "average" person wanted. The game, the writers and the producers. Let me dislike a character, then let me fall in love with them. I do not know if this will be a common sentiment, all I know is I was so tired of every character in fiction or shows or games. Being so perfect and sexual and blank and boring and forgettable. It is a breath of fresh air, when a dating sim lets you dislike a character you can romance. HOWEVER, with all that out of the way! I think the game would, even with the bad gameplay loop. Be a full on endorsement, if they let me have more time with the characters. I eluded to this before, but with how linear and "railroad" the game is, there isn't time or space to interact with characters outside the 1 - 2 beats of the game. You can't take these characters out on a date, you can't interact with them outside of very scripted events. You can't give them gifts or learn more about this through the map or through the world. Which was honestly a let down, especially for me. Who ended up falling in love with this weird, awkward, confusingly horny world. I had wished to learn more about it then through walls of text, with the people I was smooching. On top of that, there is only like two different variations of sprites for Rayna and any chosen character. A big let down with how horny this game is and how much of a build up there are to some of these scenes. But one of my bigger issues, was with the group itself. All but two characters are Poly, which means there really isn't a reason NOT to smooch them all. I get that this is Rayna's harem game (the nerd deserves it) but it would spice up the relationships and group dynamics (IMO) if they kept that feeling of everyone feeling like they lived in the world and not a harem game. They don't have to act negatively, but everyone being on board with being in a Poly doesn't feel right, especially for one character who was Poly when I really thought she wouldn't be. It just makes replaying the game feel redundant, since 50% of the game is meh and you're only ever seeing at most, two versions of every sprite.
If you've read this far, I hope that it came across that I loved this game. I loved the characters, I disliked some. I loved the world, and disliked the gameplay. But most importantly, I hope that I expressed why I cannot recommend this to someone who is on the fence. I do hope that this game and this world gets more love. I hope that this is not the end of Rayna's story and that I can interact with them in the future in different and fun ways. It was hard, thus.
