-Due to the story mode limitations, I only had one option for territories to attack left, it belonged to an enemy faction that had an aggressive AI towards me and attacked me every turn because it "believed it was stronger than me".
-So I gathered my strongest forces in my base to attack them, but at the same time they of course attacked me as well, and due to the game's mechanics, because their overall power level was higher, their own attack was prioritized.
-I managed to fend off their attack and killed most of their units and all of their Rune Knights in that battle and then decided to attack again right in the next turn.
-But because of how this game works, all of their defeated Rune Knights are right back in action instead of being unavailable for 1 turn like in the other games, and they also replinished every single one of their defeated units, and also every single unit in their faction, Rune Knights included, gained a level for free.
-So I attack them again, and once again they attack me at the same time and once again the game gives them the priority, forcing me into a defensive battle.
-I managed to fend off their attack and killed most of their units and all of their Rune Knights in that battle and then decided to attack again right in the next turn.

Also, you can't invade any base. Some are locked by default until a plot happens. Meaning you will be fighting other kingdoms in the order that the devs wanted. If I want to take down the empire before any other nation, I should be able to have this opportunity. The previous games had no such railroading.

TLDR: Don't waste your time and money. If you want to try a Brigandine series for what it is, go for Runersia or find Forsena: Grand Edition. They are cheaper and more complete. Runersia is 21GB vs this 7GB.
I'm not going to diss the game entirely. It has its strong points.
Basically, new mechanics like Rally, Base Building, and able to buy equipment once they are found are good additions, but they are merely icing on the cake. It's not revolutionary or something to wow over.
The lack of personality persists throughout even in Mission Mode. There's no story, just a challenge for trophy purposes. It's just really sad to see potential wasted like that.
I have quite a lot to say about Brigandine Abyss as someone who has clocked many hours into both Forsena and Runersia. Runersia was already almost there with the gameplay, and I was sort of expecting better.
This, however, seems to be a downgrade in more places than one.
1. Storyline(s) & Personality
Storylines for each faction seem to have little or no relation to the main quest of Brigandine. Forsena had more intrigue and Runersia's story was more fleshed-out. The story isn't connected either. If you were playing Gran Dragnica, then other factions like Pandemyoun's story ceases to exist. They just become "another random faction" for you to conquer.
I suppose the time-gated Event Battles were supposed to add to the difficulty and to prevent turtling forever, but I feel a disconnect when an Event Battle occurs. Like the story only goes on during that time and the rest of the seasons are just "filler episodes" for you to level up. Empty and almost meaningless. Then to add salt to the wound, to get soft locked out of a main story cos you are underleveled is just sad game design.
Also, having only 3 "unique" knights per faction is sad on it's own already. They don't even have personality and become "just another unit" right after Season/Month 1. What happened to unique events and combat banter? You can now hire knights, but they are all generic copypastas, which brings me to my 2nd point.
2. Gameplay - Organisation Phase
40+ castles in Forsena/Runersia vs 28 now too, even the game world is shrinking!
Now, I think base upgrading and other resources is a good idea, but poorly executed. To have your important upgrades locked behind this mechanic while your AI opponents seem to ignore this is beyond me. They gave up working on their AI and the idea of difficulty is to cheat the hell out of you. That's lazy game development.
In order to "promote" this base building mechanic, they added the hiring of knights, adding 0 to personality, and much uselessness to micromanagement. For a game about strategy and combat, I seem to be spending way more time micromanaging my leaders and bases. Runersia had a very good balance for this. Back then, it was a good investment to strengthen your army, but missing it out occasionally won't make or break the game. Knights were also then a resource which you had to manage, to have them guard a castle, be a troop mule, or quest them. In Abyss, when more than half your army is working in a mine or foraging a swamp somewhere instead of fighting, you have a simulator, not a strategy/conquest game.
3. Gameplay - Knights/Leaders/Units
Ok sure, they gave us something to tinker with the bases, which is more of a chore than an actual upgrade at this point. Then they hit you by turning knights and classes into "just another unit". Back then, you could combine classes and turn your favourite waifu into a caster/healer hybrid, or your husbando into a Monk with extra Hit Rate from Samurai. Now, all leaders just follow a linear class progression. 0 customisation. Sure, they tried to give the unique leaders nice unique abilities that matched their story or class, but it ain't all that exciting either. The only beef I had with Runersia was actually their 3D models, and I can't believe Abyss brought the standard lower. Much of the art looks like it was made by AI rather than drawn, especially for the units. It is actually hard to watch and enjoy the game as it is given today's technology.
4. Gameplay - Combat
This is the most underwhelming part of the game. Combat is boring. Period. Attack, fight in a battlefield, rush the enemy leader, next.
Let's start with strategy. You can no longer do a pincer attack... Yup, you read that right for a
"strategy" game... If you attacked a castle from 2 sides, you can't even pick which side to face the enemy!
Each of the 28 maps are in a same format - attacker from 1 side, defender on the other, no matter which direction you are attacking from. Fancy maps, but boring. Previous Brigandine instalments would position you differently depending on where you launched your attack, and whether you would split your team. But no, regardless where you attack, it's always the same map and same start point. Camera angles are weird, controls are clunky, 3D models and obstacles are more eyesore than enjoyable. Also, a useless terrain height mechanic. If you want to make this Tactics Orge, do something with it. As of now, it serves no purpose other than providing a one-way route for your land units.
You can also no longer capture enemy creatures. They get to keep their overpowered, cheated lvl 20s while you are struggling with your lvl 10s, locked behind quest runs. You also cannot retreat individually. Retreat means a full loss. But hey, they also removed the Wounded status and the realism that comes along with it, replacing it with resurrection - by throwing Mel at the game. You no longer have to feel hurt about your lvl 20 seraph dying because you can simply revive it by paying money.
5. Controls & UI
They tried to keep the UI reminiscent of the old times, which is a good choice. But the whole UI design is basic with a basic font - likely AI generated again. Sadly, given the amount of micromangement you have to do in this game, the UI does not do very well to help you with it. You can't do page scrolls with left/right, so you have to go up or down 20-30 knights or 100 items until you find your item/unit. No sort/search functions either. Move/Select all is also weirdly bound.
Overall, I think the game tries too hard to reinvent itself. The game seems to remove features that made it a strategy game, and added more features that made it a simulator - making you rinse and repeat a process without much variation or thought. Things and features are disconnected and don't seem to have a proper flow or reason to belong, just there for the sake of. I am trying to like this game and I am giving both the game and myself a chance at it. But I cannot, with a good conscience, recommend this to anyone now.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Sadly, given the amount of micromangement you have to do in this game, the UI does not do very well to help you with it. You can't do page scrolls with left/right, so you have to go up or down 20-30 knights or 100 items until you find your item/unit. No sort/search functions either. Move/Select all is also weirdly bound.
Overall, I think the game tries too hard to reinvent itself. The game seems to remove features that made it a strategy game, and added more features that made it a simulator - making you rinse and repeat a process without much variation or thought. Things and features are disconnected and don't seem to have a proper flow or reason to belong, just there for the sake of. Wanna know the difference between the dwarf faction leader who is a legendary blacksmith trying to forge the Brigandine and a generic axe fighter unit? 25% physical defence if you have armor equipped... thats it, feels like they didnt played previous games or know of them at all!!!!!!
They added monster generals now, but they made them copies of the normal monsters, the lizardmen DONT HAVE ADVANTAGES ON SWAMPS OR RIVERS ETC, only the unique ones do but they still lose evasion like all the other units in the game, even aquatic units lose stats when in water tiles..
I hope they make mayor changes soon with feedback because frankly they killed the franchise, sucked the originality out of it with A.I portraits ( dont quote me on that one, not sure if they used A.I) and generic units that perform almost the same as the "unique" ones.
We waited for so long for another Brigandine game, hoping it would improve on Runersia in some direction... but no, we got a washed down unfinished game.
Please we neede more Brigandine, Happinet, Adglobe.. please play the previous titles, bring some ideas back, retouch the base building, dont limit the player this hard on every aspect, more customisation more map space, 1 castle per faction is INSANE, suffocating, add neutral ones..?

When I found out there was a second game, Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia, I was pretty excited. After playing it, I had a lot of fun with it. So when the newest release came out, I was really looking forward to it. But after around 5 hours of playing, and having already finished the campaign a few times, I’m honestly pretty disappointed compared to the second game.
Gameplay
The story mode feels pretty railroaded. There are several countries that you can't invade unless you trigger certain story events first. There are also stages that have to be cleared before you can progress to certain phases.
A lot of the systems from the previous games have been removed or completely reinvented. It feels like they tried to reinvent the wheel instead of improving what already worked.
Things like the monster capture system, commander-level-based turn order, multiclassing, and other mechanics were removed and replaced with new systems. On the surface, some of the new systems are okay, but once you actually play them, they feel pretty meh.
Characters
This is probably the biggest letdown for me.
Even though there are 16 countries, each country only has around three unique knights. Compared to the previous game, which had only six countries but a much larger roster of unique knights, the new system feels really empty.
During most of my playthroughs, the roster ends up being filled with random mercenaries, and honestly, they're pretty boring.
Another thing that bothers me is that almost every character starts at level 1, except for some special characters like the final boss. It makes the countries feel like they're starting from scratch every time.
In the previous games, some countries already had higher-level knights or evolved monsters. That made it feel like these countries had already been fighting and developing for a long time.
Here, everything feels much more empty and generic.
Art
Compared to the older games, the art direction feels more like generic anime slop to me.
The older game had its own visual identity and charm. The newer one feels much more generic by comparison.
The 3D animations also feel stiffer than I expected. There are some improvements, though. The evolved 3D monsters actually look significantly different from their previous forms, which is pretty nice. That's definitely better than the older system where evolved monsters were often just recolors.
Overall
The biggest problem is that it doesn't really feel like the Brigandine I remember.

The older game had its own visual identity and charm. The newer one feels much more generic by comparison.
The 3D animations also feel stiffer than I expected. There are some improvements, though. The evolved 3D monsters actually look significantly different from their previous forms, which is pretty nice. That's definitely better than the older system where evolved monsters were often just recolors.
Overall
The biggest problem is that it doesn't really feel like the Brigandine I remember.
It feels like the developers tried to reinvent the wheel, but a lot of those new ideas ended up feeling half-baked.
Even having 16 countries doesn't necessarily make the strategy or experience deeper. Since each country basically only has one territory, the whole invasion/defense aspect loses a lot of its impact.
Maybe I'm being too harsh because I had pretty high expectations after playing the previous games, but after waiting so long and getting hyped for this, it's honestly just a huge disappointment.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI played 30ish hours, finished 1 story and reached 1/3 of another one, the game is not bad, but it feels like a cheap spinoff for a multiple reasons compared to its predecessors.
PROS:
-It looks like each story has his own final boss and the nodes that unlock at specific times change based on the story.
-Each hero/knight has a unique skill or passive or both, which is nice.
-Gameplay wise is not bad, i had a lot of fun.
CONS:
-Less monster evolutions, the only monster where you can choose the evolution is the dragon (but it only has 3 evolutions compared to 5 from the Runersia ones), everything else is linear.
-Each story is REALLY short with no end/post game, i don't mean that the campaign itself is short, it still took me around 12-15 hours to finish one story, but the story itself is almost non existent, all story dialogues and cutscenes for a single campaign are around 15min total from the first cutscene to the end credits.
Compared to Runersia, that game was half trpg and half visual novel, easily reaching 10hs of dialogues and cutscenes on each campaign.
-Smaller and less intresting starting roster, this is because each faction starts on a single node, so when you get a faction with a "lot" of heroes/knights you have 3 max, so way less banter and conversation between each other compared to Runersia.
-No banter before combat and on defeating an hero, there is no interaction what so ever unless is an event fight, Runersia had hundreds if not thousands of small interactions between them, like not wanting to fight or wondering why that "famous knight" was on the battlefield and so on, if you played it you know.
-No really "unique" heroes/knights, everyone has a distinct trait or skill true, but there is no real unique character.
There is an hero variant for a lot of monsters, but they're just a monster disguised as an hero, same skills and same evolution path, for sure there is no Tobi or Umimaru.
-No reward what so ever for finishing a story, no extra mode, options or difficulty.
-Really ugly cutscenes, don't get me wrong, i like anime and mangas, but idk what style did they use... it just looks so ugly, the characters are drawed like the 1990s anime where they really looked 2d with a different coloration from the backgrounds of the time, but the backgrounds here are modern, which in my eyes makes an horrible contrast...
NEUTRAL (depends on the player):
-Event based campaign, you can conquer all you can or do absolutely nothing and wait for the vent fights, once you do all the event fights the campaign is over, end credits.
-Less strategic map, just conquer everything on your path, your biggest strategic decision is going to be which teams goes left and which one goes right on a node split, after 2 turns they're back together.
-Linear hero progression, there is no multiclassing or class change what so ever.
-Less teams, since the map is made as it is, and the final battle let's you chose only 3 people and forces you to take at least 2 specific protagonists from that story, you have less incentive in building multiple teams, it's better to just power creep 2-3 of them and the starters themselves are a must since you are forced to use them.
-Different take on the gameplay, with no rune area restriction and the rally system.
There is so much missing from the previous game, not only on the gameplay and strategy aspect, but on the stories too.
It feels like a simple spinoff to test some changes in mechanics and make it centered only on fighting, forgetting completely about everything else: plain stories, no banter with enemies, no interaction with your own team, no truly unique heroes, really straight forward and small map making it lack strategic depth and making the game shorter so less planning in general, no multiple monster evolutions, no multiclassing.
So is the game bad? No.
Is it plain? Yes.

One of my biggest problems is the class system. It feels way too linear and restrictive, with very little room to experiment or create interesting builds. Runersia already had a fairly straightforward class progression, but this somehow feels even more limited. Instead of expanding on the system and giving us more meaningful choices, different class paths, or interesting combinations, it feels like the freedom has been reduced even further.
That's especially disappointing because experimenting with knights, monsters, classes, and team compositions was a huge part of what made forsena fun (also i noticed the rune range is gone)
The PC controls feel janky and awkward, like the interface wasn't properly designed around mouse and keyboard. Basic navigation and unit management should feel smooth in a strategy game, but too often I'm fighting the controls instead of thinking about the battle (for example wasd should move the whole map not the cursor geez...)
What annoy me most is that Runersia already provided a good foundation (kinda). They didn't need to reinvent everything they needed to understand what worked, expand the class system, add more depth and variety, and improve the overall experience. instead of idk this per city(Castle) thingy with 2 or 3 character at start and mercs ugh.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tWhen I first saw that not only was a new Brigandine, one of my favorite franchises, being made with tons of factions and seemingly fleshed out character backstories and such but it was also being published by my favorite publisher I was ecstatic. This was to me what GTA6 is to others, I was seriously hyped. Then I bought the game the day it came out and booted it up and... Saw all the things they removed. And the promises of fleshed out stories flopped. I won't go into detail, there are 200 other reviews that already say what I'd say about the things removed.
I actually did enjoy the Rally mechanic and when I first saw the AI use it as well I was excited to see what they'd do... Until I saw a Ninja hit one of my front liners and walk directly into my formation where every one of my spell casters could hit them. And then I saw an AI cleric knight walk up and attack my dragon, doing 20 damage and taking 200 back. This is even worse when I realized that all the enemy monsters and knights resurrect and level up automatically every turn. They don't even get any exp during battle. Which means it's even more important to kill every monster per battle so you can outpace their auto leveling (Assuming you're like me and are trying to conquer the world and not just turtling which is apparently viable).
The positive changes for me were as follows. The aforementioned Rally mechanic, because it adds more things the player can do and gives a caster monster that ran out of MP something to do. The "unique" leaders getting unique traits (Not unique enough imo, most are forgettable minus a couple that are game warping but it's a step in the right direction.) \n\n\t\t\t\tI actually did enjoy the Rally mechanic and when I first saw the AI use it as well I was excited to see what they'd do... Until I saw a Ninja hit one of my front liners and walk directly into my formation where every one of my spell casters could hit them. And then I saw an AI cleric knight walk up and attack my dragon, doing 20 damage and taking 200 back. This is even worse when I realized that all the enemy monsters and knights resurrect and level up automatically every turn. They don't even get any exp during battle. Which means it's even more important to kill every monster per battle so you can outpace their auto leveling (Assuming you're like me and are trying to conquer the world and not just turtling which is apparently viable).
The positive changes for me were as follows. The aforementioned Rally mechanic, because it adds more things the player can do and gives a caster monster that ran out of MP something to do. Generic sprites for almost all leader units. Being able to lose units when retreating, or capture enemy units, is a core Brigandine feature that is missing.
Giving the story mode enemies automatic XP and seemingly limitless resurrections every round is unsatisfying. Go for an overreach attack to take out a strong leader? They're back the next round! Fight tooth and nail to the last hit and eliminate every single enemy unit and leader? Doesn't matter! Facing enemies that respawn and level up automatically every round is really dull progression. It's like my actions don't matter.

So, I'm just going to highlight somethings I think are fairly big negatives about this one for any prospective buyers, and the few positive things I saw.
First off most of the rune knights are now just generics. Some of the unique lords for the non-MC factions are really just recolors at best with one extra ability, and sometimes they're just a reskinned monster like in the class of the lizard rune knight unit. These extra lords don't really have much of anything unique about them.
Second we lost the ability to reclass or do anything meaningfully unique from the previous game, and we're stuck with most every start boiling down to level 1 lord, and some generics without much of anything special, and relatively tiny monster rosters. Most starts after the initial part of the game won't feel particularly engaging or unique since it just boils down to most ultimately playing the same.
Third most of the art looks incredibly generic compared to previous games in the series, and that's honestly tragic as I'd say the last few were actually quite good looking games. The unit models are fine, but most everything else looks worse here.
Fourth from what little I've played most of the story seems fairly cliche anime tropes, and the lack of actually more widespread character roster seems to negatively impact that. Subject to changing my opinion on this as I play more, but not very impressed so far.

This game feels like a poor clone of a clone. Brigandine Runersia was an admirable version and I would recommend it. This I can't recommend unless the developers go back and rework many features. This game feels half-finished. I got 20 hours in to give it a fair chance and I just couldn't continue.
Watching the enemies scale every month as a way to make the combats challenging seems lazy and contrived. That and they get upgrades to Tier 3 without having to put any effort in is just another slap in the face. If I see some updates I may come back, but if not this will leave a bad taste on what was previously a great franchise.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Well, in other games, as well as the OG, the map is actually pretty big. And the deeper you move into enemies' territory, the stronger their units become. And when you conquer certain city or when you get big enough, story events will be triggered, and so on to the end game. You can strategically choose when to move on with the story (when you're ready of course).
Not in this game, however. Here, you have a determined number of turns until the "story event battle" is triggered. You have to expand and become strong quick or you will get ♥♥♥♥♥♥. And it's not fun to play under restricted time. I wanted to explore more but the timer locked on to my ass, ready to ruin the campaign.
There are no ally/enemy concept either, you will have to kill all of them.
The war map is small too. Like, a fraction of what the OG game was. And comparing to other same games, you can see the effort is hugely lacking.
The AI is really bad, too, even worse than what it was 28 years ago. Can you believe that? 2026 and we have worse AI than a 3 decades old game. It's so dumb that it makes you question how much of a budget was this game on. And you will wonder that A LOT of times while playing. Without the cheats the AI has, it will stand no chance against a human player, and even with a bunch of cheats, it's passable difficulty.

Art is the only saving grace of this game. Godbless the artist. And it's the reason why I was tricked into buying this game day 1. I can't get enough of Garnet's thighs. Then I discovered the holy sister's thighs.
The character designs feel like the good old days, in the 90s until 201x. Unlike the chinese gacha game slop with overly designed characters that look like a peacock in a dress glued with confetti, the design style here is simple, yet memorable and stylish.
However, there are too few CGs in this game to show off the artist's prowess. When you read Visual Novel with SRPG element, not only you get the same but better gameplay than this game, you also get to enjoy a buckload of well-drawn artwork to make you get hooked on the charming characters. Here, the number of CGs is barely there. The artist designed good characters, and you didn't order more artwork from them to showcase? In a game where such thing is important? Just how tight is the budget?
In the original game, you get to enjoy short anime cut-scenes, hand-drawn, impressive ♥♥♥♥. Here, you get to enjoy... 2D animated cut-scenes (Using Live2D or similar software) that look like they were created by my 2y/o nephew, delivered to you by an outsourced Korean studio.
These cut-scenes were sooooooooooooooo ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hideous. From the art to the animation. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bro. If you're so tight on budget, just ask the artist to draw some actual event CGs and do a scene with it. No need to make an animation sequence. You Japanese people are good with it, Visual Novel exists in your culture.
I want to love the story, okay? But these cut-scenes didn't allow me to. Imagine my pair of eyes is a loving wife in a newly-wedded relationship. She wants to love the husband (the story) but the neighbor (cut-scenes) waits for the husband to leave the house and ♥♥♥♥♥ her senseless, on the balcony, in the bathroom, in the shared-bed, my eyes' womb was pumped full of the white stuff. My god, it were attacked, violently. I had to look away while listening to the voice line to know what was going on.

Well, the overall plot is not that bad. A ambitious subordinate of the king went rouge and took over the country because he wanted glory and didn't like how soft and peace-loving the king was. A plain and simple evil force without melo drama ♥♥♥♥.
But, the story didn't pan out great, well, because there is barely any reading at all. 40 hours of gameplay and the story length was like... 20 minutes? Or less. I have read one chapter of a Japanese web novel written in a couple of days by Japanese amateur writers that's longer and more exciting than the entire Garnet campaign's story. It was so short, and lacking in content. Like, it exists yet doesn't at the same time. It feels like one of those mangas where the start was great, but the company decided to axe it and cut off 50% of the content, telling the writer to just finish the damn thing and move on.
The characters are not explored in any ways at all. Stuff were left unanswered. You only have one thought through-out the gameplay "What's the hell going on?" and one thought at the end "What the ♥♥♥♥? That's it? It's over?"

I don't write this review to recommend the game to the general public. I write this because I don't think this game is treated fairly by "veterans" in the reviews. I played Brigandine before, I played plenty of other TRPGs / SRPGs. I'm having a lot of fun with this. This is not a bad game, it is a misunderstood game.
The general consensus rn seems to be that this game is an overall downgrade compared to the previous title, Runersia. I don't think this is true. Let's get into some common complaints:
1) Season limit in campaigns. This is a non-issue in practice. Every few seasons world story events progress, until a finale is reached. What this mostly means is that you cannot conquer most of the world and then sit around and spam seasons for questing to watch numbers go up and become more OP than you would ever need to be. The campaigns are still plenty long. And not being allowed to conquer certain areas until story events allow you to does limit freedom of play, but it is for the sake of telling a somewhat coherent campaign story. And again, the story eventually expecting you to finish the game is a non-issue. People wouldn't blame Fire Emblem for making the player actually finish a campaign instead of grinding endlessly.
2) Generic leaders. This game has a good amount of unique leaders (~72, a bit less than Runersia, but still a lot), and they actually have unique active and passive abilities (some are more interesting than others. but still, I don't remember Runersia featuring unique character abilities). The "problem" is that the unique characters are all tied to the 24 subfactions, 3 unique leaders per subfaction, and you start as one subfaction and then slowly conquer the others. You start with 3 unique leaders, which is less than Runersia. But you have a steady "income" of unique leaders from conquered subfactions; commonly you will have 6 unique leaders after your very first conquered map node. Meanwhile, questing became more important. Every node on the map can now be upgraded to provide unique benefits to your empire. And to get materials, you need to do lots of quests. And you need lots of leaders to go on those quests. Generic leaders are simply hired labour for the increased demand in questing. As long as you got the money, hire more generic leaders for menial labour, while sending your favourite unique leaders on invasions. Need to ferry units around the map? Leave it to a generic leader. They are simply workhorses, and a huge QoL feature. No longer do you have to waste your main forces on questing. This speeds up the invasion process and thus suits the season limit mentioned above.
3) Reduced unit/class variety. Yes, some units/classes are gone without an equivalent replacement, and some branching paths are gone, or were merged. But honestly, this is overestimated. Not much was lost compared to Runersia, while new monster lines and monster leaders were added. And I won't cry over elemental spam being gone. In my opinion this game has done a good job rebalancing the units and making the experience feel fresh.
The new "rally" feature is really nice and adds another layer of value to units. Certain leader classes can get a lot out of rallying certain monster types. And it's a fun tool for repositioning as well. The gameplay is more dynamic. The game also features a much more free and dynamic resource management during the organization phases. You have various money sinks to reap various benefits, and you gotta make some choices. I also think that overall QoL increased, and that the game became more streamlined while also increasing in depth a little.
There's also lots of comments about the new artstyle compared to Runersia's "more unique" style. Personally, it grew on me. Perhaps there's just a lot of anime haters in the SRPG playerbase, who knows. I also think the voice acting is fun, and the soundtrack is a step up overall.
I repeat that this is a niche game for a niche audience, and whether or not this is worth the hefty price tag is for you to decide. If you're familiar with Brigandine, I implore you to look at the changes a little harder and see their purpose. If you're familiar with the genre but new to Brigandine, perhaps wait for a sale, I cannot promise that this is the game for you. But I'm having a great time with it!

I played a lot more since my original review. I am enjoying this game more and more.
I think a problem people may have with the game is that the barrier of entry is a bit higher. From the start you are expected to engage with a number of economic decisions that simply were not present in Runersia. But once it clicks, it's like puzzle pieces falling into place and the money x item x XP economy feels more streamlined than ever.
One key concept here is "investment". Do not sit on a pile of gold. Invest in mercenaries. If by the time the first event battle shows up you have not capped out at 50/50 mercenaries, you are doing something wrong. Mercenary questing is how you scale. For any new map node you conquer, prioritise buying a couple mercenaries to send on supply quests so you can upgrade your castles.
As a very nice bonus, questing has a chance to recruit random unaffiliated unique leaders every season, and some of these are really nice.
Also keep in mind that almost any item quest reward will henceforth be available in the shop after you found it just once. This includes the level 20 unit upgrade items you can get from level 2 castle treasure quests. Plan accordingly.
The pacing of this game is certainly more aggressive. You are effectively punished for having units idly on standby for defense, as those units will not level but the enemy units on standby will. The workaround for this is playing as aggressively as you can. But taking losses will slow you down and push you back on the XP curve. I feel like mercenary questing is supposed to be the solution for this as well. Constantly train up excess units, unlock higher tier gear to give yourself an edge even with underlevelled units, unlock ways to promote units early. It's a decently challenging game and you gotta take every advantage you can get. That being said, it's absolutely possible to conquer the entire land before even the second event battle (except for those still event-gated map nodes).

I think a problem people may have with the game is that the barrier of entry is a bit higher. From the start you are expected to engage with a number of economic decisions that simply were not present in Runersia. But once it clicks, it's like puzzle pieces falling into place and the money x item x XP economy feels more streamlined than ever.
One key concept here is "investment". Do not sit on a pile of gold. Invest in mercenaries. If by the time the first event battle shows up you have not capped out at 50/50 mercenaries, you are doing something wrong. Mercenary questing is how you scale. For any new map node you conquer, prioritise buying a couple mercenaries to send on supply quests so you can upgrade your castles.
As a very nice bonus, questing has a chance to recruit random unaffiliated unique leaders every season, and some of these are really nice.
Also keep in mind that almost any item quest reward will henceforth be available in the shop after you found it just once. This includes the level 20 unit upgrade items you can get from level 2 castle treasure quests. Plan accordingly.
The pacing of this game is certainly more aggressive. You are effectively punished for having units idly on standby for defense, as those units will not level but the enemy units on standby will. The workaround for this is playing as aggressively as you can. But taking losses will slow you down and push you back on the XP curve. I feel like mercenary questing is supposed to be the solution for this as well. Constantly train up excess units, unlock higher tier gear to give yourself an edge even with underlevelled units, unlock ways to promote units early. It's a decently challenging game and you gotta take every advantage you can get. That being said, it's absolutely possible to conquer the entire land before even the second event battle (except for those still event-gated map nodes).

First off, the game feels incredibly clunky when using mouse and keyboard. The mechanics feel like they actually regressed compared to the previous game instead of improving. One of the biggest frustrations for me is how restricted the map progression feels. You can't even attack a base that's right next to you unless the game has unlocked the specific path or quest that allows you to invade it. It makes the whole experience feel unnecessarily restrictive.
I gave the game plenty of time because I was hoping it would eventually get better, but after four hours, I was honestly just more disappointed than when I started.
What makes it worse is that I bought the game at full price, and now I've played long enough that I can't even get a refund through Steam.

Like many other day-of-launch purchasers, I am a Brigandine veteran. My favorite is- and it looks like will remain- Brigandine: Grand Edition, the JP only 'enhanced' release of the original game, The Legend of Forsena. I first played Forsena when I was 4 years old (!), so to say that it's been a lifelong series for me would be an understatement. I've played many, MANY, MANY! hours of the original Brigandine in both its versions, and I've played a fair bit of Runersia both on PS4 and Steam. Runersia is a very good game; I just haven't played a TON of it because... it very much did NOT reinvent the wheel. Which is fine! I just felt like I never needed to play much of it, even though I'd say it's very good.
Brigandine: Abyss tries to reinvent the wheel over and over again. Story mode does indeed have hard time limits AND story-based invasion locks, though I don't know if Mission mode does yet- I haven't dipped my toe in there. And indeed, you start with a single territory with three unique units and some generics. Overall, I don't completely mind the idea of starting with the single territory and only three unique units- I like the idea, even, that you start small and recruit more uniques through conquest. Idea-wise, I can dig it. In practice... there are some issues. Namely that one territory means you have a TINY pool of possible monster summons starting out, and it won't get much bigger very soon. The second problem is the balance- there are some kingdoms that start with... honestly not great monsters, whereas their neighbors might be much more well off. Not only that, but the hard time limit in Story mode sees the enemy level ratcheting up at a rate you basically can't hope to match with more than one single squad of three knights. This would be workable if the enemy's MONSTER level didn't also go up at the same rate; a feat your monsters won't likely match. The enemies level in a way that implies they are all getting kills evenly, constantly. Even the healers. Even the supports. Forsena often had you fighting knights of various- sometimes far higher than you- levels, and it was fine. Why? Because outside the few high-level starting monsters that EVERY nation gets, everyone starts at level one with their fresh monsters. And if those monsters aren't fighting, they're not leveling. It was a realistic way of handling the simulation. Abyss, however, is EXTREMELY unbalanced in this regard. I hope you're cool with your level 7 Knights and their level 3-5 monsters going up against a field of straight level 9s. The balance as-is in the game currently is BAD. Maybe cool if you're a masochist, I guess?
So, I've turned off my brain and started again, down on Easy. Sure, it's not really CHALLENGING, but I am actually having fun. It is at least scratching that 'large roster of numbers going up' itch, even if there is virtually zero build variety. No changing classes for knights; most monsters have a straight-line upgrade path. While this is simplified from the previous games... it doesn't bother me much. Because really... unless you were incessantly grinding TO interact with class switching, how much were you using it, really? It's not a big loss for me.
The new battlefields are beautiful and I think playing with map geometry with congestion points and dead ends and things is actually quite interesting, in comparison to the previous games' general openness with a few narrow bridges on a map here or there now and then. I also don't mind the map elevation mechanic that was added. It seems to work fine and, much like the more intricately designed maps, force you into rethinking strategies or coming up with something on the fly that works very well. I dig that. That's not a bad idea. Unlike some, I also like the character art. The monster art is meh, but I thought that about the two previous games, too (unless you played original release Forsena, which had none at all!) Both Forsena and Runersia were far more unique in their character art style, whereas this game is much more 'default anime' looking with a bit of a sketched, non-smooth lines feel, but I like the designs themselves, broadly. Like in all things, though, the character art in Forsena remains my preference.
The base upgrading is, again, a cool idea that seems not well balanced. Considering the level the CPU's characters will be rocketing to very, very soon, quests in general seem like a bad idea outside of using knights that will never see battle, ever. The 'one territory per faction' nature also means you will likely never get in a situation where a single enemy knight retreats. They have nowhere to go. The days of getting lucky- and playing smart- with an under leveled team and managing to defend your territory because you sniped the enemy's biggest, baddest knight are over. I will miss that. The only person to ever likely be retreating at any point in this game is... probably you.
Abyss is a game of a lot of new ideas that will turn off people just wanting 'Brigandine: Again. Yes, Again'. But I actually LIKE most of the ideas in theory, outside of the time limit lock and invasion locks. The game is, however, dragged down by VERY poor balancing.
