\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tEx Sanguis is something of a spiritual successor to Othercide which is, hopefully, still in the very early stages of development. As such, frankly, if you have not played Othercide, YOU SHOULD PLAY THAT FIRST. Othercide was a completed game, and, in my opinion, a piece of art.
Ex Sanguis is an iteration on that model. They are trying to fix a few things, such as removing some of the more degenerate combinations, while adding new content and making sure it doesn't feel like the same game too much. And, honestly, I think they are "cooking". The abilities after each level up make for a very rogue like feel. The very quick turn over of "runs" (memories) makes it very quick to try something new, rather than dragging on. The new hero roles fit nicely into each other.
Frankly, one of my biggest complaints is that the game is a bit too easy, and by that I mean not punishing enough. Othercide combat was all about meticulously planning out what the enemy was going to do and then perfectly countering that without getting hit. In Ex Sanguis, damage isn't permanent, and you can see what move an enemy plans to use next turn. Frankly, this makes the game more accessible for people, I suspect, and from everyone I've heard who played Othercide that's a good thing. So what I dislike is GOOD for everyone else.
Now, my last tidbit at the end. I am leaving a positive review as in CONTEXT. I do NOT reccomend this to someone who hasn't played Othercide and isn't gnawing at the bit. The Story telling isn't there yet. The epic boss music that sent chills down my spine from Othercide isn't there yet. The enemy variety and models isn't there yet. Heck, as others have pointed out, the interface isn't even all there yet. This is a VERY early access version of the game which I am having a blast playing, but it IS NOT (hopefully) representative of the final product. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThe game is not half bad considering it is in early access. I am a very big fan of Othercide but I could not help feeling like the story has the similar plot. I am hoping it is a twist and is in the same universe as Othercide.
My big gripe or gripes with this game is the combat feels extremely one sided and starting a new memory run is more tedious than anything else. Unlike Othercide where you could return units, skip bosses you have beat etc. Ex Sanguis makes you go through the slog over and over again and all of the fights are not fun. In it's current state I would not recommend buying it unless it is on a discount, you really enjoy combat that pretty one sided, or you do not mind a slog to unlock a boss fight that turns out to be really simple. Unlike othercide, the bosses are extremely easy to beat and feel anti climax when you have killed them.
The lead up to the boss fights frustrating to say the least. Even with combat sped up you are essentially trying to destroy a single objective with enemies that are never ending or you have to run around the entire arena to kill 3 or 4 targets. In my opinion neither of these are that satisfying to play to gain the corrupted blood resource cap needed to fight the bosses.
A regular arena battle tends to start pretty simple and essentially turns into a race against the clock.
The enemies have reloading reactions which means they never run out of them and they can be pretty oppressive. There is one enemy that has a massive range in a line and can snipe one of your stella if you attack their ally. Normally this is perfectly okay, however this enemy was well over around 10 to 15 squares away.
There is another support enemy called serapheim which also has a reload ability that steals 15ap from your stellae for each action they take. These small lack of balances within this game make hard to want to continue to play as these enemies feel like they have no restrictions and for you as a player to have a "big" turn you actively have to plan out with all 3 or your pieces. The issues with enemies reactions is a balance issue and there is not feedback button to actively give developers.
While I am actively frustrated at the balance of the game I understand that it is in early access and look forward to the patch notes.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tVery similar to Othercide: it's a turn-based tactics game where actions take place on a timeline, all your attacks always hit, and you have all the information to figure out how enemies will move, so it becomes a "damage Tetris" puzzle of positioning and doing the right attacks in the right order. Unlike Othercide, your characters heal up between each battle, but runs tend to be much shorter. Every battle has a selectable difficulty, where the easiest setting gives the least rewards and feels much easier than Othercide.

However if you have played Othercide, there is a sense that the developers have not done enough to differentiate itself. I'm hopeful that given time this game will be a meaningful step forward from Othercide. For the price you will certainly get your money's worth and this is one of the few games that makes you stop and really think about your moves which I really appreciate.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

As an Othercide player, it took a couple of hours to appreaciate. My first reaction was meh β very similar to Othercide, but changed in ways that lost what made the original so unique. But after persevering Iβm seeing all the changes as a positive.
ο\tBattle babes fully heal after each fight.
ο\tGame is much more fast paced, single missions take 3 to 15 mins max. ( Unlike othercide where a mission could take literally hours, at least if youβre like me & refuse to let any of your babes die or sacrifice them to hell.)
ο\tThe way the game divides itself into runs, each with about 8 battles where the babes get a choice of random skills after each mission, helps replay ability & gives you an ongoing fun cycle powering up your team.
ο\tStorytelling is more convention, and while still appealing dark, isnβt dark to the excessive degree that othercide was (the suffering child etc.)
Game feels fully polished, but content can be completed in less than 5 hours if youre a tactics veteran, so very early access in that sense. Currently the game lets you play each battle on easy difficulty if you like, and you can retry as many times as you like. This might be a sensible default setting, but for me the biggest improvement the game needs is a difficulty with some kind of doom clock that pushes you to perform. Iβm probably going to replay at least 50 hours even with the content we have right now, and Iβd guess more than 500 hours once this is complete. Am expecting a master piece here boys!

Every step of the way game provides you with meaningful choices to tailor your experience.
I like how easily you can change the difficulty and "power" of your party.
There are 3 major resources available to you during the run: memories (how many fights left in the current run), blood (gained in encounters, needed to meet certain thresholds to enter boss battles) and how many abilities/traits your party gained so far.
All of these resources are easily interchangeable during the run.
Feeling underpowered? You can usually find an event on the map to gain one memory for some blood and get an additional fight to level up your party. Party already got everything you need? Same event, but you can choose to lose one memory to gain blood and get to the boss threshold faster.
Another positive aspect - you can change the difficulty of each separate fight. For example, if I am in a bad place and don't have the abilities I think I need, I can stick to doing encounters on easiest difficulty to grab upgrades and then I can hit the boss on a maximum difficulty.
During battles you also have more freedom. In Othercide using the most powerful skills too frequently could damage your chances of an overall victory, so to not run out of HP you had to reserve those for the most important battles. Here you have no such limitations, feel free to use whatever ability combinations you want at any point.
That's why the game feels a lot more dynamic and faster than Othercide.
Changing your game loop from long campaigns to shorter runs can be a daunting task (looking at you, Darkest Dungeon 2) and so far it looks like devs handled the transfer better.
Ex Sanguis feels on par with Othercide, both visually and gameplay-wise to attract fans of the original game and at same time less daunting to interest new players.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tAfter burning through Othercide last winter, and signing up for Ex Sanguis's playtests, I'm happy to say Ex Sanguis is shaping up to be a good iteration (crucially, not a sequel) of what the devs established in Othercide.
Firstly and least suprisingly, they nailed the style and vibes in Ex Sanguis. Its striking aesthetics are matched well with the combat music to drive home the brutal tension of a mission slowly spiraling out of control. Unlike Othercide, which very much felt like "let's put everything we think is cool into the character and class designs, Ex Sanguis feels far more like their own unique and cohesive vision. Since its early access, I'll cut them some slack for the lack of visual customization at launch.
Secondly, where the game differs most from Othercide is the player's relation with vitality and death. In Othercide, you were made to navigate unit permadeath and your non-standard attacking skills costing your health, where the simplest tactical failures could doom both the mission and the likelihood you'd finish the chapter you're in. You could use resources for more units, but until you collect more bonuses to persist between runs, their effectiveness waned the further you went. Ex Sanguis's combat can be similarly punishing, but your skills no longer cost health and unit death is never permanent.
Rather than suffer any pyrrhic victories, mission success grants roguelike upgrades for each unit, resources required to challenge a boss, and resources that carry over between runs. The resulting changes encourages continuing play even when you don't have enough reach the boss. Where I think this loop may disappoint or lose players is the disparity in unit strength, and how skill/strategy complexity is gated behind the between-run skill tree. A fresh save leaves you with fairly weak melee units and not much to manage outside of bleed and time effects. Othercide took time to get rolling, too, but asking players to get used to death and continuing despite suboptimal play could lead to a player thinking the game is both β₯β₯β₯β₯β₯β₯β₯β₯ *and* boring.
Altogether, I'm excited for the game's future. It has the same "want to keep playing despite getting my ass beat" feeling of Othercide, and for that alone I'll stick with it.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
