\n\t\t\t\t\tAs a player that has been playing this series since the first game during the closed beta back in 2019, this sequel is amazing and a huge step up from the first game. First thing first, the game runs buttery smooth on my RTX 5080, literal no stutters or issues at all. The main selling point with this game is the newly inclusion of fully flying birds and aquariums. We begged for YEARS (since 2019 when the first game released) for this, and they completely blew my expectations out the water. The animations for each animal are amazing, the water effects and weather are amazing as well. This game is much easier to get into for new players, I know with the first game a lot people said it was very confusing to get a hold of controls, I never had that problem but I could see where people were coming from. The only complain I have with this game is the animal roster, now it is not bad by any means, but some animals were cut from the first game, iconic animals that literally are staples for being in zoo games, an example I can give is that they cut the cheetah, why?, I have no idea, literally an iconic animal in zoo games. My hope is that they add missing species that were in the first game via free monthly updates like they do for Jurassic World Evolution 3. PLEASE do not make us pay for animals that were in the base game of the first. This game is off to a strong start and I can't wait to see what is in store for the DLC.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tAlmost had 1k hours in the first game, spent a huge amount of time on it, bought every DLC except the last. Obviously, I preordered the second, which is the first preorder I've purchased in years. So, with all that said, what do I think based off of first impressions?

Oh, Frontier. You should've let this bake in the oven for another year, bud.

There's a lot so far that I'm either confused by, or view entirely as a negative. One of the first things I did was open up maps to see what they looked like, how much building space they had, etc. While some are an acceptable size, some are astoundingly tiny. As an example, the tropical Asia map? Yeah... it's a beach that's not even wide enough to have a proper lemur enclosure on, and a cliff that may fit one medium enclosure, and that's it! Who made this? How did this get past an entire dev team as acceptable? Who play tested this and said, "Hmmm, seems like the proper size for a zoo!" Like y'all can't be serious? It's far from the only map that suffers from this too.

Outside of sizing issues, there's also the issue of... copied maps? I don't even know what to call them. I pick the NA grassland map for my first "serious" zoo. I load in. It's clearly Africa. It has African species of trees, African vibe for an entrance, and I raise an eyebrow. "Maybe I picked the wrong one and didn't notice...?" So I go back to the main menu. "North American Grassland" it reads. Um. Okay? So I click through the grassland maps... y'all, why do they all have a borderline identical mountain, and same species of trees, but apparently are continents apart? Did y'all give up creating these maps? AI? Bug? What is going on?

"So is it just the maps that are messed up...?" I imagine you're asking. No, dear reader. It's much worse. If you've been following content creators, you may have noticed animals absolutely glitching out while flying or climbing. Every time, they'd happily proclaim, "Oh, it's a beta build! It's a beta!" Well, it's launch day, no longer a beta, and supposedly it's a "finished" game. Do you think that these issues magically vanished? Because they didn't. Somehow, climbing is even worse than the first game, just with some "prettier" (and buggier) animations going on. Which probably explains why this game is launching with so few species of monkey?

Speaking of missing animals, woo boy... it's noticeable. Before you pull out your katana in defense of your favorite video game studio, let's be reasonable. I have no problem buying DLCs, clearly. But what I do have a problem with? Waiting anywhere between 3 months to 4+ years to see iconic species *return* and have to rebuy them. This isn't even including new species. We're now going to be expecting the inclusion of birds and aquatics regularly. How on earth are they going to add: returning species, new habitat species, new exhibits, new aquatics, new birds, and then add onto our scenery, reserves, etc?
Like we're launching with almost no NA species, almost no SA species, almost no Oceania species... easy inclusions that wouldn't have broken their bank or hurt future DLC sales, such as the cheetah, kangroo, peafowl? They're not here.

And speaking of reserves, they bragged about having plenty of them, and they do. But realistically, we have two. What do I mean by this? Well, there's European ones and African ones, and every single one in those selections have pretty much matching animals. It's baffling, because some species really don't fit in the reserves they're shoved into, and then there's glaring holes where species should be in the food chain, but they simply don't exist.

Some of the animals use old rigs, or borrow rigs from other species, which yes, is normal and saves time, but there's very clear broken animations in some.

No side scrolling, unless there's some hidden option that I'm just missing?
They've somehow made building staff buildings more of a pain?
There's buildings and entrances that you can't delete, or some that you can delete 75% of and then there will be a random piece of fence that's not able to deleted or moved?

I loved PZ1, I want to love this, and before anybody goes, "Errrmmm, you posted an early review but then you played 20 more hours!?" Can't refund it now, and yes, I'm going to test it more. But to anybody who hasn't bought it, I would suggest waiting.\t\t\t\t\t

The gameplay changes added to the game like aquariums, exhibits, better pathing, brush tools and more are incredibly good and make the experience easier and much better. Overall the game has a better starting mechanic wise than planet zoo 1.
- Birds and Fish
- Most animals have way better models and animations as well though for some there is problems.
- Exhibits are actually good and customizable
- Pathing is just so much better
- Building is so much easier with brushes and terrain tools as well.
- FPS for the most part runs really smoothly
- The few reserves that we have are cool.
Bad:
1. The roster is incredibly shallow with limited birds and entire continents of animals missing. Probably so frontier can resell animals and sell essential animals back again. There also is weird choices in birds and other specific animals. No cheetah, peafowl, capybara, red kangaroo, alligator and jaguar is insane. Also no red bellied piranhas and scarlet macaws when we got birds and fish is insane as well.
2. Many lazy usages of rigs and so many bugs related to them such as the tamarin using the lemur rig, tapir using the old warthog rig, bittern using the shoebill rig and zebra shark using the sand tiger shark rig. While rig sharing is normals all of these animals look odd and sometimes break with it. Making it appear clear this is lazy rig sharing.
3. Franchise mode is broken at this point and challenge mode is basically dead.
4. Most animals can’t use reserves and reserves are incredibly limited to the old world. Also 3 are in Europe and are essentially the same. It is funny the two headliner animals the Toucan and Sea Turtle don’t have one. Also no aquatic one is insane.
5. There are so many visual bugs as well it is insane. Sometimes animals randomly become smooth.
6. Many exhibit animal models are still old PZ1 ones and are low quality. So is the Indo-Pacific sergeant fish.

Conclusion:
While I like the features of this game and wish I could give it a higher review. At this moment I am not recommending this game for players until stuff get’s reworked and fixed. Hopefully frontier patches up the roster with free updates though probably dlc, does touch ups to animals, and redoes the rigs of animals. I do not hate what frontier is done as they gave us birds and fish, but want actual standards to be put into their games forward especially quality and content wise.

\n\t\t\t\t\tThe game has not blown my socks off, nor am I disappointed - I've played PZ1, and I've been an Elite Dangerous player long enough to generally trust Frontier to sort out all my gripes eventually. They make good games. I actually would recommend the game in it's current state to a select group of players - Sandbox players, or people who like to take things very slowly and don't get annoyed by much. The only reason I'm even bothering to leave this review is because, while the game is a very fair price, we're still in a cost of living crisis, and £40 is a lot of money for a game that you may not enjoy.

If you are concerned with graphics, please note that the game may not automatically detect the correct resolution, and "Ultra" does not give you the highest possible graphics settings. Many things will be set to "high" that can still be increased to "very high." The game might look bad when you launch it - that does not mean that the graphics are actually bad. Figure out your own ideal settings.

If you like the management side of PZ, I would honestly give it a couple weeks for them to sort the UI out. They have introduced a lot of friction to elements of the UI that simply did not exist in PZ1. A good example of this is in changing the prices of items in your shops - before, you clicked on the shop, and there was an obviously-editable text field for the price of each item. Click shop, click field, type price - done. Now, you click the shop, you click a cog next to the item, a popup opens in a different area of the screen, and the text field, while editable, does not have the typical UI trappings that identify it as such. You either use the arrows, or type your new price in, then close the popup for that item, and have to press the cog (back on a different part of the screen again) to open a new popup for the next item (and now we're in the middle of the screen again. Just, why?) This is just one example of really frustrating UI design across the entire game - it is not, unfortunately, the only example.

These are frustrating issues, but easily solvable on Frontier's end. I do think this is a symptom of engaging *too much* with the content creators, and asking themselves "what do the content creators do, that average players DON'T?" without also asking "what DON'T the content creators do, that the average players DO?"

If you play Career or Sandbox and don't touch Franchise mode, my review effectively ends here. Read no further, go forth and enjoy the game.

For the Franchise players, however, I cannot in good faith recommend the game in it's current state. I open a Tropical Asian zoo. I try to get my hands on one (1) single animal - it's launch day, so there are none, other than those with a minimum-accreditation rating that I do not meet, as a brand new zoo. Fair enough, Franchise is an online mode, I'm sure this will be the absolute peak in terms of the number of players online.

Eventually, animals start appearing slowly but surely every few minutes as I repeatedly refresh the trading menu - African Grassland animals, almost exclusively. Fine, I'll grab those for now, and stick them in my zoo. I refresh the trading menu for a further two hours - African Grassland animals (warthogs and meerkats, specifically - nothing else!) remain my only option.

I decide to soldier on and just research the animals. I then learn that I can't actually research them past the first level or two until I've opened an African Grassland nature reserve. Annoying, but y'know, sure, why not. I also can't continue researching them until I've managed to release ones that I've bred in my zoo. Starting to get really annoying. As I wait for my animals to breed, I start researching enrichment items. This is another UI hellscape with a wildly unnecessary amount of clicking involved. At this point, two and a half hours in, with only two animal options open to me, with a significant amount of time spent on max speed, I still do not have an animal of either species to send off into the world - assumedly because they're not thriving, because I haven't researched them. Holy feedback loop, Batman.

These are fairly sizeable gripes, but I'm sure that they will be dealt with, and I will absolutely be updating this review the moment that they are. For now, though, I will genuinely probably be returning to PZ1 for a couple weeks.\t\t\t\t\t

Sometimes, All You Need Is a Game That Makes You Happy

The first game is one of my most played games on Steam, and I've spent countless hours building zoos and creating habitats. There's something special about a game that makes you forget about the world for a while and just be happy doing what you love. These are the games that remind me why I fell in love with gaming in the first place, and honestly, there's nothing quite like that feeling

Planet Zoo 2 builds on that foundation with even more ways to bring your dream zoo to life. The expanded animal roster, aquatic exhibits, aviaries, and new building possibilities give you even more creative freedom, while the deeper focus on animal welfare and conservation makes managing your zoo feel rewarding beyond just keeping guests happy. The best part is that you can approach everything at your own pace. Whether you want to create a massive, meticulously designed wildlife park or spend an entire evening perfecting a single habitat, there's no wrong way to play.

Performance has been great for me so far. The game runs smoothly, and it's clear that a lot of work has gone into optimizing it for modern hardware. No major issues on my end, which makes spending hours building my dream zoo that much better.

For me, games like this are a reminder of why I fell in love with gaming in the first place. Not everything needs to be competitive, stressful, or packed with action. Sometimes, you just want to build something beautiful, watch it come to life, and lose yourself in your own little world. If you loved the original Planet Zoo, this sequel has so much potential to keep you coming back for hundreds of hours all over again.

I wanted to love this game so much, but launching a sequel in this state after 3 years in development is honestly inexcusable. Planet Zoo 1 was amazing, but Planet Zoo 2 feels like a massive step backward in terms of basic polish and usability.

Let’s talk about the bugs. I am running this on the highest settings, and yet the engine is so broken that ALL the flowers I place completely lose their flower heads. They are literally just ugly, poorly rendered stalks and leaves because the game's asset rendering is panicking under the hood. The animal pathing is totally busted too—primates are constantly clipping straight through trees and climbing structures.

Worse than the bugs is the new UI. It is terrible compared to the first game. The menus feel like they were lazily copied from a console interface. The asset icons in the foliage and build menus are so tiny, washed out, and low-res that you can barely even tell what item you are looking at until you place it on the ground.

Frontier clearly rushed this out the door to meet a corporate deadline, splitting their focus to launch on PC and consoles at the same time.

The result is a game that feels completely unpolished.

For a full-price sequel from an established studio, we shouldn't have to wait months for patches just to make flowers render and menus readable.

As it is right now after launching I would not recommend it and say Don't buy it yet even as an avid planet zoo fan.

Sadly it is a complete bug-fest, franchise is unplayable, animals get boxed constantly, tools are not working as intended. And while the animals look very good, the game overall manages to look underwhelming and flat in comparison to PZ1, due to dull weather effects and bad lighting. \n\t\t\t\t\tFeels like half of what a Planet Zoo 2 should have been. The gameplay is largely the same with the biggest improvements being with path building, terraforming, and aviaries/aquariums. The changes to the building system aren't well implemented and are finicky to use. The species list is lacking with a decrease to only 57 terrestrial habitat animals on launch and, as I will get to in my next issue, not enough New World representation. There are two giraffes, two wildebeest, a bunch of antelope, but only one monkey, if you buy the extra pack it comes in. The game feels like its missing the Americas, Australia, the Arctic, and Antarctic, while also leaving out Old World classics like peafowl and cheetahs. I hope that the glaring hole in the species list is not fixed through DLC. This feels more like a DLC to Planet Zoo than it does a standalone title especially with the jarring transition from over 200 species, mostly terrestrial or amphibian, to 136 species, mostly small fish. I really want this game to be better than what we got, but in its current state this game is not better than modded Planet Zoo.\t\t\t\t\t

The roster is "fine", too many exhibit animals for my taste and I wish they would have added animals from every continents in the base game to have a complete zoo, but we know how their DLCs work so let's not pretend it's not on purpose, still we have plenty of animals from a few continents so it'll give me time to start my franchise either way before the first few DLCs.

It's broken and have alot of unfinished problems.

Aquatic animals swiming next to the aquariums. Animals boxing and unboxing in infinity. Stats on habitats are more than perfects but still the animal don't have enough space (even if space is 800/300 bigger).

You can not click on suitable species in the zoopedia to easy get to that animal (even if the button is clickable) sometimes it sends you to a totally different animal and sometimes no reaction at all.

Much much more problems but those are some of the problems that make me feel like people should wait with the buying.

Perfomance wise i don’t have any problems, game runs smoothly without any stutters.

The animals look amazing, and I love how much freedom you have. The addition of aquatic and flying animals is something I've wanted for ages, and it's great to finally see them included.

The animal roster is okay-ish, nothing a few DLC’s can’t fix haha.

In my opinion it’s well made sequal with cool additions. Looking forward to seeing where the game goes!

Bugs
- "Guests are fleeing from animals" despite no escapes (requires restart).
- Keeper stuck and spinning in aquarium (requires restart).
- Small animals consistently get stuck in burrows and are returned to the gate in a crate.
- Staff facilities appear to connect to paths when placing them, but they actually don't until you delete and remake their paths.
- UI and/or text scaling doesn't impact the giant barrier controls that block you from clicking on the barrier pillars.
- Guests get stuck in path vertices (just like around pools in PC2, but no one builds pools in PC2 anymore - unfortunately, habitats are basically pools).
- Reserve nature brushes sometimes bug and deleting a single bush deletes all plants in the biome. No way to fix as far as I can tell. You can undo it, but if you want to delete that bush, you just have to redo everything.

Annoyances
- Enrichment research isn't searchable. Thankfully you only have to do it once.
- Paths are wider yet pathfinding is somehow worse and human clumps are everywhere.
- Shop prices can't be adjusted without bringing up a pop-up menu for every single item.
- UI is pretty but quite a big step back in functionality.
- 40 fps out of the gate w/ a 5080.
- No pre-made shelters apart from burrows unless I'm missing it?? Maybe they get unlocked later in career mode? There's no research for this, right?

I've been an avid fan of PZ1 since launch and I've been eagerly waiting for PZ2's release.
The initial 10 minutes of the game filled me with tears, as I explored the starter Wildlife Reserve. Sudenly, I was a kid again, that kid with dreams of becoming a vet or an animal behavourist, of exploring the world and learning about it's fauna.
If you care about wildlife and nature conservation, this game is lovely and touching in a way not many games of the genre have managed to capture.

Even having played the original PZ and being well aware of the passion and care the dev team puts into their work, I was still genuinely surprised by the inital presentation and the amount of new options it offers. It's so much of what we all have dreamed when playing PZ1 and then some more. Everything that was great in PZ1, has been kept and improved upon, while the things that weren't so great have been scrapped or overhauled. Between all the quality of life improvments to building and managment, alongside the new features and systems, I'm almost (positively) overwhelmed with how much there is to do.

And of course...the new animal types:
Not only we get the beautiful wildlife reserves and the new gameplay (and message) that comes with them, we get marine animals AND flying animals with all the new aspects of habitat building that come with them.
Had this been a greedier company, these things would probably have been separate and sold to us as extentions to the game, which would have launched only as a revamp + wildlife reserves.
Instead, we get all of this at launch. I have a lot of trust in these devs, since they have proven time and time again that what they create, is nothing short of a labour of love and dedication.

As for performance, my pc does not meet all of the recommended specs (its between minimum and recommended specs) and everything so far as been quite smooth. And even if it wasn't...once again, big trust on the dev team <3

I can't wait to put some good amount of hours into the game, be creative, build a lot, give these pixel animals the best lives i possibly can and lose myself watching the worlds come to live.
Love to Frontier, thank you for making many of our childhood dreams come true, in a way.

\n\t\t\t\t\tDisastrously bad launch, feels like this was very poorly playtested before release. A few examples:

• I spent the first half an hour flying around desperately looking for the zoo's entrance, thinking I was blind and dumb and I was missing something. Turns out it's a bug: the Taiga - Sculpted map sometimes generates literally with no entrance. Great start!
• There are nearly no available animals to start off with in Franchise mode, it's so limiting that it can functionally prevent you to play for a while, and variety in some biomes is really limited.
• Either the UI is a disaster or the game lacks a whole lot of essential things: where's the simple "Exhibit" for small land animals? An empty one I can then customize, without it starting off themed in a specific way? So unintuitive.
• given my more than decent specs it wasn't a big deal for me, but in order to get a smooth 100 FPS I had to set DLSS to balanced and turn off a bunch of things. Stuff I don't need to do even while running the most graphically intensive stuff out there. So unless you have a powerful rig, expect a stuttery experience.

I suspect waiting a year or so would have been a better idea, because this is an unfinished mess right now, with a lot of potential and clearly a huge improvement over the awesome predecessor, but still severely unfinished. Needs more time in the oven.\t\t\t\t\t
