Like some fans of the Brigandine series, I was initially unhappy with the big changes to the game's mechanics, some of which seemingly go against the core of what the series is about. It didn't help that the demo showcased the more boring parts of the game (the starting mission on a super bland map, 30-FPS framerate) and as a result likely put off a good chunk of players.
But after deciding to give the game a chance (3 story mode and 2 mission mode playthroughs later), I realized that the developers did put in considerable thought when designing Abyss, and most of the major changes actually make sense in the context of the game (and not when compared to GE/Runersia). Examples:
- 24 factions, each having only 3 characters and just one city?! The story must be paper thin! --> the story is actually quite deep and each faction's characters are fleshed out significantly in their own campaigns. Each of the 6 primary factions essentially have 3 minor factions linked to them in their own mini-storyline, and as you play through each of them, the overall story/plot starts to make more sense as the game's 'atlas' (records) gets filled up. Many factions actually have IMO interesting intertwining plots, unlike Runersia or GE.
- Enemies that auto level up as the seasons progress? Thats so difficult to deal with right? --> On paper yes, but this is balanced out by the game making it very cheap/easy to resurrect monsters (who retain their levels), so no more stressing over making sure your upgraded monsters stay alive every fight. This opens up viable sacrifice/trade tactics as well, which you will sometimes need to employ. I find these changes way more fun than the usual snowballing that occurs in the previous games. EXP gained from questing also scales (up to a certain point) with no. of seasons passed, so getting a late-joining Rune Knight or monster up to speed is no longer a grindy process. And the AI is still very Brigandine i.e. stupid, so the usual cheese tactics still work.
- Class trees have been trimmed and most of them are now linear?! They removed multi-classing?! Boring! --> Perhaps, but the classes in Abyss are MUCH better tuned (balanced) compared to the previous games, so there's less incentive to multiclass. Almost every class from my personal experience is viable at every tier. And the introduction of spell/ability levelling (they get stronger the more you use them) adds a new layer of strategy.
Make no mistake however, some changes are very subjective and you'll either like or hate them e.g. the art style (I found it a slight downgrade overall), soundtrack (unique tracks for each of the 24 factions, but nothing noteworthy), a smaller continent map and the use of generic knights, but mostly for questing.

This is a shallow representation of all preceding Brigandine games that came before. Story is meh at best, freedom of choice is reduced, and the AI is ridiculously stupid and predictable. AI gains more levels per turn than you could on the best fighting turns and so creates a clock to you having to rush everything, cheese fights, or get overpowered by the AI. Seriously, an updated relaunch of the PS1 Brigandine would have done leagues better.
I don't know the story or why, but were I a dev that produced a worse game than something made 28 years ago, I'd feel really sad. I paid full price for the game... and it's the most disappointing game purchase I've made in the last decade. Go play Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia. That's right, Our of all my favorite franchises, only one is a regular RPG franchise. The rest are tactics/strategy games. So one would THINK I would love this new addition to my second favorite series of all time. And I was very hyped for it. Even after the demo I was still hyped. But this game has some serous problems with it that set it not only apart, but way back from its two preceding titles which, imo, blow it out of the water.
I don't mind the graphics. They are hit and miss, but they do the job. I've seen people complain about the anime art style, but Brigandine has ALWAYS had an anime art style. Still, the style of the first game, imo, was superior... And I wish they would have kept the separate 3 D battle scenes. In the original game the only problem was their load times...But people liked them nonetheless and turned them off because the loading took too long NOT because they didn't want 3 d battle scenes.
I also like the larger map, and the map envirorments are nice too. Very large and more intense and intimidating in encounters. The art style here is spot on. Music is very good as well. Not great, but good. As a musician myself, my advice to them is just this- Make the music make you FEEL something from it before adding it. Don't just come up with melodies that sound nice, they have to evoke empathy from the player. And the battle music should make you feel pumped up, like your ready to take on the world. This music doesn't do any of that- Its just nice background ambience.
Building up the base- EXCELLENT addition to the series. THIS is a step in the right direction!
But the bad outweighs the good. The BIGGEST problem is that this is just a bunch of challenge modes. If you want to play old-style paint the map Brigandine (Which is what 90 percent of players probably climbed aboard to do) you are SOL unless you play certain characters (I think there are maybe 2 that get this feature). The rest of the 24 all have challenge conditions you can't turn off such as collecting gold, clearing with only your starting lords, clearing with only healing monsters ect. Challenge stuff is supposed to come AFTER we spend months getting burned out on conquest as a way to test ourselves after we have played the game through and through....Who thought it would be a good idea to make THAT the core gameplay for all but 2 factions?
Also, we in the west don't get as much out of story mode because its not in English. Maybe if it had english voice actors we could connect more to their emotion and the story, but this isn't the early 2000s when American voice actors were so terrible we preferred the foreign track. There is some real VA talent in the west. Please use them if your going to make half the game story heavy. I'm surprised your marketing team hasn't showed them how poorly untranslated voice acted games have done in the west in the past decade or so. We have heard some of your fantastic stories done great in our language, and we now prefer it that way.
Multiclassing is gone, which was always a favorite for people who liked making unique builds. And like the monsters, it feels like there are less things to work with in building your character. Something else that should have expanded and not been reduced.
It also feels like there are less monster types than before. Maybe its because your starting cities only have 3 choices (Even your capitol) when before you could pick from a variety. I haven't counted but it FEELS way less. Especially since several of my favorites are missing (WHERES MY HYDRA!!! WHERES MY KILLER PLANT!!! WHY DO ONLY DRAGONS AND FIGHTERS HAVE BRANCHING PATHS NOW???).
How they could make this or any brigandine game a beloved success?
ADD conquest mode.
ADD MORE monsters- Never less. There is NO SUCH THING as too much or too many in a SRPG. You always want to go bigger- never smaller.
The mercenary idea is nice, but players HATE "clone" leaders. I'm sure you have gotten complaints about this. Either add a way to make them more "customized" graphically or make them "randomly generated and unique". I've seen a similar thing done before. Clone monsters is one thing, but cloned humanoid leaders breaks immersion.
REMOVE most of those caps! Don't limit how your players play the game. Let people play as they choose. Let them be as big or small a roster as they want, and let them play as short or as long as they want in conquest. Time limits are a bad design choice to artificially boost difficulty. All they tend to do is frustrate most players to move on to something that is actually fun. Get rid of them, and BE the fun game they run TOO, not away from!
Come on Happinet. I've seen your potential with Runersia. You can make Brigandine one of the great series of our age. All you have to do, is listen to your players and make it happen! I didn't seek a refund on this game because I want to support your efforts in bringing Brigandine back. But bring it back RIGHT! I know you all can do it!
As for everyone else, for the time being I ONLY recommend getting this if challenge mode was your favorite part of runersia. If your favorite thing was world conquest mode (And it probably was) your in for dissapointment here. I hope that changes.....If they ever add conquest mode and a handful more monsters. There are many aspects of the game that has changed for example completely taking out the rune knight area was a big game changer and allowed many new strategies but also eliminated old Brigandine strategies of pushing rune knights to the edge until their OP monster was out of their area. But now you can totally send your rocs through ZOC blockades and obliterate the unprotected mages and healers in the back.
The monster balance has been redone to make players actually use the monsters provided such as the golem which used to just be a HP fodder for the DPS to area magic the enemy damage dealers and really castle forward. But now the golems actually deal damage with high accuracy and even mages actually can do some damage.
Being able to buy equipment now is truly great! You don't can elevate your monster and knight's stats from the beginning and have an advantage over the enemy's automated leveling every turn.
Initially the enemy being able to auto train, quest and attack at the same time was shocking but knowing the enemy can't level up during battle balances it out. Definitely forces you as a player to re-adapt your gameplay and try a super aggressive approach and challenge armies with higher levels eventually or turtle in to train and quest and fight more aggressive battles moving forward.
In conclusion Brigandine Abyss is a very fun game and many different scenarios and stories to play through. Highly highly highly recommended for new and old Brigandine players to experience Brigandine Abyss and play it. There is a lot to discover both new and old. I've already had some of the most memorable battles of the series in this game. Between the terrain, the awesome maps, the reworked element system, the unique character traits/abilities and many monsters who are knights, I don't think I'll go back to the old games (as good as they are).
I would recommend this to anyone if it is on sale.
At full price, I would recommend it to players who love combat, have some grit and don't mind learning through trial and error. It may be a while before there are some good guides.
My first 40+ hours were in the Scarlet Will story on hard mode. When I finally fought the empire around season 23 they f-ing bodied me so hard. I remember Heinbart hitting one of my best monsters for 777 damage- like he's playing Runersia or something! I rearmed, reorganized and tried again and suffered a less humiliating but total defeat. SO, what I learned was that I didn't know how to play the game. I was winning on the battlefield but I had lost in the organization phase and was unprepared. I about got my money's worth in a losing effort and had a lot of fun doing it.
Now, I am playing on Normal. I had cleared the map of every possible node by like season 14 and am using the rest of the time to gain gear, level up and create uber-monsters by exploiting the increased stat growth of tier 3 units by starting them at level 1. Oh, I can not wait to invade their last two cities...\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The demo...was scary.. it looked not so good and it was so hard to play and run the game.
The avalanche of negative reviews made me delay the purchase and started thinking of waiting longer for a sale maybe.
then, i remembered how i loved brigandine, GE, and runersia. and to make my own opinion. and bought it.
at first it was hard to play, installing new drivers figuring things out. since runersia i didnt play any other game.
now i m finishing my second Nation.
There are lots of classes .lots of monsters, lots of characters. ( yes we want all more. and 2 upgrades for each. ) i dont feel the need of mixing classes is necessary anymore, heroes have enough skills as they are
*Generic mercs are a very nice addition for questing, i barely used them in combat tho , i have way enough heroes and still want more hahaha
*Quests are made better and easier. it takes a bit of time to learn the proficency and where are which quest ( a guide will come out someday from the community i m sure)
*Base development are a plus. its nice some bonus are just cool, some .. useless to me for now but the development and access to new quest is brilliant idea . ( there are tons of brilliant ideas actually, many things are well thought )
overall . YES. this is brigandine. I dont share the negative reviews opnion.. there are way too many improvements to complain about a few misses i already forgot about. Many characters are nice, we even have a new pair of twins ( not Milla , Mira , rip) . I admit some characters lacks the charisma of first edition. but some other are here are badass.
the playgrounds are all diferent and visually nice. I got used to play with the new rules quite fast actually. the money system, upgrades , quests , XP evolution. this is VERY WELL plannified. really i think those who posted reviews after 2 hours or 15 hours of gameplay should change their recommendations because it kills the game, its rentability, its chance for a next episodes , DLC, upgrades etc... and i love this kind of game and system. its not fair for other players who actually can enjoy some changes and new rules. or maybe i dare say..improvements ( dont burn me hahaha)
totally worth it. i ll finish every nation at least 2 times and get through all story modes. I do want improvements but this is not a half cooked potatoe, this is a Bahamut !\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

At first, I thought the game was simply using a new system and that things would become more enjoyable once I got used to it. However, after playing it for a while, I found the overall experience quite disappointing and, honestly, not very enjoyable.
One of the biggest issues for me is the NPC progression. The way NPCs level up feels strange and unnatural. Their progression seems much faster than what I would normally expect, which makes the game feel unbalanced.
The overall system also feels unnecessarily complicated and unusual, especially the base system. It doesn't feel intuitive, and it changes the way character development works compared to what I expect from a Brigandine-style game.
In the traditional Brigandine experience, character and monster development is strongly connected to fighting and gaining experience through battles. In this game, however, leveling characters through actual battles feels very slow, while preparing and developing them during the preparation phase seems much more efficient.
Because of this, I feel like the character development system is not working as naturally as it should. It feels like the game is encouraging players to rely heavily on preparation rather than actually developing characters through combat. As a result, the progression doesn't feel satisfying, and sometimes it even feels like I'm taking a shortcut or "cheating" instead of properly building my characters through battles.
I really hope the developers can reconsider the balance between preparation and combat-based progression. The game would feel much more rewarding if character development, leveling, and combat progression were more closely connected, as they are in the traditional Brigandine experience.
I am sharing this feedback because I genuinely want the game to be more enjoyable and to retain the feeling of meaningful character progression that makes this type of game appealing.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tBrigandine abyss is an odd entry in the series, honestly Its a solid title that has a lot of core elements (humanoid units leading monsters, a focus on taking territory and expanding) but misses a few of the more fine details of the previous 2 games (abyss has a smaller map with a lot more factions, factions are generally equal in what they have, the enemy factions mostly scale up overtime rather than needing to build resources like the player does) that changes the pacing of the game a lot. I think I would enjoy a game that was more of a combination between the abyss's and the previous 2 games style in the future, the mission mode is neat, the new rally system is quite nice (although I would like it if command range was still in the game, maybe with some monsters being able to ignore it) and unique character abilities outside of faction leaders is neat, even if the balance of them is a bit all over the place\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

But I should not be soft locked on a final boss I can make it to in a game with so many monsters and customizations. The game was butchered by several dev contradictions.
Imagine if your playing FF7, you beat sephiroth and then he transform into Emerald Weapon. Without knowing just how broke the next form would be. With 10x the hp and 10x damage. They put a optional postgame boss as the final boss. And since this arcade style, there is no going back to go rebuild your team or get stronger.
1. The fairy kingdom is not about faeries.
I wanted to like this game. I picked the fairy kingdom, raised the monsters and characters the game gave me, learned its combat systems, and found ways to make my team work. But Apparently PIP and POP is some of the worst main units in the game? They dont even have a 2nd class change and no way to deal with final boss besides flat damage.
2. A terrible first impression
The very first real battle obscured the action with foreground trees. I could barely see what was happening. Looking for a way to change the battle camera and animations, I found those options buried under “Controls” rather than somewhere sensible like a "gameplay" tab. The opening battle also handed me a support-heavy fairy army against mobile enemy archers, before I had access to the usual army-management tools. This made the 1st fight the hardest winnable fight in the game, having to replace my kingdom faeries with starter generic commanders.
3. Objectives that do not communicate clearly
Win Condition:
Defeat all enemy units.
Lose Condition.
surviving 12 turns
What I am assuming is the game want me to defeat all enemies in 12 turns. But it states i can not lose by dying before 12 turns. This is also parted with the next dev contradiction.
4. Story and battle mechanics contradict each other
My character formed an alliance with another ruler in the story, only for that supposed ally to attack me during a required three-way battle. The Beast queen say we are now allies and we will fight together, Then her units charge my units in the battle and im fighting her as well as the enemy.
So when the game say defeat all enemies? Are they talking about this girl who just said she's my ally or just the people we are suppose to be fighting with together? Anyway she got in my way so i had to defeat everyone regardless.
5. The Final Boss
I fought my way through the enemy army and beat a mobile first-form boss with roughly 700 HP. My fairy mages dealt about 200-300 damage with Thunder, but could not move and cast in the same turn, so I used my dragons to surround him and prevent his escape. That was an actual tactical solution. Then, with no recovery or way to rebuild the party between phases, he transformed into a roughly 7,000-HP boss with enormous area attacks, knockback that scattered the dragons, and MP regeneration. I genuinely assumed the battle was a scripted defeat because the jump was so extreme. It was not scripted, It was Game Over.
This is my way of thinking while also being demolished at the same time
Turn 1: Hmm 7000 Hp, Units only have roughly 300-1000hp.
Maybe I'm not suppose to actually kill him but I'll still chip him down with sustain and entrapments.
Turn 2: He cast a 10 grid AOE knockback knocking my dragons off of him and killing my pixies
Hmm, okay I don't want to run into that again! Maybe i can send a few more pixies as sacrifice to drain his mana
Turn 3 and 4 he kill my pixies with his super big AOE
Turn 5: Okay he doesn't have mana now maybe i can beat take the remaining 6000hp he have
Turn 6: HE have Automatic mana regen so he can keep spamming his AOE explosion
me: Okay yeah you definably wasn't suppose to beat him
GAME OVER. Restart the battle or replay the entire game.
Me: Huh?
Verdict
Difficulty is fine. Experimentation is great. But punishing the player for a reasonable party they assembled 10 hours earlier—without a way to go back and change it—is poor design. Replayability should make me want to play another campaign, not force me to replay the same one, gathering specific units because the final boss have hidden requirements to answer.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

That said, it is still missing a fair amount compared to its progenitor. Quests are a bit too streamlined and no longer give flavorful story bits, battlefield interactions between knights seem almost nil and there's generally just a lot less meat on the story bones.
