\n\t\t\t\t\tUPDATE: They have added a toggle to the game that turns off the time management (I would somewhat prefer more levers to fine tune the time management, such as turning off the costs for failure and changing equipment while retaining the possibility that you may need to choose who to prioritize talking to after battle) but it's an acceptable band-aid for the moment. Whether I change my review to fully positive will be determined after I have either played the game to completion, or determined that I am done with it. The original review, written in frustration at the time management mechanics, remains below for posterity:

The writing and humor feel a bit cringe-worthy at first, but it starts to warm on you and the characters quickly reveal their charms. And the Fire Emblem-esque gameplay is fun for the few hours I've engaged with at least. However: I cannot in good conscience recommend this game for the fact that said gameplay has been carefully engineered to do everything in its power to hamper the story.

I'm generally not the first to argue about time management mechanics in games, but this one has a time-management tumor. Literally everything you do costs the in-game time resource.
-Want to change literally a single piece of a party member's equipment? That'll cost you time.
-Want to replay battles so you can complete optional objectives for the various rewards? That'll cost you time.
-Lost a fight because you overestimated just how teeth-knockingly hard the higher difficulties would be? Not only will that cost you time, but it'll increase your burnout, a status that weakens the protagonist and, you guessed it, requires you to spend time to reduce it!

This game has a built-in death spiral where the worse you do at it the harder it will subsequently become. Which is absolutely miserable design.

Oh and what was that about hampering the story? Talking to your companions and getting all that juicy character relationship stuff the game is marketed on? That also costs all the time you're burning just trying to scuff your way through the gameplay portion.

"Well surely if I take too many big hits, or I misspend my time, I can always swallow my pride and reload my save right?"
Well haha, no. This game auto-saves constantly, and only keeps around your latest one. (By the way, if you quit game in the middle of a conversation because something came up or it crashed or whatever you can't re-enter the conversation on a reload, and you just permanently lose the relationship point it was supposed to give you, awesome bug.)

I'm already past the refund timer, and I do want to experience the good things this game has to offer, so once I'm done being infuriated by it I'll probably go digging around in the files to see if I can find where the saves are kept, and then I'll start one more new save and scum my way through whether the devs want me to or not, but unless you want to do that yourself, or you enjoy the sound of time management CBT (which hey, if you're the audience for this game maybe you like one of those things) I'd steer clear in the game's current state.

Oh and there's no log of previously read text in this visual novel-esque game, which is just lovely since the lack of manual reloading means there's not even a roundabout way to go back if you accidentally register two clicks and skip a line, or just need to go over the conversation again to really register what you've read. Real nice cherry on top of this game design cake.\t\t\t\t\t

I want to love this game so badly. It conceptually is exactly what I want from games. Charming characters, fun romance shenanigans, and a tactics gameplay loop. The problem is that it the gameplay is so frustratingly poorly designed that I'm not even sure where to begin fixing it. I could just play on easy or normal. I started doing that too. Unfortunately the game became too easy to the point where I was no longer engaged in the gameplay.

So let's start with probably the most common talking point I've seen so far:
The death spiral. When losing a chapter you start it over but with more burnout and less time in your next free time segment. This makes the following chapter harder which can result in losing more and so on. It also actively deprives you of the narrative stuff that some people may want to experience in tandem. You also get certain rewards for increasing your bonds so it's mechanically detrimental too.
Seems like an easy enough fix though, just reload a save. :)
You can't do that though, in fact that made sure that if you ever want to return to a previous part of the story, you will have to replay the entire game up to that point. I'm not opposed to single save options. I've done XCom and Fire Emblem iron-man runs before. Just mash skip on the story content and start over...
but there isn't a skip button, or a speed read button, or a chapter select.

Let's pretend all of that doesn't exist for a second. That you could just jump to saves or restart chapters as you need.

Unfortunately, the early game is incredibly tightly designed and not in a good way. Just changing equipment actively takes away your free time resources. So unless you're omniscient you'll be entering a battle at very meaningful disadvantages. Top it off with hit rates being so absurdly shaky that most of these chapters are very luck dependent. I spent 5 hours workshopping chapter 3 for a reliable way to get a 3-star clear without relying on dodges or critical hits. I'm sure it's *possible* but a good tactics game has to have more than one solution per chapter. Otherwise it's a puzzle game and puzzle games tend to avoid rng.

I'm sure the developers have this vision of an overworked and underpaid corporate employee. That many of these systems were inspired by such an idea and they wanted you to commit to have to live with the consequences. It's unfortunately completely at odds with the light-hearted, goofy, and romantic vibe that it has.

Not only does this game need a proper save system, not only does it need to go through and balance out its early chapters (chapter 2 is actually losable on turn one if you're unlucky and there's nothing you can do about it), it needs to embrace that not every vision it has for the experience needs to be enforced. This game could do with variable difficulty options, changing burnout values, free time penalties, single-save mode, etc.

And whatever they decide is the baseline hardest difficulty needs to actually be play-tested.

I will come back to this game. I truly want to love it. There's nothing more heart-wrenching than accepting that something you want to enjoy just fundamentally hates you and your time. The game just came out though, this review is subject to change and once again. If you aren't here for the tactics gameplay, this review doesn't matter.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI'm not sure I'd recommend Ledgerbound to everyone, but I think my experience is going to be more positive than negative. I'm going to lay out the rest of my thoughts as "Pros" and "Cons", but I think it's all very subjective, and clearly others have liked what I disliked and vice versa.

Pros
  • The tactical gameplay is fun, and I enjoy the loop of no save combat with a more forgiving replay mode after. It's taken some getting used to, for sure, in a world where we're all a little too used to save scumming, but when I let myself fail, the replay is actually very fun and has a great in-universe explanation.
  • The voice acting. Obviously, there are some great names here--particularly Cherami Leigh, whose enthusiastic tour guide Sylvie is 95% adorable, but every once in a while slips into a register that reminds me she also played one of my favorite tactical RPG villains. And the entire game is fully voice-acted, which is extremely impressive.
  • Shockingly, the romance. I started out this game kind of hating one of the main characters, Jazz, which led to an oddly fulfilling relationship where I played them as a little toxic, constantly poking at each other, but ultimately turning to each other for comfort. The relationship dynamics actually feel like they matter to the story, giving it a visual novel-type energy that I really enjoyed alongside the combat.

Cons
  • The game's humor is a lot. I think this definitely is going to depend on the player, but it wasn't really to my taste. Basically, if the trailers are making you cringe, the game is going to keep that feeling ALIVE.
  • While I really like the "no saves" aspect of the combat, I really wish you could save outside of it. This is because the story is so deep and reminiscent of a visual novel. If you want to explore other paths, you're going to have to start from the beginning, which I honestly can't see myself doing any time soon.
  • For this last point, forgive the soapbox. At least at the point I'm at now, basically all of the female characters are polyamorous and most of the male characters are monogamous. This worked out for me, because my Rayna is collecting girlfriends like Pokémon, but I do think the optics are a little weird. It seems like all the queer options (and one freaky dude) are interested in a non-traditional relationship, but the rest of the men are not, even when there are in-universe other potential romances for them.

Finding out it was a well crafted tactics RPG with a stunning voice cast and a kind and well tuned dev team? I've been unable to put it down (except to write this review) and I can't wait to play over and over and 100% it and play it on the hardest difficulty and make up stupid challenges to keep playing it over and over and over again!

First, about good stuff. Art direction and writing are great. Voice over is absolutely awesome. Game is fun at its core. We need more games like this.

The main problem is combination of time management system and puzzle battles with side objectives. Puzzle battles are fine on its own, but this approach usually means you have to do A LOT of reties in order to figure out all gimmicks and non-obvious mechanics.

But you do not have unlimited retries in this game. And you cannot change equipment or character builds once you start a battle. There is no way to rollback to previoush checkpoint.

So... the only way to actually finish the game on harder difficulty (1) without prior knowledge, (2) while avoiding death spiral and (3) actually having time to chat with party members IS ... save backups / manual save editing. Really??

How things could be improved:

1) Unlimited retries for initial battle and replay battle.
2) Allow to re-equip & re-skill after starting battle.
3) Changing equipment should not be part of time management.

\n\t\t\t\t\tLedgerbound is, in many ways, a great game. It has personality, interesting characters with fairly decent dialogue but, in many ways, it's clearly unfinished. There will be some spoilers in this review, mostly considering the final stretch of the game. I would consider these "light" spoilers but I might be wrong.

Game came out missing basic features such as a chat log, something present in most games that feature "visual novel aspects, that has since been added, but there's still written dialogue that doesn't match voice acting, voice acting that continues on after the text has stopped, sometimes voice acting won't play at all or the volume of one of the characters will be disproportional to the others; the later you get into the game the more these issues appear.

Some item descriptions are extremely vague and sometimes the bonds you establish with your party, which allow for character growth, might just be tossed away in your next interaction with them, making it feel as though these bonds don't matter as much as they seem.

I have some gripes with the story, especially around the final stretch wherein you get chance to talk to your teammates after an important event just happened, one of these bits is giving a comic relief character a chance to chat with you, but not two other characters that would be greatly affected by this "twist". Additionally, there is a time when you're in a rush and everyone you attempt to talk to will dismiss you as the party IS in a rush. However, you can still go "enjoy" a horny scene, which felt very odd and out of character for our protagonist.

This all to say, I'm loving Ledgerbound but i don't think it's worth the price tag at this moment in time. I bought the deluxe edition to support developers but that was before I knew what feels like an unfinished, rushed game.

I have since finished the game; There were some actual interesting twists at the end, which made the ability to not manually save and load previous saves even more of a terrible idea.

The game "features" polyamory as an option, yet, in the ending only one of my romance companions seemed to "exist", funnily enough, one of my other partners said that "platonic love" was also important, which honestly felt super weird since we were dating.

The game also baits you into believing there will be much more content and levels with the "Company Swag" type lootboxes, which also contain repeats that seemingly have no effect, just a wasted pull. The lootboxes are tiered by how well you perform in the game however, they only go as far as half of what is shown. It tells you there are further tiers above but they are unattainable, whether this is because they're planning on releasing DLC, future updates with more content, adding a New Game Plus is unknown but doesn't change the fact that it is misleading.

A sizeable amount of the bonds/supports you have with your team don't really have any closure, especially with Hat Rack and your chosen Shareholder. These dialogues can also be quite incoherent, sometimes there will be a decent chunk of character development and then suddenly, it's gone in the next scene.

TLDR: Cool game as a concept, especially for the voice-work, comedy, LGB (yes, LGB) representation, and they included Polyamory which often isn't represented. This game is in no way worth 30 EUR in terms of content. I only got as many hours as I did because I was playing through with a friend and one of my save files, which was about halfway done, crashed with no way of recovering my progress thus artificially increasing the time needed to complete the game.\t\t\t\t\t

"Finished" the game now. I say finished, but the ending sequence was actually, in my opinion, the worst part of the game and I skipped through a LARGE amount of it.

Game is missing SO MUCH QoL, key binds, basic things to make the experience of the game play more function.
The characters, voice acting and dialog absolutely carry the game.
Strangely the cast is both too big and too small. Too small for the battle, there should be more, allowing me to deply various teams depending on the battle.
Too big for camps and dialog. I simply can't be bothered with all of them.
Everyone is horny, as advertised but frankly, it gets old as does a large amount of their "quirks".
In that sense the game is too long. Many of the things that are fun and charming eventually becomes "eh" or even bothersome in some cases.
For a game with a time management mechanic, certain parts could have managed the time better.

Depending on what you think of the characters and humour the game somewhere between a 5/10 to a solid 7/10, but the lack of standard QoL as well as the fact that had the game not been specifically telling me I was almost at the end, I would have probably dropped it takes it to a 6/10 for me personally.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tThe voice acting is fantastic and the characters are really funny. The gameplay is mostly enjoyable as a strategy game fan, but I do have one major complaint that's kinda ruining it for me.

You cannot manually save, so you're forced to use the very frequent autosaves. That's fine on its own, but the problem comes in when you want to play on higher difficulties.

I'm the kind of player that likes to grind out a hard mission on a high difficulty until I figure out a strategy that works, but in this game every time you fail a mission you increase your burnout (which is basically a stacking debuff on the main character), which means every time you fail on a hard mission it only gets harder and harder. Then even if you do eventually break through that you're stuck dealing with the immense amount of burnout you accrued. As far as I can tell there's no way to go back and roll for more equipment or swap things around once you start a mission either. The only option you have is to decrease the difficulty, which I don't want to do. I want to grind it out. Maybe I'm missing or misunderstanding something, but it has really killed my desire to open up the game again.

So basically, if you want to play it for the story, then I recommend it. If you want to play it for the challenge, then it's hard to recommend because of this punishment for failure and lack of flexibility.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tLedgerbound is a great game, absolutely worth the money. I spent around 23 hours on my first playthrough and i had a great time. The characters are all have super fun personalities, make fun jokes and have silly little subvesions where it makes sense. You unlock them progressivly throughout the game, and it never failed to excite me when i got a new party member, but you also get your last member early enough for you to build a propper connection with them.

Voice Acting
The voice acting is amazing together with well written dialoge and a voiced narrator makes every conversation fun to be part of. It also makes it painful when you dont have the ability to talk to everyone.

Difficulty
Difficulty was an awkward one for me. I started out on a higher difficulty (the one over lunar i think, cant remember name of it), but ended up turning it down. The challenge was fun, but the game also forces resource management beween time, burnout and dialog with all the fun characters. The game has a few side objectives hidden until relevant in a combat, and a tendancy to one-shot or crit you which would be fine if it didnt cost more resouces afterwards. I think the higher difficulties are probvably good for a fully run where you dont care about dialog, but if youre exploring the romance (or want to complete side objectives for pretty Shareholder) i think the lunar one is all good.

Iron Man Mode
Theres also the fact that the game has Iron Man mode style saving, not letting you load back in a game where it would be fun for some of the conversations, this is especially annoying when you've spent 20+ hours on the save and you cant see what the other option for the ending wouldve looked lie (i felt like i chose the bad ending). Im gonna be honest, missing that one shareholder meeting bummed me out.

Music
Thats the harsh out of the way. Now back to the good stuff. The music in this game is so well done. It reuses the same battletheme for most of game, but the variations still keep it fresh enough, and some of the other pieces are just so cool (im looking at you joy's theme). So good to the point im listening to it in the background while writing this review (and playing deadlock ngl)

The Vibes
Im gonna be honest. I went into this only having watched a few tictoc ads that showed the cool characters, and the game was significantly more horny than i expected (not necessarily bad thing). What stood out to me is how well done the characers are made into their silly stereotypes, and overly hornyness at times, yet the game balances so well out with alot of genuine moments of kinship. For a game where you can romance a stinky homeless man that stinky homeless man really be jerking your heart. And the same goes for every character.

The romances are really fun, and the characters mostly being polyamorous so that you can talk you your favorite babes (that includes the boys too) makes the game alot of fun. My favorite part about it though has to be the way you lock in if you want to be romantic with a character or not early on in the relation, and if you lock platonic, you can still get some really awesome scenes with those characters that differ from the romance ones.

Burnout & Time
In conjunction with the iron man mode style saving, the burnout and time systems really add a fun resource management to the game that i really enjoyed despite wanting to talk to all my party members, its a really cool idea and its really flavorfully done.

Combat
Combat looks very simple on the surface, common rock, paper, scissors with the elements, and a bit of Melee vs Ranged vs Magic to spice it up, but with the amount of custumization you get in camp together with the unique abilities the enemies get, you actually have a bit of depth to how you want your characters to play. Also subclasses, but they also feel a bit wierd considering once your locked into a class its locked. No testing and trying to figure out what you like.

Summary
All in all i really enjoyed the experience, and i would deffinetly recommend the game. Im probably going to replay the game at some point to romance other characters than the ones i did first playthrough. The game has its struggles if your goal is just to experience everything, but the experiences you do get are top level.\t\t\t\t\t

First and foremost the best part of this game are the characters and voice acting. The voice acting is top notch and they really do a great job bringing these characters to life. I liked just about every character and even some of the ones I didn't like at first really grew on me. You can date all your party members too and the romances all feel good. When you can endear me to the stinky crazy rat guy, you've really done something right (but none shine in comparison to my beloved Jazz).

While you can be polyamorous in this game, I feel like it's done as a bit of an after thought. By the end of the game it felt like only one of them was acknowledged at all. None of the other characters really seem to care and mostly feels like you're just the center of a harem where they only like you and don't care about the others. There's 2 party members that are strictly monogamous. (Idk if there's story reasons for it, and i'm not gonna replay the game TWICE to figure that out) so why not let them all be dateable together at that point? The only one of the two that has an outcome to you not dating them monogamously is Avarice who ends up dating his butler which I thought was a cute development . So it really makes the fact that the other monogamous one has nothing besides for some "feels like he has a crush and doesn't want to admit it" energy accentuate that after-thought feeling.

The story and writing itself was pretty good. The jokes were consistently funny throughout out and man is this game horny. They really showcased it in the ads, but it really doesn't prepare you for HOW horny the game can be. It's not a bad thing and leads to a lot of crude/vulgar jokes (and some borderline smut with the romances (; ) which I found funny but I know certain people would get tried of that humor quickly. I thought the ending was a little anti-climactic and the game leads you into the "not so great" ending without much explanation and really undoes a lot of character development by doing that. But you can just reload your game file and get the good ending right?

NOPE. That brings me to my biggest issue with this game. A Visual Novel/RPG/Dating Sim not having save slots is absolutely baffling. Want to see all the character interactions? Nope gotta replay the entire game to see that. There's this weird obsession with 'no re-dos" that the devs were really committed to. It would be one thing if it were a togglable option, but you're forced into accepting every decision you make, good or bad. This philosophy carries into the gameplay as well.

It's a tactics game with a simple rock, paper. scissors combat. While the gameplay itself is fine, it's easy enough but can be overly punishing on mistakes whether they be blunders or accidents. The whole "no re-dos" applies here too. Accidentally move your character to the wrong square? Gotta deal with it. Enemy got a random crit and killed your guy? Sucks to suck. Fail the challenge where you need to kill a unit with a certain unit but the enemy AI goes to attack a random character and gets counter-attacked by a different character and dies? Guess you'll have to do this battle over later.

While I'm not usually a fan of tactics games, it's relatively easy. A little too easy. While the bonus objectives can be tough, (a little frustrating at times if you really wanna get the mastery achievements) completing the battles is easy. The game starts adding in more challenge towards the end, but that's it. It felt like the game was gonna be longer and start ramping up the difficulty but you get to the end and the final boss is a pushover and the game is over.

There's also a handful of bugs that really hamper enjoyment. Sometimes character dialogue is so quiet that you can barely hear it, dialogue gets randomly cut off, or the dialogue doesn't match up with what's being said. I enjoyed most of this game with the dialogue on auto-play and almost every time a " . . . " dialogue came up it wouldn't auto play and I would have to click it and that would sometimes also skip the upcoming dialogue too. Which there's a conversation log now (which wasn't there on launch) so that has alleviated that issue a bit but is still annoying. They've been releasing a lot of post-launch patches, so hopefully a lot of these will be fixed.

So often single player and especially tactical RPGs can feel like a grind as I min/max, save scum, and grid sweep my way through every possible feature of the game. Right from the start, it's clear this is not an option due to the time mechanic.

Pick your lane, make your choices, and enjoy the ride!! I'm loving taking the YOLO approach and not worrying about my what-ifs.

The voice acting is unbelievable and keeps me laughing throughout the camp interactions. I NEED MORE JAZZ!!

To those reviews complaining about getting stuck because of selecting a hard difficulty and then squandering all of their time trying to romance 5 companions instead of building their character - maybe consider turning down the difficulty (possible whenever you want) and playing for the feelz. You can always turn it back up once you've rebuilt your characters appropriately.
